The phrase โ€œmust-haveโ€ is far too often overused when measuring the merits of Fantasy prospects.Sometimes it can take just a brief burst of form to get certain bandwagons up and running; a hat-trick here and a double there and managers are scrambling to juggle budgets in order to accommodate the latest flavour of the month.

There have been contenders this season, no doubt. Wayne Rooney flew out the traps, firing 9 goals in his first five gameweeks, while over in the blue half of Manchester, Sergio Aguero was adjusting to life at the Etihad seamlessly following his summer move from Atletico Madrid. The Argentine bagged 8 goals over the same period as Cityโ€™s new attacking outlook took the top-flight by storm.

Robin Van Persie was sluggish in comparison. Five games in and the Dutchman has found the net just once. In retrospect, those stats read more like an absurd anomaly now, a brief stain in an otherwise immaculate record that shows no sign of letting up.

There was something of an inevitability about todayโ€™s trip to Carrow Road. Can we really raise an eyebrow at a brace, with the maximum bonus surely certain to follow? Paul Lambertโ€™s Norwich can take solace in the fact they are simply another in a long line of opponents put to the sword by an extraordinary scoring spree that has seen Van Persie find the net 12 times in the last seven gameweeks as the new-look Arsenal storm up the table.

This article is no more than a homage to you then, RVP. A thankyou from Fantasy managers who seem to have finally found their new Cristiano Ronaldo. Back in 2007/08, the Man United man grabbed 31 goals in 34 games and was, arguably, the last real must-have. Good for the armband most weeks, almost always guaranteed to produce the points.

Since the start of this calendar year, in a run of 28 league games stretching back to a trip to St Andrews on New Yearโ€™s day, Van Persie has now scored a total of 31 goals. The likes of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri may be gone but the goals are far from drying up- whether itโ€™s Chelsea away or Bolton at home, Van Persie steamrollers teams regardless. A Fantasy captain for every occasion, a real Robin relentless.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Given the number of people that would've captained RvP or Aguero, means one player is getting half that.

      Aguero over Rooney

I'm a United fan and I wouldn't trust our players for consistency at this point in time. Hernandez is probably a better bet than Rooney.

And Rooney is out of form. He blows hot and cold. I'd rather Aguero who does more in a 20 min cameo than Rooney seems to be doing in 90 minutes.

Alternatively Lampard and Balotelli for some differentials.

      VDV - 1 goal & 3 baps

Hernandez will certainly be getting 2 or 3 though imo..

Think it's time to take Aguero out, I know he scored today, but he can't justify 11 mil proce tag, and I have Silva for City attacking coverage. Am gonna replace Tiote with Larsson and have Westwood and Brown, so Bendybus is out. Any ideas. Was thinking Studge, but he's not performing. Long looks a decent shout, can always bench him v Spurs.

I totally despair with United midfeild options.

I was brought up with a United team who had an embitterment of riches in the midfeild dept. But Fergie really needs to sort out the the center of the park. A lot of teams are looking at our midfeild and think they can have a go and are dominating us.

Cleverley has great potential but we are desperate for a box to box midfeilder.

Carrick, Park, Fletcher, Anderson…..are all very average at best. I can’t believe Carrick has been there as long as he has, I have never rated him. He’s stuck with Anderson for longer than he should, he simply is not delivering and doesn’t look like he ever will. Park and Fletcher are good players on their day but bringing energy to game is not enough.

The engine room is what makes or breaks a team. I said last year that winning the league and getting to the champions league final stands as one of Fergies greatest achievements given the squad he had.

Our early season form work only masked over a weaknesses that has been hanging over us for a number of year, we really need to sort it out or we’re going to seriously fall behind.

Trouble with Carrick is he still does have a tendance to make costly errors- but I do think that part of that comes from him having to do so much of our midfield passing work.

With a fully fit mid you can choose from Nani, Young, Valencia (in position), Cleverley, Park (good attacking and pressing qualities, an asset to the side) and increasingly Jones, who actually looks like his natural position is box-to-box midfielder. I think he's too good for CB or RB, and should be played as a DM with license to roam. It's not that bad. I think the dream would be signing Sneijder in January or something, which isn't impossible.

