With this midweek devoid of the chance to catch-up on Champions League action, we’re taking the opportunity to roll out a new feature and shine some extra light in the direction of a side our European Fantasy Managers will be keeping a close eye on.

As mentioned earlier, conveniently facing each other on Sunday night, AC Milan and Napoli are two sides that people may want to invest in, so we get the microscope out for the very first time with a bumper edition as we take a look at both sides from this fixture….

The Tactics

Each side here play formations which we’ve already seen Gian Pieri Gasperini try, and not particularly succeed with, so far in his time as manager of Inter Milan. This is as much down to the fact that, at Inter, there seems to a manager trying to squeeze his square-shaped players into round holes, while at Milan and Napoli these are formations borne out of the talents available.

As demonstrated above with the average position map from Sunday evening, and in this even better representation from their Champions League game at Barcelona, Massimo Allegri favours lining up his Milan side in a 4-3-1-2 formation.

The Rossoneri are very much formed on solid foundations with a back four -currently Ignazio Abate (20), Thiago Silva (33), Alessandro Nesta (13) and one of a host of left-backs- that is then screened by three midfielders who know how to get stuck in. Mark Van Bommel (4) is perhaps the antithesis of this. Even the “Trequartista” role is often filled by known grafters such as Kevin-Prince Boateng (27) and Clarence (10) Seedorf rather than perhaps more luxury playmakers in the same vein as, say, Wesley Sneijder or Mesut Özil

Zlatan Ibrahimovic would normally be at the apex of this formation with all roads inevitably leading to supply the big Swede with as much end product as they can. Whether it be the full backs using the space in front of them to get forward or the more creative of the support such as Alberto Aquilani and Antonio Cassano (99) looking to feed balls through. However, with Ibrahimovic currently injured on the sidelines, the central supply will be more important and worked perfectly in Milan’s Champions League tie when Seedorf sent Alexandre Pato (7) though on goal after just 24 seconds.

Napoli, meanwhile, are frequent backers of the 3-4-2-1 formation as, once again, shown in the diagram above and in this representation from their recent 1-1 draw away at Manchester City in the Champions League last week.

The Azzurri are one of few Italian outfits who will offer genuine width with thanks to Christian Maggio (11) and one of ex-Liverpool full-back Andrea Dossena (8) -or Juan Camilo Zúñiga (18)- filling the role admirably. This leaves Gokhan Inler (88) and Walter Gargano (23) to take care of the industrial issues in the middle of the park.

A functioning back three means that, in defensive play, these two nominal wide midfielders will pull back to form a blanket back five and push on when needed, knowing there are plenty of hands left behind to steady the ship.

The front three all have fairly well delineated roles that separate one from another. Marek Hamsik (17) is the most retreated and central of that trio linking the midfield to the attack, Ezequiel Lavezzi (22) has a more “free” role to pressure defences and try and get behind the lines while Edinson Cavani (7) is positioned as a fairly standard- if much more mobile than his size might suggest- leading central forward. His 26 goals last term for Napoli was very reminiscent of Wayne Rooney’s most prolific 2009/10 season.

Key Moments

The game burst into life after ten minutes when Alberto Aquilani (employed behind the strikers as the most attacking midfielder) opened the scoring with a marvelous diving header from a Antonio Cassano cross. A couple of minutes later Napoli levelled- Christan Maggo headed a well-worked free-kick to Edinson Cavani and he thundered a strike through the goalkeeper’s legs.

Twenty minutes later Walter Gargano stole the ball from Pato and, in a blink and you’ll miss it counter attack, ran the full length of the field to tee up Cavani to stroke home from 12 yards out. Five minutes into the second half Cavani completed his hat-trick; Christian Maggio’s cross rebounded off of Alessandro Nesta and Cavani, reacting quickly, thundered home a volley to establish his side’s superiority. For all of Milan’s efforts they never really troubled the Napoli goalkeeper from this point on; Alexandre Pato in particular disappointed.

Both clubs will have two more league games (Milan at home to Udinese and Cesena, Napoli visit Chievo and host Fiorentina) before we get to arranging our Uefa Fantasy Champions League sides again but, right now, one club has easier fixtures coming off an iffy performance while the other side are in stark contrast.

