A night of Carling Cup action saw Man City rack up the goals once again with a five star showing at Molineux. Luis Suarez picks up a knock at Stoke, Daniel Sturridge rescues Chelsea at Everton and Newcastle’s unbeaten run finally comes to an end. Here’s today’s Scribbles, folks…

Kenny Dalglish left out the likes of Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson for the Carling Cup trip to Stoke last night. The Reds boss partnered Luis Suarez with Andy Carroll up front and, as we reported earlier, Dalglish confirmed post-match that Suarez received a knock in Liverpool’s win. The Uruguayan was subbed off just seconds after scoring his second, and decisive, goal in the 2-1 win at the Britannia.

Jonathan Woodgate returned to the Stoke starting lineup after recovering from a calf problem. Tony Pulis named a strong starting XI, with Kenwyne Jones grabbing his chance of a start alongside Jonathan Walters by firing the home side ahead. Jermaine Pennant returned as a second half sub, having recovered from a hamstring strain.

Mama Sidibe’s injury problems deepened yesterday, with the Mali international stretched off in Stoke’s reserve game against Port Vale. Sidibe required oxygen for what appeared to be a knee injury and, having only just returned from a long-term Achilles injury, could be set for another spell on the sidelines.

Andre Villas-Boas fielded a largely second string side for Chelsea’s trip to Goodison. Branislav Ivanovic was, arguably, the only first-choice player on the field, though he played at right-back, with David Luiz and Alex paired at the heart of the back-four. Back-up keeper Ross Turnbull was sent off, allowing Petr Cech to come on and save a Leighton Baines penalty with his first contribution of the match. Daniel Sturridge again showed his importance to the Blues front line- on as a sub, he notched with winner just as it seemed the game was heading for spot-kicks.

David Moyes sent out a virtually full-strength team for the Chelsea game. Tim Cahill returned to the starting line-up, with Leon Osman dropping to the bench. Royston Drenthe was a threat throughout and it was noticeable he also appears to have a fair share of free-kicks- the Dutchman was unlucky to hit the bar with one particular effort but two yellow cards means he misses this weekend’s home clash with Man United.

Alan Pardew rang the changes for Newcastle’s trip to Blackburn and ultimately paid the price. The likes of Davide Santon, Hatem Ben Arfa and Sylvain Marveaux were all given starts at Ewood Park and Yohan Cabaye again demonstrated his eye for goal, scoring for the second game in succession as he dramatically took the tie to extra-time. Steven Taylor’s broken nose and Cheik Tiote’s knee problem meant Pardew had to do without two key players, though, and the 4-3 defeat saw his side defeated for the first time this season.

Blackburn’s beleaguered boss Steve Kean had something to smile about after his side upset the odds to send Newcastle crashing out. Scott Dann again missed out with a calf injury, meaning Gael Givet partnered Chris Samba in central defence. The pair proved pivotal to the final result, with Givet netting the winner right at the end of extra-time from a Samba assist. Yakub celebrated a rare start by converting a spot-kick and Morten Gamst Pederson continues to impress, firing home a free-kick to give Rovers a 3-2 lead.

Man City’s ruthless attack swept aside Wolves at Molineux in another devastating away display. With one eye on the league match against the same opponents this weekend and with the Champions League match in Villarreal also on the horizon, Roberto Mancini rested many key players. David Silva and Sergio Aguero failed to make the bench, while Mario Balotelli was an unused sub. Edin Dzeko, Samir Nasri and Adam Johnson ran riot, grabbing four of City’s five goals and Mancini singled out Johnson post-match:

I think Adam, because he is young can improve a lot. He needs to think in a different way. He can do this if he wants. My opinion is he has everything to become one of the top wingers. Adam is the only one winger we have in the team. He cannot play every three days, it is impossible, but if he wants to improve, he can have a lot of chances to play.

Mick McCarthy also rested a few of his main men for the City game but despite taking the lead, Wolves were dismantled by a ruthless performance. Nenad Milijas stunned Mancini’s side early on and Jamie O’Hara, on as a sub, grabbed his second goal in as many games and Big Mick was far from gloomy after the defeat:

That sounds crazy when you’ve just been beaten by five, but I was happy. We started well, and deserved the lead. The fact we didn’t hang on to the lead was nothing to do with defending badly. City are all top players. They won’t be made to work harder than they were tonight, that’s for sure.

McCarthy had some positive news on Steven Fletcher yesterday. The Scot has missed Wolves’ last two league games with a groin problem but has responded well to an injection and should return to training next week.

Spurs may be set to welcome back William Gallas and Steven Pienaar ahead of this weekend’s home game against QPR. The return of Gallas would be particularly significant to Harry Redknapp, given the club only have two fit centre-halves at this moment in time.

Whats my team looking like gents? I think it's pretty decent?

    Vorm (Given)
    Kompany Enrique Shawcross (Brown) (Simpson)
Silva (vc) Dyer Walters VDV (c) (Ramsey)
    Sturridge RVP Rooney

Not so sure about my bench....any advice?

Think Ramsey may be better shout for points then Dyer, though its prob a coin flip

Apart from that I think its spot on!

    Bosingwa > Walker or Assou-Ekotto

Assou-Ekottos cheaper but won't have as many attacking returns. Frees up an extra 0.5 though.

I'd hold fire with Bos for a few more GWs personally.

He wont, IMO, lose his place at RB and they do face Rovers & Wolves in the next 4 games + 3 of their next 4 being at home.

True, the bookmakers agree. But also consider if Ramsey will be involved in the points, if there is, let's say, just a single goal. And Bos is pretty attacking for a defender as well.

