Once again the “Frisking” of the fixture list signals the start of the countdown towards another gameweek. The brief is simple – we take the fixtures, block off a month or so, and then tell you the teams with the strongest and weakest schedule in front of them. Newcastle and Demba Ba then proves us all wrong.

The Strong

Arsenal

Robin Van Persie is ablaze, Theo Walcott is hinting at consistency, Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta are providing the creative spark. In attacking terms, things couldn’t be much better for Arsene Wenger’s side. Fantasy managers surely need to get on board with at least one of these assets, as the fixture list suggests that the goals will go on flowing.

West Brom pay visit to the Emirates this weekend having looked wholly unconvincing against Liverpool on Saturday. The Gunners seem an obvious source of returns this weekend, and with Norwich, Fulham and Wigan to come after that, it’s hard to deny Van Persie’s recent claims that he feels he will score in every game. After last season’s run of goals – he has the pedigree to go on delivering and the fixtures to assist him.

Stoke

Monday night’s 3-1 defeat to Newcastle will serve as a setback but there’s no denying that Tony Pulis’ side have the fixtures in front of them to prompt a rapid recovery.

A trip to Bolton shouldn’t carry any fear for the Potters. Even with a questionable attacking threat away from home, they will fancy themselves against the obliging Bolton defence. Following that, both QPR and Blackburn visit the Britannia for matches that offer real promise for goals and clean sheets.

While Jon Walters continues to earn interest having been assigned spot-kick duties, it’s the defensive prospects that are likely to tempt Fantasy managers. Asmir Begovic and Ryan Shawcross have obvious appeal, although the sight of skipper Shawcross limping from the field early on in last night’s game will cause concern for Pulis and his Fantasy owners alike. We’re still waiting on news from the Stoke camp on that – we know it’s a muscle injury, but little else.

With Shawcross perhaps looking at a spell on the sidelines and Marc Wilson also nursing a knock from the Newcastle defeat, there is a need for caution. Stoke’s defence could be facing upheaval for the trip to Bolton, although the international break will then hopefully give Pulis the opportunity to nurse back his injury doubts.

Andy Wilkinson could benefit from the casualties; he seems to have cemented the right-back role and with Robert Huth perhaps needed to fill in alongside Jonathan Woodgate or Matt Upson, his start looks secure.

Everton

Leighton Baines is back in the game. Having promised so much going into the season and, having seen the departure of Mikel Arteta’s craft at set-pieces boost his Fantasy appeal, the fixture list has denied him the opportunity for big returns. This is now about to change with Everton set to embark on a kind run of opponents that must surely bring the foraging full-back to our attention.

A price drop to 7.8 in the Fantasy Premier League game will make him slightly more palatable, but it’s the fixtures that do most to convince. Once the Toffees get this weekend’s trip to Newcastle out of the way, they have four home matches in six with Wolves, Stoke, Norwich and Swansea all visiting Goodison.

Fleet-footed winger Royston Drenthe will also require monitoring over that spell as Everton at last come alive as a Fantasy prospect, having spent weeks off the radar.

Tottenham

Six wins in seven for Tottenham – like their North London rivals, the form is outstanding right now. Similarly, the fixture list suggests that there’s every chance for continued returns.

Those Fantasy managers mulling over whether to chase Rafael Van der Vaart’s recent avalanche of points should consider the cost of further hesitation. Short of injury, it’s difficult to conceive that the Dutchman, like Van Persie, will fail to continue delivering consistent returns in the month ahead.

Aston Villa, Bolton and Sunderland are the next three sides at White Hart Lane, whilst Harry Redknapp will take promising away form to West Brom and Norwich before gameweek 19. An away trip to Stoke in gameweek 15 looks tough but even the home encounter with Chelsea in gameweek 17 appears to promise attacking returns.

Also Consider…

Sunderland – Ignore the trip to Old Trafford this weekend and the Black Cats have a rather enviable little schedule in front of them, which should see Steve Bruce improve on their current league position. Three home games in four, with Fulham, Wigan and Blackburn at the Stadium of Light, will likely find them amongst our “Strong” selection next week as plans for investment are hatched.

Bolton – Owen Coyle’s side are floundering but the Trotters’ boss can at least take comfort from the upcoming fixture list and start plotting a route to mid-table. Three Reebok encounters in the next five bring Stoke, Everton and Villa to their door – all matches that could fetch goals to boost the Fantasy reputation of Martin Petrov and Chris Eagles that little bit more.

