[sbu_large_image] Suspensions

It may seem a little mundane in the light of the more headline-grabbing disciplinary matters this week, but the sheer number of games at this time of year means that cards and suspensions come along at a rate of knots, so keeping on top of them can give you the edge you may need over your rivals.

Peering through the mists created by the Luis Suarez decision, you will have seen that Kyle Naughton disappeared from our suspension tightrope on Tuesday night and was bundled away into the isolation of a one-match ban. However, as tweeted and picked up in the Scout Notes yesterday morning – this suspension will be served against parent club Spurs, in a match he would have missed anyway due to his loan arrangement. Replacing Naughton on the Suspension Tightrope this morning will be Fabricio Coloccini. The Newcastle skipper earned his fourth yellow card of the season for a foul on Peter Odemwingie late on in the loss to West Brom and will face a one-game suspension if he is booked in either of the next two games against Bolton or Liverpool.

In addition to Coloccini, Fulham defender Chris Baird and Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy also received their fourth cautions in last night’s games. Baird joins the massed ranks from Fulham for a foul on Danny Welbeck after 62 mins of the comprehensive defeat to Manchester United, with Bellamy the sole Liverpool representative thanks to a show of dissent in the 0-0 draw with Wigan. They, too, will now run the two-game gauntlet until the criteria is extended to 10 yellows before a ban kicks in.

Next up, in the dying stages of Aston Villa’s defeat to Arsenal last night, Villa’s ex-Spurs full-back Alan Hutton was sent off for 2 yellow cards in the space of 80 injury time seconds to earn a (slightly) early bath. His first, for a show of dissent after 92 minutes, was quickly followed by the second, for a rash tackle on Thomas Vermaelen. He’ll now be missing for the Boxing Day clash at Stoke.

And finally, we are trying to clear up a little confusion surrounding Wolves defender Richard Stearman. Avid readers of these pages may remember, that having appeared on the tightrope in Gameweek Fourteen, Stearman was duly removed following an update to the Opta stats that saw him return to 3 bookings. However, through discussion with The FA, we’ve learned that their disciplinary department have him recorded with 4 bookings: presumably meaning that a fifth will still incur their wrath. We’ve therefore added him back to our tightrope for now until this can be clarified further.

GAMEWEEK 18 BANS

  • Alan Hutton (Aston Villa) – 1 Red for 2 Yellows (1 match)
  • Dan Gosling (Newcastle) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 3 matches)
  • Kyle Naughton (Norwich) – 5 Yellows (1 match)

SUSPENSION TIGHTROPE – FOUR BOOKINGS

  • Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)
  • Stiliyan Petrov (Aston Villa)
  • Míchel Salgado (Blackburn)
  • Nigel Reo-Coker (Bolton)
  • Paul Robinson (Bolton)
  • Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
  • Raul Meireles (Chelsea)
  • Ramires (Chelsea)
  • Chris Baird (Fulham)
  • Moussa Dembélé (Fulham)
  • Brede Hangeland (Fulham)
  • Danny Murphy (Fulham)
  • Steve Sidwell (Fulham)
  • Craig Bellamy (Liverpool)
  • Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle)
  • Glenn Whelan (Stoke)
  • Scott Parker (Tottenham)
  • Steven Reid (West Brom)
  • Paul Scharner (West Brom)
  • Richard Stearman (Wolves)

      I don't think he did.
Many a fullback gets skinned by the quick feet of Jarvis. Woodgate last week is a prime example - he was almost sent off inside 20mins having been turned inside out.

This may have been asked, but is Silva due an assist for Johnson’s goal. I think he was the last City player to touch the ball.
And also, who hoofed the ball forward for Sessegon’s goal against QPR? No assist seems to have been given for this on FPL as yet and i’m hoping for another 3 points for Wes ‘goal poacher’ Brown

Was I watching a different passage of play? Wasn't Silva dispossessed by the defender inside the box who then kicked it out of the box? I'll have to go back and have another look at MotD.

Can't see it-he lost the ball in the penalty area and the defender controlled it and then made a horrendous pass-there was no positive intervention by Silva-would make a mockery of any assist rule as he had messed up.

          I'd consider:
          Larsson > Drenthe GW 19.
Ba > Sturridge GW 18/19 (he's leaving for ACON around GW 20ish so you have to get rid anyway)
Raylor > Enrique as Newcastles def looks like it has issues.

Looking for help on which DGW players to bring in from now onwards as I currently only have 1 (Adebayor). Thinking about taking an 8 point hit in GW20 for the following trades - good plan?

    Westwood, Ruddy
    Vermaelen, Brown, Caulker, Simpson, Wilko
    Silva, Nani, Ramsey, Sinclair, Reo-Coker

Forget about Chopatoni. Waste of a 4pt hit, but I suspect you are doing it to fund the other trades?

I would do Rooney-->Helguson[vs NOR(h)] or Sturridge to fund dvd/Bale. Keep Nani as Newc are shipping goals left right and centre.

I've got a feeling something might happen. A similar thing happened in Aus, where a player got his 5th yellow, but knew that he'd be on Olyroos duty for the next game. But the FFA still made sure his suspension counted for one game where he would actually play, meaning he still missed the game after the Olyroos game. If that makes sense...

That does make sense, a whole lot more sense than a player missing a ban in a game they can't actually play in!

Exactly. So he didn't play for 2 weeks in other words. Whether the FA will do something, I don't know.

Then again, Naughton has been brilliant this season. I want them to do nothing!

Thoughts on these transfers up until the DGW

GW18: Jones and Wilkinson to Evans and Shotton (-4)
    GW19: Ba to Ade
GW20: Mata to VDV and Silva to Bale (-4)

      GW18: Jones > Evans is fine, but Wilko > Shotton for a 4 point hit? I wouldn't..
      GW19: Looks good.
GW20: I'd reconsider this later, Chelsea are playing Wolves that week - it's highly plausible that VDV or Bale won't get 4 points more than him so the hit wouldn't be worth it. Silva > Bale/VDV looks fine depending on how much ££ you're gona lose.

There's a bit of confusion here, protection happens AFTER the flag is taken off and freezes your price. That's not happening to Ade. What's happening to Ade is what happens when you're flagged - it takes more transfers to fall - around half more.

So: Ade will fall at around 150%. Keep an eye on FISO.

Ah I see you're rooting for the fall! Boooo! 😀 don't count on FPL with their flagging. Very arbitrary sometimes, way behind FFS news. Protection also has been ignored I think this year, your very own VDV failed to be protected after returning from flag. That's why he's fallen so far.

Regardless of Jones' injury, is the squad better?

Yes, watching brief advised. I can think of at least 3 times this season that a player has been reported out for 1 month+ on the night of the injury, only to line out again in a game or 2. Plus did I hear correctly that Hernandez is now back in contention?

Guys, looking at one of two sets of transfers for a 4 point hit. Which one looks best?

    a) Jones - Caulker and Adebayor - Rooney

    b) Jones - Caulker and Dyer - Bale (if Bale plays tonight)

A obviously loses a DGW-er and B gaines one, but A gives me Rooney for two easy fixtures. Already have Nani btw...
