A host of games last night saw Fantasy managers hold their breath with plenty Premier League stars in action. Aside from one or two reported knocks, it seems we’ve got off lightly ahead of the weekend. Here’s our comprehensive rundown on how the night panned out:

EURO 2012

Belgium’s 3-1 loss in Germany ended their chances of a place in next summer’s competition. As many as five Premier League players took to the field for the visitors- Simon Mignolet, Vincent Kompany, Marouane Fellaini, Moussa Dembele and Romelu Lukaku all come through unscathed, with Fellaini grabbing his country’s consolation. Per Mertersacker also featured, playing the whole ninety minutes for the hosts.

The Republic of Ireland sailed through to the play-offs after a 2-1 home win over Armenia. Richard Dunne grabbed the all-important goal for the hosts in a game that saw Kevin Doyle sent off. Giovanni Trappatoni started with eight Premier League players in his first XI, including the likes of Shay Given, Damien Duff and Simon Cox –chosen ahead of West Brom team mate Shane Long. The second half subs saw Stephen Hunt and Jonathan Walters appear as subs.

Roman Pavlyuchenko and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov were both on the scoresheet as Russia clinched their place as Group B winners with a comprehensive 6-0 demolition of Andorra. Andrei Arshavin also took part and pulled the strings, picking up a couple of assists as Dick Advocaat’s side qualified in style.

Chris Baird and Gareth McAuley were part of the Northern Ireland side that went down 3-0 in Italy. Nigel Worthington’s final game in charge brought little cheer and McAuley’s misery was compounded late on when a misunderstanding with goalkeeper Maik Taylor led to an own goal from the West Brom player.

Serbia’s match in Slovenia saw Nemanja Vidic make his first appearance since suffering a calf injury in the opening day of the season. The Man United skipper must wish he hadn’t, though- his decision to step up and take a penalty proved disastrous, with his second half miss helping maintain the hosts’ 1-0 lead and sending Serbia out of the competition. Aleksandar Kolarov, Branislav Ivanovic and Radosav Petrovic also started for the away side. Post-match, Vidic announced his retirement from international football.

France’s match with Bosnia finished all-square thanks to a couple of Man City players. The 1-1 draw in Paris gives Laurent Blanc’s side automatic qualification, with the away side now focussing on next month’s play-offs. Samir Nasri grabbed the all-important goal for France, with Yohan Cabaye and Patrice Evra both recovering from ankle and thigh injuries respectively to take their place in the French starting XI, alongside Florent Malouda as Younes Kaboul dropped to the bench. Edin Dzeko fired the visitors ahead and Asmir Begovic also came on in the second half, performing heroics between the posts to kept the hosts at bay.

Sweden’s thrilling 3-2 home win over Holland saw them clinch an automatic place as best runners-up across the groups. Seb Larsson scored a penalty and Martin Olsson also took part for the hosts, while the Dutch –despite already sealing their qualification as group winners last week- fielded a strong line-up. Michel Vorm, Rafael Van der Vaart, Robin Van Persie and Dirk Kuyt all started, with the latter grabbing a goal.

A victory for Greece in the other Group F game means Croatia will take part in the play-offs. Slaven Bilic’s side won 2-0 at home to Latvia last night, but it wasn’t enough to secure top spot. Vedran Corluka was withdrawn just after the half-hour mark- as of yet, there are no reports to indicate what the problem was. Luka Modric and Niko Krancjar also played, with the latter replaced midway through the second half for tactical reasons.

A goal from Gareth Bale helped Wales to a third place finish in Group G, with a 1-0 win in Bulgaria. Gary Speed fielded nine Premier League players in his starting XI, with Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen the recipients of high praise as their country finished the Euro campaign on a high, after starting the competition with four straight defeats. Stiliyan Petrov also took part, playing the full ninety minutes for the defeated home side.

Switzerland’s 2-0 home win over Montenegro proved scant consolation for the hosts; Montenegro’s draw against England last Friday had already ensured their play-off place. Johan Djourou was the only Premier League player involved in the fixture.

