Our Watchlist rankings, offering player recommendations over the Christmas programme, are now updated and available in the sidebar. This week’s update, in line with yesterday’s “Frisking of the Fixtures”, finds United’s assets blinking brightly on our radar as they enjoy a favourable festive spell.

David De Gea is the only significant mover in our goalkeeper rankings. The United stopper was once again rested for the 1-0 victory at Villa last weekend, another warning that the Spaniard is far from secure, particularly around Champions League fixtures. Even so, with the group stages ending tonight, De Gea’s starting role could just be cemented over the Christmas period. There’s always risk but that also applies to every member of the United back four – with Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic perhaps the only exceptions. At least with De Gea, the auto-sub as a result of a 10-minute cameo from the bench won’t be a problem.

This is certainly the issue with Phil Jones. While the former Blackburn man climbs into our top five defenders, there’s little doubt that he still remains a rotation risk, despite starting more games than any other United player this term. Jones earned a midfield role at Villa, with Chris Smalling taking up the right-back spot. There’s every possibility that Jones will start all United’s games over the Christmas period, but with obvious options in defence and central midfield, it seems likely that he will be subject to some rest and rotation. Having said that, without a big outlay on the aforementioned Evra and Vidic, Fantasy managers have no better option within a United back four that looks destined for further defensive profits, having secure four clean sheets in five.

Newcastle’s Ryan Taylor suffers a slight dip in his Watchlist ranking, hanging on to a top five placing while we consider the impact of Newcastle’s injuries for their trip to Norwich this weekend. Taylor has more than enough attacking potential in his locker to cover for the lack of clean sheets while both Steven Taylor, and possibly Fabricio Collicini, sit out.

Blackburn’s Chris Samba is the notable new entry in our rankings. Restored to the Rovers defence, the club skipper could not prevent his side leaking two more goals at home to Swansea last weekend. There’s little doubt that Samba is a consideration for his value at the attacking end of the field – although with Ewood Park clashes against West Brom and Bolton to come, Samba could sneak an unlikely clean sheet if he can form an effective barrier with Scott Dann.

Gareth Bale does the unthinkable and knocks David Silva off the top of the midfielder rankings – clear indication of how far the Welshman has come this season as a Fantasy prospect. Bale is now a prime asset, clearly capable of delivering consistent returns, at least while Tottenham remain in the kind of attacking form that has brought them 10 wins in 11 matches.

Bale’s ascent is aided by the injury to Rafael Van der Vaart that has seen his starting role at risk for the weekend trip to Stoke and, indeed, placed increased rotation risk on the Dutchman over the busy Christmas period. While Bale will not be absolutely immune to rotation with Steven Pienaar and even Luka Modric an option on Tottenham’s left, it seems unthinkable that he will be rotated right now. The same cannot be said for Van der Vaart while Harry Redknapp struggles to keep the in-form Jermain Defoe on the leash.

While Silva drops to second spot, United’s Nani also enjoys a climb back into our reckoning and top five midfield prospects. United’s fixtures look set to offer stronger potential for goals, while the injury to Javier Hernandez saw Nani pushed up in support of Wayne Rooney at Villa Park last weekend. Danny Welbeck will be expected to take up that role over the Christmas fixtures, but the loss of Hernandez will likely put place more responsibility on Nani to find goals and could also firm up his starting role in the face of opposition from Ashley Young, Valencia and Ji-Sung Park for the flank positions. Nani is the obvious replacement for those suffering from Van der Vaart cold feet.

The North London pairing of Robin Van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor maintain the top rankings in our forward listings. They are joined in the top three by Blackburn’s Yakubu, who edges ahead of Newcastle’s Demba Ba on the basis of his cheaper price tag. Both Ba and Yakubu have kind Christmas fixtures that make them obvious candidates for our frontlines, in tandem with the more expensive Van Persie. The aforementioned Danny Welbeck is another consideration in the same price bracket, although we’re wary of his prospects right now until we’ve seen evidence of Alex Ferguson’s intent for his forward line.

City’s Sergio Aguero has clear potential to explode over Christmas but has continued to offer stuttering returns that struggle to justify his hefty price tag. Rotation over Christmas is an obvious threat in the City attack, adding to the appeal of the cheaper strikers elsewhere, who look more assured of starts if they can remain fit.