The Ones To Watch

Milan’s next three fixtures see them face off against BATE of Bulgaria at home and away as well as welcoming Viktoria Plzeň to the San Siro next Tuesday. Picking some Milanese options would seem a prudent move, so here’s some who may turn your fancy…

Christian Abbiati: 6.0 for a goalkeeper at one of Italy’s top and leanest sides with a double header at home against favourable opposition upcoming.

Thiago Silva: He’s already scored himself a goal, picked up some recovered ball bonus and has the same advantage as the man above him.

Alberto Aquilani: An old friend. With Andrea Pirlo now departed he’ll be relied upon to provide a creative spark in the heart of the Milan midfield.

Antonio Cassano: A wildcard option, but a low price (7.5) may compensate for this. Until Ibrahimovic and Robinho return from injury he and fellow striker Alexandre Pato should be sure of their place too.

Napoli got a big result in Matchday One when they came back from the Etihad stadium with a point. A good start to their inaugural Champions League campaign – in the “Group of Death” no less.

Clean sheets will be hard to come by with opposition such as Bayern, Man City and Villarreal, but with three home ties in their next four at the Stadio San Paolo, we look to their attackers as a way to gaining the Fantasy points…

Marek Hamsik: The Slovakian midfielder is not someone to hide in the crowd – this may be as much down to his hairstyle as anything else. The more central of Napoli’s two support forwards should provide performances on par with his ceiling scraping haircut.

Edinson Cavani: An imposing brute of a striker the Uruguayan has really begun to make his name on numerous stages (World Cup, Serie A and Copa America) in the last year or so. Earn his 9.5 crust against his upcoming opponents and it’ll be a long while before he is forgotten.

Ezequiel Lavezzi: A cheaper (7.0) option into the strike-force. Less likely to get that gut-busting score but should return dividends comparable to his price, that’s for sure.

I just dont get the punters persisting with Van Persie - he has and is not showing any sign of form, neither are his team - if its a fixture issue, well there is better value at a fraction of the cost with equally good fixtures elsewhere - if its the preverbial "Its only a matter of time til he comes good" then you could level the same towards Torres and see NO-One punting him!!! So whats with the RvP loving??

1 goal and 1 assist in the last 3 games isn't bad historically. Arse's attack is OK especially now Frimp & Ger are back from suspension,it's their defence that is rubbish.

Just the love from the last season. Yes, we are still holding on and wishful thinking that he will come good.

I'm I the only person sticking with Baines?!

Can't see many clean sheets in the upcoming weeks but then again, thats not what your paying 8 million for and Everton always step up against the better teams.

Again with the Baines - there is so much better delivering value out there!! I agree with the "out of sorts" comment - they do look at 6s and 7s at the moment - Cahill needs to step up.

Would you make any transfers to the below this week? I have 1 free and a wildcard but am thinking the boring option of saving it is probably best...

    Nani(sto), Silva(EVE), Sessegnon(nor), Moses(tot)

I like it Jaf. I'm wildcarding at the moment and I can't bring myself to go with such a cheap defence, but I've played around with that exact line-up today myself.

One thing you might not have considered is getting Lopez from Wigan instead of Gabbidon... perhaps slightly counter-intuitive considering recent results but Wigan's fixtures run better than QPR's in the medium-to-long term.

See you going for Tierney above - noticed that he's been putting a few balls in the box of late and is the only Norwich defender to play every game. Possibly a worthy punt.

Yeah definitely looking at Tierney, decentish home fixtures coming up too. And cheap!

RE Moses, just watched a couple of vids of his "best bits" vs Norwich and QPR... his "shots on target" didn't look that impressive to me, didn't really trouble the keepers a huge amount. But of course if I get rid this week he'll obviously get a goal...

I know what you mean, goes against every fibre of my being to get a Wigan defender.

Because of lost value early on I can't quite follow your template to get Nani unless (a) two of Petrov, R.Taylor or P.Jones go up by another 0.1 before saturday, or (b) I downgrade Adebayor to Sturridge

...otherwise the bulk of our teams are pretty similar. Vorm-Krul for the keepers and Rooney-Aguero--Adebayor-Silva-Mata for the (hopefully) devastating attack.