Denmark’s 2-1 home win over Portugal ensured their automatic qualification. Nicklas Bendtner maintained his recent good form, scoring the Danes’ second in a match that also saw Thomas Sorenson feature for the victors. Nani and Raul Meireles at least have the play-offs to fall back upon.

Norway’s 3-1 win over Cyprus wasn’t quite enough to see them through, with results elsewhere leaving them behind Portugal in third place. Morten Gamst Pederson and John Arne Riise both started for Egil Olsen’s side, with the Blackburn man firing the opener on twenty-four minutes. Pederson didn’t emerge for the second half, though while the above-linked match report suggests he was injured, Blackburn’s official site suggests it was a tactical reshuffle.

The Czech Republic cruised to a 4-1 win in Lithuania last night. Combined with Spain’s victory over Scotland, this ensured a play-off place is now on the cards for Petr Cech and co.

A masterclass from David Silva put paid to Scotland’s slim play-off hopes. The Man City man weaved his magic with two goals and an assist in Spain’s 3-1 win, before departing the proceedings on fifty-five minutes. Silva was the only Premier League player on show for the home side, with Juan Mata and Fernando Torres both dropping to the bench. Scotland started with eight Premier League players- Barry Bannan played with strapping on an Achilles problem and Darren Fletcher also recovered from an ankle knock, though it was sub David Goodwillie who grabbed the visitors’ goal from the penalty spot midway through the second half.

World Cup Qualifiers

In the race to qualify for Brazil 2014, Luis Suarez played the full ninety minutes in Uruguay’s 1-1 draw with Paraguay. Gonzalo Jara also lasted the full game for Chile in their 4-2 win over Peru. Pablo Zabaleta started in Argentina’s surprise 1-0 defeat in Venezuela but was subbed off just after an hour as the visitors searched in vain for an equaliser.

Ali Al-Habsi featured for Oman in the 3-0 defeat to Australia. South Korea defeated UAE 2-1, with Chu young-Park and Ji Dong-Won both featuring- the former grabbing a goal.

Friendlies

A handful of friendlies also took place over the last twenty-four hours. Poland’s 2-0 win over Belarus saw Lukasz Fabianski keep a clean sheet. John Obi-Mikel came on as a late second half sub in Nigeria’s 0-0 draw with Ghana. Antonio Valencia played sixty-three minutes in Ecuador’s 1-0 away win over the US. Tim Howard and Clint Dempsey managed the full ninety for the home side.

Javier Hernandez played the entire game in Mexico’s 2-1 home defeat to Brazil in the early hours of this morning, with Giovanni dos Santos getting eighty-two minutes. For the visitors, Lucas and David Luiz also featured, with the latter scoring an own goal.

Who for though? If you have RVP, there's not anyone that stands out as a must-have this GW. My gut feeling is there's not going to be many goals this weekend generally.

Odd how Jara has so many caps in what is quite a decent Chile side, but then never plays for WBA. Should really move somewhere else....

    ....like Chelsea!!!

We had a bit of a chat about him last night and a week ago when they played too. A real cult hero, as AB said.

Both time it started with him conceding and being booked inside a 3 minute period, bringing back memories because we were so many who owned him. Classic Jara.

Who came up with that idea of rotating a Newcastle defender and Jara anyway?

        That's exactly right, he's a cult hero.

Not sure who was the first to suggest the NEW/WBA rotation, may have been me. I had Enrique + Jara from week 3 last season until about week 14. Enrique only kept clean sheets on the bench (Everton and Arsenal away!), and Jara never scored more than 3 for me - and that 3 came against Newcastle when they lost their clean sheet in the last minute.

Slightly irritating seeing Enrique doing so well now, and even last season after I sold him - I think he got 6 BPs in the two games after I sold him. I was way ahead of the game on that one!

Yup, great stuff. As a postscript to the Germany-Belgium match, Per Mertesacker also played in the game and came through unscathed. As ever, he looked better at national level than at club level and was characteristically strong in the air. He's still limited technically with his feet though, and was partially to blame for Belgium's goal. Good news too for Kompany owners - having scored in midweek for Belgium against Kasachstan, he came very close to doing so last night too, forcing a good save out of Neuer.