Shane Long and Steven Fletcher fall into that bracket – both vital to their side’s prospects over Christmas, we should expect their presence on the team-sheet; the duo are also displaying form that suggests they are worthy of consideration should Ba and Yakubu be overlooked in our lineups.

Wayne Rooney is perhaps the most interesting prospect over the Christmas fixtures. His Fantasy form has slumped alarmingly having been deployed in a deeper role in recent weeks. The injury to Hernandez will likely see his partnership with Welbeck restored however. Rooney enjoyed his best scoring form in tandem with Welbeck earlier in the season and, should Alex Ferguson charge his side with greater attacking intent, he could start returning profits once again. That would provide an effective differential for those willing to gamble on improved form. The big question is whether either Rooney or Aguero can discover form that can truly threaten to outscore Van Persie and displace the Arsenal main as the top price forward of choice. Right now, form and fixtures remain firmly in favour of Van Persie, who continues to claim the Fantasy Premier League captaincy from all but the bravest of Fantasy managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ha ha, neither. 🙂 Bolton have only 2 CSs all season, so while Everton have virtually no chance of CS theselves, Baines att qualities mean I'd play him.

His point is that if you are going to shell out 7.8 million on a defender for their attacking contributions primarily, you should't bench him. Everton aren't getting clean sheets, but baines attacking potential>boyata clean sheet potential

Dodgy hammy or not, among the best points per minute players in FPL.

          2010/11 = 2,222 mins last season, 13 goals, 9 assists, 19 baps 165 pts

          2011/12 = 754 mins, 6 gls, 2 ass, 14 baps 69 pts (already)

Any transfers you can see that’s worth a 4 point hit?

    Vorm (Krul)
    Vidic Jones Brown
    Walters(v) Silva Bale Drenthe
    RVP(c) Sturridge Adebayor

    Subs: Dyer Simpson Ward

    Bank: 3.3

Unsure whether to start Dyer or Drenthe, but going to hold tight on transferring Drenthe out and see if he actually shows up this weekend.

KC, I'd definitely start Dyer. He's unlikely to score more than 2/3 but I expect the Gooners to hit Everton hard, and Drenthe could come on as a late sub for 1.

Definitely no subs for 4pt hit required, IMO.

Give Pards a chance CJ, I'm not so sure NEW will fall apart, especially if Coloccini gets back sharpish. For their prices, Krul/Simpson worth standing by for now at least. I'd be looking to move Warnock out, but I assume you'd need to do two transfers to switch him to Jones/Vidic/Evra?

        Sorry Enrique.

Looking to swap ShawX > Smalling. Solid? Jones is overpriced IMO. I cannot stand a 5.5mil+ def in my team, that too a rotation risk 😉

I like Smalling, bringing him in for Rangel next week, barring any injuries. ShawX out seems the obvious choice, would look at changing Wilko in the future though if he continues to get >60 mins per game.

Brown, ShawX and Simpson still give sufficient defensive cover for this week so a Utd defender is not a priority. I'd be monitoring the VDV situation very closely if I had him. Another start on the bench and it would be hard to ignore Nani/Mata. I made the decision to get rid of VDV last week as the injury situation is going to an ongoing worry.

Fair point Jafa. I can understand your concern about VDV & many others around here for that matter. I'm going to respect Rafa & give him another start. If he fails to deliver, I shall lay the red carpet welcome back home to Mata! MITFM.

You reckon ShawX/Simpson will get a CS? Doesn't look likely IMO. Hence the 4 pointer to a United defender could be worth it, no?

JE and Brown have reasonable propsects this week. You are only going to play 3 defenders anyway so there is no rush to get another defender in this week. VDV is going to start costing you pts if he keeps up with the Robert de Niros.

Save a free trade for next week and monitor VDV closely. If HR, lets it be known that VDV isn't starting, how will that leave you? That's how you need to approach it imo. 😕

Used up my FT already. Helgicopter > Ba. Will get him back later when QPR's fixtures improve 😉

Agreed about JE & Brown. Considering we don't get any more -ve news about VDV, let's say I keep him for this GW. It's the third def I'm bothered about - ShawX & Simpson could easily end up on 1 point. Don't you fancy United to get a CS? The 4 point hit sounds quite reasonable?

