The hangover from Wednesday’s Champions League exit will no doubt remain in the system for quite some time but United’s response this afternoon was swift and emphatic.

Bereft of their skipper for the rest of the season and with goals proving hard to come by, plenty had questioned the champions’ credentials after the embarrassment of Basel but, unfortunately for Mick McCarthy, Fergie’s team had all the answers.

Perhaps buoyed by the easing of his Euro 2012 suspension, Wayne Rooney returned to his form of early season, slamming two past Wolves in a stroll at Old Trafford. Nani reprised his role of last season, moving over to the left, with Ashley Young afforded nothing more than a brief cameo late on in the second half. The Portuguese winger served a timely reminder of his Fantasy worth, grabbing a brace and assist and sits on 15 points. Pre-bonus, this is already his best haul of the campaign.

Antonio Valencia patrolled the right flank and provided 3 assists. Incredibly, his 11 point return is more than his total for the previous fourteen gameweeks and will surely give Fergie food for thought, with Young’s owners more than a little nervous of United’s increased potency in his absence.

Having recorded four clean sheets in their previous five, United had relied on Nemanja Vidic to shore up their leaky defensive but with the Serbian no longer an option this season, attack seems to be the way forward once again. A dependence on clean sheets has definitely diminished and a return to the displays of the opening few gameweeks will surely see investment in Rooney and Nani pick up pace over the next few days and beyond.

The next six gameweeks only add to the appeal- (qpr, ful, WIG, BLA, new, BOL) and will have many pondering the unthinkable and taking the armband off Robin Van Persie, particularly with Arsenal rolling up to the Etihad next week.

Post-match, Chris Smalling admitted the players were keen to answer their critics after the midweek humiliation in Switzerland:

It was a big game for all of us. The manager has shown faith all season and it was up to us to show the fans we should be a part of his starting XI.

Following today’s result, some of them may just have earned a place in plenty Fantasy XIs over the next few weeks, too.

    Vorm, Hennessey
    Enrique, Jones, Simpson, Wilko, Ntaylor
    VDV, Bale, Silva, Larsson, Dyer
    RVP, Sturridge, Adebayor

if Tott doesn't score big today, don't think i'll be needing 3 Tott players. what about Ade to Ba, Larsson to Nani guys? or Sturridge to Ba, Bale to Nani.

I seriously think there is no answer to this.
You can't go wrong with any of the 3, all 3 have good fixtures over Christmas, and when fit, give you points.
Just be sure not to chase points (e.g if you go Nani and Mata scores big next GW, don't knee jerk)
      A real coin toss IMO

          Looking at it too, but
          1) Moses is way too much value to let go off at the moment 😉
          2) Never comfy with resting a striker. All it takes is a goal, esp with the revised BAPS system. Hence 3-5-2 is a no-go for me 🙂

Still...difficult to not have even one of them.

Michel Vorm is just the muts nuts when it comes to value. I was considering getting rid of Dyer and getting Caulker in to triple up on Swans defence. Hmm. Would mean playing 5 at the back some weeks though. Not such a great idea perhaps.

Let's me share my thoughts on how to accommodate Nani into my team.

    Vorm - Krul
    Jones - Enrique - Brown - Naylor - Simpson
    Mata - Silva - VDV - Bale - Dyer
    Ade - Ba - RvP

A: VDV -> Nani ... Simple one. I've 3 Spurs. This would give me better balance.
B: Bale > Nani + Jones > Smalling ... Keep VDV instead. But it'll be hard to get Bale back.
C: Mata > Nani + Brown > Evans ... Keep Spurs trio. Get Mata or Sturridge for Chelsea later.

    Any advice please.

Think it has to be A... trying to fit him in without losing one of your existing big 4 mids would compromise the rest of your team too much.

And as you say, it's not like you're lacking in Spurs coverage.

You have an incredible team dude. This is quite a balanced side with 4 big mids along with great forwards. You definitely need Man Utd cover and losing one of Spurs is the way to go. Bale will mostly play every game so its better to do VDV-->Nani.

Thank you. A seems to be a favorite move last week. I also finally decided to do it but missed the deadline by seconds. I blamed my finger and iPad that caused me missing 15 + baps from Nani. 🙁

VDV at home with Sunderland and Nani away to QPR is actually tricky fixtures. But I'm not sure if I'd have budget to buy Nani if I wait for 1-2 weeks. It's all up to what VDV will be tonight..

As a Baines owner i must say i am fidgetin.. team linked.. originally planned sessegnon to ohara this week, but not convinced on any mid below 6.5.. if instead i downgrade Baines to a 4.0 and upgrade Sessegnon to Nani, i can play 3 at the back every week with a very strong attackin lineup.. Baines just is'nt providin the value i expected:(.. i know he has teh fixtures.. still tempted though..
I don't expect Baines + Ohara to outscore McAuley/Gabbidon/CAulker + Nani over the next 5 weeks

I personally would keep Sess, he was very good last weekend and O'Neil might the best out of him.

I brought in Gower yesterday for Ramsey, but so I could upgrade Brown to Phil Jones. If he stays central midfield then he's a season keeper.

who are the best cheap mids? many teams have one for around 5 or less, especially for 4.5 or less

I have Tiote, but would kind of like to switch to Gower (of Swansea); thoughts on these and other 4.5 or less mids? basically good cheap mids who do well as substitutes

Paid immediate returns getting him in this week. Plus I read on the PL Fantasy blog that he was leading all players in key passes prior to this round, so the potential is there for plenty more assists.

I'd like to do Tiote--> Gower, but think that Kenny--> Cerny, and as a result, Brown--> Smalling should take precedence

Gower (very low ownership) isn't likely to increase in value, but Tiote could possibly decline

For a large point hit i could take out RVP for Fletcher (giving Ba, Fletcher, Klasnic) and then load up my midfield to give me Mata, Nani, VDV AND Silva.

I call it the Christmas belly tactic! Non of this bottom heavy business.

Seriously though, although it would take a brave man to drop RVP, do people think there might be value in budgest strikers to be able to load up on important mids during the Christmas period.?

Dropping RVP = no. Simple, look for other routes.

Whats the rest of team looking like? I'm guessing you have a pricey defense? Because a lot of people are managing 3/4 BIG mfs with Ba, RVP & a good 8-9mil striker

My team is fine, it wasn't REALLY something i was really considering (at least not while sober anyway), more of a catalyst to talk about the fact that Midfield players are coming more into prominence and i wondered if others though there was scope for a 'middle heavy' tactic.

cup nightmare for me. My trigger happy opponent who was 90,000 places behind me pulled off a master stroke 8 pt hit, bringing in and captaining Rooney. He's now on 52, I'm on 34...I've still got 6 to go, but going to need a massive performance from Silva and Sturridge in partic. This could be the end for me, if so I salute the balls of 66 irons.

Me - Walters, Bale (possibly Dyers 1pt), Kompany, Sturridge, Silva, Adebayor
Him, Walters, Bale (possibly Shelvey's 1pt), Bendtner.

But he has probably another 9 to come from rooney and sinclair bonus.

Just noticed he hasn't got my Ade either.

Basically Ade, Silva, Kompany have to score 18 more than Bendter...its possible, but he has the definite advantage.

Are you forgetting Sturridge? So you have those 4 vs his Bendtner (I thought he was a doubt?) + bonus points + 18? You need your forwards to score and pick up bps I guess...
