Restored to the regular Monday slot, we boil the Gameweek past down to three key elements, lauding the return of a Premier League marksman, recognising the transformation of some Shepherds Bush strugglers and examining just how budget Fantasy talent has played its part in an extraordinary opening to our season.

The Player

Yakubu could barely have chosen a better time to make his return to the Premier League scoresheet. With a pocket of protestors in the car park and general malaise falling over Steve Kean’s tenure at Ewood Park, the Blackburn boss put his faith in the barrel-chested Nigerian and was duly repaid in style.

While Yakubu is undoubtedly carrying some extra pounds, his appetite for goals remains healthy enough to suggest that he could be an unlikely saviour for Kean’s job and Blackburn’s Premier League status. His first goal was subliming accepted – a first time poke from a Junior Hoilett incision through a static Arsenal defence. While that gave Rovers a foothold, the second, a tap in from a driven Steven N’Zonzi cross-shot, was far simpler but arguably more significant in that it gave them the advantage. Blackburn now have themselves a player who will take up goalscoring positions and has the talent to convert them into precious goals. In Hoilett, they also have a twinkling talent that should provide ample feed for a rabid Yak.

As a cheap forward option, Yakubu is clearly on the Fantasy radar. An away trip to a miserly Newcastle, followed by a home clash with City does cast doubt on the wisdom of an early investment, but the Yak’s time may well come soon enough.

The Team

A transfusion rather than a mere injection of new blood appears to have had an instinct impact at QPR. Neil Warnock’s mass acquisition of proven Premier League talent has transformed Rangers into a side widely tipped to struggle, to one capable of dominating a resurgent Wolves in their own lair. The 3-0 win at Molineux demonstrated the value of new skipper Joey Barton, whilst providing more evidence that Shaun Wright-Phillips is still capable of dazzling once he’s given the opportunity and platform to thrive. The free-role up in support of the lone striker has already seen the former England winger prosper and, in just two matches, he has emerged as a viable Fantasy prospect. Behind him, the industry of Alejandro Faulin and Shaun Derry, combined with the wizardry of Adel Taarabt, gives the R’s a midfield that bristles with muscle and creativity.

A new look defence also appears to have gelled. Warnock’s pairing of Danny Gabbidon and Anton Ferdinand know each other from their Upton Park days and have already given Rangers an assured foundation in front of the reliable Paddy Kenny. Armand Traore’s leggy pace down the left has also proved an effective weapon, balanced by Luke Young’s consistency on the opposite flank.

Fantasy managers are re-considering the boosted Loftus Road squad, with budget option Gabbidon and the flourishing Wright-Phillips, surely set for further investment. Taarabt meanwhile, now appears to be on the periphery, although his continued creative spark and set-piece threat will surely bear fruit soon enough.

The Talking Point

While Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero continue to provide heavyweight returns up front, the selection strategy of a bottom heavy Fantasy squad has been boosted further by the recent performances of budget defences – Swansea, QPR and Newcastle.

As we alluded to in Saturday’s Knee Jerk – with five Gameweek’s gone, this tactic has been rewarded handsomely. Clean sheets for Swansea and QPR this weekend, fuelled by more goals for Rooney and Aguero, plus the strike from budget friendly Nathan Dyer – only compounded matters.

Can such a strategy continue to go on thriving? Certainly we expected QPR to start well given their fixtures, while Swansea were always set to be a good option at the Liberty Stadium having conceded so few goals at home last term – the visiting opposition thus far has been obliging however.

Newcastle meanwhile, are compensating for a lack of attacking flair, by tightening further at the back – founded on a sound central midfield pairing in Cheik Tiote and Yohan Cabaye.

Defensive acquisitions from all three of those sides looks a sound option, although it’s debatable just whether QPR and Swansea can maintain form that has seen them notch 3 clean sheets in 5 matches.

So far, mid-price Fantasy options have generally disappointed across the board – the likes of Charles N’Zogbia, Jamie O’Hara, Stephane Sessegnon – the list of failing mid-range Fantasy prospects goes on at length. It remains to be seen if these attacking options can wake from the slumber to provide differentials but, in defensive terms, we can surely expect Jose Enrique, Jose Bosingwa and Vincent Kompany to provide increasing value as the season progresses, while the United defence and the pricey prospect of Leighton Baines, will also be expected to deliver significant profits in due course.

The trick is, to time the rebalancing of our squads accordingly – right now, the bottom heavy Fantasy lineup is winning hands down.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Believe me I was agonizing about what to do with my strikers today, particularly because of impending price mayhem on the Ade/Aguero/Dzeko/Suarez fronts. My frontline was Dzeko | Rooney | Suarez so I ruled out Dzeko->Ade because then I lose Citeh goal coverage. Suarez->Aguero wasn't possible either for transfer hit reasons. I've decided to save a transfer and make this the last chance weekend for Suarez and Dzeko. This weekend basically I decide which strikers are cutting it. If they fail I'll go Aguero and possibly Ade depending on his performance.

