With this midweek devoid of the chance to catch-up on Champions League action, we’re taking the opportunity to roll out a new feature and shine some extra light in the direction of a side our European Fantasy Managers will be keeping a close eye on.

As mentioned earlier, conveniently facing each other on Sunday night, AC Milan and Napoli are two sides that people may want to invest in, so we get the microscope out for the very first time with a bumper edition as we take a look at both sides from this fixture….

The Tactics

Each side here play formations which we’ve already seen Gian Pieri Gasperini try, and not particularly succeed with, so far in his time as manager of Inter Milan. This is as much down to the fact that, at Inter, there seems to a manager trying to squeeze his square-shaped players into round holes, while at Milan and Napoli these are formations borne out of the talents available.

As demonstrated above with the average position map from Sunday evening, and in this even better representation from their Champions League game at Barcelona, Massimo Allegri favours lining up his Milan side in a 4-3-1-2 formation.

The Rossoneri are very much formed on solid foundations with a back four -currently Ignazio Abate (20), Thiago Silva (33), Alessandro Nesta (13) and one of a host of left-backs- that is then screened by three midfielders who know how to get stuck in. Mark Van Bommel (4) is perhaps the antithesis of this. Even the “Trequartista” role is often filled by known grafters such as Kevin-Prince Boateng (27) and Clarence (10) Seedorf rather than perhaps more luxury playmakers in the same vein as, say, Wesley Sneijder or Mesut Özil

Zlatan Ibrahimovic would normally be at the apex of this formation with all roads inevitably leading to supply the big Swede with as much end product as they can. Whether it be the full backs using the space in front of them to get forward or the more creative of the support such as Alberto Aquilani and Antonio Cassano (99) looking to feed balls through. However, with Ibrahimovic currently injured on the sidelines, the central supply will be more important and worked perfectly in Milan’s Champions League tie when Seedorf sent Alexandre Pato (7) though on goal after just 24 seconds.

Napoli, meanwhile, are frequent backers of the 3-4-2-1 formation as, once again, shown in the diagram above and in this representation from their recent 1-1 draw away at Manchester City in the Champions League last week.

The Azzurri are one of few Italian outfits who will offer genuine width with thanks to Christian Maggio (11) and one of ex-Liverpool full-back Andrea Dossena (8) -or Juan Camilo Zúñiga (18)- filling the role admirably. This leaves Gokhan Inler (88) and Walter Gargano (23) to take care of the industrial issues in the middle of the park.

A functioning back three means that, in defensive play, these two nominal wide midfielders will pull back to form a blanket back five and push on when needed, knowing there are plenty of hands left behind to steady the ship.

The front three all have fairly well delineated roles that separate one from another. Marek Hamsik (17) is the most retreated and central of that trio linking the midfield to the attack, Ezequiel Lavezzi (22) has a more “free” role to pressure defences and try and get behind the lines while Edinson Cavani (7) is positioned as a fairly standard- if much more mobile than his size might suggest- leading central forward. His 26 goals last term for Napoli was very reminiscent of Wayne Rooney’s most prolific 2009/10 season.

Key Moments

The game burst into life after ten minutes when Alberto Aquilani (employed behind the strikers as the most attacking midfielder) opened the scoring with a marvelous diving header from a Antonio Cassano cross. A couple of minutes later Napoli levelled- Christan Maggo headed a well-worked free-kick to Edinson Cavani and he thundered a strike through the goalkeeper’s legs.

Twenty minutes later Walter Gargano stole the ball from Pato and, in a blink and you’ll miss it counter attack, ran the full length of the field to tee up Cavani to stroke home from 12 yards out. Five minutes into the second half Cavani completed his hat-trick; Christian Maggio’s cross rebounded off of Alessandro Nesta and Cavani, reacting quickly, thundered home a volley to establish his side’s superiority. For all of Milan’s efforts they never really troubled the Napoli goalkeeper from this point on; Alexandre Pato in particular disappointed.

