An astonishing 2,216 fantasy football teams did battle last weekend, in an attempt to qualify for the first round proper of Fantasy Football Scout’s Paddy Power Cup V. With our four previous winners safely installed in next weeks opener, there were only 1,020 places up for grabs…

As expected, the standards were exceptionally high and an automatic qualification score of 62 was set. [Remember, this is after points spent on transfers are deducted.]

A total of 990 fantasy managers made that grade, meaning that the 108 managers stranded on 61 had to rely on their overall rank to fill the remaining 30 spots. The full list of results can be found right here.

Qualifying by the skin of his teeth is 45,465th in the world, woodpecker, who takes the 1,020th and final spot. In contrast, 45,750th in the world, don parcheesi, misses out by the narrowest of margins (a single transfer).

Commiserations to everyone who misses out – a list which includes all but five of the Scout Contributors.

The draw for Round One will be made shortly and will go live on the site at least 24-hours before the gameweek 13 deadline.

    Continuing the interesting discussion earlier:

Actually thought Sturridge was our best player on the pitch. He made some pretty good runs, especially in the second half, made a crucial pass to the Drog for our only goal and was decent in the few defensive stints as well.

There’s no place for Anelka in this squad at the moment. He may have looked good in spells, but his mind isn’t in the right place. He’s almost 90% set to leave the club in Jan, so it only makes sense we have a back-up winger at RW, even if we sign Hazard or another quality winger.

IMO the biggest problem with Chelsea is that the players aren’t able to adapt positionally to AVB’s strategy of pressing and the defenders are ageing to run this high defense line. It might work for Barca, but they have quality in their back four. Even their oldest def Puyol is one of the best CBs in the world. Chelsea need to go back to playing deep once again. That’s where the strength of most players like Terry, Luiz, Ivano, etc. are. AVB simply can not blindly play his favorite formation/tactics (from Porto), ignoring the requirement of his players.

Also, we need to switch back to our 4-4-2 and let Studge & Torres/Drog to play upfront. Whenever Mata plays at CAM, Torres should play upfront. Whenever Lamps does, the Drog should.

    Ivan—-Luiz—–Terry—-Cole
    ————-Romeu————-
    ——Ramires Mereiles——
    ———-Mata/Lamps———-
    —–Sturridge—–Torres/Drog

      so Sturridge nailed on 100%?

I wish he'd be a striker. But AVB doesn't have options for wingers out there. Plus as I mentioned he wants to develop Studge for a Hulk-like RW role.

Reckon he'd start Studge - Torres - Mata on Sat.

That 3 would be the most effective for Chelsea, they just need to build on it with effective backup players encase of a loss of form, injury or rotation requirements

Good post Elnino. I dont follow much of Chelsea but I think they should build the side more around Torres (yes), Mata and Studge. Play the young hungrier players like Joshy and gradually replace the ones.

Yes results is still under expectations, but its too quick to judge AVB after only 12 weeks.

Cheers ILA. Precisely that's what we'd like to see - have more faith in Torres. When he doesn't do that, he can't expect us to have faith in him, can he?

Also his pressing strategy is too much of a change for this Chelsea squad, needs to slowly bring them forward & not like the way he's been doing. It's like all 11 players are given a free role, including Cech.

AVB still young and might expect the rapid change. He might overlooked some lacking in human resources in his squad to deliver that pressing tactics.

Thought he was coming into form before the red card against Swans. No matter how shit he is now I think he's still quality and Id always play him first choice above the other strikers.

The pressing is probably too much for the older players and they seem to always run out steam midway through the second half. Agree on the account that they should play deeper. And tame David Luiz ffs.

The funny thing is David Luiz plays so much differently with Brazil. He's one of their best defenders on the pitch, very technically sound.

The big reason - he never enters the opponent's half & plays well deep behind quality DMs.

      Precisely, ENR.

I hate AVB for his Wenger-ness. He is too stubborn and is not willing to change the tactics, even after our string of results. I think the next four, Liverpool(CC), Newcastle(A), City(H), Valencia(H).. are MASSIVE and will decide AVB's fate.

Ahhh. Very tough choice. Esp since you're going with BAE - Rangel - Brown with your defence, essentially doubling up on one of those teams.

I'd go with SuperVorm. Villa are shit at the moment & Swansea are looking solid. Also, he tends to give you atleast 1 save point..

so i can have this team to go:
    ----VORM---
    TURNER---KOMPANY---ENRIQUE
    DYER--VDV---RAMSEY---DRENTHE
    RVP(c)---ADE---STURRIDGE

    given,silva,gabbidon,simpson

Umm.. I agreed with one poster last nigh that he could bench Silva as his option is Arteta/Ramsey.
But, in your case, Dyer and Drenthe are not as good as Arsenal MF.

If you believe Dyer will do good in home game, I'd bench Drenthe. Anyway, I could be wrong.

          Reason to bench Drenthe? Umm...

