The UEFA Fantasy Champions League kicks off this evening and, if you’ve keeping up, you will have noticed that we’ve already published a comprehensive guide to the game that should hopefully be of some help to those Fantasy managers looking for some pointers ahead of the big kick-off.

Those signing up can also join the Scout League (code: 212-74) and then sit back and soak up our first “European Watchlist” ahead of Matchday One.

The following batch of players are our ‘Ones to Watch’ in the next two days of Champions League action…

Yann Sommer of FC Basel is the perfect candidate to kick off our European adventure – a cheap goalkeeper with a good fixture (at home to Romanian champions Oțelul Galați). If you’ve a bigger budget then investing in Petr Cech or Julio Cesar (if Inter can get over their 4-3 thumping by Palermo) wouldn’t go amiss.

Dani Alves is a defender by name but certainly not by nature. Barcelona fielded just one single defender in a tie last month and there’s no reason to expect Pep Guardiola to give the Brazilian anything other than a license to attack Milan this evening.

Ligue 1 offers some reasonable value defenders as Souleymane Diawara travels with Marseilles to Greece to face Olympiakos with the hope of keeping some sheets clean while Mathieu Debuchy will be looking to continue some of his recent goalscoring form for champions Lille.

New Inter Milan manager Gian Gasperini is intent on bringing his 3-4-3 formation to the Nerazzurri. This has opened up the option for some of Inter’s full backs to play “Out of Position” on the flank of the midfield – Yuto Nagatomo (an absolute snip as a 5.0 defender) should do that on Wednesday and become a solid option for it. Unless the rumours circling around Italy this morning are true.

If your knowledge extends to Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, choosing from the tie Plzeň and BATE Borisov could also reap reward – our Jonathan Wilson level knowledge of Eastern European football isn’t there. Yet.

Dortmund’s home tie versus Arsenal will give the hottest young property in Germany a chance to show Arsene Wenger just how good he is in the flesh. This is one match-up we’re very much looking forward to seeing and Mario Götze is a big reason behind our excitement.

Another midfielder reportedly on Arsene Wenger’s late window shopping radar was Eden Hazard. Opponents CSKA are in bad shape and bad form right now and Hazard should cause them all sorts of problems – especially coming off his second half, two-goal performance in St. Etienne this weekend.

Lyon have played seven games in all competitions already this season and, as of yet, have been unable to chalk up a clean sheet. News like this augurs well for an Ajax side that will be welcoming Remi Garde’s outfit to the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday night. Christian Eriksen is likely to be the key figure behind any such goals and at just 6.0 in price is more than worthy of a healthy amount of backing.

As Andre-Villas Boas’ main signing of the summer, there might be a lot of weight of expectation upon Juan Mata to bring verve to the Chelsea attack. Priced kindly at 8.5 and with a home game against Bayer Leverkusen we imagine he might just use the Champions League stage to woo the Stamford Bridge faithful.

Cypriot champions APOEL are back in the Champions League after just a year away. It’s not them we’re looking at, though; opponents Zenit will be visiting the shorelines of Cyprus tonight and both Danny (midfield) and Aleksandr Kerzhakov (forward) should have a big part to play in any result.

With the ‘higher ups’ missing the fact that Diego Forlan is cup tied, the Inter frontline should choose itself and we’re opting for Diego Milito. With a mellow 8.5 price-tag and back under the stewardship of an old manager (his most prolific season came under Gasperini at Genoa a couple of years back) goals should on the horizon.

With Igor Akinfeev missing through injury the CSKA defence looks more like a lace curtain than one made of iron. Last season’s Ligue 1 winner and top scorer Moussa Sow will be looking to put his name out on the European stage by making the most of this opportunity.

Those scraping the barrel of the budget options could do a lot worse than visiting FC Basel once again for Swiss veteran Alexander Frei who’ll be facing the previously mentioned Romanian champions.

La Liga also has a couple of options that might shine this week. 7.5 for Roberto Soldado visiting FC Genk looks like another value striking option – he’s scored four goals in his two La Liga games already- and that Lionel Messi chap is reported to be pretty good at this football lark too.

Those are the players we’ll be keeping a close eye over the next two evenings. Don’t forget to join the Scout League and remember deadline for entry is 7:30pm (GMT) tonight – Fantasy Managers will likely have eight team sheets at their disposal to help team selection if it takes their fancy, too.

We’ll be back tomorrow morning with our notes from all eight of those fixtures. Here’s hoping for some big talking points.

maybe Cabaye>Jarvis? Or can you not afford that?

