Ahead of the midweek Carling Cup ties, the paper talk is mainly on returns from injury. Hatem Ben Arfa and Owen Hargreaves look set for their first starts of the campaign, as is Bolton’s Stuart Holden. Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez give Sir Alex a welcome boost, while Kenny Dalglish is still uncertain over Steven Gerrard’s imminent return to action. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Alan Pardew intends to given Hatim Ben Arfa his first start of the season this evening. Newcastle square up to Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup and Ben Arfa is set to feature in just his fifth senior game since moving to Tyneside last season. Pardew was more than a little complimentary of the Frenchman and admitted he envisages playing him as a forward, when Ben Arfa is good and ready:

He will bring a creative force to the team that is different to what we have. He is probably different to a lot of players in the Premier League. He’s elusive on the ball. What’s important for him is to make sure he grabs the work-rate that we have got in the team.

If he grabs that, he’s got a good chance of getting into this team. He will have that number 10 role that Demba Ba did on Saturday and did very, very well for us, so that’s where he’s got good competition.

Bobby Zamora has admitted he’s happy with Martin Jol’s decision to limit his game time of late. The Fulham forward has grabbed two goals in his last two games since returning from stiffness in an ankle joint and Jol has been resting him from European competition in order to ensure his availability for Premier League action:

Obviously, I want to play. The European nights are nice but, at the minute, we want to get points in the Premier League. In terms of my ankle, I’d rather rest to be honest.

It’s been reported Javier Hernandez has escaped with nothing more than a bruised shin following Ashley Cole’s horror tackle at Old Trafford on Sunday. After Man United ran scans on the Mexican, his agent, Eduardo Hernandez, revealed the good news and reckons his client should even return to training in the next day or so:

Nothing, it’s just a bump, nothing more. It looked like (his absence) was longer, they were looking for a fracture, that’s why they ran those tests on him. I expect him to be training without incident on Wednesday.

Danny Welbeck has given Sir Alex Ferguson more good news on the injury front. Having deputised for Hernandez at the start of the season, Welbeck succumbed to a hamstring strain after a superb first few games but is already back training and pushing for a place in the first team ahead of United’s Carling Cup visit to Leeds tomorrow:

I’m feeling good. I don’t know the squad yet for Leeds but, if I’m called upon, I’m always prepared to be there as I feel ready. I wouldn’t be training if I wasn’t.

Owen Hargreaves looks set to feature for Man City in the Carling Cup clash with Birmingham tomorrow night. Roberto Mancini will make the decision after training today but the likelihood is that the former Man United midfielder will pull on a City shirt for the first time at the Etihad Stadium showdown with the holders, after impressing the Italian in recent training sessions.

Stuart Holden should make his first-team return for Bolton this evening as the Trotters take on Aston Villa. The midfielder has been out for six months and given Bolton’s recent performances, it’s fair to say they’ve missed his presence in the centre. Owen Coyle is making sure the pressure is off, though:

Stuart has been working so hard to get back to the outstanding level he was at. We don’t expect him to be there yet. When he does get back to himself we will be a better team. He still needs match time.

Steve Bruce has been explaining the reasoning behind his decision to bench Lee Cattermole on Sunday. The Sunderland skipper was replaced by David Vaughan in central midfield and the club duly won their first game of the season, with Vaughan outstanding on his first start.

I am a big believer that you don’t really get that back until you have been back as long as you have been out. They need games, and Lee certainly comes into that category. Nobody epitomises what I like about a footballer more than my captain, but at the moment, it’s not going too well for him, so we gave somebody else a go in David Vaughan.

Jack Wilshere reckons his injury comeback is ahead of schedule. Having been expected to be sidelined with an ankle injury up until possibly Christmas, the Arsenal midfielder took to twitter yesterday to reveal:

“Good day at football today! In the gym again! Ankle feeling a lot better hope to be back playing soon!”

It’s been reported Louis Saha was axed from Everton’s squad for refusing to play in a midweek reserve game. The Frenchman used his twitter account to reveal his disappointment on the matter but it perhaps bodes well for Fantasy owners of Tim Cahill- the Australian has been fielded as the lone striker for David Moyes’ side in recent games and may continue up front in light of Saha’s situation.

Kenny Dalglish refuses to commit to a definite comeback date for Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool skipper was expected to return after a six-month absence for the Carling Cup tie with Brighton tomorrow evening, but Dalglish’s stance is non-committal on the matter:

It’s natural everyone will chase Stevie, especially after we lost 4-0. He has done fantastically well to get where he is. We will monitor his fitness, we will see how it goes, and then we will decide between ourselves when he is fit to play.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

2 Arsenal players is overboard. Walcott will not bring you points get Arteta instead and swap RVP with Aguero or Rooney. Arteta is the man that will provide this season. Get rid of Nasri and get in Silva aswell as Silva will be at least 10-20 points ahead of Nasri when the season is over.

My team has been rubbish the last few weeks. I have 2 free transfers but not sure what to do with them. I actually still quite like the look of the team so maybe i should stick with it? Would like to get Silva in for Nasri maybe but no easy way of doing it.Also maybe get Aguero in for Van Persie. But no easy way of doing these when already have 3 man city and 0.0m in the bank.

