A late, late stunner from Seb Larsson gives Martin O’Neill plenty to smile about at the Stadium of Light. Rafael Van der Vaart returns to the Tottenham first-team but endures a frustrating afternoon as Matthew Etherington steals the limelight to end his old club’s unbeaten run:

Phil Bardsley
The left-back enjoyed a productive first game under Martin O’Neill’s stewardship, earning both assists in the 2-1 win. Bardsley’s presence in the Blackburn half was noticeable as he foraged forward time and time again, firing in crosses and efforts on goal. Clearly, in terms of offering attacking intent, he looks to be the key Fantasy target in the Sunderland defence. At 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), you’ll pay that little bit more, but, with clean sheets so unreliable as a source of points, Bardsley’s attacking potential could well be worth paying for.

Seb Larsson
The Swede’s ability from a dead-ball was again on show as he stepped up to curl home a dramatic late winner. Having missed from the spot at Wolves last weekend, Larsson redeemed himself with a wonderfully flighted effort that gave him his fifth goal of the season. With four assists and 11 FPL bonus also in his locker, Larsson has now clearly emerged as the top midfield prospect within the Sunderland camp. Set-piece delivery is set to be crucial to the Black Cats under O’Neill, which seems likely to see Larsson develop as an even more significant factor in their ascent up the table.

Chris Samba
Samba was immense at the back for much of yesterday’s game, repelling attack after attack as the home side poured forward in a relentless siege on the Blackburn goal. Subject of a Watchlist article last Friday, Samba vindicated our focus on his attacking returns with an assist for Simon Vukcevic’s opener. He has now scored or assisted in each of last five ninety minute appearances and with home clashes against West Brom and Bolton up next, could once again prosper, despite his side’s inability to keep a clean sheet.

Rafael Van der Vaart
The Dutchman earned a recall to the Tottenham starting lineup as expected, with Jermain Defoe dropped to the bench. Van der Vaart suffered a quiet, unassuming match, however, failing to have the kind of impact to mirror that of Luka Modric, who drove Spurs forward in the second-half. More significantly, Emmanuel Adebayor was given the responsibility from the spot when Spurs did make the breakthrough – indication that perhaps the Togo striker has jumped above Van der Vaart in the penalty taking pecking order.

With Nani returning two goals and an assist in United’s 4-1 win over Wolves, Van der Vaart owners will be pondering the merits of a trade. However, it’s worth noting that Spurs now have two consecutive home matches, while Nani has two away trips in the same period. With a double fixture to come in gameweek 20, it’s also worth planning ahead – it’s likely that Van der Vaart will enjoy huge levels of investment for his double gameweek.

Thomas Sorensen
The Dane seems to have established himself ahead of Asmir Begovic in the Stoke goal- yesterday was his fourth start in a row. Sorensen’s 7 saves helped condemn Spurs to a first defeat since the end of August but with four of the next six away, many Fantasy managers may well look elsewhere. Two back-to back Britannia clashes against Villa and Wigan in gameweek 18-19 could be tempting, given his 4.3 price.

Ryan Shotton
Priced as a 4.0 defender, Shotton again patrolled the right flank of the Potters’ midfield and, with so many experienced defenders at his disposal, Tony Pulis definitely seems to prefer him further forward. Shotton’s eye for goal has seen him score 3 times in all competitions this term and he also possesses a throw-in similar to that of Rory Delap- always a good attribute in Pulis’ side. If he can establish himself as a first-team regular, Shotton could prove a dirt-cheap out of position alternative to help free up budgets elsewhere.

Matthew Etherington
The winger chose a showdown with his former club as the time to open his account for the season. Etherington has been mainly in the shadow of Jon Walters when it came to eyeing up Stoke midfield Fantasy prospects, with just 3 assists to his name prior to yesterday’s clash, but a 15 point haul propelled him back into consideration. At 6.4 and with just 2.7% ownership, he’s been off many a radar but Etherington has a proven Fantasy track record and typically tends to prove good value- with 59 points, he’s edged ahead of the likes of Samir Nasri in the midfield pecking order on the back of yesterday’s match-winning performance.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Oh, Wilkinson has been yellow flagged for a back injury.

Is this the main reason he didn't feature last weekend or is it because he's a bit sh1t?