This is going to be somewhat geeky, but here goes... according to the bookmakers:

            Bosingwa:
            Cleansheet: 45%
            Score: 8%
Assist: 8% (assume similar to score)
            Chance of additional points: ~61%

            Ramsey:
            Score: 14%
Assist: 14% (assume similar to score)
            Cleansheet: 18%
            Chance of additional points: ~46%

Note: I know I didn't take into account assist, bonus, weighted by points etc.

So it would seem Bos has a better chance of additional points, does that make sense?

      It's ok.

I'd be concerned with having no United coverage.

I'd be thinking about how to get in Nani or Rooney possibley for Gerrard in the next few weeks.

Plus, you already have Ade and VDV. They don't consistently score big (like City).

Ade and Stevie out - Nani and Suarez.

      Or something

Rather have Ade than Suarez more clinical and less likely to assist the assist.
Need to find some Man U cover but not this week and yes Gerrard will have to make way but he gets two more weeks.
Somewhat hoping for United to hit a slump rather than bounce back and go without cover for them.
        Cheers for your feedback!

        Poor advice IMO
Leave it, looks good, Gerrard > Nani GW12 looks good
Adebayor + VDV average 16 points when playing together so no point getting rid of either.
Plus Suarez isnt doing anything to say he is better than Adebayor, especially considering mid-term fixtures, I have both and will do Suarez > RVP soon.

      I see your dilemma

      VDV at home WILL score.

Mata against Arsenal...hmmm. Could be low scoring although Arsenals defense may not show up again.

Suarez did show he can score away from home last night. But they may opt for one up front. Can see Carroll starting ahead of him. If he does play it will be a 20 min cameo.

I'd go mad and get VDV and another striker (for Suarez). Might be a points burn but could pay off handsomely!

Got VDV and Adebayor and could see both scoring. Thing is I could see Suarez banging a few in. Just needed a wee confidence boost and think he could hammer the goals in now.

Which defensice line to play my options are Begovic(Vorm)
    Wilkinson, Enrique, Bosingwa, Kompany, Simpson.

Currently have Bego, WIlk, Enrique,Kompany. I feel bad about having 2 stoke defenders, but I have a feeling that Swans home CS record will be broken this GW.

If you go Vorm I would go with Wilkinson Kompany and Bosingwa. If you go Begovic I would go with Enrique Kompany Bosingwa.

Stoke got either 4 or 5 clean sheets last year. Wouldn`t risk two of their defenders.

I think Chelsea are going to thump Arsenal. They are also at home and I reckon Villas Boas will have got the message accross not to lose concentration when in front.

Chelsea have been slack at the back once or twice but more often than not have let in silly goals when the game was over. That won`t continue imo.

          Liverpool have Skrtl and Carragher.

Okay I'm struggling on transfers for this week, here is my team:

    Given Vorm
Bosingwa Jones Simpson RTaylor De Laet
    Ramsey VDV MPetrov Silva Obertan
    Adebayor RVP Suarez

And which option do you think is best (0.5m in bank)

    A) Bosingwa > Shawcross, De Laet > K.Walker (4pt hit)

    B) Bosingwa > Shawcross or K.Walker, Obertan > Walters or other midfielder (4pt hit)

    C) No transfer

Need to play 2 from Cabaye, Ramsey and Moses. The remainder will be 1st sub in case Silva doesn't play.

Cabaye - on corners and some free kicks with R. Taylor. Scored 2 in 2 games but at Stoke and played 120mins yesterday.
Ramsey - playing advanced, almost behind RVP and getting a few assists but at Chelsea.
Moses - looks like Wigan's most dangerous player, playing 90mins and at home to Fulham who are poor away from home.

Not true. Having 2 spurs attacking players limits other top teams coverage, and if they didn't perform you'd be slightly screwed.

if any team doesn't perform you'd be screwed. what if they do perform? coverage is FPL OCD/perfectionism, people think it's necessary and it helps things look nice and tidy but as with any thing FPL the only thing that matters is points. aguero and silva, nani and rooney, lampard and sturridge, VDV and adebayor, van persie and ramsey, zamora and murphy, sinclair and graham - duos having a good burst of points together.
covering bases may mean you don't lose out on a thrashing but at the same time you'll never be there to exploit it either.

No coverage is the understanding that not every team will play well every week. Also, if Spurs play well, it's not guaranteed that VdV will be in the points which is doubly limiting. Having a reliable attacking player from each of the form teams is better in my book, personal preference.

surely you pick a player because of a combination of things like you like his fixtures, you think he'll be involved in their goals, you think his side will win all or most of the upcoming games and you think in general he's a goalscorer and or assister.
i buy player X because i think he'll score well over the next few weeks. i buy player Y because i think he'll score well over the next few weeks. for me this negates all the coverage stuff as sometimes X and Y will come from the same side, sometimes they wont.
not saying it's wrong, simply it's an approach to the game that i really don't subscribe to. any approach that cuts down your pool of players to pick from in some way i generally don't like.

    Vorm (Krul)
    Kompany Simpson Bosingwa (Ward DeLaet)
    VDV Dyer Young Silva (Petrov)
    RVP Suarez Sturridge

    Bank: 0.1

Which would you think is best?

A: DeLaet > Wilkinson (and play Wilkinson ahead of Simpson)
    B: Save transfer
    C: Something else

I'm thinking A because even next week I'll be struggling to get someone like Ramsey in.
Also, Kompany Ward Bosingwa Wilkinson would be good options and my mid + attack will also be strong.
