Harry Redknapp reveals he’ll continue to protect Rafael Van der Vaart’s problematic hamstring. Phil Jones admits he’s happy to play anywhere for Man United, while Robin Van Persie is rested for Arsenal’s trip to Olympiacos this week.

Harry Redknapp has given Fantasy managers plenty to ponder after admitting he will continue to be cautious over the Dutchman’s ongoing hamstring problem. Van der Vaart was handed a late second half sub role in the 3-0 win over Bolton, with Jermain Defoe vindicating his manager’s decision with a goal and assist in the stroll. With a busy upcoming Christmas schedule on the cards, Redknapp revealed Defoe’s form made the decision a less-difficult one than anticipated:

He’s disappointed, obviously, but he took it okay. It was a hard decision. I just felt the little man (Defoe) is on fire so I stuck with him. I like Rafa, he’s a great player, a good pro, but he keeps getting hamstrings. You’ve just got to be careful he doesn’t tear it and we lose him for six weeks.

Arsene Wenger gave Robin Van Persie’s Fantasy owners a boost this afternoon after omitting his skipper from the Champions League trip to Olympiacos. With the Gunners already through as group winners, Wenger can afford to rest and rotate ahead of the weekend league game against Everton. Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Gervinho and Mikel Arteta were also amongst the names left behind.

Having missed the previous week’s home clash with Newcastle, Phil Jones came straight back into the Man United starting lineup at Aston Villa with a bang, scoring the game’s only goal. Jones’ versatility is making him a major Fantasy asset so far this season, with the Newcastle game his only league absence and the player admits he doesn’t mind where Sir Alex Ferguson fields him at the moment:

I enjoy playing anywhere. I enjoy playing football, so wherever I am asked to play I will play. If the manager asks me to play right-back, centre-back or midfield, I will go and do a job there. I don’t think it really matters at the moment that I am cementing a spot in a certain position because I am still young. Hopefully as my career progresses that will happen.

Man City coach David Platt reckons the new summer additions mean it’s impossible for the side to produce the same type of defensive displays they have managed in the past. City have failed to return a clean sheet in seven successive league games now- compare that to last season, when Joe Hart picked up the Golden Gloves award for 18 clean sheets. Platt admits it’s no longer in their makeup to do so:

When we beat Spurs at White Hart Lane and United went out and put eight past Arsenal, Roberto told the players that we can’t take our foot off the pedal. We should go on and keep scoring. Last year we did not have the characteristics of the players that we do now. What Roberto has done this year is that he has gone on and added to it with Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri. Edin Dzeko also came in during January. We have got the type of players on the field which mean we cannot actually play defensively because of the characteristics of the players. We don’t really have a choice.

Alan Pardew is hoping to accelerate Mike Williamson’s return to action due to the number of injuries currently affecting the Newcastle defence. With Steven Taylor possibly out for the season and Fabricio Coloccini suffering from a thigh problem, Pardew confirmed that James Perch will start at Norwich this weekend as he looks to patch up his threadbare back-four, but admitted Williamson is not yet ready to return to the first-team fray just yet:

He’s going to need a lot of work on the training ground to get himself up to speed, but we might have to accelerate that. He’s not that close – he’s definitely not playing at Norwich, or maybe the one after that. We’re going to have to see if we can speed him up a bit.

Alex McLeish has called for Charles N’Zogbia to step up in performance after fining and dropping the player for a breach of club discipline at the weekend. N’Zogbia failed to report for treatment in the lead up to Saturday’s home game with Man United and Big Eck admits he need an improvement from the former Latics winger, with Villa recording a single win in their last seven fixtures:

He has to take it on the chin and show us the great player he can be. There are no grudges. I just want to see the boy go to another level. I think he can improve on what he has done before. We are looking to guys like Charles to come to the fore. Charles has got to be receptive and realise I want to help him and every single player at this club because we need all the help we can get.

Roy Hodgson kept with his recent 4-4-1-1 formation for the trip to QPR, despite the loss of Zoltan Gera. Graham Dorrans stepped into the role “in the hole”, tucking in behind Shane Long for the Loftus Road encounter and has designs on keeping his place in the Baggies first XI ahead of this weekend’s home clash with Wigan.