            Chaos?

I took the WC out on Monday morning after a 31pts GW score,a 50+ deficit in my mini league and losing badly in h2h to someone that has Drogba(c) since gw 1 and has never changed his/her side since the start. Not even using the free WC in gw 2.

Listening to others in a similar position def pushed me "over the edged" though.

So basically I'm not allowed to listen to other ideas or change mine due to unforseen circumstances to try and better my ranking.

    Given (Vorm)
    Enrique Bosingwa Kompany Simpson (Baines)
    Nani SWP Walcott Brunt (Moses)
    Dzeko Suarez(c) (A.Johnson)

1 free, 1.9m in bank. Thinking Baines-5.0 or less (and who) to free up cash to get Rooney in future. Hoping Walcott will start (will he??)

Oh really??? I realise that and said that. But the only way to get him in this week is to take an 8 point hit or wc. So will have to go Baines down, then someone else down and roon in for a 4 or something like that.

Oh nice.. Yeah Baines for Brown looking likely for me too. Like the other one but I assume you have Rooney which I don't so I need to get him otherwise I'd likely do that 2. Yeah Walcott has easy fixture so if he starts he should do well. Have contemplated walcott-mata or Silva but if theo starts he could burn me so idk bout him. But hoping he starts!! Well I've learned a lot this season. Mainly not to listen to advice and go with gut instinct!

Thanks to this site I've had the likes of: Moses & Sessegnon, I've brought in Walcott as he was "essential" with Arsenal's run of fixtures. And I've kept Suarez, despite the fact he has as much scoring ability as Bendtner of late and for some reason people convinced me to have Enrique - despite even myself saying Liverpool were crap at the back and Enrique has no end product to his runs (thanks in particular to the guy who insisted Steve Clark would sort Liverpool's defence).

Luckily I didn't follow every bit of advice and never bought in Torres at least.

However going with gut instinct I brought in Dzeko in week two, SWP a couple of weeks back, Bosingwa, Petrov and Silva from the start and overall was pretty happy with my team. Unfortunately I'm currently on 275 points while me league leader, a girlfriend of a mate and "Man U fan" (as every non-football-fan is) is currently sitting on 373 points and 899th in the World.

In future I'd suggest not jumping on any unproven bandwagon's mentioned here and go with what you think - not others telling you someone will "come good".

    Yours,

    Depressed Jim. 😉

Will Walcott start and why didn't he last week??
Will Dzeko and Brunt start?? (Thinking these are yes)

My thoughts on Man City forward lineup, that Mancini preferred Dzeko for teams that defend deep (Spurs, Fulham, Napoli) and Tevez for teams that defended fairly open (Wigan).

I know its a small sample of data, but my suspicions that Dzeko will start against Everton and Tevez for Bayern in UCL.

      Just my two cents.

Man U will score at least three past Stokes "tough" defence at home, Rooney, Nani and a late sub performance from Welbeck being the scorers. Liverpool and Arsenal will continue to suck. QPR will beat Villa, though SWP will run the game and score no BP. Chelsea will break Swansea with Torres on the bench, Lampard getting a pen and Sturridge keeping his bottle in front of goal this time. 🙂

I'm frustrated by idiot football managers this season - Arsene, is it time to go mate? You seem to have become senile. Mancini, you know what - when you're 2-0 up at Fulham, you DON'T have to switch to being defensive - you see that Ferguson fellow, he instils a killer instinct in his largely average team, go for the win, don't sit back and cruise when you think you're safe. Dalgleish - never rated as a manager and he's thankfully proving me right, why I put Pool players in my team I'll never know.

Just frustration - Now 98 points behind my league leader despite averaging a fairly decent 55 points a week. I can see no way to gain on her with Young, Silva, Nani, Rooney, Aguero, Bonsingwa, Vorm, Dyer etc in her team, I have lesser versions of the same players (Dzeko, Anderson for example) with useless toilets from Arsenal and Liverpool thrown in to kick me while I'm down! 😀

    First post here.

I think I have a decent team. My confusion is if I have to stick with Suarez after GW6 or not. Suarez, Adebayor and Agbonlahor have juicy fixtures and I've been thinking if I should downgrade him to improve my midfield which only Silva being a high priced player.

