Arsene Wenger hails Mikel Arteta’s importance to his new-look Arsenal, Kenny Dalglish talks up fit-again Daniel Agger, while Phil Jagielka admits morale in the Everton camp is far from ideal right now after five defeats in the last six. Here’s some evening Scribbles for you, folks…

Arsene Wenger has lauded the recent performances of Mikel Arteta as the Spaniard starts to settle into life at Arsenal. An assist last week followed by a goal at home to West Brom has been Arteta’s most consistent Fantasy streak since moving to the Emirates in late August and Wenger is full of praise for the way the former Everton player plays a key part in his side’s possession game:

He is an important player for our team. He is really a player between Song and Ramsey or Rosicky and that gives us continuity. When we need to keep the ball he can achieve that – Jack [Wilshere] can do that as well. With Jack missing he is really a player who allows you to keep the ball when it is needed. He is adapting to our game.

Yohan Cabaye is due to undergo tests after being subbed off with a groin problem in the first half of Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday. With Cheik Tiote also currently injured, Alan Pardew’s side are fretting over the Frenchman’s possible absence as they face the possibility of squaring up to (mci, mun, CHE) with their first-choice central midfield pairing currently both doubts. With the international break now upon us, Cabaye has a fortnight to recover but admitted post-match:

I felt slight pain in my left adductor muscle. I don’t know how serious it is, but I will have a scan on Tuesday in Paris.

If there’s a positive for Kenny Dalglish to take from Liverpool’s goalless draw against Swansea, it’s the fact his side recorded a second clean sheet in a row for the first time this season. It may very well be coincidental that Jamie Carragher missed both matches, as Daniel Agger slotted in alongside Martin Skrtel at the heart of the back-four, but Dalglish’s thoughts on the Dane perhaps suggest a more permanent role, providing he keeps free of injury:

Daniel’s a fantastic player and he’s probably as good as anyone else in his position in the Barclays Premier League. He’s comfortable in possession and he’s a very good defender as well. He’s a top defender, a top player. He played left-back for us at Stoke as well and did very well. It’s great to have him back and I hope his fitness remains as it is for a long time.

The FA have today charged Wigan’s Antolin Alcaraz with an alleged spitting incident during Sunday’s game at Wolves. The Paraguayan was involved in an alteration with Richard Stearman and if found guilty, would face a three-match suspension.

Alex McLeish is hoping the international break will allow Stiliyan Petrov time to recover after the midfielder was subbed off in Saturday’s win over Norwich with a hamstring problem. With Bulgaria having no fixtures over the fortnight, Petrov will be handled with care by Villa ahead of the gameweek twelve trip to Spurs, particularly with fit-again Jermain Jenas unavailable for the game due to terms of his loan deal. Big Eck explained:

He felt a little niggle in his hamstring. He thinks he caught it just in time. We’ll get him on the treatment table. He couldn’t go on. He would have become a liability in midfield for us, so we needed to get some freshness on.

McLeish also revealed Emile Heskey is battling an on-going Achilles complaint that is preventing the player from managing the full ninety minutes in any game right now. Heskey was subbed off just after the hour mark at the weekend as Villa look to manage the problem.

Connor Wickham is today having scans on his injured knee after being stretchered off at Old Trafford on Saturday. The youngster lasted no more than a couple of minutes before injury struck, though as yet the club have offered no further prognosis. Steve Bruce will definitely be without Seb Larsson for the gameweek twelve home game against Fulham- the Swede picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and the club have officially confirmed he will miss the match.

Owen Hargreaves is edging closer to a return from injury, according to Man City coach David Platt. The midfielder has played just fourteen minutes of the club’s league campaign this term and is currently recovering from a calf problem.

Everton’s Phil Jagielka has admitted morale inside the camp is low after a run of games that has seen the Toffees pick up just three points from a possible eighteen. Speaking to the Daily Express, the centre-half conceded David Moyes has his work cut out right now:

Morale is not good. I’d be lying if I said we were all high-fiving each other in the changing room. We’re all absolutely gutted, managers and coaches included. I don’t think we would have expected to have got so few points from this run. That’s five out of six we’ve lost. We’ve been in games, at least until 70 or 80 minutes, and in the past we might have nicked a draw or a win. The manager has got a hard job to do now in terms of getting confidence and morale back up.

