Owen Coyle has no sympathy for his Bolton underperfomers, Chris Smalling returns to centre-half for Man United, Steven Gerrard and James McFadden are glad to put their injury nightmares behind them and Ledley King’s groin problem is not as bad as first feared. Here’s some morning Scribbles for you, folks…

With his first start in seven months and a goal against Man United in the bag, Steven Gerrard can now look forward to this weekend’s home game with Norwich. The Liverpool skipper yesterday admitted he’d been pushing himself too hard last season and ultimately paid the price with a long-term groin injury the consequence- having now fully recovered, he expects to be back to his barnstorming best:

Before the operation I’d been getting niggles and having injections to play. I knew I wasn’t right. I was trying to put my body on the line. But it wasn’t the real me and I wasn’t the player I want to be. I was missing training sessions and coming in the day before a game trying to get that last session in, or having injections to play the next day. You can only do that for a certain amount of time before your body gives in, and my groin packed in on me. When it happened I was down and it took time before I got back in to a positive frame of mind. Without a doubt the last six months have been the hardest of my career.

In other Liverpool-related news, Glen Johnson came through a friendly game against Rangers unscathed last night. The right-back was given a sixty-six minute run out by Kenny Dalglish in the 1-0 loss and is now looking to push Martin Kelly all the way for a spot in the starting XI against Norwich. The Ibrox game also saw the Reds lose back-up keeper Alexander Doni to a dislocated finger against the Scottish league leaders.

James McFadden celebrated his return to Everton last night by turning out for the Toffees reserves. The Scot was given a forty-five minute run-out in a win over Sunderland reserves and was more than a little relieved to get some game time under his belt after confessing his surgeon had even told him to consider giving the game up, after continued setbacks with a cruciate knee injury:

I was training in March and then broke down again and when I spoke to the surgeon he said my time might be up. That was hard to take. It was hard that I didn’t know when I was going to get back playing. I think you have to take every day as it comes. I am coming here to get fit, get playing and try to enjoy my football and hopefully secure a longer-term contract. It is up to me to grab the chance and to show a bit of faith in the manager and show the fans I am good enough to play for Everton again.

Swansea’s Stephen Dobbie is set to miss out this weekend due to an ankle problem. Dobbie sustained the injury in last week’s defeat at Norwich and Brendan Rodgers admitted yesterday the Scot could be sidelined for a couple of weeks, raising doubts against his availability for the Gameweek ten clash with Bolton.

Alex McLeish has received an injury boost ahead of this weekend’s derby with West Brom. James Collins starting some light training yesterday and is expected to step up his recovery from a groin problem by returning to full training on Thursday. Collins was an ever-present in the Villa side up until last weekend, missing out in the 4-1 loss at Man City. On-loan midfielder Jermaine Jenas is also making good progress from an Achilles injury and is thought to be three or four games away from full fitness, according to the Villa boss.

Harry Redknapp was also the recipient of some positive injury news yesterday. The groin injury that forced Ledley King off in Sunday’s draw at Newcastle has been diagnosed as less serious than initially feared and reports suggest the centre-half may even have a chance of returning for the Gameweek eleven clash with Fulham.

Man United’s Champions League win in Romania last night saw Chris Smalling make a return to centre-half. It’s only the second time this season Smalling has started there, with the majority of his appearances coming at right-back. Post-match, the former Fulham man admitted it’s where he prefers to play:

It was nice to be back in central defence. That is my favourite position and I want to play as many games as I can there. But if I can contribute in any way, I will just give of my best.

Owen Coyle rang the changes in Bolton’s weekend win at Wigan and the replacements done him proud, halting the Trotters six-game losing streak. The likes of Gretar Steinsson and Fabrice Muamba were left out of the squad completely and Zat Knight managed only a place on the bench, as David Wheater slotted in alongside Gary Cahill at centre-half. Coyle told the Bolton Evening News that the players he omitted only have themselves to blame:

I don’t put them out of the team; their performances put them out of the team. If they don’t get to the standard, I have got to recognise there is someone else waiting in the wings. There weren’t enough players playing to the top of their ability to say: ‘I am in charge of that jersey’. It’s not easy leaving players out of the 18, never mind the 11. What I have said is when you get the jersey; it’s up to you to put in a performance to keep it.

