Wayne Rooney should be available for Man United’s game with Benfica despite missing training. Neil Warnock hails the impact of Heidar Helguson, while Richard Stearman is expected to be sidelined after surgery on a broken wrist.

Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed any fears of an injury to Wayne Rooney in this afternoon’s pre-match Champions League press conference. Rooney and Jonny Evans had both missed training this morning ahead of the game against Benfica but the United boss said this afternoon:

We’ve got one or two knocks from Saturday. Jonny Evans has some tightness in his hamstring but will hopefully be okay tomorrow. Wayne’s got a few knocks and missed training today but should be okay. Chris Smalling trained this morning but won’t be available for tomorrow – he should be okay for Saturday [against Newcastle] and Anderson is out injured.

Richard Stearman is set to face a spell on the sidelines after Wolves confirmed he will undergo surgery on his broken wrist. The right-back has featured in every league game for his club this season but his absence could perhaps open the way for Roland Zubar to stake a first-team claim, having recently recovered from a groin problem. Alternatively, Stephen Ward moved to right-back at Goodison when Stearman was forced off, with Mick McCarthy sending on George Elokobi at left-back. Kevin Foley is still a couple of weeks away from a return.

Owen Coyle has revealed his disappointment following another lacklustre display saw his Bolton side beaten once again. The Trotters boss is far from happy with the lack of fighting spirit amongst his charges and judging by his scathing assessment, it would be no surprise if Bolton are set for a couple of changes this weekend.

The testament to anyone’s character is when you go out there on that pitch and you’re under the cosh, you need your big leaders to organise and be resilient. If you are compact and focused, the minimum you leave with is a draw – but we didn’t have enough of them to do that. They need to sit and analyse that and see if they feel they did their best in the second half. I’m not so sure that we all did.

Steve Harper has returned to Newcastle following a one-month loan deal at Brighton. Going the opposite direction is Kazenga Lua Lua, who has signed for the Seagulls on a permanent basis. He joins Gus Poyet’s side on a three-year deal, having been on loan there since the start of the season.

Kenwyne Jones has pleaded with Tony Pulis for a first-team start as Stoke’s poor league form continues. The August signing of Peter Crouch has seen Jones drift out of the picture, with the role of a second-half impact sub as good as it gets recently. Jones has failed to start a league match since gameweek three for the Potters but with five defeats in the last six, Pulis’ side are misfiring badly. Jonathan Walters has netted 4 time but Crouch has scored just twice so far- with a home clash against Blackburn up next, the Stoke boss may well be tempted to shake things up.

Reports suggest Adel Taarabt was unavailable for QPR last week after losing his passport while on international duty with Morocco. Taarabt has been a peripheral figure since gameweek seven, storming out of Craven Cottage after Neil Warnock subbed him off at half-time. He’s expected to return to the UK today, though with no goals or assists this season, his absence has hardly affected QPR of late.

Warnock hailed the impact of Heidar Helguson, after 5 goals in as many games disproved the doubters. Given a start in gameweek eight, Helguson has proved integral to his side’s goal threat and, with a double downing Stoke at the Britannia last weekend, his manager comparing his influence on the team to that of Bolton’s Kevin Davies:

I couldn’t buy anybody that’d have played as well as Heidar did. Impossible. He’s like a young pup at the minute, he’s really enjoying himself. Yeah, he’ll get injured, no doubt, but at the moment he’s on top of his game and the first name on the teamsheet. We don’t play three games a week in the Premier League and he gets proper rest.

    Aternoon fellas,

torn between 2 transfer options this week...

    A. Bosingwa > Baines

    or

    B. Suarez > Hernandez

Can leave my back 3 as Jones - Brown - Naylor if I go with B but Suarez is startign to take the mick now...

both good options, but Suarez has only one more tough fixture.
I'd go for A. Baines is a good option but a little pricey for a defender.

Oooh very tough choice. What is the rest of your team? I would play Brown, Jones and Rangel for definite and if your midfield allows you to go 4 at the back (which I'm judging by the money spent on your backline it does) then play Richards too.

can't bench me Demba... for me he is a highly under-rated fearless scorer and a great finisher as well...

as for Richards - yeah... I benched him against Man U... got an assist but that was so unexpected. I feel LFC will play tight and will let in one if any at all!

A 4 point hit is not worth it on 2 defenders. Getting rid of Bos should be your main priority. Enrique, BAE, Shawcross are all good options although you won't get many CS with BAE

I'm very confident. Unfortunately I'm very confident Spurs are gonna run riot. I would probably say 3 - 1 to Spurs.

