Our Watchlist rankings, offering a view on mid-term Fantasy picks, have been updated for the forthcoming run of fixtures. You can now view these by each position using the tabbed tables in the sidebar on your homepage.

Read on for our summary of the significant moves in our rankings – complete with discussion on the some of the major prospects on offer.

Ben Foster’s clean sheet at Norwich, coupled with a run of fixtures that sets him up nicely for further returns in the coming weeks, has him climb to the top of our goalkeeper rankings. In truth, there’s little between the top keeper choices available right now, with Joe Hart and Wojech Szczesny available as strong options with those with cash to invest, while Asmir Bergovic, Tim Krul and Shay Given all offer low-to-mid price bracket.

Vincent Kompany’s imperious form and City’s forthcoming home matches has him at the top of our defender rankings, ousting Chelsea’s Jose Boswinga. Kompany looks to offer the greater security within Roberto Mancini’s back line and continues to attract Fantasy Premier League bonus to supplement his returns.

Stoke’s resolute defensive performances have brought three clean sheets in four and, with strong fixtures to come, Robert Huth enjoys a big climb in our rankings. There are cheaper options in the Potters’ back four – notably Ryan Shawcross, although there’s uncertainty surrounding Matt Upson and Jonathan Woodgate who could be set to rotate in the coming weeks. Huth looks a more certain starter and, as last season demonstrated, he brings a significant goal threat which, to this point, has yet to materialise but will surely return as a factor soon.

Everton’s Leighton Baines has a strong fixture in the forthcoming Gameweek but will be stretched in fixtures to follow – his Fantasy owners will likely need to rely on attacking returns to justify his weighty price tag. It’s a drop for Baines, then, with mid-price offerings Steve Taylor, Roger Johnson (with Stephen Ward a strong alternative) nipping above the Everton man with decent fixtures to come. West Brom’s Jonas Olsson and Villa’s Alan Hutton offer value further down our rankings.

David Silva’s sparkling form at the point of City’s midfield keeps him out in front in our midfield rankings. Arseanal’s Theo Walcott is some way behind in second, boosted by strong fixtures which really should bring returns in the coming weeks. Chelsea’s Juan Mata is hovering with intent, however – a trip to Old Trafford this weekend reduces his short-term potential but, following this, we’d expect to see the Spaniard threaten his compatriot at the top of our Watchlist.

The Nani vs Ashley Young debate continues – Young took the early rounds but Nani’s consistency has been strong and, despite not yet offering an explosive return, we’re still backing him to deliver despite impending competition from a fit again Antonio Valencia. This remains an interesting scenario and one that needs monitoring.

Rafael Van der Vaart represents another poser – he’s declared himself fit for the visit of Liverpool to the Lane this weekend but, having seen his side dispose of Wolves at Molineux, Harry Redknnapp may not find room for the Dutchman and break up the Emmanuel Adebayor/Jermain Defoe partnership. Fantasy managers are forced to “wait and see” when it comes to Van der Vaart’s fitness and role – his ability to deliver Fantasy returns is undoubted though, keeping him in our thoughts over the coming weeks.

There is perhaps greater security on offer elsewhere. Everton’s Tim Cahill looks set for another stint in the striker role for Everton – awful fixtures limit his appeal however. QPR’s Adel Taarabt saw his first significant FPL returns in Monday’s 0-0 with Newcastle and we expect the Moroccan to come to the fore over QPR’s next set of games.

Many Fantasy managers have given up on the potential of Swansea’s Scott Sinclair and Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon – we’re being less hasty, however. Both have very decent home matches to come and could yet deliver on their strong attacking threat.

Wayne Rooney continues to dominate our forward rankings with City’s Sergio Aguero now installed as his nearest competitor following his hat-trick against Wigan. The uncertainty in the City forward line is a concern, however; with Edin Dzeko suffering last weekend, the Bosnian slips down our rankings. Tonight’s Champions League lineup from Roberto Mancini will tell us more.

Javier Hernandez presents another conundrum. The Mexican announced his return to the starting lineup with a brace in the 5-0 win at the Reebok and has to come into our thinking over United’s tough run of opponents. Danny Welbeck’s return to fitness could threaten his starts and pitch-time, though – much depends on whether Alex Ferguson sees fit to hand Welbeck further opportunities following his encouraging start to the season prior to his hamstring setback.

West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie appears to offer more security at a cheaper price. The Nigerian came back with a bang at Carrow Road on Sunday, putting in an impressive shift and netting the winner for Roy Hodgson’s outfit. A strong run of opponents offer Odemwingie the platform to impress and his partnership with Shane Long could well be in for strong profits in the month ahead.

Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge presents himself as an even cheaper alternative. Like Hernandez and Dzeko, however, rotation is a risk while Sturridge is also tasked with returning Fantasy points from a role on the right of Chelsea’s attacking front three. He had little trouble at Sunderland on Saturday but, with an Old Trafford trip up next, short-term investment is perhaps being stifled. That could change as Andre Villas-Boas’ teamsheet begins to firm up.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I could reply endlessly on this point, but to spare you - 'Nope'

Shoulda gone at least one more game (or, good chances too). Terrible tactician and evaluator of personnel. Biggest problem: we had no specific style under him. I don't mean 'panache' or 'savoire faire' ... but a coherent and cohesive philosophy of play.

One of Klinsman's primary jobs is to instill some sort of philosophy.

rooney Adebayor graham are my forwards now i dont see the point in playing rooney and bowsinga as if rooney scores it will just cancel out anything bowsinga does the same goes for adebayor and enrique

so my back 3 is woodgate de laet and kompany with rooney and adebayor up front my other forward is graham

Morning guys, could do with a bit of sage advice if anyone has any going? My team looks a bit of a shambles this week and I'm tempted to wildcard, but would rather not. Here it is:

    Vorm (Schwarzer)
Baines Warnock Simpson (Bosingwa) (De Laet)
    Walcott Toure Hoolahan Moses (Brunt)
    Rooney Aguero Fletcher

The midfield hurts my eyes... with Fletcher and Brunt injury doubts, Hoolahan a huge rotation risk, Toure doing nothing much, Aguero a potential rotation risk and away to Fulham, and Rooney playing Chelsea, Walcott (rather worryingly) looks like my most likely source of attacking points this week.

    Wildcard time?

That's the sort of thing I was looking for: nice, reassuring words. Keep calm and carry on.

I've got one freebie and 1.4m in the bank. Buggered if I know what to do with it. I might make the hideously unexciting transfer of Brunt->Dyer this week, to free up more funds for Mata and Silva who I eventually want in my midfield for Walcott and Toure.

Besides the next int'l week, which is close and where you'll definitely want a WC, the fixtures are in a transitory period: the teams with good fix's seem to be near-ending, whilst teams like Utd, Chels, 'Pool, Tot, etc. have fix's that will improving in a week or two.

Brunt > Dyer is lateral, but if you'll need the money next, it seems the smart - if unexciting - choice.

I could... not entirely convinced that Aguero isn't going to be a complete gun yet though- the type of player who even if he's benched has a good chance of a goal-scoring cameo.

When I play my wildcard, if he's proving to be a genuine rotation risk, I'll definitely consider dropping him down to Ade, Suarez, even Wingie in order to beef up the midfield, but I'm not sure I want to drop him just yet.

Interesting suggestion though, it could be a stroke of genius.

Fair points. I guess I'm just wary of any City striker right at the minute, until there's any injury/transfer during the next window it's too hit and miss. Though Aguero does seem like the type who can grab a goal or assist even coming off the bench.

At least with Adebayor you know he's fairly secure compared to the City strikers, only Defoe and possibly VDV to contend with (and VDV only until his next inevitable injury).

dont wild card, use free transfer if worried, a 4 point hit is not a bad thing.
Back line looks solid, midfiled you need to upgrade Yaya to Silva or alike.
Forwards look fine to me, as long as Fletcher is fit.
I have a simliar problem with Fletcher and I am looking at upgrading Yaya and Nzogbia from my mids, but not going to wildcard.

The player that is affecting Yaya's out put is Dejong, when he play Yaya has the freedom to bomb forward, when he doesn't he must sit deep. Nasri being there doesn't affect Yaya that much IMO

What's going on with De Jong? I read he was possibly due back last week, and now he's missed the CL too and there's no new news.

It's definitely his absence that has reduced Yaya's threat- just look at the Swansea game and all those shots he had (that persuaded me to drop Silva for him in the Great Wildcard Fiasco of GW2)

    My team:

    Vorm(Krul)
    Simpson Enrique Kompany (Bosingwa,Briggs)
    Taarabt Arteta Silva N.Dyer (Brunt)
    Dzeko Rooney RVP(C)

    The dilemma:
Have chosen to play Vorm and Simpson thus giving me the chance of a clean sheet from Swansea or Newcastle. Rooney is playing against Bosingwa so if he were to score that'd rule a clean sheet out and i'd then be relying on attacking returns from him.
I've also heard from a couple of Chelsea fans on here thinking that Ivanovic will get the nod against United, Chelsea have been very attacking in regards to their defenders and i'm not so sure they will take that risk against United, especially with Young/Nani/Valencia down the flanks...
Brunt is a big doubt and N.Dyer was my sub, anyone seen him play?