Wolves’ win over Sunderland saw Mick McCarthy revert to a 4-4-2 once again, with Jamie O’Hara moving back into a central midfield role. Steven Fletcher and Kevin Doyle led the line and although O’Hara picked up a somewhat contentious assist, his attacking threat was once again reduced from a less-advanced position. With home games against Stoke and Norwich to follow next weekend’s trip to Old Trafford, O’Hara’s Fantasy owners will be desperate for a change of heart from Big Mick.

Robert Huth returned to the centre of defence for only the third time this season and reminded Tony Pulis of his potential at both ends of the pitch. Pulis has mainly fielded the German at right-back this term but picked Jonathan Woodgate at full-back for the trip to Everton, moving Huth back into the heart of the back-four. Huth’s match-winner at Goodison, combined with Stoke’s first clean sheet since gameweek 8, will have given his manager plenty food for thought ahead of the upcoming home clash with Spurs. Pulis also revealed that Thomas Sorensen suffered only mild concussion after being taken from the field of play in the seventy-second minute.

Jose Bosingwa missed training today ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Valencia due to an adductor strain. The right-back has fallen out of favour and with Andre Villas-Boas’ side picking up 3 clean sheets in four league games since his omission from the first team, was unlikely to play anyway, with the London club requiring a goalless draw or win to ensure qualification for the knockout stages.

Owen Coyle has confirmed Bolton will appeal the red card that saw Gary Cahill depart the proceedings in the first half at Tottenham on Saturday. The decision of Stuart Attwell to dismiss the centre half left many baffled, with Cahill deemed to have denied Scott Parker a clear goalscoring opportunity despite the Spurs midfielder being more than forty yards from goal. Cahill will currently miss the weekend clash against Aston Villa but his manager is confident the FA will overturn a decision he described as “bemusing”.

I'm really struggling with the idea of playing 4-3-3 or 3-4-3...

I'm thinking of getting Nani in for Moses, but my other option is to bring in Verm and Jones for gabbidon and brown...

Verm and Jones would give me a better overall balance, but nani would give me another captaincy choice...

Good team. You could do with another good defender if you have any spare cash. Would probably move out Wilkinson, for BAE. You may have to move quick though as BAE's price may rise.

You stuck with Rooney, whilst everyone got rid of him. Would keep him now as you kept him this long and he has a good fixture list.

It's almost a coin flip. Wolves at Old Trafford could be a very lucrative game for Nani. He'd need an assist at least to break even. Depending what the rest of your midfield look like, I would wait.

I'm not surprised Wolves keep conceding, their closing down of the opposition is dreadful.

I hadn't seen much of them until the game yesterday, but they give the other team so much space it's no surprises that they can't keep any clean-sheets.

I think I'll shift Ward soon as never like relying on attacking points for a defender to stand a chance of getting more than 2. They have Stoke and Norwich soon, at home, but think they'll both score.

Agree with that but Wolves look dangerous from crosses and if they had a taller striker they would have scored a few more yesterday.

Eagles has a favourable next 4 games. Mata/Walcott/Nani/Ben Arfa/Bale/Lennon are all safe picks for a strong midfield in coming games. Not really sure of Brunt/Drenthe/Sessegnon/Walters' longevity at the moment.

      Good read Demi mate.

Mirrors a lot of my own thoughts on the man. I think Anderson is a much more loathsome figure yet the majority of United fans disagree with me on this as they prefer a bucaneering midfielder running into opposition players and losing the ball needlessly.

Have to agree with you there. Anderson's not lived up to his hype and price tag at all. He was great in his 1st season, but the potential just hasn't been realised. He's got a lot of work to do to win fans over now, when he returns from injury. Michael Carrick didn't play many minutes in the early part of the season but has been our best midfielder overall this season imo. Shields the back 4 well

Toure, Kompany and Hart are nearly certs to start despite Citys rotation.

Agree with above, I originally had Toure, got rid of him, but his price has fallen as probably as low as it will go and in the coming weeks it could be a good time to move. A few said African nations will be a problem but with a Jan wildcard surely he can be easily moved out.

    Hi chaps,

Would love some advice on how to improve my team.

    Begovic, Vorm
    Kompany, Brown, Simpson, Wilkinson, NTaylor
    Silva, Bale, Walters, Cabaye, Dyer
    RVP, Aguero, Ba

    3.2 in the bank

I think sorting out Begovic and my defence is key priority over the next week or two (although I'd like to ditch Cabaye too). Who should I be looking to get out/in?