Man United – While Fantasy managers start to fidget uncomfortably at the prospect of further blanks from Wayne Rooney and Nani, the fixture list presents a reason to show patience. Three Old Trafford encounters in the next five offer Alex Ferguson’s men the opportunity to build on the 1-0 win at Goodison. It might just be worth holding tight to their big assets and assess them again following the weekend clash with Sunderland.

The Weak

Newcastle

Monday’s superb victory at Stoke offered good indication of just how far Newcastle have come. The Magpies are in dreamland, sitting snugly on the tail of the Manchester clubs, with Alan Pardew fighting to stave off talk of European football. However, while the form and league placing is outstanding, we’ve every reason to show caution for the month ahead given Newcastle’s schedule.

As we stressed in last week’s “Frisking”, we have our doubts that the Magpies can carry resolute defensive form into November. Everton will test the St James’ Park rearguard this weekend and, after the break, Pardew takes his side to City and United, before a home clash with Chelsea – clean sheets look very unlikely on that run.

As for Demba Ba, there’s little doubt that he presents outstanding value but, following the Everton game, he will surely find it difficult to further his reputation given the opposition in front of him. It’s another classic form versus fixtures scenario.

Fulham

Martin Jol’s side continue to frustrate. There’s Fantasy talent in their ranks but, so far, only Clint Dempsey has even hinted at delivering consistent returns. The 2-0 win at Wigan last time out may give Jol something to build upon but the Dutchman now takes his side into a tricky four-game run, starting with the visit of in-form Tottenham this weekend.

Trips to Sunderland and Arsenal then follow – neither of which appear to offer too much promise. That is then followed by a home encounter with Liverpool to kick off December. All in all, the prospects of Fulham actually stringing together some positive results and decent Fantasy returns remain fairly bleak.

Also be wary of…

Liverpool – Jose Enrique is picking up investment this week but, in the short-term, his potential may be limited to attacking thrusts. Fail to keep a clean sheet against the Swans and we don’t see defensive returns for a while with Chelsea, City and a trip to Fulham to follow.

Norwich – Fantasy managers clinging to cheap defensive options within Paul Lambert’s squad have little cause for optimism in the coming weeks. The gameweek 13 home clash with QPR looks the best prospect, but trips to Villa Park and City, with Arsenal at Carrow Road in gameweek 12, creates a testing schedule.

Swansea – The Swans rely on home displays to maintain their form and league placing but, with United at the Liberty next, this could be a difficult month for Brendan Rodgers’s side. Trips to Liverpool this weekend, and Blackburn in gameweek 14, will likely mean that Swansea will need to find rewards from the gameweek 13 home clash with Villa.

Aston Villa – Alex McLeish’s outfit also have a daunting November ahead of them. This weekend’s visit of Norwich looks vital; slip up there and Villa then have testing trips to Tottenham and Swansea, followed by a home clash with United.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Mentioned this the other day and interested in other opinions.

It seems a lot of people are starting to think of changing up their keepers. I am wondering if a change of tactic could be in order. So far people have looked at keepers that rotate well. What about if we went for a keeper in a good team your are prepared to play every match eg Hart and then someone like Ruddy who can be benched every game.

I am thinking of Getting De Gea with Ruddy if I play my wildcard after GW11. United have an awesome run and he is cheaper than Vidic and Evra who are the only nailed on starters in defense. De Gea also makes a lot of saves so the odd BP will come around. United have also found a new defensive resolve after the thrashing from City. Also I believe clean sheets might start to come back especially with winter weather approaching. I don’t think this goal scoring intensity can last forever.

Also as an example Hart last year only got 10 less points than Tevez not bad for almost half the price.
At the start of the season I had 10m invested in two 5m goalies, De Gea/Ruddy would only have been 0.5more. The prices have changed a little but I think it is a sound option

    Thoughts?

I reckon it's a decent move, so long as your cheap GK plays (which Ruddy does). It's something I'm considering also. Given & Dunne -> De Gea & N Taylor is a possible move for me next week. Only issue I have is it prevents the Kun -> Rooney transfer the week after.

Yeah its kind of tough spending money on an expensive goalie but I think the luck of cheaper goalies such as vorm and krul may be coming to an end, can't see them maintaining clean sheet form all season but I can see United finding a new defensive resolve. Would also save the hassle of constantly rotating keepers and getting it wrong. N Taylor for you will be having a tough run comming up so I would look to hold that off till things clear up a bit, maybe McAuley is a good option?

