A lot of the attention from last night will undoubtedly be focused on every fine detail of what went down at the Allianz Arena.

Off-pitch sulks, however, don’t earn UEFA Fantasy Champions League points, so we shall move swiftly along to matters on the pitch. Here’s our summary of the first eight fixtures from Matchday Two…

Triple Trouble For Madrid
As expected, the Galacticos of Real Madrid got the better of a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful Ajax side. The triple threat of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Kaka played equal parts in the final 3-0 result as each player scored a goal and grabbed an assist.

A stirring counter-attack involving all of the key attacking figures got Madrid on their way with Benzema crossing the ball in for Ronaldo to prod home. The goalscorer then teed up Kaka to rifle home from just outside the box with the circle finally completed as Kaka set up Benzema to prod home from inside a crowded box.

Marcelo’s suspension allowed Alvaro Arbeloa a rare start at left-back and new summer signing Raphael Varane made his Champions League bow for Jose Mourinho’s side, slotting in alongside Ricardo Carvalho in central defence.

Man City Caught Napping
The talk is inevitably going to be about Carlos Tevez and, to a lesser extent, Edin Dzeko. Unfortunately for City fans, matters on the pitch were far from any better. After a strong first thirty minutes, where the visitors held their own and could very well have earned themselves a penalty, everything began to slowly crumble.

Joe Hart put in a performance wholly undeserving of the 2-0 defeat bestowed upon him but too many of his team-mates -the midfield trio of Gareth Barry, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri in particular- failed to make any kind of positive impression on the game leaving the home side to dominate proceedings.

Of note, Kolo Toure also ousted Joleon Lescott and was thrown in at the deep end of City’s first ever away Champions League tie upon return from his drugs ban and will now be around to add confusion to that central defensive combination ahead of the weekend trip to Blackburn. Nigel De Jong also returned to the first-team fray- it was the Dutchman’s second-half introduction that prompted Edin Dzeko’s touchline strop.

928 And Counting…
Once they settled and capitalised on their profligate opposition, we saw Bayern Munich display just why they have now gone ten fixtures without conceding a goal.

Frank Ribery completely dominated Micah Richards down the left-hand side of the Bayern attack and Fantasy backers (yours included) will be disappointed his returns didn’t reflect his performance. Mario Gomez was on hand -twice- to mop up loose balls after Hart made good saves from Ribery, Muller and Daniel Van Buyten but was unable to do anything about the rebounded strikes.

Welbeck at the Double
With his first-choice forward pairing both sidelined through injury, Sir Alex Ferguson chose Danny Welbeck ahead of both Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen. The youngster, recovered from his recent hamstring strain, repaid his manager’s faith with two first-half goals, both set up by Ryan Giggs.

Basel showed plenty of fight to come back from two down; Fabian Frei scored after David de Gea had saved a Streller header and then set up namesake Alexander Frei to equal matters as he headed home from a cross. Antonio Valencia –restored on the right wing with Fabio at right-back- felled Streller in the box to allow Alexander Frei his second of the game from a spot-kick but Nani’s late second half introduction proved pivotal for the hosts, as he crossed for Ashley Young to nod home and deny the visitors a famous victory.

Ranieri Gets Inter Back On Track at CSKA
Since replacing Gian Piero Gasperini as Inter manager a mere week ago, Claudio “The Tinkerman” Ranieri already has two wins under his belt.

A Vladimir Gabulov mistake early in the game granted Lucio an open goal to start proceedings before Giampaolo Pazzini prodded home from inside six yards following a great surging run from Yuto Nagatamo.

The home side came back from two down when Alan Dzagoev rocketed home a masterful free-kick and Vagner Love found the bottom corner with precision.

One-man team Mauro Zarate recaptured the lead for the visitors almost instantly leaving the goalkeeper rooted to the spot when he snapped home from Esteban Cambiasso’s through ball.

Lyon Do It For The Scouts
We put a lot of faith in Remi Garde’s men and by all accounts they more than delivered. With three of their squad on the Champions League Watchlist we’re happy to see a return of two goals and a clean sheet and settle for the recovered ball bonus Michel Bastos picked up.

Bafe Gomis kicked things off when an errant pass by Zagreb fell his way and he scored one of the most sublime chips you will see this week.

Far exceeding his selection in the Watchlist Bakary Kone not only kept the clean sheet we were hoping for but also scored the second goal of Lyon’s 2-0 victory, turning home a Clement Grenier corner.

Cavani Keeps Up Appearances
The 60,000 strong crowd at the Stadio San Paolo witnessed a comfortable home win over Villarreal, as the hosts exacted revenge over last season’s Europa League conquerors.Marek Hamsik seized the opportunity first when he was found in acres of space by Ezequiel Lavezzi to slot home the opener. The provider was then felled in the box just minutes later and Edinson Cavani was on hand to earn his crust.

Another Lille Bit Of Bother
The reigning French champions had another costly night in the Champions League as they threw away a second consecutive lead and head back from Turkey with their second point in two Matchdays.

A magnifique 40 yard through ball from Eden Hazard found Moussa Sow and, from the most acute of angles, he sent the travelling fans into overdrive with a sublime finish. A quarter of an hour from the end Mathieu Debuchy was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area leaving Gustavo Colman to convert the penalty, despite the best efforts of Mickael Landreau.

Benfica Get The Job Done
The Portuguese picked up all three points in Romania and now sit joint top of Group C with Basel. Another wonderful through ball, this one over the top of two lines of defence, gave us our only goal of the game as Nicolas Gaitan found Bruno Cesar with the most delicate of passes giving him the time and space to lead Benfica to victory.