    Cheers all 🙂

As you might see above, I don't care about those sort of match-ups - where players play each other. I select the best 11 each week - not only isn't there a chance that both might produce, but you hedge your bets if only one does. If you pick one and the *other* produces = sadness.

I think that Brunt was rested due to int'l matches. He's club captain. He'll play. On the off chance he doesn't, you'll have Dyer to step up.

I'm going with Vorm over Krul, and playing Simpson, that way i can cover both team's clean sheet potential.
I'm thinking of that also with Brunt, though there is alot of compettition for a midfield spot in the West Brom line-up and they did win without him last weekend.
Just concerned that if i play Brunt and Vorm, only one can really prosper.

Yeh valid point. I agree with your post below that Swansea have to score soon and it will be one of those 3. I watched the Arsenal v Swansea game and Dyer looked really promising in that one (first time ive really seen him play). Very energetic and looked dangerous on numerous occasions. Ive considered chuckin him on for Adam tbh but just cant justify having that much money on the bench.
Also might go a sneaky punt on Ward (c) if someone can talk me out of Rooney lol.

I watched that game too and thought Dyer did look a handful. Not sure I saw him have many shots though...

tezza, if Ward does indeed play up front (which I hope he doesn't as I have Fletcher) then that would be an outrageous punt and one which you could dine out on for a long time if it comes off... but if it doesn't and Rooney scores big you'll hate yourself.

To take a four point hit or not?

Yaya and N'Zogbia to Silva and O'Hara/Anderson/SWP.

    Current line up is

    Given/Vorm

    Baines, Bosingwa, Warnock, Brown, Simpson

    Young, Yaya, NZogbia, Moses, Fox

    Rooney, Suarez, Fletcher

Any other thoughts on this average team people?

Rated 50/50 at the moment, Woy has bigged up Long & Odemwingie as a partnership so we will carry on playing 442, Scharner and Mulumbu or unbreakable in the centre of midfield so we have about a thousand midfielders fighting it out for a spot on each side of midfield. Dorrans should keep his place after he impressed last game and Thomas will aswel imo.

I've got rid of Brunt, he will play some games but we basically have Gera, Morrison, Tchoyi, Thomas, Dorrans and Brunt to choose from for just two spots, all decent players too.

Damn... in a season where we're all scraping around for mid-to-low-priced midfielders I think it's very selfish of Woy to hog them all.

Brunt might be for the chop in my side methinks.

Would a midfield of Mata Silva VDV 6.0? and Dyer be good OR is Young/Nani considered essential?

I think SWP would be a good addition to your midfield for about 6.4. Given may be playing hurt so I wonder how long he will last.

do you have ManU coverage with Rooney or Hernandez? if yes, you don't need Young/Nani, I reckon.

last week, at the last minute, I put in RVP for Aguero. i had planned to put in RVP for Torres, but decided to get rid of Aguero at the last moment. that hurt. a lot. i did it because it seemed that rotation at ManC would be between Tevez and Aguero, not Dzeko. Aguero went to Asia on the international break and Tevez didn't, so i thought Aguero would be rested. but... Aguero has played in every game this season.

my question: is Aguero going to be in every game? do we know what Mancini's rotation philosophy will be? i know he said that Ag and Dz are great players, and Tev has already proven himself, and no Balotelli for a bit, but, what does that mean? should i just stay away from this? stay away from City strikers?

this looks to be the weekly torture of this season...

I would say it will be Aguero + Dzeko at most times, Tevez will cause some trouble every now and then - Aguero seems to expensive for that kind of risk but Dzeko at his cheap price is ideal

Also, going by reports from Man City v Napoli (Didn't watch the game), apparently most people seemed to think taking Dzeko off for Tevez was a terrible move and that Tevez did nothing to show that he warranted a starting position come the weekend.

    A) nasri,adam,mata,adeb,odem,

    leaves 0.3 in the bank

    or

    B) walcot,swp,brunt,hernandez, aguerro,

leaves 1.5 in the bank to swap walcot for mata next week and possibly upgrade klasnic

the rest of the team is:

    begovic/ruddy

Reckon you're better off with A, too many question marks (SWP, Brunt, Aguero) in B.

