Ahead of the midweek Carling Cup ties, the paper talk is mainly on returns from injury. Hatem Ben Arfa and Owen Hargreaves look set for their first starts of the campaign, as is Bolton’s Stuart Holden. Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez give Sir Alex a welcome boost, while Kenny Dalglish is still uncertain over Steven Gerrard’s imminent return to action. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Alan Pardew intends to given Hatim Ben Arfa his first start of the season this evening. Newcastle square up to Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup and Ben Arfa is set to feature in just his fifth senior game since moving to Tyneside last season. Pardew was more than a little complimentary of the Frenchman and admitted he envisages playing him as a forward, when Ben Arfa is good and ready:

He will bring a creative force to the team that is different to what we have. He is probably different to a lot of players in the Premier League. He’s elusive on the ball. What’s important for him is to make sure he grabs the work-rate that we have got in the team.

If he grabs that, he’s got a good chance of getting into this team. He will have that number 10 role that Demba Ba did on Saturday and did very, very well for us, so that’s where he’s got good competition.

Bobby Zamora has admitted he’s happy with Martin Jol’s decision to limit his game time of late. The Fulham forward has grabbed two goals in his last two games since returning from stiffness in an ankle joint and Jol has been resting him from European competition in order to ensure his availability for Premier League action:

Obviously, I want to play. The European nights are nice but, at the minute, we want to get points in the Premier League. In terms of my ankle, I’d rather rest to be honest.

It’s been reported Javier Hernandez has escaped with nothing more than a bruised shin following Ashley Cole’s horror tackle at Old Trafford on Sunday. After Man United ran scans on the Mexican, his agent, Eduardo Hernandez, revealed the good news and reckons his client should even return to training in the next day or so:

Nothing, it’s just a bump, nothing more. It looked like (his absence) was longer, they were looking for a fracture, that’s why they ran those tests on him. I expect him to be training without incident on Wednesday.

Danny Welbeck has given Sir Alex Ferguson more good news on the injury front. Having deputised for Hernandez at the start of the season, Welbeck succumbed to a hamstring strain after a superb first few games but is already back training and pushing for a place in the first team ahead of United’s Carling Cup visit to Leeds tomorrow:

I’m feeling good. I don’t know the squad yet for Leeds but, if I’m called upon, I’m always prepared to be there as I feel ready. I wouldn’t be training if I wasn’t.

Owen Hargreaves looks set to feature for Man City in the Carling Cup clash with Birmingham tomorrow night. Roberto Mancini will make the decision after training today but the likelihood is that the former Man United midfielder will pull on a City shirt for the first time at the Etihad Stadium showdown with the holders, after impressing the Italian in recent training sessions.

Stuart Holden should make his first-team return for Bolton this evening as the Trotters take on Aston Villa. The midfielder has been out for six months and given Bolton’s recent performances, it’s fair to say they’ve missed his presence in the centre. Owen Coyle is making sure the pressure is off, though:

Stuart has been working so hard to get back to the outstanding level he was at. We don’t expect him to be there yet. When he does get back to himself we will be a better team. He still needs match time.

Steve Bruce has been explaining the reasoning behind his decision to bench Lee Cattermole on Sunday. The Sunderland skipper was replaced by David Vaughan in central midfield and the club duly won their first game of the season, with Vaughan outstanding on his first start.

I am a big believer that you don’t really get that back until you have been back as long as you have been out. They need games, and Lee certainly comes into that category. Nobody epitomises what I like about a footballer more than my captain, but at the moment, it’s not going too well for him, so we gave somebody else a go in David Vaughan.

Jack Wilshere reckons his injury comeback is ahead of schedule. Having been expected to be sidelined with an ankle injury up until possibly Christmas, the Arsenal midfielder took to twitter yesterday to reveal:

“Good day at football today! In the gym again! Ankle feeling a lot better hope to be back playing soon!”

It’s been reported Louis Saha was axed from Everton’s squad for refusing to play in a midweek reserve game. The Frenchman used his twitter account to reveal his disappointment on the matter but it perhaps bodes well for Fantasy owners of Tim Cahill- the Australian has been fielded as the lone striker for David Moyes’ side in recent games and may continue up front in light of Saha’s situation.

Kenny Dalglish refuses to commit to a definite comeback date for Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool skipper was expected to return after a six-month absence for the Carling Cup tie with Brighton tomorrow evening, but Dalglish’s stance is non-committal on the matter:

It’s natural everyone will chase Stevie, especially after we lost 4-0. He has done fantastically well to get where he is. We will monitor his fitness, we will see how it goes, and then we will decide between ourselves when he is fit to play.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Double chances created by Lamps this year and most key passes. I believe that he is still good player and valuable for Chelsea. That lineup from AP has Meireles defensive mid which won't bring us far.

He can't/ won't play 40 - 50 games a year but he is still good.

He is hot trash man, and a serious liability. Overlooking the fact that he stopped playing on what was an obvious off-side, or the fact that he waved at Nani when he should have closed him down. He is useless in their style of play, almost no evasiveness or agility to buy himself time on the ball in a position that he should. This is a team that should be toning-down the directness of the past and maintaining a bit more possession. Hell Luiz, Ramires and Meireles would make a better holding mid, and Mata would be far better in the hole. Anyone saying anything else is holding on to the past. If AVB were truly serious about shaking this team up for a run, he´d hurt this dude´s feelings before it´s too late. Screw him and his PK/FK poachin ass...