We really need to tighten up if we are going to get anything out of the game, and possibly sneak something. Can't see it happening though, but hopefully I'm wrong.

I also feel a bit bad that I have VDV in my FF team. 😀

lol....I too have VDV in my team and am resigning myself to a right tanking. I won't begrudge a spurs win if we manage to keep Bale quiet, VDV bags a few and they concede (pref without any assists from Walker or BAE). Bale is the fear factor though, really need Hutton to cut him down early......(at the expense of a red if necessary).

However, their performance at Stoke shows that they don't need to rely on him and can play as a team. Now we'll see if they can press on at Norwich next week without Taarabt & Barton (suspended) - will they have leadership in the form of Derry?

Don't get me wrong, Taarabt is the reason why we're here in the first place.

    Given (Ruddy)
    Walker - Enrique - Vermalean - (Wilkinson) - (Simpson)
    Walters - Ramsey - Silva - VDV - (Ferguson)
    RVP - Bendtner - Adebayor

I think I need to get some Mau Utd coverage. I've 2.1m in the bank & 1 FT. I'm top heavy with both Spurs and Aresnal players, but both have good fixtures. I'd love to get Nani back in but like my other midfielders. Only 2 options i can think of are:

    1)Walker to Jones
    2)Adebayor to Hernandez

Both are kinda sideward moves, but would give would give me Man UTD coverage. I'm leaning towards option 2.

Option 1 if Spurs don't keep a clean sheet tonight.

Option 2 if Adebayor only get 2pts tonight - assuming Rooney's fit to play Benfica & Newcastle.

Either way, having VDV + spurs player for double gameweek soon is very handy.

I would not chase MUN cover. They're winning games 1-0 at the moment. It's going to be tough hard fought wins and the goals are going to be shared around.

Good point, but they are keeping alot of clean sheets recently so maybe jones is a good option after all. In hindsight I probably should have went for Jones over Vermalean, but Verms goal scoring ability attracted me, but I didn't think about Aresnals lack of clean sheets.

Hi guys, here is my team for Gameweek 13:

    Vorm (Given)
Brown, Kompany, Shawcross, (J Enrique), (Simpson)
Sinclair (VC), Drenthe, Eagles, Silva, (Ramsay- as first sub)
    Rooney, Van Persie (C), Adebayor

I have ONE free transfer and 0.6 million in the bank. I am thinking of getting Given out for Ruddy and keep playing Vorm every week.

However, what transfers would you priortise if you were the manager of this team for next week? Or would you save up and use two free transfers for gameweek 14?

    Thank you

Getting rid of Given wouldn't be a priority as you have Vorm but as you already have a good team and nothing much to change, maybe you should go for it.

Would go for Westwood instead of Ruddy.

Well with Welbeck out, maybe Rooney might get a more advanced roll, but it's to much of a risk at the moment. Rooney is a streaky player, the key is to buy him before these runs. But when this happens is hard to know.

Assuming you have RVP, I'd be inclined to go for Suarez to Hernandez or better still Aguero.

Hello first time posting here! Been lurking on this site a while though and thanks to reading these comments I'm in the top 15k. But now I need some help as my teams a bit of a mess, Im worried I'm going to get a red arrow this week after 8 greens in a row, unless my tottenham players can do well tonight.

    This weeks team was:
    Begovic - (Ruddy)
Barnett - Wilkinson - Jose Enrique - (Raylor) - (Simpson)
    Ramsay - Watson - VDV - Silva - (Johnson)
    Aguero - Ade - RVP
    0.4 in the bank.

Ive got 2 free transfers, and was planning to Ade>Bendtner and Watson>Larsson. But now I'm thinking of going Ade>Helguson instead of Bendtner, since he's in great form and has a couple of decent fixtures, then week 15 change him to Ba. Anyone got any thoughts on this? Or think there are better transfers I can make?

    Thanks alot for any help.

I like your style... under promise, over deliver. I wish I had that knack. 🙂 As to your earlier question, Helgy in good form and cheap so, and I would definitely have advised against double-up Sun players anyway. Having said that, I'd show some Ade patience, perhaps consider your options after seeing tonight's result.

Finally, for me, Walters is a marginally better option over Larsson on form and pens.

Keep up the good work JR.

            Haha thanks 😛

I agree that Ade could deliver in the future and he always looks like hes going to get goals and assists. But I really want to upgrade Watson and getting rid of Ade was the best way I could see of doing that. I suppose if Ade really delivers tonight though I could just settle for Watson>Eagles.

            Thanks again.