Yeah you could be right. Looking at my defenders, I'll probably be benching whoever I bring in for GW12 and 13 as Wilkinson/Woodgate have QPR/BLA and Brown has FUL/WIG. Ideally would want the new defender to cover when Stoke have poor fixtures (GW14,15,17). Neither Macauley or N Taylor do this, but can't see any better options for 4.3m or less....any ideas?

when you have 5 defenders it shouldn't be too hard to find 3 that have reasonable fixtures, I wouldn't worry too much unless you have 2 defenders from the same team

Problem if I do that is then I can't afford De Gea. Losing Dunne is the only way to fund getting De Gea (ie the 2 x Stoke defenders reamain). Guess I could lose Woodgate in GW14 for another cheapie to combat this though

I dont mind this strategy at all. De Gea defo the obvious choice if u were going to employ this tactic.
I myself have had Vorm and Kenny since week 4 (my wildcard after a shocking start to the season) and they still have good fixtures when rotated, apart from this week, until gameweek 19.

Yeah I havn't played my WC yet so I am looking to change things up. Would have liked to be on the Krul and Vorm bandwagon but its hard to justify spending transfers on goalies. This is my chance now with Given and Schwarzer having terrible fixtures coming up. Just not to keen on getting in cheap goalies who have bad fixtures coming up as well, whereas United have a great run coming up and no serious long term defensive options are available due to rotation

I agree with De Gea, and overall defensive tact change in united. Its funny as im thinking of doing the exact same, De Gea and ruddy would then be my keepers. I also think De Gea is a fantastic keeper to have and well worth the price tag really, more so come mid season, he'll be sitting at the top or top 5 keepers end of season :-).

I am hoping to be more ambitious than that and believe he will be top 2 or 3, otherwise it might not be worth it. I always found the rotating keeper option to be a bit hit and miss, it sounds good in logic when looking ahead but not always good in reality

Yeah true, one main keeper should be respectively good in all situations and fixtures, at the moment i have given and ruddy, need to ship given out tho, he's not this seasons shiner i once thought he might be, villa are weak at the back and he continues to conceed, de gea will be the way i go in future when i get him in. Yeah top 2 or 3 seems more realistic actually come end of season 🙂

I see where you're coming from. Question: How many bonus points/ extra save points do you see coming from De Gea? imo it just aint worth it. Keepers are comletely overlooked with this BP system and the 2 million or so cheapies that you can save by going with two cheap keepers that rotate well, For a few extra clean sheets you're spending the difference between a Agbonlahor > Suarez, or a Downing > VDV.

Having Dyer and Sinclair means that Dyer is never going to get a run. Just seems a little pointless to me. You have lots of money in defense. Your midfield needs a bit of work. I'd wildcard after this week I think with this team. So if you want RVP in this week id get rid of Dzeko and then make up the money with Kompany out for a cheapo.
This is only if you are going to wildcard next week.

Yep i do agree with you, although at £4.5m it's not much of a risk. Plus he's very unlikely to come on for a dreaded 1 pointer so as long as your bench is decent (i.e not filled with the Shane Ferguson's of this world!) then it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Guess that's decent logic, cheers. My defence is already one big rotation threat anyway though....

                Kompany, Bosingwa, Wilkinson, Simpson, Boyata.

Saying that, i know i'll still end up getting Evans. If only i knew Wilkinson and Simpson were going to be definate starters for a while, i can just leave the injured Boyata there for a while then without any worry.

Duffman, in regards to your quandry before- I'm facing a similar decision, in a way: I have Kompany and Bosingwa, and thinking about transferring one of them for Jones/Evans. Kompany would be an obvious choice as he's suspended, but like you say, it's nice to have a City defender. I'm actually leaning towards Bosingwa out, Jones in, but I actually think Evans is a good shout too.

For this week I'd do De Laet->Evans, and think about Bosingwa->a city defender next week. City have conceded a few away from home, and will miss Kompany this week too. I fancy they'll batter QPR but leak a goal somewhere in the process.

If I was you I'd keep Kompany for this week, its only one game he's going to miss. I would do Bosingwa to Jones but as I said it would be nice to wait and see if Evans is nailed on first since he's 1.5 milion cheaper.
Yeah I think I will do De Laet > Evans this week. At 4.5 he's not too much of a gamble. A City defender will have to wait though since I've got other moves I want to make.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking- and it would cost me more to buy back into the City defence if I sold him now.