    Any idea's

    Given
Bosingwa, Kompany, Simpson (Ward, Da laet)
    Arteta, Nasri, Jarvis, Brunt (Dyer)

If you've got two free transfers, you could do RVP -> Aguero, and then Dzeko to someone like Adebayor? You'd end up with a bit of money left in the bank that way too. But it is a bit of a generic move.

I did consider that one. Have not seen any of the recent Arsenal games, does Van Persie still look dangerous? Is Aguero more safe from rotation than Dzeko?

I've only seen the Blackburn game recently, so not fully qualified, but in general they've not looked themselves - I don't have any Arsenal coverage at the moment and don't think I will until I see more positive signs, especially when other teams are firing away at will.

As for Aguero, it's difficult to tell, but at the moment he seems slightly safer than Dzeko.

IMO moves like Nasri - Silva and Dzeko - Aguero are ludicrous. Maybe when you play your wildcard you could look at changing your coverage, but until then its just a complete waste of transfers.

Doubling on Arsenal is a bit much at the moment though. You could consider Arteta out for SWP or similar, giving yourself a bit in the bank for a double switch next week.

          Last week's points maybe.

Like I said, if you're on a wildcard then go for it. But there's every chance that it will be Nasri crossing for Dzeko this week and Silva and Aguero will be quieter.

I could be wrong though, and will be seriously considering the wildcard after GW7 if the next 2 weeks are the same as the last 2.

    Silva - Mata - SWP - Jarvis - Dyer
    Rooney - RVP - Dzeko

Brought in Aguero, have Rooney, just seems mad not to have both now. Pretty much anyone who's near the top has em, so I figure they can't get too much further away if I have em too. Damage limitation 5 weeks in! That said, those at the top are averaging over 80 a week, very high in relation to past seasons methinks.

Afternoon all. Bit of a dilemma this week regarding transfers.

Got 2 freebies, first one is concrete and has been planned for a while, A.Young --> Mata.

Then i'm struggling. I'm tempted to stick, but not sure I can cope without Aguero any longer, no matter if he starts or not, or who he's playing against, he's killing me.

    So:
    RVP --> Aguero

    or:

    Dzeko --> Sturridge

Or, both for a 4pt hit? Or neither and hope Dzeko outscores the Agueromonster. Thoughts?

Bolton look awful at the moment, as bad as Arsenal are, I still think they'll score. I suppose i've got Arteta for coverage mind.

I would definately make the first transfer but otherwise I would stick, Arsenal might be struggling defensively but RvP still can score and there's always going to be a rotation issue with City.

That's my personal opinion though, I would stick with RvP and Dzeko and save the transfer for next week.

Thanks for the input. I agree there is rotation at City, but I feel Aguero is proving to be the star man there, and more likely to start than others. Also, he could come on for the last 20 mins, and still score more than most!

    Hey guys,
I'd love your opinion on the following. I've had an average start to the season. 281pts.

    My team now is:

    Given/Vorm
    Baines/Kompany/Brown/Simpson/DeLaet
    N'Zog/Sinclair/Toure/Jarvis/Moses
    Suarez/Dzeko/Rooney

Seriously considering WC. I have to change my midfield. As I see it there are too many expensive 2/3 pointers.

    Looking at:

    Krul/Vorm
    Bosingwa/Kompany/Brown/Delaet/Simpson
    Nani/Modric/Silva/Barton/Dyer
    Suarez/Sturridge/Rooney

There are so many differentials. I'd love to see what people think. Thanks in advance.
    Advice is most welcome.

agree, defence is too weak - you have three big hitters in mf in Nani / Silva / Mata so i would downgrade arteta & johnson (i like johnson but obvious doubts around gametime). best i don't partcularly rate, but recent performances suggest he's a decent pick.

My current team with 1 FT

    Given Vorm

    Bosingwa Kompany Simpson DeLaet Enrique

    Walcott Silva Mata SWP Dyer

    Dzeko Rooney Long

I want to get rid of long but only have 0.2m in da bank.

Do you think it is worth Walcott & Long >>> Arteta and Sturridge (4pt hit)?????

Or just get Best in and avoid the hit. He's in form and has a decent run of fixtures ahead. I don't think you need Sturridge as you already have Mata, and I don't think Chelsea will go goal crazy this week. And Walcott vs Arteta could go either way.

Of course he is, and the media fall for it as per. All the talk has been about Cole's attempted block, which shouldn't have been a red card or a penalty, rather than the two offside goals and the penalty awarded when Bosingwa clearly wins the ball.

That's simplifying it isn't it though. He played well all game as did Spurs. They could easily have been 3 or 4 nil up at half time. He actually started strolling about once the Kopites were down to 9 men so he must have scored those goals without even trying

Well regarding Roy I made the mistake last year regarding Odemtrain. I sold him after he was benched one week and sold him for a hit and brought Zigic. Second worst transfer for the season. I don't need to tell u what happened next. Zigic got injured and I think he brought me only 1 point and Odem went in mad bringing the points week after week. Due to the fact that I think that Brunt is protected and he won't fall in price I am gonna keep him. Nice fixtures and he is their captain after all.

I am hoping for switch to 4 5 1 formation that ill suit Brunt,
