Our Watchlist rankings, offering a view on mid-term Fantasy picks, have been updated for the forthcoming run of fixtures. You can now view these by each position using the tabbed tables in the sidebar on your homepage.

Read on for our summary of the significant moves in our rankings – complete with discussion on the some of the major prospects on offer.

Ben Foster’s clean sheet at Norwich, coupled with a run of fixtures that sets him up nicely for further returns in the coming weeks, has him climb to the top of our goalkeeper rankings. In truth, there’s little between the top keeper choices available right now, with Joe Hart and Wojech Szczesny available as strong options with those with cash to invest, while Asmir Bergovic, Tim Krul and Shay Given all offer low-to-mid price bracket.

Vincent Kompany’s imperious form and City’s forthcoming home matches has him at the top of our defender rankings, ousting Chelsea’s Jose Boswinga. Kompany looks to offer the greater security within Roberto Mancini’s back line and continues to attract Fantasy Premier League bonus to supplement his returns.

Stoke’s resolute defensive performances have brought three clean sheets in four and, with strong fixtures to come, Robert Huth enjoys a big climb in our rankings. There are cheaper options in the Potters’ back four – notably Ryan Shawcross, although there’s uncertainty surrounding Matt Upson and Jonathan Woodgate who could be set to rotate in the coming weeks. Huth looks a more certain starter and, as last season demonstrated, he brings a significant goal threat which, to this point, has yet to materialise but will surely return as a factor soon.

Everton’s Leighton Baines has a strong fixture in the forthcoming Gameweek but will be stretched in fixtures to follow – his Fantasy owners will likely need to rely on attacking returns to justify his weighty price tag. It’s a drop for Baines, then, with mid-price offerings Steve Taylor, Roger Johnson (with Stephen Ward a strong alternative) nipping above the Everton man with decent fixtures to come. West Brom’s Jonas Olsson and Villa’s Alan Hutton offer value further down our rankings.

David Silva’s sparkling form at the point of City’s midfield keeps him out in front in our midfield rankings. Arseanal’s Theo Walcott is some way behind in second, boosted by strong fixtures which really should bring returns in the coming weeks. Chelsea’s Juan Mata is hovering with intent, however – a trip to Old Trafford this weekend reduces his short-term potential but, following this, we’d expect to see the Spaniard threaten his compatriot at the top of our Watchlist.

The Nani vs Ashley Young debate continues – Young took the early rounds but Nani’s consistency has been strong and, despite not yet offering an explosive return, we’re still backing him to deliver despite impending competition from a fit again Antonio Valencia. This remains an interesting scenario and one that needs monitoring.

Rafael Van der Vaart represents another poser – he’s declared himself fit for the visit of Liverpool to the Lane this weekend but, having seen his side dispose of Wolves at Molineux, Harry Redknnapp may not find room for the Dutchman and break up the Emmanuel Adebayor/Jermain Defoe partnership. Fantasy managers are forced to “wait and see” when it comes to Van der Vaart’s fitness and role – his ability to deliver Fantasy returns is undoubted though, keeping him in our thoughts over the coming weeks.

There is perhaps greater security on offer elsewhere. Everton’s Tim Cahill looks set for another stint in the striker role for Everton – awful fixtures limit his appeal however. QPR’s Adel Taarabt saw his first significant FPL returns in Monday’s 0-0 with Newcastle and we expect the Moroccan to come to the fore over QPR’s next set of games.

Many Fantasy managers have given up on the potential of Swansea’s Scott Sinclair and Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon – we’re being less hasty, however. Both have very decent home matches to come and could yet deliver on their strong attacking threat.

Wayne Rooney continues to dominate our forward rankings with City’s Sergio Aguero now installed as his nearest competitor following his hat-trick against Wigan. The uncertainty in the City forward line is a concern, however; with Edin Dzeko suffering last weekend, the Bosnian slips down our rankings. Tonight’s Champions League lineup from Roberto Mancini will tell us more.

Javier Hernandez presents another conundrum. The Mexican announced his return to the starting lineup with a brace in the 5-0 win at the Reebok and has to come into our thinking over United’s tough run of opponents. Danny Welbeck’s return to fitness could threaten his starts and pitch-time, though – much depends on whether Alex Ferguson sees fit to hand Welbeck further opportunities following his encouraging start to the season prior to his hamstring setback.

West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie appears to offer more security at a cheaper price. The Nigerian came back with a bang at Carrow Road on Sunday, putting in an impressive shift and netting the winner for Roy Hodgson’s outfit. A strong run of opponents offer Odemwingie the platform to impress and his partnership with Shane Long could well be in for strong profits in the month ahead.

Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge presents himself as an even cheaper alternative. Like Hernandez and Dzeko, however, rotation is a risk while Sturridge is also tasked with returning Fantasy points from a role on the right of Chelsea’s attacking front three. He had little trouble at Sunderland on Saturday but, with an Old Trafford trip up next, short-term investment is perhaps being stifled. That could change as Andre Villas-Boas’ teamsheet begins to firm up.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think Mancini will start Dzeko & Tevez against Fulham. That way all his strikers (barring Balotelli) will play 2 out every 3 matches.

is it nuts to go van persie-less or with no arsenal cover for the next few weeks? it just seems that swansea home was their big chance and they couldn't put more than 1 past them (which was given to them by vorm) and should have conceded last minute too?

was about to say how the hell can you have a midfield of mata/young/silva/jarvis/dyer and that team. Not much to say mate, looks pretty good. Me personaly would upgrade holt and sacrifice one of your big midfielders, but that just how im playing the game this season.