Both clubs will have two more league games (Milan at home to Udinese and Cesena, Napoli visit Chievo and host Fiorentina) before we get to arranging our Uefa Fantasy Champions League sides again but, right now, one club has easier fixtures coming off an iffy performance while the other side are in stark contrast.

The Ones To Watch

Milan’s next three fixtures see them face off against BATE of Bulgaria at home and away as well as welcoming Viktoria Plzeň to the San Siro next Tuesday. Picking some Milanese options would seem a prudent move, so here’s some who may turn your fancy…

Christian Abbiati: 6.0 for a goalkeeper at one of Italy’s top and leanest sides with a double header at home against favourable opposition upcoming.

Thiago Silva: He’s already scored himself a goal, picked up some recovered ball bonus and has the same advantage as the man above him.

Alberto Aquilani: An old friend. With Andrea Pirlo now departed he’ll be relied upon to provide a creative spark in the heart of the Milan midfield.

Antonio Cassano: A wildcard option, but a low price (7.5) may compensate for this. Until Ibrahimovic and Robinho return from injury he and fellow striker Alexandre Pato should be sure of their place too.

Napoli got a big result in Matchday One when they came back from the Etihad stadium with a point. A good start to their inaugural Champions League campaign – in the “Group of Death” no less.

Clean sheets will be hard to come by with opposition such as Bayern, Man City and Villarreal, but with three home ties in their next four at the Stadio San Paolo, we look to their attackers as a way to gaining the Fantasy points…

Marek Hamsik: The Slovakian midfielder is not someone to hide in the crowd – this may be as much down to his hairstyle as anything else. The more central of Napoli’s two support forwards should provide performances on par with his ceiling scraping haircut.

Edinson Cavani: An imposing brute of a striker the Uruguayan has really begun to make his name on numerous stages (World Cup, Serie A and Copa America) in the last year or so. Earn his 9.5 crust against his upcoming opponents and it’ll be a long while before he is forgotten.

Ezequiel Lavezzi: A cheaper (7.0) option into the strike-force. Less likely to get that gut-busting score but should return dividends comparable to his price, that’s for sure.

    Here's one I made earlier, guys -

    Vorm, Ruddy

Assou-Ekotto, Gabbidon, Taylor (Swa), Brown, Simpson.

Nani, Mata, Silva, Ben Arfa, Dyer.

Potato, The Fans Love Me, Kun.

0.2 in the bank. I wasn't planning on doing the WC just yet but that looks good enough to eat.

Looks good, a lot of people seem to be banking on strikers to keep up their form through out the whole season and constantly be scoring every game

If the top level teams start defending better and picking up clean sheets etc it is going to be difficult for these players who have gone for a 4.5 average defenders to get them in without wildcards.

It's certainly possible that the top teams will start defending better as they integrate new players but what I saw in the games I watched last weekend was pitiful. Arsenal, Blackburn, Wolves, Liverpool, Bolton, WBA and Stoke were abysmal in defence. Who's going to pay 6.5m for an Arsenal defender when they play like a bunch of drunks in a snowstorm?
I'm sure things will balance themselves out over the course of the season but at the moment the cheapies are on top. Also this new Bonus Point system seems to favour goalscorers instead of the influential midfielder types.

I was there. He was their best player by far. Looked dangerous every time he got the ball. Definitely one to consider.

On another note, first time I've seen Ferguson play. No wonder he's the lowest priced player in the FPL. F*cking awful, clearly doesn't have a clue what he's doing.

From the scout notes yesterday, Pardew re: Ben Arfa

If he grabs that, he’s got a good chance of getting into this team. He will have that number 10 role that Demba Ba did on Saturday and did very, very well for us, so that’s where he’s got good competition.

2 things you need in your midfield - nailed on starters and representation from each of Chels, Citeh (not Nasri) and Man UU. I would be looking at outing Bale, Anderson and Brunt. Take a look at Mata, Silva, Young/Nani - there is other good value around at QPR and Swansea as well.

To get the balance back in your midfield, you may need to WC.

That's a reason as good as any. I always admit that it's the most irrational reason I use for decision making (and probably another reason why I won't finish in the very highest bracket anytime soon), that I buy players in matches I know I'll watch.