In the French match, Cabaye and Nasri had poor games after impressing against Albania, but both seem fit. Alongside Ménez, Florent Malouda was probably France's most creative outlet in a desperately poor performance, and it was a surprise when he was substituted early in the second half. Dzeko took his goal very well, but had limited support for most of the second half.

This looks like a classic case of fixture rotation blindness!

Don't fear however as this is cureable, please look at the amount of goals these teams conceded last year and understand fixtures are not everything sometimes. As with JamsieP above we all get blinded by rotation and fixtures etc etc from time to time and I think this is one of those times I'm afraid.

      Hope this helps

    Hi.
Would really appreciate some advice on my WC-team.

    Krul Vorm
    Enrique Bosingwa Kompany Simpson Boyata
    Mata Silva Ramsey Moses Dyer
    Suarez Rooney Adebayor

I know that Adebayor might be out for the weekend, but i don't like VDV that much (injuries, playing on the wing, etc), and i would like some Spurs cover.
    Does Vorm and Krul rotate?
Is Krul and Simpson too much Newcastle cover?

I don't understand why people are still entertaining Moses.

Started every game so far and scored 2,2,3,2,2,2,2.

People can say how unlucky he has been etc, good fixtures etc but the evidence is there-he is not cutting it. I really would avoid.

If you are picking Moses, prepare for disappointment!

Can you afford 5.1? Bannan has scored or assisted in his last 3 and is surely a better shout. Set piece involvement etc....

Moses just seems to be a poor finisher tbh. Bad luck can only go on for so long but then again maybe there is a bit of Dempsey in him and he might get some goals eventually due to shear volume of shots.

for anyone with sessegnon it may be worth holding on for a bit?

ERIC Black believes Sunderland are about to get the best out of Stephane Sessegnon after an up-and-down campaign so far for the skilful Benin international.

Sunderland’s assistant manager admits efforts to mould a team around the African this season have not paid off.

But he is confident that the club can still help the 27-year-old fulfil his potential after watching him flourish against West Brom earlier this month.

He told the Echo: “Stephane is a player of such quality that we started the season with a system designed around him.

“The 4-4-1-1 formation, with Stephane playing just behind the main striker, should have brought the best out of him.

“We were looking to get the ball to him as much as possible and give him the chance to turn and run at defences, which is one of his strengths.

“But, unfortunately, that system coincided with a dip in Stephane’s form and, for whatever reason, it hasn’t worked as we would have liked – maybe he lost a bit of form or confidence, maybe the team didn’t gel as we would have hoped but, on all indicators, his stats were down from where they were last season.”

The watershed moment came in last month’s 2-1 defeat at Norwich City in which Sessegnon was awful, failing to get on to or hold on to the ball enough and snatching at every goalscoring opportunity, eventually shooting on sight from long range.

“That was when we knew we had to look at it again because when you’re feeling good and confident you don’t play like that,” said Black. “You don’t just instantly go for goal every time, you have the confidence to take things on.

“For the West Brom game, we looked to push him forward into a more orthodox position so that not everything had to go through him, and he looked far more comfortable and far more like his natural self in that role.”

Sunderland will go into Sunday’s match at Arsenal considering using Sessegnon as a lone striker, with on-loan Gunners forward Nicklas Bendtner unable to play against his parent club.

The diminutive Sessegnon is not a natural choice as a solitary striker, but he scored three goals in Sunderland’s final five games last season when he was played on his own up front.

Black said: “There’s a range of options for us this weekend and we’ll look at them all before deciding what we think is the best way to go.

“But we are looking at how we get the best out of Stephane and I think as time progresses we are finding out exactly what works with him and what doesn’t.

“It’s important that we look to find ways of helping him flourish because he’s such a wonderful footballer with bags of talent and he’s one of those creative players who have the ability to change a game in an instant.”

H Sunderland had a boost last night as Bendtner and Seb Larsson both got on the scoresheet in vital Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Bendtner notched as Denmark beat Portugal in a winner-takes-all clash to win their group – and automatic qualification for next year’s finals in Poland and Ukraine – while Larsson struck in Sweden’s fine win over Holland, guaranteeing an automatic slot as the best of the runners-up.

