[sbu_large_image] Key Battle

Following on from last Friday’s piece, we take a look at some of the key battles ahead of the weekend’s batch of fixtures. These are some of the one-to-one duels that could ultimately prove decisive in settling their respective matches as well as, of course, determining what way the Fantasy points fall from both an offensive and defensive point of view.

Gervinho v Michel Salgado

Steve Kean’s side have been poor so far this season- failing to keep a clean sheet in any of their four games; Rovers have just one point to their name and the fans are already voicing their disapproval. With both games at Ewood Park ending in defeat, the visit of Arsenal –buoyed by their midweek draw in Dortmund- is hardly the easiest of fixtures for the under-fire Scotsman.

Having slipped off the Fantasy radar following a debut red card at Newcastle, Gervinho returns to action after serving his subsequent three-game domestic ban. In comparison to the more ponderous Andrei Arshavin, the Ivorian’s directness will bring an added urgency to Arsenal’s attack. Gervinho’s pace and trickery would give the quickest of full-backs plenty problems- this week sees him come face to face with Rovers’ veteran Michel Salgado. While Theo Walcott could be up against Martin Olsson on the other flank (if Chris Samba is ruled out), Gervinho could be the answer to unlocking the hosts’ back-four and grab the Gunners a second league win on the trot.

Nani v Ashley Cole

Nani has been somewhat under the Fantasy radar this season, thanks mainly to Ashley Young. The former Villa winger has so far offered greater Fantasy returns and as a result has jumped in price to 10.3 while Nani has dropped to 9.9, with the former’s performance in the 8-2 win over Arsenal catching Fantasy managers’ eyes.

A comparison of the pair’s stats, however, show Nani has offered Man United a more consistent threat on the right, without yet grabbing a substantial points haul; he has had more shots and created almost double the number of goalscoring opportunities of the two.

Sir Alex Ferguson rested both his wingers for the midweek trip to Benfica and a fully refreshed Nani should give Ashley Cole plenty to think about this Sunday afternoon as Chelsea attempt to stop the United juggernaut from picking up yet another three points.

Leighton Baines v Ronnie Stam

Everton have struggled at home so far- just one point from their two games at Goodison is typical of their familiar slow start to the season. Key to tomorrow’s match with Wigan will, as always, be Leighton Baines. He’s in good creative form right now, too; Baines laid on more goalscoring chances than any other player last week, producing the sort of service more associated with a winger than a full-back.

David Moyes will be desperate for the three points before embarking on a horrendous run of fixtures that includes showdowns with both Manchester clubs as well as facing Liverpool and Chelsea in the next five weeks and if the Toffees are to grab a win, Baines is likely to be instrumental.

With Emmerson Boyce looking likely to be ruled out with a hamstring strain, Ronnie Stam is lined up to make an appearance in the Wigan right-back berth. Not renowned for his defensive output, the Dutchman’s more attack-minded sensibilities could play right into Baines’ hands as the home side forage forward time and again down their left flank. If Wigan are to prevail at Goodison, much may rely on Stam’s ability to knuckle down and nullify the left-back’s threat.

Nani vs Cole? Surely Young vs Bosingwa is more interesting no?

Thought that was a strange choice when Cole is excellent and Bosingwa can't defend for poo poos.

I see what you did there, Gea when pronounced in the English way, sounds similair to gay, so what you did was change it completely and spelt it in a way that is meant to undermine him.

He's almost the exception to the rule about form being temporary and class being permanent.

His form seems to be permanent.

Actually can't think of someone who's gone from magic to complete toss so quickly.

    Mancini om Tevez:

"In this moment there are players that are better than him but Carlos is here training," he said.

"Carlos will have a chance to play. I don't know if he is happy but every player that can't play is not happy. This is normal.

    "He will have his moment."

So I have this problem that my new team might be a bit too unbalanced, with both Dyer and Ferguson in it. Would anyone here rather have two out of Walters/Jarvis/Taarabt/SWP/M Petrov (and another 1m in the bank roughly) than Walcott and Ferguson?

I can't quite get my head around this one.

From those choices I would go SWP and M Petrov. Both will whip in dangerous crosses and take long shots at goal. I remember when M Petrov was awesome in his debut season for City. An assist every week.