Brunt may still start next week, if he does then he'll start consistently and probably score well over the next few weeks. I say give him one more chance.

Cabaye however was playing pretty deep last night, didn't really look that involved so I'd look to ship him out.

I don't see the point in captaining differentials at this stage. Just having RVP/Bent/Baines in your team is enough. Few other people have them so if they do well then it's all good. But just captain Rooney (as majority of others will) and minimise the damage in case he gets another hatrick. If he fails then you don't lose out as much, and you should still make some ground back with your other picks. There's no need to catch that 50 point lead in one gameweek.

        +1 very well said sir.

Unfortunately the best thing to do at the moment is to captain Rooney and hope your other players perform well also. I'd say near enough a million people will have Rooney(c) at the moment, so if you do the same and get points elsewhere you can catch up!

Ah, that's slightly trickier then. You kind of have to stick to your gameplan. I would just leave the captaincy on RVP and hope that things settle down a bit over the next 4/5 weeks.

    "Hi AP

    Thanks for your email.

Firstly, we'd just like to say you are a hero to the fpl community, thanks for getting in touch. Secondly, In this case the ball was in control in the goalkeepers hands and also touch another Swansea player before Arshavin scored. Therefore no assist is allocated to an Arsenal player.

    Regards,

It's not an assist as Walcott's shot deflected off one of the Swansea defenders (outside the box) before Vorm picked it up.

Buuuuuut, it says nothing about a keeper in the rules, and Vorm rolled it against Rangel ("also touch another Swansea player before Arshavin scored") who was in da ma' f*cking box.

If they said no because of the first deflection, fair enough. But what they've said there doesn't stop it being an assist under these rules.

Yup. They've shot themselves in the foot by trying to make the assist rule 'clear'. If they'd just kept it as 'our decision is final, bugger off' then no one would have dreamed of asking for Walcott to be given an assist.

The ball being 'under the keepers control' is irrelevant, since Rooney's assist was under the control of the Arsenal defender that weakly headed the ball clear. The Arsenal player may not have had control of the ball for very long, but it was under his control as he was intentionally heading it.

You could argue that the weak header from the Arsenal player implies that he didn't have the ball under control, (but really he did and it was just a mistake from him), but then you can also say that Vorm didn't really have that ball under control considering he allowed it to stupidly come out of his hands craply, ping off Rangel's heels and land at Arshavin's feet...

See my username for my opinion on Jones. He's still not guaranteed a start though because Smalling is also excellent. Now Rio is back too there are too many defenders for too many places. Nani and Young should start most games until Valencia plays himself back into the team, then... more rotation.

OK thanks. I want to bring in one defender and midfielder. I think Young will keep Nani off the left side if Valencia plays, and only based on the weekend Jones took priority over Smalling. I know SAF will probably switch it up, but would you agree Jones and Young safest/best option?

Fergie tries to get to the magical 10 points asap in the CL (so he can fully rotate for the last 2 games), so I doubt he'll be rested at this stage, especially against best other team in the group.

He said recently that he won't be putting the younger players in for this away trip to Benfica, but that they'll get a chance in the easier home games - I realise Owen and Berba aren't young players, but I still think Rooney will almost definitely start.

Why risk Rooney when there are far easier CL games on the horizon that we should easily win? It's not like Berba Park and Valencia is weak either, quality experienced players. Imagine going into sundays game against Chelsea with Rooney injured... disaster.

I just think if Fergie had to pick one game for Rooney to play in our group, it would be Benfica away. See your point about Chelsea on Sunday, but I'd say that Rooney was much more likely to get injured against Bolton, and he played the full 90 (even though we had it sewn up by half-time.)

Rotation tends to be to give players a rest rather than to avoid injury, and I don't think Rooney needs a rest.

            The Express take on it:

"Cleverley’s ankle injury at Bolton on Saturday has given Michael Carrick the chance to re-establish himself as one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-choice midfielders starting against Benfica in Lisbon tomorrow. Ferguson is also set to give first starts to Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs, Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia"

There's always little mickey Owen too. Berba is alright if there are people doing his running for him, which Park and Tony V would do. Rooney to come on if we're losing (which we shouldn't be).

Asked this yesterday but nobody seemed to reply or want to comment.

Just wondered what people's thought are on delap for stoke, been out of action for first couple of games, but played a solid 70 minutes last game that beat liverpool, thinking of transferring him in straight swap for mikel.

anyone's thoughts on him? got a hell of a throw for maybe some assists? worth the punt?

any thought welcome & appreciated 🙂

I'd say no. It is an interesting possibility, especially at 5mil, but given that he's only had 1 assist each in the previous two seasons the throw-ins don't really pay off like you think they would. I'd take at least N. Dyer, Obertan, Muamba, Faurlin, Moses, and probably a few others before I would even consider taking Delap.