I think he didn't play cause of the injury. I think I am gonna wait till those 2 nice home games to decide what to do with him. I think that he is still first choice, but this wins for Stoke could be against him.

If he had let in two goals , not saved the pen, but scored a goal, he would have got at least one bonus points. Old system didn't reward keepers much either.

A machine? I miss the old system with the possibility of BPs for your defender or keeper, plus the great arguments it generated. Completely ridiculous in no bps for Vorm or Samba, who was amazing..

Even on the flip side-- RVP's goal was magic and gets one point, Song's cross was splendid too but even here a panel would likely have given each equal points-- I didn't watch the whole game so I may be on thin ice here, but I miss the human judgment portion from BPs and the quick posting of them. .

Are you Moses lovers having a laugh. He's had 40 odd shots on goal and scored one solitary goal and his fixtures are the worst imaginable.

Just because you thought he was going to come good doesn't meen he actually is. Move on. Select a midfielder that has a half decent chance of getting you points.

ONE of 31 players who received a bonus was a defender or goalie (Bardsley). Is that right?

What a consistent, awful bonus system. I understand why this silly system overlooks great efforts by Samba and Vorm for instance, but that doesn't make it right. Used to be fun to get an unexpected bonus for a defender you chose and followed.

Now prepare yourself for a barrage of replies saying "oh but it's transparent" and "oh but it's consistent and you know where the points are going" or "oh but we know players get -PPI for shots off target" etc etc etc It's brought up every week and all you get is the same old moronic replies.

The old system wasn't great either but this is not perfect. Just because it is consistent doesn't rule out the fact that there are consistent flaws and omissions.

Good starting XI, but subs could be better - McAuley/Begovic/Derry - Naylor is good value. But no need for drastic action, the subs can be sorted with the January wildcard. If you have no other important transfers to do next week, I'd look to move Begovic out, as he doesn't seem to be a guaranteed starter anymore. But as you have Vorm no need to take a 4point hit for it.
Ruddy would save you some money, Hennessey would be worth a thought and Krul could be an option but Newcastle looking leaky since Saylors injury

If they let a couple in tonight then I'll probably play RVP.

No I'm not. Arsenal could get destroyed next week. I can't see RVP getting many chances and I fancy him for two points only. I'll see how City get on tonight, if they look impressive then RVP is benched, if not he plays.

      Vorm and RVP I understand.

Shawcross - meh, didn't do much, lucky not to concede a pen.
Adebayor - scored a pen, did little else ('offside' goal = - PPI)
Vermaelen - CS, but came off after 80+mins, Everton had 0 shots on target.

Yes the bonuses are very debatable but I agree with about 80% of them. Seems that they treat GKs like outfield players, otherwise Vorm get 2BPs I'm sure.

    Vorms / Ruddy
    Vermaelen / Enrique / Jones / kelly / R Taylor
    Bale / Silva / Larsson / Gower
    RVP / Ba / Adebayor

Should I try and do any changes until January wildcard?
Should I change Bale for Mata the next gameweek / Nani for the next two?
With Newcastle's new back line, I doubt there will be much more left for Taylor. Should I get N taylor or De Laet (back 17th dec I think)?

I have 1.7 left in the bank, zero free transfers left. What would be the smartest thing for the next two gameweeks, and until January wildcard? Should I do two mid priced midfielders, one cheap and one expensive, or one cheap and one mid priced midfield with Adebayor upgrade to Rooney / Aguero? I fear Bale and Adebayor may go on a major goal block against Sunderland, and same can be said about Newcastle against the top cleansheat team in the league, Swansea. Even VP have tough fixes against a goal-loving City. Heck, is my entire offense out of luck?

Firstly, a big no to De Laet, he probably won't start when he returns.
I would change Bale to Nani because you have no Man United cover for their excellent run of games.
Defence looks good, a bit too expensive though. With Vidic out I would downgrade Jones to someone like Shawcross.

Caulker for Enrique instead perhaps? After the next two gameweeks Liverpool will have tough fixes, while Manchester -though vidic out- have great fixes.

        Vermaelen / Jones / Caulker / Kelly / R. Taylor
        Nani / Silva / Bale / Gower
        RVP / Ba / Adebayor

Looks better for upcoming weeks? Would mean an 8 point hit though.