My armband is on Adebayor at the moment, but there as well I can see Wigan being better opposition than expected. Spurs have a way of dissapointing when everyone expects them to do well.

In some ways I think a major overhaul of the squad for a big hit is better compared to taking smaller hits each and every week.

I've done it myself some times and it's worked. I'd seriously consider using the wildcard though, you won't want to make this many transfers many times again anyway.

    Morning folks,

wildcard in play and struggling with a couple of decisions in midfield. Have Rooney and Aguero up front and Bosingwa at the back as my current Utd, City and Chelsea coverage.

With that in mind and financial constraints, who would you go for in midfield from these options:

    a. Nani & Mata
    b. Silva & Mata
    c. Nani & Nasri

I guess it kind of boils down to which you prefer between Nani and Silva really? Any opinions greatly appreciated.

Well he got 3 assists in his first game and then came on for another in his second okay so he drew a blank in his third but I think it's unfair to call him out of form.

Cheers fellas. I can downgrade Walcott to Arteta in order to upgrade Nasri to Silva or Mata.... But I've had such a bad start I'm thinking changing my team to be the same as everyone else is not gonna get me anywhere so I might just stick to my guns with my 'differentials' and hope to gain some points????!!

No problems from what I've seen, he's been playing well, just hasn't brought in points the last couple of games. At the end of the day Silva is a better choice, but I don't think Nasri is far away from some good scores.

People just lose interest in the other expensive players quicky when certain big money players rake in the huge scores. That's Nasri's problem.

Anyone think theres a chance in a weeks time that Ferguson might give Berbatov the game against Norwich? With Hernandez and Welbeck not fully fit / recovering from injury, I can just see it as the sort of game where Berb might get a run. I've got a big lead to haul in, and am starting to look at it as a potential one week punt (I can't afford Rooney).

Massive massive gamble. If you can't afford Rooney the best bet would be to buy Young or Nani, who is still only 9.9.

I've still not seen any team with both Young and Nani, that would be bold and good.

nah, 74 mins probably, it is a gamble, but with the new fresh looking defoe/adebayor partnership I think he could be in for more assists this season playing a bit deeper, plus his normal set pieces. His threat stats so far this season is very impressive

Hi guys. I have two free transfers this week. Squad (and team)is currently:

    given (vorm)
bosingwa kompany raylor (hall, de laet)
    young silva o'hara moses (dyer)
    rooney RVP dzeko

I've no cash left. I don't see the need for both transfers, but hall (might not play), de laet (same, and is rubbish) and o'hara (done nothing to date and up against liverpool) seem the priorities.

Thoughts? Hall to Gabbidon? O'hara to Cabaye/Barton/Ben Arfa?

Looking for some advice on this, my current team is:

    Schwarzer/Vorm
    Bosingwa/Kompany/Baines/Ward/de Laet
    Brunt/Dyer/Silva/Young/Petrov
    Aguero/Adebayor/Sturridge

I did my sub this week already (RvP -> Aguero - everyone in my mini-leagues has Rooney so this is enough of a differential)

My issue: Baines has a horrible run of fixtures to GW10/11 so I'm looking to off load him. Also United have a great one next GW. So I'm thinking of Baines -> Nani next week (I have 2.0m in the bank).

If I don't do the move this week, I'd be too tempted to keep Baines for his home game. I also want to make a move for VdV for Young/Nani in GW8.

Any advice, should I just hold on to Baines, play de Laet, and switch Brunt to Cabaye/Barton/SWP next week?

I'm rereading my piece, its poorly stated.

I have Baines who has tough fixtures. I am thinking of downgrading him to afford Brunt -> Nani next week. Is it worth taking the hit (this week to do that).

There is no point taking the hit next week as Baines has a home game against a faltering Liverpool so I could keep him for that.