Plus Walcott to Mata will take 0.5 of your kitty, leaving you 7.2 max to upgrade Klasnic - don't know if you're getting anyone much better for that price.

my worry about A is my max striker will be 8m making it difficult if i want to bring in someone tht costs more than that in the future, also no utd attacking coverage seems crazy, problem with b is aguerro and hernandez are rotatation risks and im hurting my mid f by having them at big prices, i could get rooney but i feel that rivals in y mini leauge that already have him will be difficult to catch without differentials, no point scoring big and just getting the same points as them, it is all very confusing

True, but besides Rooney (who you've already ruled out) is there any premium striker you'd want? Aguero/Hernandez may be rotated, Bent is out of form, RVP hasn't fired up yet, etc etc.

If you want Utd coverage, grab Nani (9.9) instead of Nasri (9.6)?

i like your plan B). is Gerrard back next gameweek? what will his return mean for Adam?

i had Odem last year and he was magic. not sure if he will be again this year. WBA doesn't seem to have the same "luck" this season.

Adebayor is going to score boatloads of goals. i am trying to find a way to get him in for Gabby.

Walcott has good fixtures coming up and Mata has ManU next. after this gameweek, i like the plan to replace Wal with Mata.

don't need to say anything about Her or Ag... they are the reason B is better than A.

O'Hara's a great player. lots of heart. but he isn't necessarily the most offensive. at 6, maybe Hunt at Wolves, maybe Drenthe at Toffees, maybe Jarvis or Anderson (ManU) or Cabaye (NewU).

    B) Jamie O'Hara

swp, i think he was looking very hungry against newcastle, also warnock's interview was encouraging when he said he thinks swp can score bags of goals this season, it shows the manager has plans to play him in advanced positions and see's him as the main goal threat from midfield, when the manager is saying such things the belief will be passed to the player

SWP, Warnock said he would roam, but then put Taarabt in that roaming spot. it is hard to take SWP over Taarabt. i think Jarvis, but i went SWP. i did it b/c Jarvis banged up. i like Jarvis better though. maybe in the end, i will have Taarabt though...

Putting a lot of faith in West Brom to keep cleansheets... though I guess you don't have to play Foster and Shorey together unless you're sure they won't concede (I'm in the same boat with Vorm and N.Taylor).

Not sure on Gervinho - major differential but would want to see something out of besides cards before investing that much, especially with decent cheaper options available.

Someone was saying yesterday that he's now on penalties for Sunderland, so may be worth holding onto for that reason?

he is also a very creative player, i saw him playing france a bit, he dominated and showed gile ussally reserved for the likes of Ronaldo or Messi....

Eddie it is, because as we like to say, EDDIE BETTS KICK SOME GOALS.

Not a Blues fan BTW (I'm Freo), but hoping they knock off the Weagles this weekend!

                i'm a blue,
but don't think we can get em,
No Kreuzer or Waite.... maybe no Murphy

ur boys were hard done by, if big sandi stands up u could be top 4...

I thought it was Gibbs who was out? Is Murphy gone too?

Just want the whole WC love affair to be over with, it's nauseating being in Perth when they're up and about. Reckon your small forwards can trouble them, they don't have any real matchups for Eddie and co. If Warnock just puts his knee into Cox first bounce, it'll even things up a lot...

I swear this was the most frustrating Freo season I can remember (which is saying something), just when we'd get someone back from injury another one would go do. Never seen anything like it.

You have RVP for Arsenal coverage and Gervinho has not prove anything yet (although I think he will create crapload of assists) so imo its better to go with Ade and save some money.

going with this for the weekend:

    Vorm (Krul)
    Simpson Enrique Kompany (Bosingwa, Briggs)
    Taarabt Silva Arteta N.Dyer (Brunt)
    Dzeko Rooney RVP(C)

I am thinking about who to start between Bosingwa and Simpson (or Da Laet), what convinced you to start with Simpson instead of Bosingwa? Cause I think both will concede but Bosingwa have more attacking potential but also sweating if Rooney is having another field day..

AV v NewU will be nil nil. Simpson is a better call this week than Bos.

      i like it a lot.

      but:

why Briggs? i read that he would be a great OOP, but he wasn't. he was d. and he's only played one game. are you stuck with him and will get rid of him when you can?

also, is Brunt going to be like last year? seems there are better choices: Jarv, Anderson, Henderson, Cabaye>

but good team; i am picking at ur subs.

      is this a WC?

Realistically speaking, what are the chances the Newcastle will keep a cleanie away to Aston Villa. I need to solve my Simpson or DeLaet conundrum. Fml.

Gotta go with the NewU defense over Norwich surely. Altho i dont think either will keep sheets tbh.