I do fancy Utd for a cs (although the Wanderers are capable of knicking one). The blog above though mentions the vulnerability of rest with Jones still though. Simpson-NEW are still quite capable of keeping a cs at NOR. They are a well organised unit that play as a team so they'll always have a chance.

As I mentioned, the VDV situation is the priority and I've walked the talk with him as you can see. 😉

4.4m in the bank, and Ferguson on your bench, hmm.

If you're happy with your team for this GW I'd leave it, but I'd look at bringing in Mata & Gower for Ferguson & Ramsey. Defence looks alright as long as Wilkinson is getting the minutes, could potentially straight swap him for Shotton if he continues to start.

      6/10. A little generic.

As ever, exp defenders weaken the midfield, traditionally an area of higher points scoring. Ramsay, Ferg and Drenthe would all concern me.

To be w/out Utd attacking coverage may well be an issue for you. Try to work Nani in there via a defender.

Simpson. Newcastle may have a makeshift defence but will concede less than Bolton and I doubt you'll benefit from attacking points for either.

Gabbidon-->Phil Jones for 4 pt hit? (Could also afford Evra for the month)

Currently 4 cheapies in defense with Kompany, would like to run Wilkinson, NTaylor and PJones at the back this weekend.

Playing in a monthly head 2 head for high end beer(s), I am up 2 pts after week 1 of December.

I think I will have to lose Suarez, particularly if he misses this w/e.

My current thoughts for changes over next couple of weeks are either:

    Suarez/Ramsey/Moses to Sturridge/Walters/Larsson

    or

    Suarez/Ramsey to Yak/Nani

I like the first option because it gives me good cover over Christmas(although slightly concerned about MON changing things).

The 2nd is more a gut feel about United's attacking potential over some nice fixtures.

    Happy to take any views....

Aguero > Ba or Rooney depends on tonights performance!

Ba - Having a great season, awesome fixtures and would allow me to upgrade Drenthe > Yaya, Sess > Mata!

Rooney - Amazing fixtures, only guaranteed Utd attacking cover, Captain choice especially over xmas when RVP will be a risk, playing further forward with Hernandez out, Utd will start scoring more but terrible FPL form and a lot of money wasted on one position!

Rooney is still the third highest scoring forward in FPL though up against a porous WOL defence. I'm taking a risk and reward punt this week and cap'n'g the blighter. Interested to see the effect of Rooney sans Little P.

Not sure that is the only factor but good luck.

No doubt Roonpig will outscore ba until the Jan WC. Look at the price difference, the cheap strikers are doing enough IMO. use the cash elsewhere.

If I had the pig, I'd keep. I would never even think of getting him in yet.

There is also no guarantee that Rooney will be playing "up top" either, if anything, he will be in the same position he has been the last 3 weeks, supporting a striker (which could be Nani, Welbeck or Young - but most likely Welbeck) and dropping back to do a lot of work too.

I really want Rooney for the comfort of having Rooney "in case" they score big, like many others, I think I need to get over the comfort factor and go with the likes of Sturridge/Ba until we know Rooney is back on the goal track.

If Young or Nani play a more central role it'll be behind Rooney, not ahead of him. When he plays with Welbeck they switch positions between the no 9 and no 10 roles.

        Cerny in indeed. Fail.

I have already made my FT this week. I am looking to chop Drenthe, VDV or even brown as higher priority. I am happy enough to play Vorm for next few so wont make the change for another 2 weeks at least.

I got simpson though and dont like doubling up usually.

You have a very similar team to me. Your defence is good enough to just bench Simpson if you're unsure about a Newcastle home game, well, that's my thinking anyway.

Hmm, Krul/Vorm does look very good apart from that GW19 as you said. I think I will leave my GKs for now and see how it goes. I have 3.2 in bank and want a Utd defender. Probably for Brown as the big teams are keeping CS (apart from City but Kompany is a season keeper) and then changing strategy to play 4 at back.

Mata, and anyone for Drenthe are also on my wish list.

I believe Kenny is out for q some time acc to the tweet recently on here. As, so it happens, is the QPR no 2, which leaves the way clear for Cerny. He also rotates nicely with Vorm.

At 4 mill, you have the cheapest gk in the game so even if you don't play him, you'll be freed up of some cash to use elsewhere.
