[sbu_large_image] Champions League

The Champions League won’t be around for us to sink our teeth into over the next couple of days, but we’ve still been scouring the continental goings-on with the action from La Liga to the Eredivise and beyond as we try and get the beat around Europe.

For our budding crop of UEFA Fantasy Champions League Fantasy managers, here’s what happened outside of the Premier League last weekend…

La Liga

Barcelona course-corrected in style from two consecutive two-all draws as they annihilated Osasuna 8-0 at the Nou Camp. Leo Messi was his superlative best, with Dani Alves and Cesc Fabregas in particular working brilliantly in tandem with the little Argentine. The seven-year stay in London for the latter appears to have seemed like just a short holiday the way that pair have been combining to date.

Sometimes words aren’t enough (83% possession!) so what follows instead is a simple list of the scorers and providers in this La Liga humiliation…

Goals: Messi (3), Fabregas, Villa (2), OG, Xavi
Assist: Alves, Messi (2), Abidal, Villa, Fabregas(3)

Less successful on the Saturday of La Liga action were Villarreal, who faced-off against newly-promoted Granada and ended up on the wrong end of a 1-0 defeat. With the “Group of Death” (Napoli, Bayern, Man City) already on their upcoming plate this isn’t the kind of result wanted in preparation. Guiseppe Rossi missing a penalty won’t have done them any favours, either.

After failing to score away at Genk of Belgium last week Roberto Soldado shrugged off the weight of our first tips article by being the difference in Valencia’s 1-0 victory away at Sporting Gijon; a simple tap-in from the goalkeeper’s rebound was all it took.

While Barcelona fiddled at home Real Madrid burned their chance of staying ahead when Jose Mourinho’s men suffered a shock 1-0 defeat away at Levante. Even with Mesut Ozil and Christiano Ronaldo starting from the bench and Sami Khedira getting dismissed for a second yellow card late in the first half, there were little to no excuses for Madrid’s inability to convert their chances.

Bundesliga

The reigning champions of Germany continued their stutter of a start in the Bundesliga as Borussia Dortmund lost 2-1 away at Hannover. Shinja Kagawa put the visitors in front early in the second half but two very late goals, and a red card, for the home side took the wind right out of BVB’s sails.

The pretenders to the throne over at Bayern Munich barely needed to put in a sweat as they casually strolled to a 2-0 victory away at Schalke on Sunday afternoon. Nils Petersen filled in for the injured Mario Gomez and opened the scoring from a Frank Ribery through ball and Thomas Muller closed the game after work from Rafinha down the right flank.

With three home games in their next four Champions League ties the Bayer Leverkusen squad might offer some good value options for Fantasy Managers. Losing 4-1 at home to fiercest rivals Cologne won’t have been on the playbook then. A consolation goal for Simon Rolfes and late red card to Andrea Schurrle (suspension will see him miss the trip to Bayern but leave him fit and raring to go for the visit of Genk) will be very slim positives.

Ligue 1

A certain Joe Cole made his first start in France’s top division as Lille wound out their second 2-2 draw in the space of just a few days. Eden Hazard converted a penalty and picked up an assist, while summer signing Benoît Pedretti also found the net for Rudi Garcia’s men. Mathieu Debuchy picked up two yellow cards and had to draw an early bath as a consequence.

One side in the Champions League disappointed, while another capitalised and went top of the table in the remaining French fixture under our watch. The dual Olympic sides of Lyon and Marseille had a Sunday evening kick-off and the home side ran out 2-0 victors. Michel Bastos set up the first goal for Bafe Gomis with an amazing curved cross before adding the second following a Maxime Gonalons break.

Serie A

Four games in and Inter Milan got through their first game of the season without the monkey of defeat on their back to worry about. A 0-0 draw at home to Roma, while technically an improvement, is hard to consider much of a step forward based on the evidence of the match undertaken. Gian Piero Gasperini and his side are clearly struggling right now.

Milan and Napoli, both sides high up on our fantasy radars, faced off in an entertaining Sunday fixture. Alberto Aquilani put the visitors ahead but an Edinson Cavani hat-trick condemned Massimo Allegri’s champions to a 3-1 defeat and leaves them -similar to Inter- with just one point on the board after two Serie A fixtures. Napoli’s win means they are one of only four sides to take the maximum points from both their opening fixtures.

The Rest of Europe

Ajax: Last season’s Eredivise champions grabbed their second draw in quick succession as they were held 2-2 away at PSV Eindhoven. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and his replacement Dmitry Bulykin scored the goals with assists from Simon De Jong and Gregory Van Der Wiel.

Benfica: A comfortable 4-1 victory against Academica was enjoyed by the home fans as Bruno Cesar and his replacement Pablo Aimar both notched while Nolito continued his glorious start for the club with another 2 goals.

Zenit: After going two goals down away at Rubin, St. Petersberg came from behind to win 3-2 courtesy of a brace from Danny, following a Roman Shirokov goal.

CSKA: A 1-1 draw away at FK Rostov saw Seydou Doumbia carry on with his goalscoring form following his brace at Lille in midweek.

Porto: Andre Villas Boas’ old side kept a clean sheet but failed to score themselves as they wound out a 0-0 game away at Feirense on Sunday evening.