I may actually do Bos->Jones this week and think about getting Evans in too in a couple of weeks if he seems nailed on. Even if he misses one in every 3 or 4 games it's still a bit of a bargain for a United defender- as long as you have decent back-up- and I can see a fair few sheets for them between now and Christmas.

Same dilemma for me. Sinclair seems the obvious choice, but Swansea being poor away and Wolves leaking goals everywhere could mean Moses outscores him this week. 70:30 in favour of playing Sinclair atm purely due to set pieces.

Well only in the Everton game was he given a specific midfield role, he dropped into midfield after Evans was sent off against City but only because of that.

In every other game he was in his usual deep-lying striker position, he always runs back and defends anyway. His attacking threat is looking reduced these last few games though, and I think Hernandez is due a run of goals now. I might get him in for Sturridge.

    Hiya lads,
thinking about getting De Gea as some ma have seen from 'Ryan's' post on previous page, however, i have Given as main keeper this weekend, reckon its best to stick with him just for this week and save a 4 pt hit or get him in now and use the free transfer elsewhere next week? although getting de gea in for given will leave me with zero in the bank. 🙂

Hmm i never really thought about evans really Kostja, to be honest, i'm a united fan, and i just hate evans, i dont rate him as a good player at all, and feel if there's anyone that would let united defence down it's him, i've always had a dislike for him and his play really, so De Gea would be the way for me really, he'll outscore evans even if he kjust keeps clean sheets, evans is a yellow (and red) card magnet 🙂

Yeah thats true, very cheap entry into a great united team, but he is just not worth the trouble in my opinion, even if he pulls out a blinder with 3 or 4 straight clean sheets, he'll still manage to clog it with a yellow card, and as i say, be the reason we conceed or a free kick that turns into a goal. Just not worth the trouble or hype. However, being the nature of fpl, i could always be wrong 🙂

I have Given at the moment and to free up the cash I need to downgrade BAE -->5.2M defender or Sturridge--->5.9Forward. I may look to do this after international break though as I taken a -4 this week. Thoughts on who to downgrade?

Yeah i agree, i shall also keep with Given this week i feel. Hmm i have BAE and will hold for as long as i can, i liek the guy in my team, but to downgrade i think wilkinson is a great pick with fixtures coming up, whether they'll function the same without shawcross is yet to be seen if he's out for a couple with a groin injury, but still with stoke at brittania wilkinson is a great pick, and you save the 0.2 in the process :-).

I am planning to do De Leat to Wilkinson when I have no other pressing issues. McAuley is other option, but I dont trust WBA defence. I just got BAE as part of my -4 so I want to keep him.

Graham becomes a good option again GW13. So Sturridge to Graham may be good way to fund it.

Yeah sturridge to Graham would almost be an ideal way to fund it as his GW13 comes good at that time,. Yeah you wanan keep BAE, has jsut as much attacking/ point potential as walker and at 0.5 less, hold on for as long as poss imo. i wouldn't trust WBA defence either, always seem to conceed, and not solid enough by no means.

i also plan to bring in wilkinson over the int. break, as other matters in my team seem to have been resolved with my mammoth 12 point hit last week, all for long term to get me out of a messy team, and has paid off massively this week so onwards and upwards i hope. De Gea is definitely coming in after the in.break, jsut hope i score highly this GW to acommodate bringing both de gea and wilko in 🙂

I'm certainly thinking Everton, with fixtures and a possible DGW on the horizon. Had Baines for the first five but he hasn't dropped enough to get him back. Thinking Murphy to Drenthe this week or Given to Howard the next. Who knows, maybe both

Yeah I am definitely getting a couple of everton players but its hard to know who would be a good option. I would like to see Drenthe start a few games before I think about getting him in though

Yeah you are right. I think Howard yes, but maybe Sess for Murphy and both next week.

Looks good. Bold captain choice but could well pay off.

Stoke usually aren't good with injury news. So it will be vague IMO, But is not that bad in my opinion. If he was having something like a surgery we should know by know, Having in mind the international brake, plenty of time for him to recover.

      Hoho, very good.

Pretty dire away record all season in fact- two victories (Sunderland and Bolton, not including the Everton game 'cos it needed extra time) and one clean sheet away from home in all competitions, if I'm not mistaken.

Did you know that Graham Carr, the scout praised in that article, is Alan Carr's dad?

P.S. do you know where the word "reem" comes from? Passed me by, that one, but I always see people using it.

Really 😯 Didn't know that at all

Yep, it comes from the semi-reality tv show "The only way is Essex" used by a character called Joey in it.

        Mean's to be cool/really good e.t.c