    Lineup this week:
    Given (Vorm)
    Bosingwa Enrique R.Taylor
    Silva Mata (VC) Walcott SWP
    Suarez (C) Rooney Odemwingie
1.1 in the bank, most likely Walcott > Nani/VDV next week
Thinking of swapping Vorm in as i think he will get more saves and both him and Given should concede (hopefully to Mata and SWP 🙂 )
Suarez captain makes sense of that bunch, yeah?

Suarez is always a viable captains pick, but liverpool have not been setting the world of fire last two weeks so it would be a gamble of sorts. Man City at home to Everton seems the best fixture this week and Silva is in form as well.

A majority of people who have Given/Vorm GK combo will play Given so I can see the logic in playing Vorm. Hopefully they keep the ball off Chelsea so they don't batter them.

I'm picking Vorm, I guess FPL has finally cracked me. Basically he's going to have lots of saves to make right? And the Chelsea frontline isn't quite working so their conversion rate may suck, especially open goals. 1pt for every 3 saves... if he makes say 15 saves ..... hmmmm... 😀

I take it most people are playing 3-4-3 as am I.

What other formations are working for you, with which players? Tempted to go 4-3-3, using money from downgrading a mid to fund attack-crazy fullbacks in good defences. (Bosingwa, Jones, etc?)

Playing 4,4,2 with baines so really I look at it as 3,5,2

Going to WC next international break and try to set up a team that play 3,4,3 or 4,3,3 depending on fixtures.

Desired front line is: Rooney, Sturridge, Aguero when i do WC. This would mean I would definately have to ditch Baines

Interesting cos I've also been thinking about choosing squads for flexibility. A 3-4-3 / 4-3-3 hybrid is also the main option I've considered. So presumably it's a must to have two attacking fullbacks and four quality mids to make that work. And I guess the need to also price in three worthwhile strikers is why you're losing Baines and taking a cheap striker gamble in Sturridge. Will be pondering this, could be lots of points.

The other aspect of flexibility was that I've noticed some people building impressive subs benches at the cost of the most expensive star. While putting money on the bench seemed wasteful I realize it can be smart, transfers are kept to a minimum because cover is good, and you don't need to adapt to fixtures every week. And transfers are power.

attacking fullbacks are fantasy gold, Bosingwa has been great this year value wise and I am keeping a close eye on Rangal from Swansea (his ICT score is always up there).
Hopefully Sturridge is not a gamble as you put it as AVB seems to rate him and given minutes he will produce.

The issue this season is finding the consistent midfielders who are mid priced. Having 4 mids who play and score each week is the basis of a top season IMO and so far I have been burned by Nzogbia and Yaya. I have recitified this now and have Young and Silva and luckily have had Rooney since GW2 so I'm not completely stuffed.

Transfers are good but having a bench that plays is far more valuable. This is why the Shane Ferguson owners will end up losing if he continues to not play.

I rate Sturridge too, I had him last year when he was in loan (Bolton?) And caught a rich vein of goalscoring. Just hope AWB practices his belief in him, as he has three moneybags strikers breathing down his neck, Torres, Drogba (when recovered) and Lukaku (ish).

Will watch Rangel who caught my eye, but how many assists can a fullback get out of a team that doesn't score much? Sadly the bonus system doesn't seem to reward non-scoring events well.

I generally make a point never to pick a bench player who doesn't play. Hence my bunch of Simpson, N. Dyer and Schwarzer pass this. Only one who hasn't is Senderos, possibly because he's a lot crapper than I thought.

Btw you noticed how this year we have some okayish mids around 6.5, then a huge gap to the good ones at around 9+ even 10+? Headache.

    1) RVP and Brunt -> Adebayor and Mata

RVP...i think due to Aguero being technically better, his game is more suited to european competition than Dzeckos...his strength and height will be more suited to the premier league. I don't think Dzecko is as much a rotation risk as people presume...

But RVP has favourable fixtures? Plus, if I were to trade out RVP, would it be a risk to not have any Arsenal players over the next few weeks?

it would be a risk only if you think they'll start baning in goals.

this favourable fixture thingy doesnt work out for RVP.he had 'favourable fixtures' against swansea and blackburn.....bolton are definitely stronger...hes a good player but not at that price

obviously Mancini has something to prove in europe and thus as we all know the rotation of players will play an integral part in this. The reason for rotation is to preserve your best players...as Aguero is a better player than Dzecko, it stands to reasonable argument that Aguero will be rested for europe more than dzecko...

interesting stuff about how rotation works. I guess you can summarize it as 'saving your most important players for the most important games'. The importance of a game depends on your competition progress and the opposition. It could be a CL match, could be a PL match, just depends on context. So, Citeh have racked up lots of PL points already. But they dropped 2 points against Napoli, poss weakest in CL group. Bayern are also way better than Everton. There are 33 PL games to go but only 5 CL matches to go. Hence the CL match is far more important and I reckon the more important player Aguero will play less against Everton.

