A quick-fire Scribbles on a busy afternoon sees Andy Carroll looking for more Liverpool starts, with his fitness on the up. Kenny Dalglish awaits news on his injured skipper’s ankle, Robin Van Persie talks goals and Steve Bruce hints at a change of formation….

Andy Carroll’s goal at the Hawthorns on Saturday evening means the Liverpool forward has scored and picked up maximum bonus points in each of his last two away games. The big-money buy from Newcastle admits he’s been doing a little extra in training in order to keep his place in the first-team and admitted he’s perhaps not been at the level expected:

I have been working hard to get my place and I think I have earned it. I played well last week and getting a goal as well this weekend was even better. It is disappointing when you are sitting on the bench but it only makes you work harder the next day in training to get your place back. I am working hard in training every day to get my fitness up. I can only say I am working my hardest to get back the way I was. I just need to keep getting my name on the starting sheet every week and see what happens from there.

Robin Van Persie’s extraordinary run of form shows no sign of letting up and, with a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon for a number of gameweeks, the Dutchman seems set to clock up the Fantasy points at an alarming rate. Speaking yesterday, the Arsenal skipper admitted he feels unstoppable right now:

I feel I can score every time I go out on to the pitch. For me it’s just the best feeling to have. It doesn’t really matter against who we play, we always create chances so that means I always have a go. Then it’s up to me to score. I’ll miss chances, but I’ll score them as well. To have that feeling is one of the best things in life.

Sunderland’s first-choice keeper Simone Mignolet has this morning undergone surgery on the broken nose that forced him from the field in Saturday’s home draw with Aston Villa. The Belgian suffered the injury after colliding with Emile Heskey and the club confirmed he will undergo further tests to establish the expected length of absence- Kieren Westwood looks set for a spell between the sticks for the Black Cats in the meantime.

Bruce suffered more defensive woes after John O’Shea suffered a hamstring injury in the Villa game. According to the Black Cats boss, it’s a recurrence of the same problem that plagued the Irishman in pre-season and looks almost certain to keep him out of Saturday’s visit to old club Man United, with Phil Bardsley a ready-made replacement.

Further news from the Stadium of Light concerns Sunderland’s recent change of formation. The Black Cats have moved to a 4-4-2 shape in recent games but Bruce warned he may alter the formation once again, with Connor Wickham looking like the one to drop out, going by Bruce’s comments:

Against Villa we can play two strikers and score two goals but in the game itself and the second half in particular Villa caused us all sorts of problems because they had that extra man in midfield. They had more of the ball, even though they haven’t done a lot with it. It denies us time on the ball and leads to frustration in the crowd. Connor can expect a decent run in the team and when we have unleashed him it has been at the right time. He is far better now than four months ago. Connor is physically a big, strong boy, but he is a boy and we have to protect him. There will be a time when he runs out of juice and at that stage he will have to come out but we are very, very pleased with him at the moment.

Liverpool are anxiously awaiting news on Steven Gerrard’s ankle problem after reports suggest an extended lay-off could possibly be on the cards. Having only just returned from a long-term groin problem, the skipper had started the homes games with Man United and Norwich before picking up what initially seemed an innocuous cut to his ankle in training ahead of the game at West Brom. The injury deteriorated significantly and, despite having the ankle drained, Gerrard awaits further prognosis on the problem.

Roberto Martinez has been scathing in his assessment of Fulham’s tackling after Momo Diame lasted just twelve minutes in Saturday’s home loss to the Cottagers. Diame had been in strong form, firing two goals in the previous four matches, but a couple of strong challenges saw him sidelined with an ankle injury.

The injury to Momo was really disappointing. He had two horrific challenges in the space of about 30 seconds, really early in the game and it was just something where I don’t think the referee gave any sort of protection. We’re hoping it’s just a twisted ankle, after a really bad tackle. He’ll have a scan to discover the real damage and if it’s a ligament tear as well. If it is, it’s going to be a really long period.

Rafael could be set to step up his recovery from a shoulder injury by returning to reserve action against Everton on Thursday. The right-back has failed to feature in the league so far for United and his availability would be a considerable boost for Sir Alex Ferguson, with Chris Smalling reportedly out for a month with a toe problem. United also today confirmed Darron Gibson is back in training after a metatarsal injury.