Well, most people have either Nasri or Silva. You obviously have Nasri, and I don't think you should try to fit Silva into your side. The most obvious choice would be Nasri-> Silva, but that would be too much of a sideways transfer.

But Nasri does not have the ability of Silva. If you watch them play, there is a gulf in class. Nasri had 1 good game. Last season he got 2 assists. Silva looks very good and creative and will continue to be the whole season, nasri i'm not so sure. Silva's price keeps rising and people with Silva keep getting large points, i'm getting let behind!!

Well everyones got an opinion of course - for me, your midfield looks weak not withstanding Silva - and bent nd Fletch hmm better value out there with much better returns - if that has been your team since gw1 Im guessing you have accumulated about 180 - 200 points.

      Adebayor vs 11 men = 153 min = 1 goal
      Adebayor vs 9 men = 27 min = 2 goals

Suarez will score soon, I'm astonished he's gone this long to be honest, he's a class act!

Of course he will. I just sold him.

That 1.5 m difference is the elephant in the room that everyone keeps ignoring though.

Do i need Rooney for this week (forget the fact that i've made a complete show without him so far)

    Given Kenny
Bosingwa Warnock Woodgate Jose S Taylor
    Silva Young SWP Jarvis Dyer
    Ade Dzeko RVP

I have two free goes, but might just look to ditch Jarvis but do i need Chelsea coverage?

thinking of giving RVP one last shot as captain then Wayne in for next week maybe.

Thats the WC button pressed this week , thoughts about Man City rotation got silva atm ( think thats enough ) and front 3 of Rooney Ade (form) and Agbonlahor (form and fixtures) any thoughts well appriciated gentleman and ladies 😀

Looks ok to me. I used my wildcard last week and got in Ade as part of the shuffle. Just a shame about the other retards I have creeping around...Charlie Adam getting himself sent off didnt help! Gabby Ag is a good shout. I stuck S. Petrov in midfield just because of price and fixtures but now i'm not sure if he is even fit....the joy of fantasy football, hey?!!

What are the thoughts with Brunt? Supposed to be WBA's main guy and set piece hog but has been hugely disappointing so far.. Trash or give him a couple more weeks due to WBA decent fixtures?

Already made transfer so its gonna be a 4 pointers.

    Thanks.

I am in the same dilemma. I think i would keep him as he s the main man for west brom and shipping out Anderson.

I'm not a fan but probably not worth the 4 point hit. See how he does at the weekend and then see what you can do if he doesnt perform.

Hi Mark, I brought in Ade from GW4 since I got a good feeling about him and reading some of your suggestions so cheers for that.

You seems big on Nani and I really wanna bring him in for the Norwich game, think he's going to go rampant

        Currently have:

        Given, Vorm
        Simpson, Bosingwa, Shawcross, Naylor, DL
        Silva, Ramsey, Mata, Dyer, Brunt
        Rooney, RVP, Ade

Would you reckon the most logical way is to drop RVP? Though I have no problem sticking with him despite Arsenal being so below average. Thanks.

I think Suarez is the best bet in replacing RVP...maybe Dzeko as well

Not a fan of Brunt/Ramsey - would trade one of them for Barton and then try upgrading the other too Nani using the funds from selling RVP

      sorry, something weird happened there.
Currently have nani, silva, n'zob, jarvis, Long, rooney, dzeko and really lost faith in N'zogbia. Which option is better:
      a) nani, silva, arteta, sinclair
      Long, rooney, dzeko and -4points
      or
      a) nani, silva, n'zob, jarvis
Long, rooney, dzeko and lose no points

    Please rmt

    Giv vorm
    Komp bos enrique simp deleat
    Young silva swp brunt dyr
    Roo suarez ade

100 points behind rival. All due to him captaining roo or aguaro during hattricks. Bloody annoying

Deleat for Gabbidon, or Boyota if you feel that bolton will improve.
Personally got rid of Brunt too. But overall is a good team.

Isn't gabbidon injured and boyata a rotation risk? Brunt isn't performing but I feel he deserves a couple more games worth of evidence before I get rid. You have a good team hold strong, it'll turn round eventually!!
