The armband was always going to be crucial. For once perhaps, Fantasy managers couldn’t’ snuggle to the Robin Van Persie comfort blanket. A trip to the Etihad presented the most significant obstacle to the Dutchman’s relentless rise – enough for us to ponder other options.

Demba Ba for example. Newcastle’s powerful mid-price striker who had already notched 11 goals in the campaign, three in his last three. Ba and Newcastle were at home to a Swansea side who had conceded 18 goals on their travels; the logic was sound. The scene was set for Ba to boost his reputation further, for the swelling numbers of his Fantasy owners to capitilise on their investment further.

Ba duly climbed to the top of this week’s Captain Poll, offering clear indication that the wisdom of the crowd was there. The Senegal forward suffered a frustrating afternoon however – becoming the latest player to be denied by the reflexes of Michel Vorm, who, with the aid of the woodwork, kept the Magpies out to earn the Swans an eighth clean sheet of the campaign.

A Ba blank drawn, we’re likely to see thousands of Fantasy managers sitting on four points for their skipper – frustration boiling. It’s a sickening blow, particularly if you’ve suffered modest returns elsewhere. Now these unfortunates must look to paltry profits form the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Tottenham trio, not to mention Van Persie, who surely would have held some captaincies – even with the intimidating trip to City in front of him.

It would be cruelly ironic if the Dutchman produced another Stamford Bridge performance; if he could put City to the sword with a goal or two. That would surely seal it – the armband would be soldered to his shirt, an immovable object that would remain in place until fragile hamstrings or ankles kept Van Persie in the stands.

For now we can just sit and wait and assess the damage when the dust settles. Those smarting from Ba’s day of frustration will now be watching the remaining matches, hoping and praying for the dullest set of 90 minutes in living memory. Eyes wide shut when Van Persie pulls the trigger.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Moyes has got to start Drenthe for Swansea match, he looked lot more dangerous than any of the other clowns they have in his twenty minute cameo.

I'm speechless. When did Everton become so bad? As Grenville was saying in the podcast, what's happened to Coleman. Why did I invest my blind faith in Baines and Howard?

He did amazingly well as an OOP defender last year. No reason at all why he has been totally useless in FPL terms this year. Big Dunc wont like me for saying this, but I think they are very close to the drop this year unless they can really pick things up.

They lack a goalscorer, had it not been for Drenthe (and Osman), they would have lost at home to Norwich....wouldn't have gone down well with the fans.

They need to start playing Barkley, Drenthe, Gueye, even Stracqualursi. I don't think Cahill and Neville are good enough anymore.

Don't think it'll come against Villa, much more likely to happen in the game after imo. Certain it'll happen sometime though, so getting your attacking subs sorted and with good fixtures is a priority imo. I think that anyone who tells you otherwise, and suggests RVP may play all the Xmas games is being caught up in the hype of the site.

Whitbread 3.9 NOR has played the last 2 but be very wary of rotation. Tbh, most of those players for 3.9 are under some sort of threat of rotation. Kelly at 3.9 FUL would be good if he played regularly. Missed today.

So im ditching yak for sturridge after blackburn play bolton but need to find some money, do i :
    Downgrade Walcott
    OR
Downgrade Begovic (needed) and Shaw X ( probably to Shotton) and take a 4 point hit?
Need to know soon before begovic drops so i can do a transfer before the next GW

Question for the people who captained Ba this gameweek... Are you going to captain him against West Brom?

    I might...

      Yes.

WBA looked very poor against an even poorer Blackburn, Newcastle played well, but wingers let them down and Swansea looked solid and disciplined - Vorm is the man!