Oh dear, oh dear. So RVP rose Saturday night and at 133% is sure to rise tonight, second rise in three nights. 14 thousand transfers in on Sunday and Monday.

I missed the first rise hoping he wouldn't rise til after Tuesday's CL game, in case he got injured. That's blown out of the water. Shall I just go for it?

Not a biggy, but i knee jerked and took Suarez out for RVP... with the plan to insert Gerrard...

Anyone else a bit puzzled about bonus points this year? Perfect example, Scott Parker was quality last night, defo deserved the 3 BP. I know it now goes on shots, passes, tackles, etc but i don't think it's the right way to do it. I think last night the fair BP allocation should have been Parker 3, Bale 2, VDV 1. Although i did have VDV as (c).

My impression from reading an article about PPI before this season remains the same now: PPI just rewards goalscorers and assisters even more. It is literally a bonus for the FPL points people already have. The only time non-scoring stuff will come into play is when the number of goals is low, which it wasn't last night.

Assists actually don't seem to carry much weight, it's mostly about scoring, getting shots on target, keeping clean sheets and being on the winning side.

Pretty much in that order actually. i.e. a notional defender keeping a CS seems doomed to getting considerably less points than a notional forward getting a goal. Ultimately, what that means is that defenders only have a shout of BPs when the scores are low. I suppose it could be argued that is fair as the CS becomes more important then.

What does seem a bit absurd is I'm getting an impression that shots off target actually damage PPI. So if you scored with your single shot on target you better not continue taking risks attacking and missing the goal - your score would drop.

I preferred the old system, definitely, but there's nothing puzzling about them now - if the stats say you should get BPs, you get BPs. There should be enough data now for someone much less lazy than me to work out exactly how the PPI index works - any volunteers 😉

Definitely going into heavy territory here but a stats package may be very useful. SPSS for example, I wonder if you get all the data if you could run a regression analysis on it - automatic linear modeling for example - to pull out the equations involved.

Technically the index works off 6 factors: Winning Team, Minutes on Pitch, Goals, Assists, Clean Sheets and Performance (shots on/off target/passes/tackles/interceptions etc.)

But considering the fact that performance depends on plenty of factors itself, you'd have to do a whole bunch of similtaneous equations purely for that first.

Minutes on pitch would be tricky too.

I might give it a miss! SPSS is a good shout though

Right, this is totally theoretical and not rigorously thought through. But basically here you have an output (the PPI score) and the inputs (those 6 factors BLAPSD mentioned). I would think all you have to do is run Analyze > Regression > Automatic Linear Modelling and bang the 6 factors into "inputs". Put the PPI score into "target". See what you get.

              Worth a shot...

I started off hating the new BP system but am warming to it

Last season was subjective. One reporter trying to assess all 22 players. Read the 'marks out of 10 ratings' in the newspapers on a Monday morning and most disagree on who the Man of the Match was.

This season its more factual. Players who score goals, set up more goals or sometimes stop more goals are rewarded.

And thinking about it logically, isn't that why we put players in our team in the first place?

I think it's a better system as it's more objective yes. It seems entirely automated and free from observer bias. It has improved. The only complaint, as ever, is that if it's a "Player Performance Index" it should reward players who play well irrespective of position. I thought it was meant to act as a counterweight to existing scoring, not a multiplier of it.

Quite possible. But major clubs such as City are increasingly using maths-heavy analysis behind the scenes to identify promising players and evaluate existing players' performance. It may not ever be possible to reduce a player's performance to a single figure though. Or nice.

But my argument is we pick players we think will score goals or make assists yes? And if we get that right, the new BP system helps us.

Parker is a great player and was most peoples' MOM yday. But how many FF players had him in their side? Relatively few coz he doesn't tend to score that much, despite playing very well in his holding role. So its no biggie that the new BP system doesn't reward such performances

I just don't really see why the bonus system should automatically favor goal scorers. For me it should aim to provide some sort of weighted match result contribution. Obviously goals are a big part of that. In cases such as RVP or Hernandez over the weekend it makes sense, they were the difference between the two sides. But Parker had more to do with Spurs winning than Lennon did for example.