Its looking like even with good fixtures ahead alot of people are giving up on Arsenal and Liverpool based on their poor form of late. Im tempted to do the same, but I think Liverpool are more likely of the turn things round at home to Wolves. Also Arsenal still have the ability to score goals. So to cut a long story short, its probably best to hold on right? I currently have Suarez and Walcott, Walcott appears to be a under threat of roatation, so want to change him for Nani/Young, shall I hang on to next week to do this?
I also need to out Baines, and am thinking Jones or Enrique?
Sorry to waffle on but my team is potentialy going to have three city and utd players good idea? (Kompany,Silva,Dzeko,Jones,Nani,Rooney)

Another move I was contemplating was Baines -> Cole (even though its a double up on Chelsea defence). You then have a much more like-for-like swap at the back (downgrading Baines means making two transfers to get him back).

I think the smart move is to keep Suarez and Walcott for this gameweek if you have them and then evaluate again.

I'm no big fan of Baines for the upcoming weeks.

Overloading on players from Manchester is probably a great thing. I'm on 3 City and looking to add a second and possibly third United player inside 5 weeks too.

Enriques fixtures are better but I think Jones will still score better, and am pretty confident he is going to play enough games to warrant the transfer. Im also swayed by the guy in my mini league above me has Enrique and Reina. Obviously a cheaper option like Brown or even Bramble if your need the funds elsewhere.

Your points are very valid. Arsenal have decent fixtures and some coverage i.e. Arteta is a good shout. RVP is a tricky one because there are other great in form strikers.

Liverpool have gone off the boil but could rip it up at the weekend.

Man Utd and Man City are IMO somewhat fixture proof, but 3 from each for me is just too much. i.e. having Enrique and Boswinga at least covers you if you dont have Young instead of Mata or Aguero instead of Saurez.

This weekend could be harmful as they have great fixtures but big picture I'd prefer Young to Mata.

I am tempted by Mata too, but am certain Young is a better pick long term. Not sure about Arteta once or if he takes all spot kick duties off RVP then yes, or even is in a more attacking position, then hes a good shout. Love it if Suarez tears Wolves to pieces this weekend and Adebayor draws a blank, but Im not confident of that happening. I will be holding the knee firmly down this week.

          Ward is away against Liverpool
Woodgate is at home but against United
If Santon plays it will be home vs. Blackburn

I don't know, I'd probably play him and hope he starts, with Ward as first sub.

Who's your other keeper? I see Wolves conceding to Liverpool...

Santon is injured right? Only play Ward if you aren't playing Hennessey.

I would probably bench Anderson too. Rest of team looks good.

Got skipper choice down to 3! Adebayor, Sturridge or a HUGE punt on Walcott! Team is

    krul
    bosingwa,shawcross,baines
    young,silva,dyer,walcott
    rooney,sturridge,adebayor
    (vorm,ward,delaet,ferguson)

Its on adebayor at the min but surely IF theo starts he could have a huge game up against robinson. Its a big risk but could pay off. Am i completely mad?

Adebayor from those 3. Can't see how you're ignoring Rooney though.

Argh. This doesnt make my decision any easier. I'm contemplating dumping Walcott for Mata because I've got RVP. Talk of people captaining him just won't help me pull the trigger.

At the moment anyone is better then a Wolves player(cue Ohara goals, boners and assist)

No seriously - i'm also tempted with arfa at 5.4m, but surely he won't start?

If you are willing to spend 6m on ohara, then rather go for Cabaye or Barton.

Maybe Cabaye and then downgrade once BArfa is up and running? Will leave a handy 0.6m in the kitty.

Cabaye was poor in the game I wacthed him though. It was away from home vs QPR.

u reckon cabaye??? i do rate him 2 and not many have him so i am considering it. They have great fixtures and i think hes on pens but cos ive had such a bad start im unsure.
I have 7.5 for a forward 2 who u rkn is best bet. im thinking bendtner maybe!

Cabaye impressed much against villa last weekend, his stats from the first games this season looks good, you can understand why they let nolan go, I brought him in this week for nzogbia, low ownership, good differential, backed up by a nice fixturelist

Ok, thanks for the input. I'm on WC and gave nzoggers the handshake as well.

Bloody players like Nzoggers & Walcott. Never have them when they go on a goal scoring spree.
