Our Watchlist rankings, offering a view on mid-term Fantasy picks, have been updated for the forthcoming run of fixtures. You can now view these by each position using the tabbed tables in the sidebar on your homepage.

Read on for our summary of the significant moves in our rankings – complete with discussion on the some of the major prospects on offer.

Ben Foster’s clean sheet at Norwich, coupled with a run of fixtures that sets him up nicely for further returns in the coming weeks, has him climb to the top of our goalkeeper rankings. In truth, there’s little between the top keeper choices available right now, with Joe Hart and Wojech Szczesny available as strong options with those with cash to invest, while Asmir Bergovic, Tim Krul and Shay Given all offer low-to-mid price bracket.

Vincent Kompany’s imperious form and City’s forthcoming home matches has him at the top of our defender rankings, ousting Chelsea’s Jose Boswinga. Kompany looks to offer the greater security within Roberto Mancini’s back line and continues to attract Fantasy Premier League bonus to supplement his returns.

Stoke’s resolute defensive performances have brought three clean sheets in four and, with strong fixtures to come, Robert Huth enjoys a big climb in our rankings. There are cheaper options in the Potters’ back four – notably Ryan Shawcross, although there’s uncertainty surrounding Matt Upson and Jonathan Woodgate who could be set to rotate in the coming weeks. Huth looks a more certain starter and, as last season demonstrated, he brings a significant goal threat which, to this point, has yet to materialise but will surely return as a factor soon.

Everton’s Leighton Baines has a strong fixture in the forthcoming Gameweek but will be stretched in fixtures to follow – his Fantasy owners will likely need to rely on attacking returns to justify his weighty price tag. It’s a drop for Baines, then, with mid-price offerings Steve Taylor, Roger Johnson (with Stephen Ward a strong alternative) nipping above the Everton man with decent fixtures to come. West Brom’s Jonas Olsson and Villa’s Alan Hutton offer value further down our rankings.

David Silva’s sparkling form at the point of City’s midfield keeps him out in front in our midfield rankings. Arseanal’s Theo Walcott is some way behind in second, boosted by strong fixtures which really should bring returns in the coming weeks. Chelsea’s Juan Mata is hovering with intent, however – a trip to Old Trafford this weekend reduces his short-term potential but, following this, we’d expect to see the Spaniard threaten his compatriot at the top of our Watchlist.

The Nani vs Ashley Young debate continues – Young took the early rounds but Nani’s consistency has been strong and, despite not yet offering an explosive return, we’re still backing him to deliver despite impending competition from a fit again Antonio Valencia. This remains an interesting scenario and one that needs monitoring.

Rafael Van der Vaart represents another poser – he’s declared himself fit for the visit of Liverpool to the Lane this weekend but, having seen his side dispose of Wolves at Molineux, Harry Redknnapp may not find room for the Dutchman and break up the Emmanuel Adebayor/Jermain Defoe partnership. Fantasy managers are forced to “wait and see” when it comes to Van der Vaart’s fitness and role – his ability to deliver Fantasy returns is undoubted though, keeping him in our thoughts over the coming weeks.

There is perhaps greater security on offer elsewhere. Everton’s Tim Cahill looks set for another stint in the striker role for Everton – awful fixtures limit his appeal however. QPR’s Adel Taarabt saw his first significant FPL returns in Monday’s 0-0 with Newcastle and we expect the Moroccan to come to the fore over QPR’s next set of games.

Many Fantasy managers have given up on the potential of Swansea’s Scott Sinclair and Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon – we’re being less hasty, however. Both have very decent home matches to come and could yet deliver on their strong attacking threat.

Wayne Rooney continues to dominate our forward rankings with City’s Sergio Aguero now installed as his nearest competitor following his hat-trick against Wigan. The uncertainty in the City forward line is a concern, however; with Edin Dzeko suffering last weekend, the Bosnian slips down our rankings. Tonight’s Champions League lineup from Roberto Mancini will tell us more.

Javier Hernandez presents another conundrum. The Mexican announced his return to the starting lineup with a brace in the 5-0 win at the Reebok and has to come into our thinking over United’s tough run of opponents. Danny Welbeck’s return to fitness could threaten his starts and pitch-time, though – much depends on whether Alex Ferguson sees fit to hand Welbeck further opportunities following his encouraging start to the season prior to his hamstring setback.

West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie appears to offer more security at a cheaper price. The Nigerian came back with a bang at Carrow Road on Sunday, putting in an impressive shift and netting the winner for Roy Hodgson’s outfit. A strong run of opponents offer Odemwingie the platform to impress and his partnership with Shane Long could well be in for strong profits in the month ahead.

Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge presents himself as an even cheaper alternative. Like Hernandez and Dzeko, however, rotation is a risk while Sturridge is also tasked with returning Fantasy points from a role on the right of Chelsea’s attacking front three. He had little trouble at Sunderland on Saturday but, with an Old Trafford trip up next, short-term investment is perhaps being stifled. That could change as Andre Villas-Boas’ teamsheet begins to firm up.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Would REALLY appreciate some help on this. I'm not doing as terribly as I might, but my midfield is in the crap right now, with Silva being my only good selection there:

    Given / Vorm
Kompany / Bosinga / Simpson / De Laet / Brown
    Silva / Sinclair / Sessegnon / N'Zogbia / Moses
    Suarez / Rooney / Long

4.9 in the bank. Planning N'Zogbia > either <ata or Meireles after the next game week.

What else can I do to spruce my mid up? United coverage? Wildcard? I'm leaking midfield points like crazy, grr...

    Thanks so much.

Also, I have City coverage in the form of Kompany/Silva - so getting a striker seemed a little much, when my midfield is so dire. Could take a plunge on Young, though I don't suppose Untied vs Chelsea is a good game to get in either Young OR Mata.

oh dear... Sinc, sess, nzog and Moses gotta go! Almmost the exact mid I had... I had to wildcard to avoid losing ground. Dyer for Swansea is a handy bench player for 4.6, and SWP was good for QPR by all accounts (for 6.4). Taarabt was also good aparently, and at 6.5 is potentially a bigger score threat (personally I would go for SWP first). VDV at 9.7 is good value if he recovers in time for the w/e. potential gamble: Arteta at 8.2

Those players in the midfield were amongst what convinced me to wildcard. Thinking about it, I probably should've adopted an "I don't care, Rooney will take care of things" policy instead.

          Fair do's.

Re the four you mentioned, I'd be tempted on SWP. He's only had one game this year and looked half-decent, whereas the others have had four games and are yet to set the world alight...

Sorry for repost from last page but I have to finalize this weeks team tonight.

Happy enough with my team except for the travesty that is DJ Campbell.
The alternatives are not great but was thinking either Long(decent run of fixtures) or Sturridge(high potential and possible benchwarmer) Would welcome some input. Campbells value is now 5.3 and I have 1.5 bank.

The separating of the 'ro' and 'd' over two words is a fine tactic, one I was planning on using myself, although the intentional spelling mistake gives the game away. Maybe if it was some retard like dbronaldo posting then people wouldn't take any notice of the error. 😉

aguerolicious - That is the big concern. I watched the Sunderland-Chelsea game at the weekend and Sunderland's midfield is woefully short of any sort of creativity. Of the two I'd probably pick Long. Klasnic is a bit of risk with N'Gog now on the scene.

Meant to add DJ is a good shout. QPR will create chances with Taarabt SWP and Barton in their team, and if DJ is picked ahead of Bothroyd (which he should be given Bothroyd's misses on Mon) he'll be amongst the goals.

DJ was joint second English goalscorer in PL last year...

All Odem ever did for me was scoring twice against Newcastle. Can't remember any other good memories, and he absolutely exploded after I got rid of him. Bleurgh.

I'm tempted not to reply due to your CFCTom impressions this evening but sod it:

He was awesome, we had him before the bandwagon, then he had some niggling injuries so was stupidly ditched him and he came back with more goals and assists when he wasn't in my team. Finished with 15 goals and 9 assists for WBA! That's Nani-esq.

    Hiya lads,

Just looking for a general scan over of my team lined up for this week.

    Given

    Bosingwa – Enrique – Simpson

    Mata – Young – Nasri – Mikel

    Rooney – Dzeko – Suarez

Subs: Vorm, De Laet, Taylor, Ferguson

Don’t know if not benching Bosingwa is the right choice, but got a feeling Rooney wont be as affective this gameweek against Chelsea, could be a tough game.

Also, who to captain? Possibly Nasri the better choice as opposed to Rooney?

Any help/comment much appreciated, cheers 🙂

I appreciate the comment, but....herendous? really? i really would of thought that team is herendous, no offence? sort of confused on that one. City play fulham, nasri and dzeko going to be affective surely? and surely everyone at least has some sort of chelsea & united coverage, which kinda means everyone is more or less in the same boat? got a sneaky feeling i'll do well regardless 🙂

Not great fixture wise but still looks superb. Nasri is not a better choice than Rooney, captain Dzeko if you want to give it to a city player but Rooney is the most secure option. Better fixtures the following weke as well, you're pretty much sorted except maybe just sort Mikel out when you can.

This GW will be a meh week anyway, I reckon. Low scores in general look to be the order of the day.

The top scorer will probably be some twonk who has a team that will score 25 points every other week and will probably have a GK who saves a pen and keeps a cleanie as captain!

You wildcard a team for the season not for one GW so I'm not sure what Jamsiep is on about anyway.

If you have .5m I'd change Krul to Given so you have two goalkeepers that rotate perfectly that both have good clean sheet potential. Personally, I've gone for Vorm/Krul to save 1.5m but either pair is a good option.