I think he's a nailed on starter when fully fit, which isn't helpful when he's never really fully fit for very long. Get rid IMO, too much of a risk that he's going to start. Like a cheap Rio Ferdinand.

I got a response from FPL about the Walcott assist:

    Hi,

    Thanks for your email.

In this case the ball was in control in the goalkeepers hands and also touch another Swansea player before Arshavin scored. Therefore no assist is allocated to an Arsenal player.

Here's a different take on it. I was top 500 last year, won my 20 team minileague easily but, to be honest, the last few months were a bit boring because I was so far ahead. This year, different story...I am about 1.7 millionth overall and 2nd from bottom of my league - about 100 points behind the leader thanks to Rooney / Aguero captaining!! But, I am looking forward to the challenge of trying to reel him (and all the other teams) in to try and retain my title. I reckon I can as well.

      Look at it that way.

Hey guys, just wildcarded for this week after a poor run... thoughts on this provisional lineup?

    Begovic (Friedel)

    Richards R.Taylor Woodgate Berra (Warnock)

    Anderson Walcott(v) Silva (Petrov(AVL) Moses)

    Adebayor Rooney(c) Dzeko

I've not seen the Begovic/Friedel rotation anywhere but the fixtures rotate really well until January, as long as Spurs can hold their defence against the minnows. Is this too risky/not worth the extra cash for Friedel at 5.5? I'm hoping it'll prove to be a decent differential.

There's no Liverpool cover but I'm not too bothered with Spurs, Wolves, Everton and Man U coming up. Error?

Oh, and Cabaye/Brunt/Hunt better than Petrov? Obertan even to make room for a defensive upgrade somewhere?

    Cheers chaps.

Cheers, I'm thinking Petrov has to go, Jarvis is going to come in for him but I'm not sure about SWP yet, he looked keen but you reckon he'll make bigger returns than a cheap and favoured Man U midfielder? Young's getting all the glory at the moment but for 6.2 I'm not sure I can see past Anderson as a cheap way in to a red-hot side. Not that I couldn't be convinced otherwise...

Maybe Long for Adebayor for a month 'til Spurs' fixtures really clear up as a way to get in on West Brom's decent games and free up some cash?

Really gets you thinking, this fantasy football lark... I'll be dreaming about my squad at this rate.

And yeah I think Cabaye is overhyped too, don't really get it but there's always the worrying feeling that everyone knows something you don't!

Petrov's Bolton is coming in after Arsenal and Chelsea... but with Arsenal's form I might just bang him in now and save a transfer. He's been gold on my Sun fantasy football and nobody else in my league has him so I'm a big fan at the moment 🙂

not sure how ^ was made, but I reckon that begovic/Hennessey should work well too if you want a cheaper option.

I like your defence, but obviously you have possibly losing his place Raylor and injury prone Woodgate.

Personally i wouldnt pick Anderson, cause with its likely you will have to play him every week, and with Rooney thats a lot of weight on the very capable Man U shoulders.

Petrov is a good option, but Moses AND? Petrov is giving you week subs. I would prefer to get rid of Moses tbh. Though possibly Moses to Dyer and then upgrade to Anderson to SWP etc.

I'm thinking either Woodgate > Shawcross or Raylor > Saylor and gambling on the other. Team's looking more solid already though.

        Thanks for that link too,

I'll have a rethink about Anderson since nobody's keen, would be nice to have Jarvis but I'm not enough of a gambler for SWP at his price! But right now it's off home (cheers for getting me through the last hour of work guys) and to the pub for the Champions League... let's not get started on the UCL fantasy squad headache.

Is Yaya to Petrov a good transfer? or is it better to get Jarvis?

    Have a front 8 of
    Silva, Yaya, Dyer, Moses, Brunt
    Suarez, Rooney, RVP

    at the moment.

Get Victor Ruiz from Valencia. He's 4.0. They just signed him and he played at the weekend, keeping a clean sheet against Atletico.

I know it's tough, but he has a good fixture this week. I'm p*ssed off with him too, but give him one more chance.

Sess is a flop. Walters is quality and he's down as a midfielder while playing as a striker. Although with Crouchie and Jerome arriving he might be pushed back a bit.

B then, simpson and Brown rotate wonderfully, As do Boyata and Kompany interestingly. Although essentially Kompany will be first choice I presume.

No one worth it rotates with Baines, but as hes 8.0M I doubt that matters
