The hangover from Wednesdayโ€™s Champions League exit will no doubt remain in the system for quite some time but Unitedโ€™s response this afternoon was swift and emphatic.

Bereft of their skipper for the rest of the season and with goals proving hard to come by, plenty had questioned the championsโ€™ credentials after the embarrassment of Basel but, unfortunately for Mick McCarthy, Fergieโ€™s team had all the answers.

Perhaps buoyed by the easing of his Euro 2012 suspension, Wayne Rooney returned to his form of early season, slamming two past Wolves in a stroll at Old Trafford. Nani reprised his role of last season, moving over to the left, with Ashley Young afforded nothing more than a brief cameo late on in the second half. The Portuguese winger served a timely reminder of his Fantasy worth, grabbing a brace and assist and sits on 15 points. Pre-bonus, this is already his best haul of the campaign.

Antonio Valencia patrolled the right flank and provided 3 assists. Incredibly, his 11 point return is more than his total for the previous fourteen gameweeks and will surely give Fergie food for thought, with Youngโ€™s owners more than a little nervous of Unitedโ€™s increased potency in his absence.

Having recorded four clean sheets in their previous five, United had relied on Nemanja Vidic to shore up their leaky defensive but with the Serbian no longer an option this season, attack seems to be the way forward once again. A dependence on clean sheets has definitely diminished and a return to the displays of the opening few gameweeks will surely see investment in Rooney and Nani pick up pace over the next few days and beyond.

The next six gameweeks only add to the appeal- (qpr, ful, WIG, BLA, new, BOL) and will have many pondering the unthinkable and taking the armband off Robin Van Persie, particularly with Arsenal rolling up to the Etihad next week.

Post-match, Chris Smalling admitted the players were keen to answer their critics after the midweek humiliation in Switzerland:

It was a big game for all of us. The manager has shown faith all season and it was up to us to show the fans we should be a part of his starting XI.

Following todayโ€™s result, some of them may just have earned a place in plenty Fantasy XIs over the next few weeks, too.

I actually root for all 3 of the promoted teams. I hope all 3 of us stay up.

Onto FPL, I wasn't expecting Rooney to do anything so I saved up 2 transfers with the idea of getting Nani in and downgrading Rooney to Ba. I don't suppose there's any point in doing that now is there?

Rooney may as well be kept now he's back in form again, right?

Probably better off getting rid of Saylor instead this week. May get BAE in in readiness for the DGW.

Ideally I think it should be Nani / Ba.

But with the re-jigging necessary and S.Taylor to move on, it's messy.

          It's your call baby.

Rooney won't be rotated though and is on pens.

I think moving Saylor is more important as he is going to start losing me money and I need a full compliment of 15 players for the holiday period.

There aren't going to be many occasions when they play two games 48 hours apart. Not many players are guaranteed in those circumstances.

He has still been dropped/rested on more than 1 occassion.
And he is so inconsistent, with Park/Young/Valencia all possible replacements, any form slump (again) could see him benched, at least with Silva you know he is first choice every week.

Khan started well but did way too much fouling and spoiling and in DC that was never going to be a wise move.

Peterson also the aggressor in the fight and Khan took him for granted and got into a brawl.

Good fight. Peterson fought better and had superior tactics.

Peterson deserved it and Kahn just complained about poor refereeing and home crowd bias afterwards, which was utter bollocks.

I think this is what's getting lost in the rush to grab a cheap avenue (Evans) into United's defence - is that a defence you'd actually want to be buying into without Vidic?

      Crazy IMO.

Yes, I wasn't a fan of Nani but that performance yesterday has made me change my mind with the run of fixtures.

I have Nani in at 9.9 in a straight swap for Silva at 10.00. I bought Silva in week 1 so I've made a heap on him and have noticed the diminishing returns. If Man C continue to fire I'll bring in a cheaper Yaya.

I'm well set up but need to get rid of Dyer, R Taylor, Barton and Krul. Gonna be using that WC in Jan.

So you sold Silva - the highest scoring mid (alongside Nani) and lost 0.5 on him, making it costly to get him back. Who has almost 50% ownership, for a reason, meaning any decent score will mean your chances of a green arrow decrease. You say his score have diminished? He has averaged over 6 the past 6 weeks, including a game he was rested for.
What's even worse is you have Dyer, R.Taylor and Barton still!?

Well I have had Vorm, Kompany, Taylor, Jones, Bale, RVP, Ade, Ba, and solid others prior to their periods of scoring.

I guess the main reason is that intend to stay in the top 10000 again this year and it's this sort of decision that assists in making this happen.

How do you work that one out, Trigger?

Can downgrade Baines to a cheapo and upgrade anywhere else.

Probably a 4 point hit, but having Baines is probably better than sacrificing one of your big hitting Mids for Nani. (VDV/Silva/Mata/Bale etc).

Some people were talking about taking out RVP for Rooney earlier on. That would be a simple downgrade but Rooney won't be facing a porous defence like Wolves' every week and RVP can score against anyone.

Since I live in Prague and Cerny is Czech then I have a side bet with my mate on how many points Cerny will score before the end of the year.

Since he's a football nut, then I don't think he'd have risked a beer on his punt of 12 points if he thought that Kenny would be back next week, and the bloke is very thorough in his research. ๐Ÿ™‚

Depends how he plays today I guess.
Not so much VDV in is bad, but Adam just got an assist, is on pens/set pieces and has some good fixtures.

well if he had not of got that hamstring injury that he gets every few weeks which kills us fpl players lol i think he would of been in the team the last 2 weeks you could see a big move for defoe in transfer window as he is not happy not playing at spurs with the euros coming up