In recent United matches and for England too, take the Sweden game. He can make the tackles at the back and most notably (and few others in England are doing this right now) drive forward with runs from deep to set up or shoot. In today's match against Swansea he made such a run that ended with him hitting the post late on. He also made assists in the Arsenal game I believe, despite nominally being a defender. It's evident he is if anything one of the best examples of a box-to-boxer in the PL, it's just that we haven't got used to the idea of him as one and it's only 1/3-way through the season.

I'm not saying he'll never be one, as he's still young, but in the games I've seen him play there (against liverpool and for a while against City) he hasn't looked too comfortable. IMO he'd be far better deployed at RB or CB...

Maybe give him time. But look at his positional sense, his vision, his touch, passing and dribbling! He shouldn't be wasted right at the back of the pitch...

Unfortunately you can't give Ferguson credit for 'doing it with the squad he had' since being in charge for the last 25 years, its more the 'squad he made'.

There's an argument that (depending on your playstyle) you don't need great centre mids as that area gets crowded out anyway. If you play tika taka (or whatever you call it) then you need a Cesc, Xavi, Iniesta type player - but as Arsenal and United are proving you actually need wingers putting the ball towards great strikers. Even Barcelona and Spain are actually quite dependent on their wide players to make their plan work (Pedro and Messi - players who can stretch the defence).

Good point that you only need the players your style demands (if the style works). I think the trap United are in is that their style (wings, fast, often long passing, pace) does work almost everywhere, except at the very highest level to beat the likes of Barcelona. And this year my interpretation of United's early playing style was an attempt to produce their own tiki-taka - see Nani's equalizer against City in the Community Shield for an example which was a classic team goal. Unfortunately, if you don't have the personal (Cleverley, Anderson injured and no backup) it won't work. And it may not even work so well in the PL.

        SAF is in a bind.

United don't have the same relentless patience to break teams down that Barcelona do. And part of the reason is that they lack enough technically gifted players to retain possession and string together passes against locked defences. You need those players against the very best like Barcelona, because possession is also a form of defence, as practised by Barcelona - no-one can score if you have the ball. Give it away to them with any sort of regularity and you get owned.

Can't really disagree with what you've said.

But considering Cleverly is injured, I'd say we do have the right CM then. Players like that are difficult to find so I wouldn't suggest it would be easy to get 2/3 in your team (Barcelona were lucky to have Xavi and Iniesta at the same time, and now Cesc to join them).

Pack the centre of the park, break on the wings and test Alves and Abidal with pace. That would be how I'd suggest taking on Barce. The fact that Ferguson played Ronaldo up front in the first final against them instead of against an ancient Sylvinho makes me wonder about his ability to react with his tactics. Ferguson builds great teams by looking at its own strengths, but I can't really think of moments when he's outwitted the opposition by taking advantage of matchups.

Definitely agree with your strategy! Thats how Arsenal beat them last year from 1-0 down. Walcott on the wings tore the fullbacks a new one. You got to hold the centre, watch the replays of last year's CL final and all 3 goals came through there. You also got to press high up the pitch up to their defensive mids - disrupt the link between def and mid - their moves start there.

I'm just about with SAF if he's decided to really put his weight behind our youth (pogba, cleverley, morrison and Anderson to a lesser extent) instead of buying a midfielder.

It worked out with Ronaldo and I can see it working out here. So what if City have a couple of good seasons before they get kicked out of Europe under Financial fair play- we'll have the last laugh.

Well, I think that couple of seasons would seriously hurt ๐Ÿ˜‰ but yes, I think SAF is moulding the club wisely now overall - I'm actually an Arsenal fan, but always have respect for people willing to play football. I think the story of the season is him trying to balance United's grit and solidity against their attacking capabilities. It failed miserably against City, and Rooney's dropping into mid was not too great to watch, but it's had some great successes too in pre-season and early PL. I think as this side gels you'll play some of the best football of SAF's reign by the end of the season.