Was speaking to a City fan last night, and he also said that Caulker will be captain of England one day.

i think caulker will definitely be in the england setup/squad one day, captain may be a bit far fetched atm but he has the potential imo

you can see what our defence is like without him this season!!

I havent had a proper look but I think there are alot better striking options out there with Roo/Hernandez/RVP/Ade fighting for spots, and a 6.2 in the midfield could be good.

    Ade > Suarez

Hi guys, seem to be patching up an injury-ravaged squad this Gameweek....

Already done Taarabt->Ramsey for Arsenal's fixtures
and: injured Aguero->RVP for a 4 point hit

I currently have Brunt injured, and with Drogba(gametime) and Adebayor(rated 50:50 to play)

Would it be madness to do another 4 point hit to bring in Petrov for Brunt? This would then give me one decent sub (N.Dyer) to come in if Ade doesn't make it....

    Cheers 🙂

I've seen alot of people say "It was only Scotland" when relating to Silva - So to elborate a bit more - As posted in the last thread – It was a scottish team which boasted 8 out of 11 players playing in premiership (as Sir P has said above) the best championship striker, Stevie Naismith (who could easily hold his own down south) and a goalkeeper who would walk into 15 of the teams in the premiership. Scotland werent bad, Spain are just too good. Silva looked better last night as he was playing with 7 players from Barca and that’s his style of football. A great display by Silva but I wouldn't base his FLP returns on his performances for Spain, he is a great player but better player when playing International football as Manchester City do not play anywhere as near the same style as Spain. Its not a case of how bad Scotland are but how good Spain are.

Anyway, another great write Sir P

I'm really confused about what transfers (if any) any to do this. Stupid taking a punt on Welbeck last week means I don't know what do with him now, on top of that my defence is poor and Taarabt's a stroppy liability and possible Ade injury. Team is:
    Kenny
    Bos Ward Simpson
    Silva Nani Mata Taarabt
    RVP Ade Welbeck
    (Vorm; Dyer, Brown, Warnock)
Current thinking I should either switch Brown to Woodgate and then sort out Welbeck and Taarabt next week? Bos, Mata and Sturridge feels like a bit much Chelsea and unless Warnock says otherwise it does seem sensible to play Taarabt (he's still favourite for first scorer in that game). What do other people think?

I haven't posted a RMT in ages and would like some advise with my team if that's okay?

    Given Al-Habsi
Bosingwa Kompany Jones N Taylor Simpson
    Nasri Young Ramsey Larsson Ramires
    Aguero Odemwingie Agbonlahor

Should I look to transfer after this game week
    Odemwingie - Zamora
Then use the funds to transfer Nasri - Silva
then after gameweek 9 get rid of Young for Nani

Also what do people think of Ramires as a player?

Well it's different. I'd keep Nasri, he'll score less consistently but almost as well as Silva imo. Zamora seems to be better at home so would rather get Sturridge for Odem, you could do that this week. Jones may become a rotation risk with Vidic back. Not keen on Ramires, drops too deep when Frank plays - perhaps consider Petrov? If you freed up cash from Ramires you may be able to do Odem > Suarez next week?

Aguero and Ade up front and only 1 playing sub on my bench means I could be in les'poopy.

I wouldnt say he is "Nailed on"

He has had a good start to the season after a couple of injury hit years and is good going forward but he is still a liability defensively and gets caught out of position against the better teams.

I would imagine that the first choice Chelsea defence will be Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole before long (especially in the big games).

However Bosingwa's place is made more important by the fact that we dont really have any strong right mids and if Sturridge keeps the RW slot then I can see AVB wanting more security at the back and reinforcing with Ivan.

Its a tricky one as Luiz is only just coming back to fitness so we dont really know AVBs first choice... I would be interested to see chelsea try a 3-5-2

        Ivan Luiz Terry

RvP. He should lead the way in the captains poll.

    VdV or Nasri?

I currently have Dzeko, but set to remove within 1-2 weeks max. Also, no Spurs coverage.
