A favourable upcoming run of fixtures for Newcastle elevates Yohan Cabaye onto our updated Watchlist.

The summer signing from French champions Lille is starting to find his feet in the more frenetic Premier League and is becoming more integral to Newcastle’s style of play as the games go by. His burgeoning central midfield relationship with Cheik Tiote is beginning to click into place and while the Ivorian offers steel and solidity to the Newcastle centre, Cabaye’s passing ability and willingness to drive forward and take a shot is slowly but surely coming to fruition.

Last Saturday’s performance at Aston Villa is indicative of his growing influence – Cabaye hit the woodwork and had more attempts on goal than any player in Alan Pardew’s side in the 1-1 draw. In terms of creativity, he shone, too; only Juan Mata presented more goal scoring opportunities to his respective team mates in the Gameweek gone by.

Newcastle’s unbeaten start to the campaign and strong defensive displays mean Pardew’s side have conceded just two goals so far- the tightest defence in the top-flight- and Fantasy investment has resultantly been limited to their defence in the main. It’s understandable – with just four goals scored, they have yet to demonstrate a real cutting edge going forward but as Cabaye begins to pull the strings, an upturn in goal returns for the Toon Army faithful can surely be expected.

Joey Barton’s departure to QPR further stands the Frenchman in good stead- with set-piece duties in the bag, Cabaye will provide plenty threat with his impressive delivery.

With four home games in the next six (BLA, wol, TOT, WIG, stk, EVE) he should be afforded plenty opportunity to present himself as a strong mid-price option and coming in at just 6.0, he’s crept under the radar so far, with just 1.4% of Fantasy managers willing to take a punt.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

And Alonso was not a terribly good FPL player to own, much like I suspect Cabaye will prove.

2 freebies and 0.2m in the bank. What would you do with this lot?

    Krul Vorm
    Simpson DeLaet Bos Kompany Brown
    Nasri Walcott Taarabt Petrov Dyer
    Dzeko RVP Rooney

I really want Nani and Aguero, figuring out how to work them into the team but at the moment I can only see something drastic (i.e. an 8pt hit) - which seems completely pointless since I'd also be losing players with good fixtures this week.

Would rather not sleep on it completely and lose a free transfer though, any thoughts?

You could fiddle about with Nasri and Walcott, and get Nani + someone cheaper in.

I'd leave Aguero. Dzeko -> Augero is really crabby.

Not sold on Aguero? Long term he looks essential, its absolutely killing me not having him right now.

Toying with switching Walcott to Arteta and Nasri to Nani, that could definitely work.

As much as it may suck I don't think you should feel like you "have" make the transfers...what's the point if you're happy with your team. You could chip away and bring in those you think will aid your move...possibly the bench guys for this week...otherwise just leave it man...making moves you don't feel comfortable with seems silly to me...

I see your point, the problem is that I'm not happy with my team, just that it would take more than two transfers to rectify it - or to make the transfers in a wonky order which doesn't really work with the fixtures.

Will keep on tinkering, cheers again.

Ben arfa is going to be very interesting... If he gets back to full fitness he should notch 6 or 7 goals in 30 games + similar in assists. Nicely priced at 5.4 too.

At last there eems to be some budget midfielders coming onto the radar, SWP & ben arfa could be in most teams in about 4 weeks time

But in truth, Newcastle don't look like a team that's going to breakout attacking wise. Pardew has them very compact, very solid, but that inevitably means less attacking threat.

If I'm on NEW players, it's in Def, not Att. Cabaye might surprise me, maybe Be Arfa too, but I don't see it.

I don't know if Ben Arfa will necessarily take points away from Cabaye, I just think he could score more - and he's cheap enough to rotate. 6m feels a bit too much to be rotated.

I captained Cole last year, he got a cleanie and that was it. I wasnt even that pleased.

If u captain a defender and they conceed early, your pretty much screwed straight away. Least if u captain a striker they could nick a goal at anytime. Thats how i look at it.

Saying that Vidic (C) a few seasons a go when United had a double was epic, double clean, a goal and a load of baps i think.

Sturridge getting injured has scuppered my plans. Although AVB doesn’t sound too concerned by it in the BBC video. If he’s out this weekend, any advice on how to get Mata in?
Sinclair to Dyer, Walcott to Mata? Schwarzer to Krul to free up 0.5?

    Schwarzer, Vorm
Kompany, Bosingwa, Enrique, Simpson, De Laet

If you have 2x free, you have to make 1 or you'll lose it. Perhaps losing a transfer is OK, your choice.

But there's no way I'd be outing Vinny or Dzeko for Shawcross/Aguero, who's to say Dzeko won't go big this weekend. You might consider Suarez > Ade, but even that is shifting a home fit for away.

That said, I'm on Ade because of form, and Suarez doesn't have much of that.

4.8m to spend. Might go with a 4mill def from QPR/Swans and keep 800K in kitty. Might come in handy in a week or two.

"only Juan Mata presented more goal scoring opportunities to his respective team mates in the Gameweek gone by." - Against Utd aswell!

Young -> Mata this week for me i think, giving me:

    Mata, Nasri, Walcott Obertan
    Adebayor RVP(C) Dzeko

Next week - Walcott -> Nani, straight swap.

        For a reason 😉
Cabaye plays too deep for my liking, in a defensive minded team
Mata plays as an attacking midfielder for a top 3 club, scored 2 in 4 so far, crated more goalscoring chances than anyone last week (if i read that correctly) and is on set-pieces (and possibly pens depending on Lamps situation)

Thing is Boswinga might do just as well as Mata over the next couple of weeks. I'm sure Chelsea will start keeping CS and in attacking play might bring boners as well.

I just have a feeling NEW will come good in the goalscroing dept soon. Just as QPR did last time round.

No better fix than BB at home!

I want Ben Arfa for the long-term and have 2 freebies this week and don't really have any transfer I need to make. Would it make sense to transfer him in for Jarvis (Who is on my bench for this week anyway)? I'm thinking yes, but I wanted to see others opinions..

I'm in a similar boat. I have long term plans that it wouldn't make sense to start this gameweek due to some favourable fixtures but I don't want to lost a transfer by not making one this week. I might end up doing something prosaic like DeLaet to N Taylor.

Yes but if he doesn't play or aggravates his injury then I'd be better off sticking with Jarvis in the short term. If DeLaet isn't going to be a regular start then there's no point having him and that's a long term consideration.

Hypothetically if 4 out of your 15 squad were due for a drop from there original price value and your team value was already around 2.0 shorter than most teams. Would you take an 8 point hit to get in 3 players who were on a rise and have better fixtures?

That's a good question that there probably isn't a correct answer for. It depends on how much you think you'd gain for your new players compared to the ones you're about to sell.

In general I don't think there is any problem with taking an 8 pointer to preserve value at this stage of the season if it improves your team. Just be wary that plenty of really good players are dropping at the moment.

You shouldn't lose points for a penalty miss.

Player like Torres can miss an open goal and not lose points when another player has a great penalty saved by a great keeper and will still lose points.

I had him for a lot of last season and was a good pick. Lots of assists and set pieces, also got a fair few bonus.

This year his set piece and penalty threat diminishes because of Tarabt but i think his bonus potential increases. More emphasis is given on passes in the opposition half etc and he is involved in lots of play. I also think his assist count could be as good as with newcastle, once SWP and the forwards really gel with this new system.

I also think he's a good prospect as he is the only footballer on twitter to my knowledge who knows who Joy Formidable are. His indie music credentials are immense.