FC Basel: A second string side won 4-0 away from home at Enschenbach in the Swisscom Cup – there’s little to be gleaned here, unfortunately.

Lost on previous post. Which option looks better to you guys? It is for the next 6 weeks. Both Liverpool and Chelsea have great fixtures.

1 – Holt out, Suarez in
    2 – O’Hara out, Mata in

Both sponsored by Baines. I still like him in my team but his fixtures & price....

    Cheers

I am not sure actually, both away this week, Liverpool stuttering a little and Wolves a tough team to beat usually.

If you are asking why I chose Hennessey and Vorm, I was on WC 2 weeks ago and they were cheap and rotate well after the next GW I think.

Not to keen on an 8 point hit , so fingers crossed Bent stays at 10M and Rooney at 12.5M.

Gawd, I really want to get Aguero in for RVP, but it means taking out some other City, so probably Dzeko > Sturridge.

Seems like madness given the fixtures, but a no brainer given the form.

Would hate to lose RVP and have him finally rake in some points but honestly right now it's not lookign likely. Having Aguero would help me stop losing ground on rivals.

    Stick or twist?

Stick imo, I can certainly see RVP and Dezko outscore Sturridge and Aguero this weekend, meaning you can take some points on your rivals, but I know the feeling and I am kind of glad I am not in your boat, this time..

If aquero doesn't do anything for one reason or another and rvp scores well you will surely lose even more ground,as a fair few will have rvp. Risky twist for this game week, might be worth holding off for another week.

Cheers for the thoughts fellas. This is the risk I guess, but on the other hand if Aguero goes wild again and Arsenal flop again (quite conceivable), the rot continues.

Think I may give it this week and if it doesn't work out then make a few changes.

Anyone who hasn't got Silva and doesn't plan to get him?

I reckon he'll be a rotation threat soon enough and he's gotten too expensive to warrant buying. Not to mention any value you've gained will be spent on bringing him in when you really should've got him at 9.5.

This might just be me though who had him first GW but jumped on the Yaya Toure 10 shots bandwagon and missed out on all his points.

I think he's one of the best midfielders in the league, should be worth the money imo. I'm not getting him because I've got Nasri and would expect their returns to be fairly similar.

Its annoying to miss out on price rises but if a player is worth having i'd try not to let that put you off as it can often just let you fall further behind. Points are the objective, not price.

i was sceptical over him but the scary thing is i can only see his getting even better. if mancini opts for a formation with just one of silva or nasri i can always see him going for silva and most of the time he seems to want to play both anyway. i can't see him being rotated really, maybe the odd 60min substitution and a rare complete rest instead. when mancini subbed him against fulham he looked bemused as if he was saying i'm not tired at all

You are on the opposite end of the scale for using a WC.

Your proposed moves look just fine, but I just worry about Bos losing out to Luiz off and on. Bos is almost at 6.0 now, so that's a big expenditure, if you wanted to improve your mids- who all are equally priced except Silva. I would think about a cheap defender from SWA and a bigger 2nd Mid in the next few weeks- like VDV. Just a thought.

thanks jack frost thinking of getting rid of Bent + Baines and possibly walters for a -4 poin hit...

        could do...

        Baines > N.Taylor
        Walters > Mata
        Bent > Aguero

All the Dzeko lovers think on this.

Last season Man c had just Tevez , Barlotelli and Dzeko , yet Dzko had very limited playing time.

Now Kun has arrived and has formed a special bond with Silva.
It wont be long before Dzeko is back on the fringe.

Yes he has had a couple of good games, but that freekish form was short lived. nobody is that good

Last season Dzeko failed to do anything.

This season even when not playing particularly well he is doing exactly what he was bought to do. Mancini clearly thought he was needed when he bought him.

He bought Aguero to replace Tevez.

different emphasis on attack tbh. Man City basically played 4 3 2 1 last season and have , you could argue switched to 4 3 3 of late so a striker such as Dzeko thrives on such a formation as he did in Germany.

Dzeko was brought into a team under pressure to ensure they secured 4th place so there was no time or opportunity for Mancini to ease him in to the formation.

I think Mancini will play Tevez but his main men are Aguero/Dzeko, partly due to his disloyalty (Tevez's)

You may have a point in there somewhere but the logic is terrible.

The last sentence could just as easily be applied to Aguero (moreso in fact since his form is better).

Your justification seems to be that Aguero has formed a 'special bond' with Silva - bit wishy wasy.

Dzeko has limited gametime but was playing guff and clearly not ready for the league, now he seems to be and has found abit of form. No doubt in my mind Aguero is the main man right now but Mancini said last week that Tevez will have to wait for his turn.

Right now I think Aguero/Dzeko is the preferred option.

    Squad Currently

    Vorm (Al-Habsi)
    Simpson/Bosingwa/Ward (Shawcross, De Laet)
    Young/Walcott/Dyer/Jarvis (Brunt)
    Rooney/RVP/Odemwingie

    Was thinking
    1. Walcott>Murphy and Odemwingie>Aguero
    or
    2. Walcott>Murphy and Jarvis>Petrov

Different perspective, criticisms would be appreciated.

As other people ship Suarez out I'm tempted to get him in. Pools fixtures are pretty darn tasty coming up and Suarez is still liable to be at the centre of everything. Temptation.