Martin Jol received some bad and good news on the injury front today. Early reports suggest Zdenek Grygera could be sidelined for the rest of the season with knee ligament damage sustained in yesterday’s home loss to Spurs, while Andy Johnson is expected to recover from an ankle knock for the gameweek twelve trip to Sunderland.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Rooney vs Bolton (Rooney 3 goals) vs Rooney vs Sunderland (Rooney 0 goals).

Not a huge difference, with all this talk of his new defensive responsibilities and positioning, he passed the ball from the first third of the pitch approximately 8% more than he did in the Bolton game (9% in Bolton game, 17% in Sunderland game).

In the middle third of the pitch, Rooney passed 57% of his passes from the middle third of the pitch against Sunderland in comparison with exactly the same percentage in the Bolton game, so no change in midfield then.

In the final third, Rooney passed for 26% against Sunderland in comparison with 36% at Bolton earlier in the season.

So, to conclude, and I appreciate this is not an average position chart, but Rooney passed only 10% less in the Sunderland game from the final third of the pitch. I think that this highlights United's ineptitude going forward rather than Rooney's temporary re-positioning, he had three efforts on goal, two on target and one off target, more than Nani/Hernandez.

Looking at the average position indicator of Bolton:

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=318302&cc=5901

    and then Sunderland:

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=318066&cc=5901

It is clear that this new "midfield role" is not much different from where he has played in the past, only now there is more of an impetus on him to return to United's half to defend.

I am not fearful for Rooney's returns, but I think it has more to do with United misfiring than the man himself.

I expect Rooney to be back upfront anyway by GW13 which is when I'm likely to bring him in for Suarez.

Smashing stuff Johnny Unitas. Really appreciate the effort made here.

It may not be that important as I believe he will be restored up top and Rooney was already nailed on in my WC team but this definitely helps make my decision a little easier.

I'd agree with the last sentence in particular and the reference to United misfiring as a team in comparison to how they started the season. In the Bolton game, they had Young and Nani bombing down the flanks, with Cleverly and Anderson neat and tidy in the middle. Losing Cleverly and Young to injury was a blow and Nani has had a dip in form.

Get those three back on the pitch and United's creativity and movement will increase considerably, and with it Rooney's potential to score heavily in FPL terms.

Excellent post Johnny. Unfortunately this site doesn't deserve, nor does it get, many quality posts like this one. The comment format at present just doesn't lend itself to the hard work and research that goes into making such a post. 3 or 4 comments, then 20 minutes later its lost in the ether never to be read again, a big, big shame as it contains pertinent, constructive information. I write similarly constructed articles, but I post them on a site where people can actually read them.

      Drenthe

Rodwell and Baines may pick up something, but if they're going to do well then Drenthe will be involved.

I'm tempted to bring in Drenthe, due to him being a differential, takes FKs and its rumoured that the DGW maybe in GW14, so that'll be a nice bonus.

Finally played my WC, couldn't resist anymore and defence is a mess.

At this moment I've come up with the following options:

    1)
    Vorm - Kenny
    Jones - Wilkinson - Enrique - Brown - Rangel
    Sessegon - Silva - VDV - Drenthe - Allen
    VP - Rooney - Adebayor / Dzeko

    2)
    Vorm - Ruddy
    Evans - Wilkinson - Simpson - Brown - N Taylor
    Sessegon - Silva - VDV - Drenthe - Allen
    VP - Rooney - Aguero

1 is a little more balanced, has a better defence and would offer more flexibility. 2 would save me a lot of worries every gw whether Aguero would go crazy or not.

    What do you think guys?

      2) Jones seems more nailed on than Evans (I think)

Aguero vs Dzeko - with city forwards you are going to have to accept that one week Aguero will score higher than Dzeko and vice versa.

I would go for 1. Having Evans in your defence is suicidal and like having a Ferguson IMO.

    Begovic (Vorm)
    Kompany, Emrique, Vidic (SImpson, Rangel)
    VDV, Silva, Bale, Drenthe (Formica)
    RVP, Ba, Agbonlahor

Anything I should change or just stick with it?