I'd be tempted by Nani over Young to save a little bit of cash for potentially similar returns, there was some good analysis somewhere about Man U's super-high conversion rate when it comes to Young's key passes (~66%) that suggested he won't keep it up. Nani is just as good for my money and a good differential 'cos everyone has Young. Risky, but risks are fun 🙂

Generally it looks like a really solid team to me, not dissimilar to my WC squad and once Mata's in a lot of the players look like season-long keepers with some room to rotate the budget options. GJ.

    Some interesting stats –

The Gunners had 19 shots against the Swans at the Emirates but only four were on target. Robin van Persie had four shots without hitting the target once.

Darren Bent has had four shots in four Premier League matches so far this season.

Sergio Aguero has scored six goals from seven shots on target in the PL this season.

Wayne Rooney has scored from eight of his 13 shots on target for Manchester United in the Premier League this season.

Victor Moses has had 11 shots this season without scoring a goal.

Makes my choice of captaining Bent or RVP that much harder.

I'm not dropping Moses either, it shows his attacking ability, it was a positive thing for me - 11 shots, not negative.

If I watched every 90 mins in the prem I would get the same results, this just sums it up.

no mate its not the same.
a player can fire from 50 yards out 5 shots on target that are easily caught by the keeper. some other (hernandez for example) dsnt go for goal exept when its an (almost) open shot or tap in, otherwise he'll look for the pass.
last week boothroyd was at the receiving end of a swp cross and missed the tap in by 1 inch (twice), thats dsnt go into the stats but shows how dangerous he can be with a quality delivery.
so bottom line, no its not the same as watching

I've got Vorm/Taylor, but was planning on losing Vorm in a few weeks anyway. I'm happy enough to keep Taylor with his price.

Also, with Agustien out, that leaves Swansea a bit short of midfielders with some bite (or to put in another way, just short midfielders).

Yeah could seriously hurt what with not being able to score and all. That added cherry of potential clean sheets for Vorm could be a pain too. Although with the way Newcastle are playing Krul's not a bad option for another few weeks anyway. We'll see how things go.

So what's the deal with the Manchester United defenders. Is there anyone representing any good value you think? I really want one but they all come with rotation risks, too high price or injury concerns 😕

But do you really think last night was anything to go by? I watched the Napoli game but first of all United had rotated heavily, and second of all they won't play opponents as good as Benfica that often in the PL.

The way I see it is this:

Ferdinand is coming back, so he's threatening the CB slot. With both Smalling and Jones able to play CB and RB either one of them could play alongside Rio, IF Rio plays at all. Evra has the LB nailed and for some reason Evans keeps playing, so it's a little risky imo. However if you pick whoever starts at RB correctly they'll probably score well!

          It's tricksy...

This is good stuff. Apparently Vidic is only 10 days away now too and he will be first choice.

I feel Jones is the best bet, who would be your pick if you had to pick one? Defender, not goal keeper.

Ahhhh good point, he's a save machine as well. Apparently last season in he conceded the most goals from outside the box, this has forced people to try their luck in most of our games, however we usually close people down quickly limiting the threat of these shots, generating easy points 🙂 I might get him in when I wildcard in a couple weeks actually. Think I've talked myself into it haha.

Soooo, what are your guesses (yes, they're only guesses) as to the City forwards against Fulham this weekend?

Aguero played the full 90 again last night, Dzeko started with Tevez coming on for him in the last 10 minutes.

Could really do with Aguero missing out, and Carlos getting a billion goals (this might be a slight exaggeration). Dzeko and Tevez is my guess.

My money is on Dzeko+Tevez to start.

I'd also be slightly worried about Silva - he's the key player but he's played every game this far and looked knackered towards the end yesterday. Didn't have a very good second half.

It'll be two out of those three rotating constantly all season I'd wager (don't think Balo is going to get much of a look in) which is a bit of a nightmare. I'll be keeping Tevez this week then, and probably downgrade the week after. Don't want a £12M rotation risk. He was only put in as I fancied him for a decent haul against Wigan. 😡

Interesting about Silva, Garg. I was watching the United game and haven't seen the City highlights yet. If he were to miss out, with Aguero, it would be quite sensational...until Aguero comes on for 2 pointer Tevez and bags some goals.

Yeah I think that is one of Dzeko's main points too, that if you compare him to Aguero and Tevez he's a much cheaper player to have rotated.

I'm not gonna try and get people to believe Silva will be rotated here, but all City team looked seriously tired in the end of last game. Outside chance for Fulham to upset them, perhaps?

Hmmm, not sure. Fulham have a game tonight in the Europa League so they're not going to be fresh either. Plus, Fulham haven't actually looked too good so far this season. If I had to put money on it, City win would be the way I'd be going.