From my view, both Everton and Swansea are not good at attacking and both matches have no clear winning side. So, I'm usually preferred player from home team. Individually, Drenthe looks more dangerous than Dyer but, as a team, I like Swansea's chance at home.

As I mentioned above, I've seen NAZRIJACK chose to start Dyer ahead of Silva. So, I think he might believe Dyer will do well on this weekend. If he was to choose between Drenthe vs Silva, I suggested him to better bench away player - Drenthe.

That's my thoughts.. Drenthe seems to be quality player though. So, I said I could be wrong.. 🙂

Disclaimer: The following is how I chose my midfield and strikers.

I chose one dirt cheap player which will accompany my two defenders on the bench. Not really interested in how many points he gets regularly. If he comes on with a 2 or 3 once in a while, its OK.

The rest are high scorers and so called fixture proof players (as far as budget allows). I almost never bench any of these in front of defenders or my dirt cheap option. An exception would be if there is a high risk of the player coming on for a short cameo or similar.

Haha, almost. The rotation factor surrounding Jones in a fully fit MUN squad concerns me. I'm down to either Santos (and Ward next week as he rotates v well with Wilko/Woody) or Vermaelen (and Naylor - doesn't rotate well but plays for a defensively sound team. Not much else I can do with only 4.2m available).

I'm considering it. Great differential, nailed on starter whilst Gibbs is out (should be up to the wildcard), great fixtures and very attacking. Admitedly he's not the best defender, but that doesn't really make a difference when it comes to FPL point. Decided against Richards in the end - fixtures are too bad. If I knew P Jones was definitely starting this w/e I would have probably gone for him. You no likey?

Im sure i have the same issue as a few people in whether to bench Silva or not? Im not convinced that he will score well against Liverpool and i fancy a Swansea clean sheet vs Villa

    Vorm
Baines, Enrique, Wilkinson, Evans Taylor (swa)
    VDV, Nani,
    RVP, Bendtner, Gervinho

    Ruddy, Silva, Dyer, Tiote

    Thoughts?

Evans is unlikely to play and Silva will get into your team anyway.

Btw, most likely good score of DF is 6 pts while it's a lot more for MF.
If I had choice, I'd play my MF rather than DF.

      Much better than yest's draft.

Haha Bendy (no form/consistency whatsoever) and Studge (misfiring team) aren't there for a reason. If this a WC team, honestly I'd look elsewhere in Klasnic/Helguson/Ba (after this GW). Why have Studge only for a week?

Klasnic is a great bet and seems to be on penalty kicks. That would give you 7 penalty takers and a striker that finds the net regularly

The recent performance of Stoke is shocking. I think there's high risk to play both ShawX and Wilko against BLA who scored in all away games. No pressing issue in MF. I think Gabby has too tough fixtures and he's probably the first to go.

For budget striker, don't you rate Bendtner? Three good games to hope for goals/assists. I don't like to risk getting potential injury player (Helguson). I had experienced some events that the players were fit to play but performed poorly or even got injured during the game.. 🙁

Good point about Stoke. Play Enrique/Simpson over one of them? That's why I'm strongly considering ShawX to Baines.

Yes, Gabby has to go. No Bendy for me (0 form/consistency). Klasnic / Ba (set to rise 0.1 tomorrow, going to get him in next GW anyways for Studge).

Yeah that was a tough call but decided Bolton aren't too good at home and Everton are at the start of a good patch so it is somewhat of a punt. Not a bad call on BAE I might just do that especially with Stokes poor defense of late. I guess I still expect them to be solid at home especially against Blackburn

1 FT left with 1.8mil in bank.

    Vorm
    Richards - Brown - Evans
    Mata - VDV - Silva - Bale
    Ade - Bendtner - RVP
    Sub: Krul, Dyer, Naylor, Simpson

I know Evans has less chance to play but I think Naylor (Swansea at home) is a good sub for this week.
    - Budget left exactly for Evans > Jones, but I'm always unlucky with United DF and afraid to see Jones get a rest on weekend.
    - It's also 0.3mil short to do Mata > Lampard and I still don't want to drop Ade for Sturridge.

I think I may keep FT to next week. Do you think of any choice of good transfer I could make for this week?

    a) Santos & Ward, or
    b) Verm & Naylor

    b) seems the obvious choice, BUT, when you consider the defenders they need to rotate with (below) I'm swaying towards a). Thoughts?

It actually is though. With b) I'd only have 1 defender from 5 at home for GWs 14, 16 & 17.

Also, Ward is far more attacking that Naylor, and Santos appears to have better stats than Verm. Why do you think b) is way better?

Personally I don't think its always necessary to have defenders at home every week. Your are right about Ward but Santos is a liability and could get dropped once Gibbs comes back. In saying that though Gibbs will be out till Xmas so a) could work. Overall though I don't think either a) or b) are ideal. I would rather have Jones than an Arsenal defender

Hmm, I have spent far too long this week thinking about defender transfers! If Jones didn't have so much competition for starts at MUN then I'd agree, but a rotation risk at 6.3m is a bit much I reckon. He's also due a rest after playing 4 games in 10 days. Another alternative is for me to do get Verm & Naylor, and then do Brown -> someone who rotates with Naylor/Simpson (someone like Jags/BAE) in GW16. That only leaves a rotation problem for GW14. Better idea?