Agree you need to improve your defence. You have all the better low price options but would shift one or two out in the coming weeks.

      With 3.2 you could go

      Wilkinson to Jones
      Then ... Brown to BAE/Walker

Start Vorm and move Begovic out when using Jan wildcard.

Cabaye could come good with a good fixture list so would give him another week or two until deciding.

Would prob do NTaylor to Jones, as you have Vorm and will be forced to play him.

Also Wilko should be back in the team this week and Stoke will still be good for home cleanies overall.

Brown/Simpson to BAE/Walker in a week or 2 is also a decent shout if nothing else urgent crops up.

Bloody hell, I was set on keeping VDV now that I've stuck with him throughout the recent spell of injury....

    My front 8 now is
    Sinclair/Rambo/VDV/Silva/Drenthe
    RVP/Studge/Chico

It's starting to look a mess with Drenthe, Rafa and Hernandez injured and Sinclair and Ramsey not delivering.. any bright ideas?

Bad-K is a waste of cash IMO. You can't keep relying on his shoulder for goals & City aren't keeping CS. Surely they won't keep too many until the WC.

IMO I'd rather have a Brown/Oily Mac for much lesser cash 🙂

What to do What to do?

    Vorm , Ruddy

    Jones , Walker , Jagielka , Mckauley , Naylor

VDV , Bale , Silva , Young , Ben arfa

    RVP , Sturridge , Bentdner
    Zip in the bank

So not sure what to do this week , baring in mind Bentdner is to be replaced after the blackburn game
was thinking maybe to Ba or downgrading mid to leave enough for suarez
So need to free up .5k (am not averse to downgrading jag)

Would like the good fixtures of Nani or maybe Adam , or Mata in acouple of weeks ,was controversially thinking the unthinkable and selling Silva for one of them ....(trying to win december mini league cash)

Anyone think of a cunning plan ?

Lets be honest for that value Vidic is a much better choice for the next 3 and the beauty of it is when you are ready to comeback for baines you don´t need to look under your sofa pillows for some change...Rooney or Nani, that´s the difficult choice but I´m allways more inclined to the penalty taker..and the price isn´t that different.

3m in the bank. looking to move Bendtner out.

    So ...

    A) Bendtner to Suerez (will Suerez ever good esp with Liverpool having a good fixture list)

    B) Bendtner to Ba - will leave me money to upgrade midfield (eg. Ramsey to Toure)

    C) Bendtner to Yak - will leave me money to seriously upgrade midfield (if prices stay the same, could go Ramsey for Mata, unfortunately would be just short for Nani.)

Before the weekend just gone, I was sure I could save a transfer this week. Instead, after a pretty mediocre week saved by some good baps, I find myself wanting Nani, Ba, Bale and Jones.

I've already done Ramsey to Bale. No-brainer in my opinion. What about any or all of the following for hits:

    A. VDV to Nani pending news on VDV's fitness later this week and Nani not getting injured in CL game.
    B. Kompany to Jones, again, assuming Jones isn't injured.
    C. Sturridge to Ba

As owners of the same 3 as you and admirers of the other three I can see the appeal. However defenders for hits is a no-no and I don't see much in Sturridge vs. Ba. Sturridge could've bagged a hat-trick on Saturday, he's so selfish it's perfect for FPL.

I'll consider the Nani move providing the stars align with VdV being benched and Nani starting.

I may end up with 8 of my team playing in just two games this week.

Recipe for a disaster in terms of points surely.

not normally a good thing, especially if it's attackers vs defenders. what's your bench like?

Not bad, I may well play Brown over Kompany and Dyer over Drenthe to give me some more variety.

    Team this week:

    Vorm (FUL)
Tierney (NEW) Taylor (FUL) Brown (BLA)
Drenthe (ars) Brunt (WIG) Bale (sto) Silva (che)
Bendtner (BLA) Van Persie(c) (EVE) Rooney(vc) (WOL)

Bench: Howard (ars) Formica (sun) Walker (sto) Kompany (che).

I'm taking a few chances and know that this will be a low scoring GW. Last chances for Bendtner - new manager and favourable fixture, Brunt on pens and playing Wigan... I just know that teams outside the top 6 will let me down...again.
