[sbu_large_image] Key Battle

Following on from last Friday’s piece, we take a look at some of the key battles ahead of the weekend’s batch of fixtures. These are some of the one-to-one duels that could ultimately prove decisive in settling their respective matches as well as, of course, determining what way the Fantasy points fall from both an offensive and defensive point of view.

Gervinho v Michel Salgado

Steve Kean’s side have been poor so far this season- failing to keep a clean sheet in any of their four games; Rovers have just one point to their name and the fans are already voicing their disapproval. With both games at Ewood Park ending in defeat, the visit of Arsenal –buoyed by their midweek draw in Dortmund- is hardly the easiest of fixtures for the under-fire Scotsman.

Having slipped off the Fantasy radar following a debut red card at Newcastle, Gervinho returns to action after serving his subsequent three-game domestic ban. In comparison to the more ponderous Andrei Arshavin, the Ivorian’s directness will bring an added urgency to Arsenal’s attack. Gervinho’s pace and trickery would give the quickest of full-backs plenty problems- this week sees him come face to face with Rovers’ veteran Michel Salgado. While Theo Walcott could be up against Martin Olsson on the other flank (if Chris Samba is ruled out), Gervinho could be the answer to unlocking the hosts’ back-four and grab the Gunners a second league win on the trot.

Nani v Ashley Cole

Nani has been somewhat under the Fantasy radar this season, thanks mainly to Ashley Young. The former Villa winger has so far offered greater Fantasy returns and as a result has jumped in price to 10.3 while Nani has dropped to 9.9, with the former’s performance in the 8-2 win over Arsenal catching Fantasy managers’ eyes.

A comparison of the pair’s stats, however, show Nani has offered Man United a more consistent threat on the right, without yet grabbing a substantial points haul; he has had more shots and created almost double the number of goalscoring opportunities of the two.

Sir Alex Ferguson rested both his wingers for the midweek trip to Benfica and a fully refreshed Nani should give Ashley Cole plenty to think about this Sunday afternoon as Chelsea attempt to stop the United juggernaut from picking up yet another three points.

Leighton Baines v Ronnie Stam

Everton have struggled at home so far- just one point from their two games at Goodison is typical of their familiar slow start to the season. Key to tomorrow’s match with Wigan will, as always, be Leighton Baines. He’s in good creative form right now, too; Baines laid on more goalscoring chances than any other player last week, producing the sort of service more associated with a winger than a full-back.

David Moyes will be desperate for the three points before embarking on a horrendous run of fixtures that includes showdowns with both Manchester clubs as well as facing Liverpool and Chelsea in the next five weeks and if the Toffees are to grab a win, Baines is likely to be instrumental.

With Emmerson Boyce looking likely to be ruled out with a hamstring strain, Ronnie Stam is lined up to make an appearance in the Wigan right-back berth. Not renowned for his defensive output, the Dutchman’s more attack-minded sensibilities could play right into Baines’ hands as the home side forage forward time and again down their left flank. If Wigan are to prevail at Goodison, much may rely on Stam’s ability to knuckle down and nullify the left-back’s threat.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What's happened to all the Suarez love guys? I still expect him to come up with a huge score rather soon but he's not in many RMTs I read now, and especially not in many wildcard teams. What is it I'm missing? Fixtures are really not that bad are they?

Haha!! so glad someone has picked up on this point, totally agree matey.

Seems a lot of people are forgetting that Suarez is deadly, and all this talk of him 'looking tired' blah blah blah is nothing, ive even staked my captaincy choice on him this weekend, and it will be staying that way. I know i'll be tempted to captain Rooney, but really cannot see him scoring any more than 1 against chelsea, chelsea coming off the back of a good victory at stamford bridge and united/rooney inparticularly looked tired and out of breath at times.

Suarez will more than make up for some minor flaws against tottenham, he is defo remaining captain for me regardless of what anyone says 🙂

I'm thinking about wildcarding next week to change my team from

    Vorm, Given,
    Bosingwa, Baines, Warnock, Kompany, Simpson
    Brunt, Jarvis, Mikel, Sessesgnon, Anderson
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko

    to

    Vorm, Begovic,
    Bosingwa, Shawcross, Warnock, Cahill, Simpson
    Brunt, Jarvis, Mata, Nasri, Dyer
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko

That team looks ace to me with the fixtures that are coming up but its not very flexible, would maybe look at getting out Suarez or Dzeko at some time for a strong defender I dunno.

My question is i've got 3pts in the bank and a free transfer I might as well use as it'll be wasted in the wildcard week to take a one week punt on a player replacing either, Simpson, Sess, Anderson or Mikel.

Anybody got any recommendations? I was thinking Yaya, Tim Cahill, Drenthe or Walcott maybe... I know alotta people have faith in Arsenal but I'm still utterly unconvinced by them and blackburn will be fighting hard at home.

    Any help greatly appreciated!

I think I fancy Suarez to outscore Rooney this GW.. nice open game against Spurs who aren't exactly watertight, whereas United Chelsea probably won't have many goals in it.

So it's Suarez captain unless I can confidently give it to Silva or Dzeko and not worry over them starting.

    Tricky 😐

I actually think Silva is the safest captain pick. On form an due a goal the way hes playing. Also playing a fairly poor Fullham. Rooney may get less game time due to CL and RVP is unpredictablr also. You cant say hes on form after one goal, on top of that Arsenal havent gelled yet so captaining him is a risk.

Need som help here. Decided to wait for news about S. Fletcher but now the price has dropped and I cant afford Odem as planned. Got 7.3 to spend after selling Fletcher. Thinking of going for Long who has better fixtures than Klasnic. Or maybe Agbonlahor?

Depends how many GWs ahead you're looking.

Klasnic for this week, or there's Best of Newcastle.

      Agbonlahor or Sturridge, imo.

Thanks! Agbonlahor it is. I agree about Klasnic for short term but I cant afford short term (my bench needs some work).

Currently have Brunt starting, with Simpson and Moses as my respective subs in that order. Have I got that right? Brunt's fitness is a gamble, but I can't see Simpson keeping a cleanie or Moses doing much at Everton.

trouble with new defenders is I just cant see them keeping all those CS. So they continue to keep adding to my bench points total.

Is there a danger Silva only plays like 60 minutes since he played the full 90 minutes Wednesday?

I'm worried he'll be rested since he's played every game so far, I'm keeping him in my team but hes out of my captain's choice

Thanks.. are you captaining Rooney or RVP instead? I have Silva for now as he's very consistent but I'm afraid he will get limited game time!