Change Shorey to a £4m Swansea defender. They look alright for clean sheets and rotate with Simpson for all but one of the remaining 34 weeks. Don't know what Shorey's price is but I'm guessing its at least 4.5m which will help with my GK suggestion. Wouldn't do this with my GK combo of Vorm/Krul though.

You'll want to find a little money to upgrade 1 or 2 of the mids. There will be weeks where you struggle to see clean sheet potential for 3 of your defenders, let alone 5. Moses and Dyer offer little and Ferguson is a waste of space. Keep Dyer for bench fodder and the occasional fixture like this week at home to West Brom.

Leaving Rooney out is a big risk though RVP has the potential to work out, especially if you're playing catch up in your league. Not sure about Aguero for 11m. Rotation risk and downgrading here could help out with the rest of your squad, midfield in particular.

        Cheers..

Im playing catchup and most of the teams up top have Rooney, if you also look at the next few UTD fixtures (chelsea/stoke(a)) dont think he'll be putting in any hatricks. Also RVP and arsenal seem to have an easy run coming up (blackburn this weekend) think he'll be able to find the net.

I thought about having Dzeko instead of Aguero but got burnt last week with Dzeko not even playing.

I will take your advice on Shorey/Swansea though even though i do think Roy has West Brom playing as a stingy defensive unit.

Arteta/ Benayoun at the window ? Okay I'll take it , but what about the other 89 days?

I don't think Wenger or those around and above him can escape criticism after this summer.

So many times Wenger has faced big players leaving and replaced expertly, yet this year it was one big mess.

Wenger's record has earned him at least until the end of the season, but if things continue to go wrong, the club will need to change direction. I'm sure even your other half can realise that someone has messed up here!

I blame Sack the Board, he made me do it. I actually didn't mean to post with it though, I quickly changed the gravatar and name, but then decided it was a stupid idea, but forgot to log out, so the next time I posted something it was still using that account. True story. If I can find it the first post will be something completely innocent, with me thinking I was posting as myself.

Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Stoke are all better right now, imo.

That might change, I hope so as I have Arteta, but Arsenal simply are not scary this season and it took a freak goalkeeping error for you to sneak a 1-0 win against Swansea.

Reminds me of when Tyson lost his 'aura of invincibility' and everyone started to beat up on his ass. Same thing Liverpool went through for the last decade or so once teams stopped going to Anfield believing they were beaten before the first whistle was blown.

I agree ,we are not scary right now at all, unless you're talking about scaring you're own supporters.

But there is a lot of quality in the squad. I think adding Arteta and Benayoun will help, but it is essentially still pre-season. The new boys have played 2 (?) games together?

They'll be alright but I think the top 4 may be out of reach this season.

But, like most sports, there is always something unpredictable that happens so you never know. Still got 34 games to play so lots of points up for grabs.

Thanks for Traore though, he looked good for us on Monday night. I think he just needs a run of games to get his confidence up and Neil Warnock will give him that.

I think Traore will be good going forward for you, he's quick and can put in some crosses; but if he has to defend you might not like him as much 😉 .
If he turns into a good defender I will be mildly amused.

MF, I said Traore is good for us. He's not good enough for Arsenal but that doesn't mean he isn't good enough for another prem team with lower expectations.

Re Stoke I said right now as in at this very minute. Over the course of 38 games Arsenal may well end up in top 6 or even top 4, but there has to be a lot of improvement because right now they ain't.

                    My opinion anyways.

Yeah he looks value. I wanted to put him and/or wingie in last week but stuck with the "safer" options of rvp, suarez & dzeko 🙁
Wingie, Mata & rooney in for -4 next week is looking likely.

    A) nasri,adam,mata,adeb,odem,

    leaves 0.3 in the bank

    or

    B) walcot,swp,brunt,hernandez, aguerro,

leaves 1.5 in the bank to swap walcot for mata next week and possibly upgrade klasnic

the rest of the team is:

    begovic/ruddy
    bos,ward,kompany,gibbs,shawcross,
    silva,dyer,
    klasnic

    any advice is appreciated

my main concrn with A) is aguerro rotation, 11m is a lot to risk that could be used to better the midfield and odem and ade are gauranteed to start

my thinking with leaving money in the bank is walcot and klasnic are good options for this gw and bring in mata and change klanic the following week, i dont think the extra 1.5 could give me much better options

              Are you wildcarding?

I'd look to get Rooney in there somehow. He will give you more value than Aguero.

MF with Silva in, Mata looks good I'm hoping to bring him in soon. Maybe Taarabt instead of SWP as he's still on sets and pens plus clearly looks like he'll be getting bonus points if QPR don't lose.

If you're Wc'ing I'd worry less about this GW and more about the next 15 ones as you won't be able to wildcard again until GW 20.
