Our look at some of the crucial head-to-heads focuses on the attempts of Arsenal’s new centre-half to tame Peter Crouch as Stoke visit the Emirates. Elsewehere, Gareth Bale will fancy his chances against a makeshift full-back and Martin Petrov will be hoping to get the better of John O’Shea in a crucial Reebok showdown near the foot of the table.

Per Mertesacker vs Peter Crouch

Arsenal’s recent home league record of just 1 goal conceded in the last three games at the Emirates suggests a definite defensive improvement but the visit of Stoke will put this theory to the test. The Gunners know what to expect on Sunday afternoon- an aerial bombardment is on the cards, as Matthew Etherington and –if fit- Jermaine Pennant deliver crosses aplenty from out wide as the Potters look to find Peter Crouch with high balls into the box.

In Per Mertesacker, the Gunners may have the perfect deterrent. While Laurent Koscielny will be expected to deal with Jonathan Walters, the big German’s height and presence in the heart of the home side’s back-four could well be the perfect weapon to nullify Crouch’s aerial presence. Stoke have scored just two goals on their travels to date and whether this record is extended or bettered could well rest on the duel between the two giants.

Gareth Bale vs Jason Lowe

While his season has yet to really kick off, Bale’s trickery has caused untold problems for opposing right-backs so far this season. Recent games against Liverpool and Wigan have seen both Martin Skrtel and Steve Gohouri dismissed due to their inability to cope with the Welshman’s trickery. Spurs arrive at beleaguered Blackburn in strong form and with Michel Salgado ruled out today with a hamstring problem, Jason Lowe is expected drop back from midfield and go head to head with Bale instead.

Blackburn look up against it. Steve Kean’s side have conceded 7 goals in their last two Ewood Park encounters and while there’s a chance Bale may even be fielded on the right wing, Harry Redknapp could look to utilise his speed on his favoured left side against Lowe’s inexperience in the full-back position.

Martin Petrov vs John O’Shea

With both sides just one point off the bottom, Bolton’s Reebok clash with Sunderland is crucial this Saturday. Neither have made the most impressive start to the new campaign, with just one win apiece in the last six games. The hosts will be hoping they’ve turned the corner, after last week’s win at Wigan stopped a run of six straight defeats and Owen Coyle will be looking for some wing magic from Martin Petrov to prove decisive- it’ll be up to John O’Shea to put the brakes on the Bulgarian.

The Black Cats produced a spirited performance at the Emirates last week but the 2-1 defeat means Sunderland have conceded 2 goals in four of their last five Premier League games. Petrov has so far proved Bolton’s chief creator and if the Trotters’ revival is to pick up speed, his showdown with O’Shea looks key to bringing home the three points.

    Right... team for this weekend:

    Krul (Vorm)
    Ward Bosingwa Simpson
    Silva Petrov Young VDV (Dyer)
    Suarez RVP Sturridge

Any transfer suggestions for next week?

Considering Walters for Young, but Man U have a cracking run in 2 GWs time.

Yeah think for the next 3 GWs it's decent, but tempted to try and get Walters + Aguero in next week for Young and RVP... then bring Rooney in for GW11.

You are going without any United coverage? I'm tempted to do Rooney -> Suarez except I have a fear of no United coverage for a few weeks.

Team so far. Deciding on which transfers to make...

    Given
    Simpson, Kompany, Enrique (Woodgate, Brown)
    Silva, Nani, Cabaye, Sinclair (Moses)
    Rooney, RVP, Graham

I was thinking doing Graham and Nani -> Suarez and Petrov (4 pt hit). Is this a good idea?

    Any other suggestions appreciated 🙂

Roonster is a striker but with Chicarito on the field he is playing in the Fabs position. He is coming deep to receive ball and is also defending. Even Fergie stated after this week CL game that in the second half he put him in more advance role. He said it on the press.

For anyone wondering about who to give the armband to:
Norwich have conceded 7 goals when playing away this season so Liverpool should be on for a goal or two.
Blackburn have conceded 10 goals at home so Spurs also seem likely to do quite well (with the apparent protests that are happening to try to get rid of Keane that could demoralise them further.)
As weird as it may seem, Stoke have also conceded 7 goals away this season, usually a number of goals in one game. So if Arsenal manage to crack the defence early 2 or 3 goals seem likely.
Finally, QPR have conceded 8 goals away this season however 6 of these came from the drubbing from Fulham. High potential for a big result for Chelsea if QPR aren't on form.

Petrov > Eagles imo. Not saying he's the best option tho.

Do you reckon VdV (bla, QPR) will outscore Nani (MCI, eve) in the next two GWs ?

Would you do Nani -> VdV if you had Rooney ? I'm a bit worried since Nani has scored in the last three matches vs City.

I am, also considering the same thing and I think I'm going to make that move.

Very close - Nani may not do anything against City and then EVE away is tough - I'd be more in favour of VDV just because of QPR at home. Essentially there are better MDF options for this GW

You can drag him onto your team to replace another player in fpl 😉

    I seriously can't believe i'm 0.1 short.

Dzeko, Arteta and Moses > Suarez, Ramsey and Bale was my dream moves. Now i can't do it.

Basically need to decide between Bale and Ramsey. I just really want this 2 week punt on Bale, i'm sorry i've asked for advice so many times.

I've just had this feeling about Bale but it seems stupid to transfer an Arsenal player out considering their fixture.

Adebayor, Dempsey and Simpson OR Suarez, R Taylor and 6.7 to spend on a midfielder?

Option 2 - Simpson is not guaranteed with Santon looming and Dempsey isn't there yet.

Right guys. Team for GW9 :-

    Given

    Simpson, Bosingwa, Enrique

    Jarvis, Nani, Silva, Petrov

    RVP, Rooney, Agbonlahor.

Subs:- Vorm, Brown, Ferguson, De Laet

Got one transfer left and 1.4 mil in bank after briging Enrique in for Mertesacker. Thinking of Suarez > Rooney or Silva > Gerrard or am I mad. Or should I leave it at that and still have 2 FT next week????

Transfers done, now who to Capt, thinking Bale or Adebayor.

Other candidates - Rooney, Augero or Nani.

    Don't have Suarez or RVP.

    Help please!