Well part 1 of my planned transfers is almost sorted: Petrov > Drenthe.

Now for part 2: Who to bring in for Bosingwa as a cheap/budget defender to go with Kompany, Jones, Simpson and Ward(Ward will be the next to go).

I had Wilkinson in mind but Stoke have been a bit out of sorts in defence, even now starting to concede at home. There's McAuley @ WBA but they aren't keeping CS either.

Wes Brown at 4.5 - rotates home and away perfectly with Simpson (although Simpson has bad fixtures coming up), Bruce is a defensive manager, nice fixtures.

West Brom's form isn't too bad is it? I've got Olsson instead of McAuley, just because I don't rate McAuley as a prem player, and I'll be getting Hibbert in for the next few GWs

This is probably a shot in the dark but does anyone think that Bale's returns are due to the absence of Harry and Bale's current FPL returns are bcuz of this temporary man in charge of tottenham?

Nah. It's probably more to do with him getting his confidence and fitness back + if you look at the positions he was taking up yesterday, he's clearly been given license to get right in the box during attacks. Ade was dropping really quite deep yesterday, leaving Bale up top. I think Bale is a really good option FPL-wise for the next 6 weeks or so.

Ade is a pain in the arse. I've got him in and can't get rid of him with the fixtures we've got. He's capable of a massive score, but he's not playing well at the moment. Defoe should really get his chance to play. I reckon Ade's probably got something in his contract saying he has to play though.

      Unrelated IMO.

The more likely explanation is the return to form of Lennon. I say return to form, but he (Lennon) is actually playing a more varied game now. Rather than trying to skin the fullback on the outside all the time, he is now coming inside quite a lot and linking up with Bale. Lennon's presence also makes doubling up on Bale harder.

I am thinking of going Bale and VDV for the next few game weeks.

.1 over budget but I should be able to make a bit of profit on a double riser like Bale.

I can’t decide whether to swap Bos for a big bucks defender like Vermaelen, Jones or Santos, go for a cheapie like Olsson or McAuley or get Jagielka or Hibbert for Everton coverage? Defence currently is Bos, Richards, Enrique, S.Taylor, Brown (have 1.1M in the bank)

I think Hibbert is a good bet, or Jagielka.

Everton look good up until around GW 23, where they have Man City and Chelsea within 3 Gameweeks. Before that it's Arsenal away and the rest are bottom half teams, mainly at home

Cheers, I have got some Everton coverage with Drenthe, may do Given to Howard (as he rotates well with Vorm) and then get a diff. defender, if I don't get Howard I'll probably get in an Everton defender (also Jagielka's price will drop before Bos's which is a plus!)

cheapies has been the way this season and in recent years. Utd have form and fixtures in DF but Jones is expensive and a rotation risk.

Hey guys I know its early but can I get your advice on this lot? 🙂

    Vorm - Ruddy
    Kompany - N Taylor (swa) - R Taylor - Walker - Evans
    Sinclair - Eagles - VDV - Silva - Murphy
    RVP - Rooney - Sturridge

    0.2 moneys

    I'm thinking somethin like:
    Murphy > Sessegnon
    Sturridge > ?
    Rooney > ? Dzeko?

    Cheers 🙂

      Some thoughts:

Ruddy - does he give you rotation with Vorm and some reasonable chance of c.s.? Would be looking for more reliability from a 4.5 gk.

Defence - quite a nice balance. Would Hibbert be a better option than Walker and save a bit of cash?

Personally wouldn't have Sinclair and Murphy. Is a UTD midfielder now something of a requirement?

My fwd line and one I'm sticking with as I don't see anything better at the moment.

should i use my wildcard? already did a 4 pt hit to do Bosingwa and Petrov and aguero out for wilko and ramsey and rvp on saturday with the intention of using wildcard incase of injuries to the players i brought in.. tempted to use it now however,. fallin badly in my minileagues.. team after -4 is
    Vorm Ruddy
    Kompany Enrique Simpson Wilko Brown
    Silva VDV Nani Ramsey Moses
    RVP Suarez Sturridge
    0.1
would use it to get rid of Suarez Nani Brown Moses for Rooney and 3 other undecided.. will catch price rises too,, so do i or leave team as is and use wildcard only if injuries crop up?