Thinking of going against my own rules of not captaining a defender and handing the armband to Baines, also have Silva and Rooney as options.

What are peoples thoughts on Baines (C) or should I go with of of the others.

He's a great option for this week, but the trouble is Everton being Everton, the match v Wigan could well end up 1-1 or something.

      Rooney for me.

Rooney cant keep banging in hattricks, and it is against Chelsea so should not be that many goals.

Baines should get at least a goal/assist and possibly a CS which should be 11+, then again I have been bitten many times by captaining defenders.

And Rooney doesn't have to get a hattrick to be a good captain choice. A goal could well get him 9 (18) - which is not asking a lot by any means.

        +1.

And that's from a Baines and Rooney owner.

Rooney may give you a 2pt captain special this gw, but close to 50% of FPL gamers will probably captain him this week.

So, I doubt that you'll lose that much ground by sticking the armband on him this week.

          Absolutely.

As frsutrating as it will be if Baines rakes the points in and Rooney fails, at least Baines is already a relative differential, even without the armband.

man city forwards aguero/dzeko rotation risk choose silva.
      manu have nani cover.
west brom (long) long term can bring lots of points.
aston villa bent and gabby only front for now. gabby cheaper.
i can always rotate bench which looks pretty good.

so is gabby a risk to captain?

    on a WC, team is:

    vorm/given
    staylor/warnock/ward/delaet/bosingwa
    arteta.nzog/obertan/cahill/silva
    odem/gervinho/aguero

the .8 in the bank is for cahill > mata next week, and under no circumstances will i leave myself less than .7 in the bank.

had gervinho prior to the latest article, but the article is making me think i need to downgrade nzog and upgrade arteta to nani. again, leaving myself .7 to work next week's transfer.

    any thoughts on the team?

I got a biggie of a problem.. Currently got Ashley Cole, Bosingwa, Smalling in my defence with Simpson as backup, Ashley Young in midfield and Rooney on top. Suggestions on what the heck i should do? Chelsea got Swansea, Bolton, Everton and QPR coming up, Smalling facing Stoke and Norwich. Tempted to transfer out Cashley, and take a big chance with both Smalling and Bosingwa in defence. But then again, ashley and bosingwa both could be good against cfc upcoming fixtures.. whaaat to do

they generally play on opposite wings. people are telling me to upgrade arteta to walcott, that's how certain people think his start is.

if they play the same shape as at dortmund, benayoun might be the one to want. but needing to keep the wins coming, might arsene opt for a more defensive 4th midfielder rather than the more attacking benayoun? i guess it's virtually the same decision as against dortmund, but will benayoun be up for another start? so given that uncertainty and the confidence of people at FFS in walcott's impending returns, sticking with walcott seems to make sense.

taarabt has to get his groove back sometime, but brunt's fixtures are better and he will probably be back next GW, so i guess sticking with brunt could also be a decent move.

Hey guys, need a bit of help. There's a few players I'm looking at getting in over the next few weeks, but unsure which order to do them in. I've not made any transfers this week yet, so still have a free one left. I also have 0.9 in the bamk.

The players I'm looking at bringing in are: Dzeko, Adebayor, Arteta, (Barkley/Dorrans/Egales), and Warnock.

They will be replacing: Suarez, Holt, Brunt, Walcott and Bosingwa.

My team at the moment is:

    Vorm, Mignolet
Da Laet, Ward, Kompany, Simpson, Bosingwa
    Young, Brunt, Silva, Walcott, Dyer
    Holt, Rooney, Suarez

Which transfer would be best this week out of the above, and should I make more than one?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I've learnt my lesson last week. Have three City players by all means, but captain, no.

What? It changes to a double if Tevez doesn't play?

    Given
    Lescott Baines Simpson
    Moses Sessegon Yaya Sinclair
    Rooney Dzeko Bent

    Ruddy, Bosingwa, Surman, Caulker

Have 2 free transfers... What would one suggest??
Thinkin next week Baines is gone and Mata is coming in also!

I'd get rid of Yaya Toure and Surman.

If you've kept Sessengon and Sinclair, you might as well play them this week.