Kevin Foley is expected to be out for a month after an operation on his problematic ankle yesterday. Mick McCarthy, speaking to the Wolves official website, also indicated Steven Fletcher is likely to be sidelined for two to four weeks with the calf problem that saw him miss the weekend defeat at West Brom.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

For future CL reference, Xherdan Shaqiri looked excellent last night for FC Basel after returning from suspension. Benfica's Emerson is no slouch at full-back but Shaqiri beat him for pace almost at will, and he also took a number of attacking free-kicks. His decision-making when making passes in the final third still looks a little questionable, but Shaqiri definitely outshone Fabian Frei on the other flank.

Only play the risky ball when you're sure it will lead to a goal-scoring chance, otherwise keep it to short passes.

Use the fast runners to get past people but try to dribble a lot with the slow ones.

My key is pass pass pass pass pass until I get to the goal. I never cross, and I don't do tricks. When I see a gap in the defence, I exploit it, otherwise I keep a lot of possession.

And don't be afraid of the back pass, you don't always have to move forward. Keeping the ball will also help you help concede less.

Best website for FIFA tips (well certainly for improving your VP) is http://blameyourany.com/

What exactly are you finding hard about scoring? Crosses, long range, scoring in general? Not finding scoring goals that much of a problem, but struggling to stop conceding them.

I played entirely on manual last night, and I actually found scoring from crosses easier, because they don't take that seemingly predetermined curling flight into the box straight to the defender in front of you.

Crosses are OK got a couple of goals from crosses, I seem to get congested on the edge of the box and all my shots are getting blocked (I am in a season not VP), any shot from long range goes wide and the only way I can get a goal from one on ones is getting penalties...

        Thanks for the link.

While I generally play with Arsenal online, I find when I come up against anyone who plays Barcelona, Messi is a destroyer of the most organised defence I can mount.

I think patience is the biggest asset in this years game, in defence and in attack. The dribble feature can be used to beat defenders time and time again, and player runs are more intuitive now so I find ball over the top works a treat. Also, snap shots, even under-powered at the keeper are spilled more often than not for a tap in. This seasons game is even better for the quick skillful players, use the likes of Messi/Nani/Walcott/Aguero to dance around defenders and the dribble abilities of same allow you to wait for a player to break free.

Arteta/Wilshere are really solid on the ball, good dribblers/passers, and I like the speed of Gervinho and Walcott flanking Van Persie, I just like the formation to be honest, and don't like being too predictable playing with Barcelona like a lot of people do online, I was playing with United most of the first week, but I found more of a balance to the Arsenal team.

I also LOVE City, Aguero is a beast, and plays very like Messi in the game, the precision dribbling feature really emphasizes the skillful quick players this year.

Try using Ryo Miyaichi. He's not that good at crossing. But he is faster than gervinho, who I've found is not excellent crossing or delivering the final ball himself.

And also try the 4-4-2 formation with Walcott and RVP up front, it works wonders for me to split the defence with a pass and have walcott run onto it. No one can catch up.

Erm... before placing a bet, I'd make sure first that the game is going ahead. There's currently fighting going on between Greek police and demonstrators in Athens right in front of Borussia Dortmund's hotel. There are road-blocks everywhere too. Here's a video of events released by the club.

      http://yfrog.com/fk6vpz

The big problem for Dortmund in recent weeks has been converting the many chances that they'll create. And their key striker Barrios has failed a fitness test today, which means that they'll be reliant on Lewandowski for goals. It worked at the weekend when they won 2-0 at Werder Bremen though. Better news in defence - it looks like Lukasz Piszczek will be fit to play.