Mancini looked more bothered about the two points dropped this weekend than last week
IMO, he most likely wants both titles just as much, the only problem being is that he's now given ground in the PL.
Long term it comes down to who are the better players & for me, the first 3 games (& that's all it is) of this season aren't enough to convince me dzeko is anything close to aguero or, for that matter, tevez. You're better off dropping him and watching those who scrambled round after his 4 goals lose points for the next 3 gws.

Ade scored 2 against Liverpool who had 9 men on the field at the time.
Why on earth would Dzeko not play? He missed 1 game due to playing 2 internationals mid week. Aguero is the more likely not to play this week, no way is it worth a 4 point hit IMO

Anyone got any funny stories about their mini-leagues? The guy who started (pressed the button) for one of my mini leagues has had a little tantrum, and decided to close the forum. Apparently, the comments were getting "too negative" for his ultra sensitive little ears. The comments were vitirol such as, "You're team's going down!", "You've used your WC already? I think you're panicking!", "4 transfers already? I bet you're just trying to copy my team again..." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! What makes people so pathetic? Also, he deleted any threads he didn't like, and deleted any messages that he felt were critical of his team...

Side-note, this all came after he just scored 23 points last week...HAHAHAHAHAHA! Anyone else got any experience with silly little people like this?

Think I'm happy with my wildcard team:

    Vorm - Krul
    Bosingwa - Kompany - Simpson - N.Taylor - Gabbidon
    Silva - Mata - Barton - Larsson - Dyer
    Rooney - Aguero - Adebayor

Pretty uncontroversial for the most part... the questions I have are:
    (1) Have I got the right three 4m defenders?
    (2) Have I got the right midprice midfielders in Barton and Larsson? Looks like chasing last week's points, I know, but I think they're the best prospects. I have 0.2m in the bank with that team so that's 12.5m to spend on those two spots.

    Any opinions much appreciated.

I'm not convinced over Larsson and would prefer SWP to Barton.

I'm all for the Krul/Vorm combo but to have a Newcastle and Swansea defender as well is going overboard. Having said that I don't see any better 4m options and since Bos and Kompany will take 2/3 spots most weeks you should be ok rotating your 3 cheapies

Murphy is a good one to put on my shortlist though. Although he somehow went the whole of last season without scoring. Doing better already this time out though. Cheers for the suggestion.

as crazy as this sounds, you might downgrade larson to moses and use the cash to switch adebeyor for suarez for this week and then switch back to ade week after if you want
If yr wildcarding you have the luxury to maximise yr next week's score with suarez
you would probably play 4 of yr defenders this week anyway if you wanted to bench moses

Plus Taylor has his job for what? A few weeks max, De laet is useless (a rotation risk defender playing for Norwich?)
N.Taylor is a good pick and Ferdinand is alright too. I wouldnt by R.Taylor for 4.5 as he wont be there long

I like it, probably because my team is very similar 😀
Bosingwa - Enrique - Jones at the back is a good differential. They are cheap, and more likely of attacking stats/clean sheets than the usual cheapies.
Suarez is my captain this week too, and i dont see who from your starting 11 has a reason to be benched.

Any one has a clue about Ben Arfa, he is coming back from injury. His form last year was amazing - i wonder how would he fit into the Team this year. Will he be playing in the hole just behind Best? more importantly, would he even start? With 3 home games in the next 4, he can be the key to bring me back into the top spot on my mini League.

you are right, maybe amazing is too much for him. i would just say that he got potential to score big. How's that? But you get the concept that he can be a bargain who brings you a lot of pts in these 4 weeks.

He played 4 games. However he is definately on my radar, at 5.4 a potential bargain, he will be in the supporting striker role. He will play Nottingham mid week in Carling Cup so have a look at him there

    Vorm, Krul

    Tierney, Taylor, Simpson, Gabbidon, Brown

    Mata, Silva, Arteta, Nani, Young

    Aguero, Rooney, RVP.

Cheap and nasty in the right places.

Don't bother with the rugby until the knockout stages. That's when NZ choke.

Rugby - top effort from your Welsh lads. They've earned a lot of respect over here. Your captain has been very impressive -on and off the field. Can't believe the age of this Welsh team - they're all under 22! 142 tackles v Samoa. Pity you had injuries. I think Ryan Jones is coming back though?

I think the Saffas have improved a lot since the Tri Nations. Smit's best days are behind him and Matfield is crocked which isn't a bad thing.

Hard to see how Oz/SA can play each other in the QFs and win; then ABs in semis and then the best NH team in the final. Tough times.