I have no soft spot for him. I´m tired of those types stealing checks and keeping better lads down in their diminished capacities 11.8...you have got to be kidding me?

Yup, agree with that. Really don't think Sturridge - thought he was poor again on Sunday - but he's the only real option out there, Kalou and Malouda have had far too many chances.

He will improve though, Kalou and Malouda won't. He is greedy etc but he is also very direct, which i think chelsea have been missing. He'll punish the weaker teams imo.

Would be good so see McEach instead of Mata and then Mata in Sturridges place. Next season maybe.

Hard to tell really. The United game was an extreme case because the intensity of the game was so high, and Lampard just couldn't keep up, but the majority of games will be completely different to that, and Lampard should be able to influence the game a little more - rather than not at all as was the case on Sunday.

My thoughts on the matter are hardly secret, I think Lampard has completely lost it as a footballer, and actually think he did a long time before now. Very interested to see whether or not he starts at the weekend against Swansea, if not it could be the end for him.

I don't hate him, I'm just fed up of watching him playing like dirt week in week out for the past couple of seasons. He doesn't get in the team on merit, like AP says, he doesn't offer anything to the Chelsea team any more.

        i.e.

        Anelka Torres Mata

Mata played in the middle in the second half on Sunday, when Lampard went off. It was more of a 4-2-3-1, with Mata more advanced than Ramires and Meireles. Obviously it worked quite well, and got the best out of Torres.

    Finally, it's either:

    Given [Vorm]
Bosingwa | R. Taylor | Shorey [Ward, Boyota]
Young | Silva | Petrov | SWP [Obertan]
    Aguero | Adebayor | Rooney

    or

    Mignolet [Vorm]
Bosingwa | R. Taylor | Shorey [Ward, Boyota]
Young | Silva | Mata | SWP [Tiote]
    Dzeko | Adebayor | Rooney

I'm swaying towards the 2nd squad, it maybe a big hit on transfer points but i'm not doing great so i'm not fussed plus I think the 2nd squad can last without any transfers for at least 2 weeks!

I assume people bringing in Adebayor are mainly doing it to catch the price rises and make money? I don't remember ever thinking that he was essential over the past few years.

I know that casuals are bringing him in en masse after his two goals in a high profile game and I guess they won't consider that he scored them against 9 men!! But, hey, why not take advantage and make some cash right?

That is my dilemma basically (are you reading my mind?)...

Already done my free transfer (Brunt > SWP) but tempted by Dzeko > Adebayor but I'd really only be doing it to chase price rises when, in reality, Dzezo is more likely to score heavily at the weekend. So, I am going for Dzeko.

Like a lot of dilemmas on here I think it depends whether you're wildcarding or not. I would (and did) pick Ade over Dzeko on my wc but if I hadn't and given City's run of games I wouldn't make the trade now. City could smash Everton at the weekend and Dzeko could score well again. He still got you 5 points at the weekend don't forget.

when he's on form he has been essential over the past few years. I remember getting him in for a couple of spells in his arsenal days and he was immense. Captained him most weeks. He is showing that same kind of form now.

Form player with a strong recent track record (did well at Real Madrid) plus a good fixture next week and the Arsenal game coming up (and we know how he likes to score against them) makes Ade in a very shrewd move imo.

There's a lot of talk of casuals v so called experts on here as if they have no right to points for having the good sense to get good players in.

depends on what their fixtures are like after the double GW, a lot of people end up in a right old mess when they bring in loads of players for the DGW (which then doesn't go to plan) and they are left with loads of players with crap fixtures...

My theory is that you certainly want at least one (the best option available) so that you can captain him. After that, returns diminish and, personally, I would not bring anymore players in especially for the DGW unless you want them longer term anyway. Otherwise you will end up regretting it and have to sort your team out.

E.g for the Tott - Everton DGW I will try and bring in one Spurs player and captain him but that's it.

He will come good over the course of the season. A few weeks ago eveyone on here was calling him a "season keeper" so what's changed? Its not like there are any better options at that price. Dzeko? Rotation headache. Adebayor? Flash in the pan. Hernandez? Possible rotation and do you want him AND Rooney?

First Post. I have Mata and Kranjcar at the moment but am toying with the idea of Meireles and Arteta instead.
I have Adebayor for Spurs coverage but quite fancy having Krancjar as a differential as nobody in my league has him, likewise with Mata and Meireles. The guy I'm chasing has Arteta, which is putting me off that option but I don't have any Arsenal coverage. Any thoughts?

    Krul, Vorm

    Bramble, Woodgate, Raylor, Berra, A.Ferdinand

    Mata, Young, Arteta, Modric, Dyer

    Aguero, Rooney, Sturridge.

Solid rotatable defenders all 4.5 from decent defending teams.

Modric playing behind the striker? That'll be interesting

Amazing how a couple of players in, one staying, and a few dead weights gone has transformed that team.

My man crush on Benoit A-E makes me biased though...

Still a DM, maybe worthwhile as a bench warmer.

Genuinely don't think Sandro will get back in the team, despite being good.

          It will either be:

          VDV
          Adebayor

          or

          Adebayor Defoe

Can't see Modric playing that far forward, the deeper role suits him down to the ground, and 'Arry will presumably want to stick with Parker-Modric in the middle.

Groin strain - unlikely. More likely vs Basle 4 days later.