    Current team for this week:

    Given (Vorm)
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Simpson (Brown, NTaylor)
    Nani, Silva, Ramsey, Cabaye (Dyer)
    Aguero, Suarez, Adebayor

    1 free, 1.0 in bank.

No idea what to do with my transfer- should I save it?

Eagles, I think with the current changes Coyle has made he and Reo Coker have wrenched influence in the mid from other clowns. They'll more importantly have role players now like Pratley and Ricardo Gardner to actually give him service out wide. And with two home games: Sunderland (Bardsley), Swansea (A) (Taylor) and Stoke (Marc Wilson ??wtf??) I like his chances. And @ 5.3 mil and 4.3% ownership, you could do worse. As a former Modric owner, I would stay away. Can't say anything bad about the others, in the end it's on you.

Thanks for the reply... Eagles could be a good choice. Getting him would enable me to upgrade Suarez to Rooney if needed. At 5.3m it doesn't feel as bad if he fails either 😛

Also gives you more formation options too. He won't look great every week like those Jarvis' (and cabaye, and Taarabt, and N'Zogs) that cost a little too much and don't seem to do anything. That is the appeal I'm finding with a Moses, he won't part the seas but he does stick his feet in the water everyday. Cheers.

I'm thinking over the next three weeks and hope a price change doesn't bite me in the ass. Mind you I could get rid of Bongy for Sturridge and make up the difference.

Then next three weeks would be RVP, Suarez, Bongy/Sturridge

Just made myself somekind of a transferplan for the next GW's

This week: Rooney & SWP > Suarez & Silva (Imo worth a 4 pt hit in the long run, maybe not this GW?)
    Next week: RVP > Aguero
    ...
    GW11: Mata > Nani
    GW12: Suarez > Sturridge
    GW13: Aguero > RVP/Rooney
    ...

Figure Silva has the better chance of racking points than SWP this week, despite playing at OT? Not sure tho, Chelsea have been conceding and considering SWP's "free role" he could bag a goal or an assist.. Could of course wait till next GW and do a double then, but I guess now its better doing it this week.

Also, which is better of RVP/Rooney from GW13 and on? Assuming i have got Nani as Utd cover and Ramsey as Arsenal..

    Thanks for any advice!

He looked bad condition-wise last night for sure. But there's no way he gets half points their next CL match isn't until Nov. And with Kolarov and Zabaleta on the bench there won't be the robotic huffed crosses (and subsequent loss of possession) from Lolarov and the lack of athletic support from Zabs (see Micah). There will probably be 30-40% more passes taking place. I've never seen him cramp-up before, but he did last night and that is troubling for sure.

    Given, Ruddy
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Simpson, Brown, Wilkinson
    Mata, Silva, Arteta, Moses, Dyer
    Rooney, Dzeko, Sturridge

2 free transfers with 2.4 in the bank.

Dzeko to Suarez if he's not gonna get banned, otherwise it's Adebayor i'm getting. Arteta to Ramsey too sideways? Welcome to all suggestions, thanks in advance.

I'm bringing either M Petrov or Eagles in.

    Which option would you prefer:
    1)
Arteta and Eagles for GW9 [I also have RvP]
Walters and Eagles from GW10 onwards with enough cash to do Buzsaky -> Brunt/Sess in GW12
    2)
    Barton and Petrov for GW9
Walters and Petrov from GW10 onwards with ~1.2M in the bank (useless to upgrade Buzsaky in midfield)
    ?

    Factors:
    - neither Petrov nor Eagles are undroppable (am I right in thinking that Petrov is probably more likely to be dropped with Klasnic back?)
    - Eagles's excellent individual performance against Wigan was far better than Petrov who was covered by 3 Wigan players
    - Eagles has been very inconsistent so far, Petrov's form is low
    - ... [more factors welcome!]