Chelsea could play a front 3 of Mata / Sturridge / Anelka. Aguero or RvP seem like safer bets.

If Rooney's confirmed out, I'm selling him for Aguero with my free transfer. Would it be worth doing Mata to Nani for a 4 point hit to get Utd coverage for Norwich at home? Or just go without any Utd, probably for the next 3 or 4 GWs?

I only bought Mata last week, and Chelsea have decent fixtures for the next 3.

If you can put up with maybe 30 min off the bench this weekend then until Christmas now have pretty much nailed on centre forward at 8.5 mill for one top 2 attacking teams in land

              Wont happen.

Dzeko has proved himself. He wouldnt pick Dzeko who scored 10 goals since end of last sesaon over Balo and Tevez and then drop him cos he was angry with his only competition being now only Balo who only has 1 goal.

People are reading way too much into it. Balo prob may start at weekend. Into future its Dzekos to lose.

Tevez strop last nite seals Dzeko for me.

If you fancy Rooney for the Liverpool and City games then don't transfer him out.
If you don't want him for those games then Rooney to another fwd who takes Penos and free kicks is probably a good move (i can only think of Van Persie here)

I don't like Mata and I'd swap him for Nani to have United coverage V Norwich.

That's the problem with a Tevez. They break into the coup just looking for food, but as soon as they kill the first one they become frezied by the blood and just keep killing until there's nothign but dead chickens and blood soaked feathers. You still see them hanging from gamekeepers gibbets out here in the country, and rightly so.

Is Young to Nani too lateral a move? Nani has been so consistent and when Young does get someone its minimal by comparison.

It's the sort of transfer that could either pay off big time, or cost you a lot of points, at least in the short term.

But, long term, I'd much rather Nani. I'd make the move, just don't blame me when Nani scores 3 points this weekend and Young gets 15! 😛

If these were any other two players, I'd think it was a lateral move. But when Nani caught fire he stayed lit. Young was hyped up last season too and would go seemingly months without a memorable performance. I feel like that narrative is beginning all over again.

Seems a horribly risky move to make this week. Long-term, yes, but home against Norwich is the kind of game Young could go nuts in.

Spot on nani is a few levels above young as nani consistently delivers.

Haha, I laughed when I heard that one too. Perfect.

Speaking of Crouch, did anyone else pick up on his interview that he just didn't care about Stoke winning or not, just that he'd scored. He missed some brilliant chances to win the game, but he still had a stupid grin and probably a semi about having scored his one goal.

I don't actually need the player for this week, already made enough transfers (Adebayor, Nanny and Rambo) so I can afford to bench the forward - maybe even keep Dzeko.

dbronaldo puts forward a decent argument for keeping Dzeko though. I'm just not sold on how well he suits City's style of play. There's so little width in the City side.

You've forced me into doing this, much against my will..... 😉

Two years ago it worked near perfectly. Ended up finishing 45th, after taking a lot of point hits throughout the season. Although that year there were a lot of double gameweeks, and the big sides consistently hammered the lesser sides at home, so the likes of Drogba, Lampard and Fabregas all scored very well.

Since that year, it hasn't worked quite so well, although that's partly down to the fact that the actual transfers have been pretty hopeless!

I still adamantly believe that point hits can be more than worth it.

Man I 'feel' that way too.
Every damn week I see some transfer that'll cost me 4 points that I'd love to make. I used to do it yrs ago but dont anymore. Last yr I finished top 2000, best finish ever.
I remember once taking a hit to bring in Rooney when he was on fire.
United scored 4 or 5 and Rooney scored none.
Since then I'm of the opinion this game is too unpredictable....
Otherwise I'd be top of my minileagues and cleaning up with my accumulators 🙂

I'll have to take a closer look later. When I look at your page theres no link to your transfer history so I'd have to look at your team week to week. Some of the changes to the website are't so great.

In this case we'll have to call it good play.

Any guys who have concentrated on Man Yoo for the season - will Phil Jones play the next game? Not 100% on availability of Vidic and Smalling, and even with the latter being fit, would he force Jones onto the bench in the RB slot?

    Any help appriciated.

I've got a horrible feeling Jones won't start against Naaaaaaaarich.

Smalling Rio Evans Evra, and then after the international break Vidic is back too. Bit of a headache all round.

Might keep a clean sheet then.

Cheers mate. Desperate to ship out Senderos and have a bit of £££ in the bank, but I've been bitten by the 'not played bug' this season, so I'm desperate to get a nailed on starter really.

RVP & Dzeko to Aguero & Wellbeck

(Wellbeck short term) Is he going to start this weekend?

    Good move?

Not sure why anyone should be getting rid of RVP ahead of the Tottenham game (which is normally highscoring) and then Sunderland, Stoke at home.

Welbeck in is a very short term transfer. I wouldn't bother.

Spurs have been solid with King back, and Parker and Sandro in the midfield. Arsenal don't have Fabregas anymore, they won't score more than 1 imo. I'm going for 2-0 Spurs. Glory glory chicken badge.

    Okay, bench two from:

Brown, Ward, Bosingwa, Kompany, Ramsey, Dzeko.

Thinking Kompany and Dzeko at the moment. Silly?

Surely you'd rather play Kompany than Ward and Brown? Better CS odds according to the bookies, and the bonus chance

Dzeko isn't going to start, according to Mancini, so he's definitely one of the bench boys.

Forgot to add Petrov to that list.