Jones might be rested this weekend (equally might not be though) but long term he is a very good signing. He's started 10 out of 12 Prem games and this trend will undoubtedly continue.

Utd have tightened up a lot in recent weeks making their DF options look very tasty and reducing the appeal of their attacking options.

had Jones for 3 GWs and he's got me 3 Cleanies and been unlucky not to score or assist in those games too. He's very attacking and can sometimes play in MF too.

Great signing IMO regardless of if he plays this particular GW or not. Thats what your bench is for.

I agree - I think he's a quality player and should play every week for MUN. However SAF will want to protect him and he has Smalling and Rio amongst others to keep happy, so I can see him missing a few games (this w/e would be an obvious time to do so). I think Vermaelen is worth the extra 0.4m as he scores more and I doubt will ever get rested (we cannot defend without him).

Torres didn't even come off the bench tonight, got to get rid of him this week although my team fixture wise look good. I'm thinking a straight swap with Hernandez, will leave me with 2.8 in the bank?

Nothing in his form to suggest he will do anything........

I quite fancy Wolves to come away with a point, will be 0-0 or 1-0 imo. Chelsea are shocking at the moment, I'm not holding a £10m striker who is a rotation risk and has scored 2 goals since January.

Torres WILL play against wolves. Sell him after this weekend, United could struggle against Newcastle too so don't expect too much from Hernandez

fair call... simply suggesting u have stuck with for so long seems an odd game to finally drop him. But in the end it's your call. I think it will be high scoring, even bringing in Sturridge for Suarez for cover.

Could work out well for that he didnt even come off the bench last night. It makes it all the more likely he'll play against Wolves if you ask me.

And a well rested and hungry Torres could score big against a weakened Wolves side in bad form

Wolves are probably in better form than Chelsea! aha

He may play but he won't do anything and will probably get subbed off around 60-70 minutes, I just think this is the time to get Hernandez, some very nice fixtures ahead.

I do think Torres will come good eventually but towards the end of the season when the pressure is off a little.

I'd seriously hold for GW if you can hold your nerve. You could be right of course and the form of both Torres and Chelsea points to that, BUT you'll kick yourself if he scores well this GW.

It's your own fault you are in this position anyway for buying him in the first place 😉

Cheers! Main consideration was whether to play N Taylor (Swansea at home are usually pretty tight). I'm thinking about shipping Aguero out after the NOR game for Chico (or perhaps Rooney if he finds some form). MCY have tough fixtures up to the Jan wildcard....Are you going to keep them both?

Ok give me your opinion on my bench now:

      Westwood
      Jones Naylor Wilko
      VDV Silva Walters Eagles
      RVP(c) Aguero Bendy

      Bench: Vorm, Drenthe, Hibbert, Enrique

I'm torn between Drenthe and Eagles and also whether to just drop Wilko despite the fixture as Stoke are leaking goals everywhere.

Also who to give VC to? feel it's an important one this week as RVP might get a rest this GW

55 isnt a measly score. Comfortably above average but just not quite good enough to make the Paddy Power Cup.

I was looking (briefly) at it but I just didnt see the point. Am I right in thinking that you need to have a Paddy Power account and that the prizes are all free bets?

If so then it seems like a fantastic deal for Paddy Power.

No. You would then need Naylor to keep a clean sheet just to break even on the deal.

Woodgate could play as well and B'burn at home is as good a time as any to start playing well and keeping clean sheets.

Imagine a scenario where you take the hit and Swansea concede (always possible against Bent, Agbon) and Stoke keep a cleanie. You'd be livid with yourself

Jack, don't you think Baines could easily score 4 points more than ShawX/JE/Simpson, esp considering Bolton's weak defensive options on the right.

I could afford the Swede, but I don't like extra 0.4m. I fancy zzz as a goalscoring mid with this form.

      The holy one out 😉

But the three subs you list seem like a decent enough moves though. I want Ade myself but am prepared to wait until after Aguero has played Norwich then he'll be gone.

Are you sure about Shawx this week though (and for a 4pt hit)? He has an easy fixture whereas Baines has to go to Bolton. Could backfire on you IMO

Feeling uneasy about doubling on stoke defence. Also Bolton is defensively weak on the right and that's Everton's strength. Have a feeling Baines will be the man!

Just do Nani to Bale though. No point taking another 4 pt hit for a defender you will get rid of next week.

I personally wouldnt. Especially the Simp to Vidic bit, purely because they are Defenders. You only get 4pts for a cleanie so you are hoping Vida will score or assist to make it worthwile.....which aint guna happen I'm afraid.

Nani to Bale is a risk as Nani is such an explosive player. But on form it looks a very sensible move