Yes it does a good job of helping goals and assisters. I just think there's a whole other side to football, the defensive side, which is rewarded for less by PPI and really by FPL as a whole.

So yes, in the context of what the FPL scoring system prizes - goals and assists - PPI makes sense.

In the context of who's important to a real football team, it doesn't seem to. Defensive mids are a complete no-no in both PPI and FPL; this is an example. But you wouldn't say they are any less important to a team. I was hoping a system like PPI would counterbalance the goal-hungry FPL scoring system to reflect this, but it doesn't.

Still, I understand it may not be possible or desirable to do that. At least the current system makes it easy to see where points come from.

Trouble is, how do you reward a defensive performance? Its easy to reward Lennon as he made an assist that led to a goal. But although Parker was brilliant, how can you actually be sure that performance stopped QPR winning 4-3? You can reward a goal-line clearance as it stopped a certain goal..but how can the PPI reward a good tackle 30 years out..when had the tackle not been won, the attack might have broken down anyway?

Yeah it's a problem of rating. Rating defending is a lot more vague than rating attacking. That's why FPL rewards the only concrete stat you can aim for as a defender - a clean sheet.

I think for the sake of transparency and simplicity, we're going to have to stick with the existing system until someone has a brainwave.

    Hey all,
RMT please. I played my WC this week already. Team looks like this:

    Al-Habi Vorm
    Richards Enrique Wilkinson McAuley Gabbidon
    Ramsey VDV Silva Moses Walters
    RVP Sturridge Rooney

Am slightly worried about defense and Moses. Would it be worth it to do Sturridge->Bentner and Gabbidon->Evans?
    Or any other suggestions?

    Cheers

Anyone else going into GW11 without any Man U cover?

I think I'm going to hang fire until GW13.

Swansea away I don't think will be a high scoring game in GW12 so just have to hope they don't rip Sunderland a new one.

However Bosingwa > Evans is tempting if Evans is a nailed on starter now.

Have a small regret getting richards instead of jones but only cos city didn't get a CS. i think I'll prob do the swap when city have liverpool away as they have norwich next which I can see richards being rested for and then two tough games. In terms of attacking I just don't trust who fergie will start so staying clear at the mo

I see RVP is still only at 14% ownership. That should surely increase to around 30/35% over the next few weeks, which would be about 500k transfers in! How high will his price go? My guess is >13m within 4 weeks

Depends how fast they transfer him in of course! Bear in mind we're pretty sure there's a 0.3m cap per week. Say the next 4 weeks are good for him, the ideal situation is 500,000 transfers in 28 days = ~18,000 transfers a day. Since the rise target is ~26,000, that is enough for a rise every 2 days which will hit the weekly cap of 0.3m a week. Potentially, that's 1.2m rise in a month taking him to 13.4m. It'll almost certainly be lower because of his actual performance and transfers being thrown away in rises.

Crap, international break will be two weeks but count as 1 GW so there's a max rise of 0.3m over those two weeks. Then you'd have to revise his maximum price down to 13.1m over the next 4 actual weeks. It's 13.4m over the next 4 GWs though.

Where did you hear about 0.3 being the max rise in a GW? AFAIK it's the biggest rise we've seen so far this season, but I've never heard of that before.

A few different reasons. Discussion of this on the FISO CTC thread, and I count several instances where players having already risen 0.3 in a GW failed to rise when their % was way over 100%, but rose the next day at the start of the next GW. That's exactly what happened to VDV on Friday night I think. I believe the same happened to Dzeko.

I think michael turner is more assured of games than either, and has nice enough fixtures? He's definitely on my watchlist. I wouldnt go for evans, a utd fan he makes my blood boil sometimes with the lapses in concentration. To be honest im not convinced in this school of thought that united are going to tighten up in future fixtures. The defence is going through a transition and DDG struggles to organise the backline to any real effect (understandably obvioously given his age and new to league). Personallu im holding off on going near utd defenders for a while yet

    Just looked at Drenthe's profile.

Anybody know why he didn't play vs Man United and why he's only played 90 minutes once this season?

He got a red card in CC and was banned from the united game, before that he was unfit.

1 game suspension (red card in carling cup midweek), and was taking part in a late pre-season to get him up to starting speed
