[sbu_large_image] Suspensions

It may seem a little mundane in the light of the more headline-grabbing disciplinary matters this week, but the sheer number of games at this time of year means that cards and suspensions come along at a rate of knots, so keeping on top of them can give you the edge you may need over your rivals.

Peering through the mists created by the Luis Suarez decision, you will have seen that Kyle Naughton disappeared from our suspension tightrope on Tuesday night and was bundled away into the isolation of a one-match ban. However, as tweeted and picked up in the Scout Notes yesterday morning – this suspension will be served against parent club Spurs, in a match he would have missed anyway due to his loan arrangement. Replacing Naughton on the Suspension Tightrope this morning will be Fabricio Coloccini. The Newcastle skipper earned his fourth yellow card of the season for a foul on Peter Odemwingie late on in the loss to West Brom and will face a one-game suspension if he is booked in either of the next two games against Bolton or Liverpool.

In addition to Coloccini, Fulham defender Chris Baird and Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy also received their fourth cautions in last night’s games. Baird joins the massed ranks from Fulham for a foul on Danny Welbeck after 62 mins of the comprehensive defeat to Manchester United, with Bellamy the sole Liverpool representative thanks to a show of dissent in the 0-0 draw with Wigan. They, too, will now run the two-game gauntlet until the criteria is extended to 10 yellows before a ban kicks in.

Next up, in the dying stages of Aston Villa’s defeat to Arsenal last night, Villa’s ex-Spurs full-back Alan Hutton was sent off for 2 yellow cards in the space of 80 injury time seconds to earn a (slightly) early bath. His first, for a show of dissent after 92 minutes, was quickly followed by the second, for a rash tackle on Thomas Vermaelen. He’ll now be missing for the Boxing Day clash at Stoke.

And finally, we are trying to clear up a little confusion surrounding Wolves defender Richard Stearman. Avid readers of these pages may remember, that having appeared on the tightrope in Gameweek Fourteen, Stearman was duly removed following an update to the Opta stats that saw him return to 3 bookings. However, through discussion with The FA, we’ve learned that their disciplinary department have him recorded with 4 bookings: presumably meaning that a fifth will still incur their wrath. We’ve therefore added him back to our tightrope for now until this can be clarified further.

GAMEWEEK 18 BANS

  • Alan Hutton (Aston Villa) – 1 Red for 2 Yellows (1 match)
  • Dan Gosling (Newcastle) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 3 matches)
  • Kyle Naughton (Norwich) – 5 Yellows (1 match)

SUSPENSION TIGHTROPE – FOUR BOOKINGS

  • Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)
  • Stiliyan Petrov (Aston Villa)
  • Míchel Salgado (Blackburn)
  • Nigel Reo-Coker (Bolton)
  • Paul Robinson (Bolton)
  • Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
  • Raul Meireles (Chelsea)
  • Ramires (Chelsea)
  • Chris Baird (Fulham)
  • Moussa Dembélé (Fulham)
  • Brede Hangeland (Fulham)
  • Danny Murphy (Fulham)
  • Steve Sidwell (Fulham)
  • Craig Bellamy (Liverpool)
  • Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle)
  • Glenn Whelan (Stoke)
  • Scott Parker (Tottenham)
  • Steven Reid (West Brom)
  • Paul Scharner (West Brom)
  • Richard Stearman (Wolves)

    Hi,

Stoke fan here, thought i'd give my view on the Shotton scenario.

The downturn in results a few weeks ago led to Pennant being dropped for a poor attitude, Shotton has benefitted from this and the fact that Delap cannot play every week at his age.

However, Shotton isn't a right winger and, whilst his long throws are fairly useful, the rest of his wing-play is massively inferior to Pennant's.

On top of this Pennant has come on as a sub in the last few games and done well (last night aside) but Pulis has been reluctant to change a winning team - this ended with last night's spanking.

Basically, it might be worth a risk as Shotton is Oop and costs 4 million, but I'd expect Pennant to be back soon.

If you can afford it, get Walters instead (I dropped him for Ramsey when Arsenal's fixtures looked tasty and he''s been kicking my a*$ every week since).

Cheers Timski, while we're at it - what are your thoughts on Etherington? He served me very well last season and looks to be hitting form of late, you think he could be worth a look?

He had an awful start to the season but is coming back to form.

Stoke rely alot on a solid back 4 and hard working centre mids with the creativity coming from the flanks (which is why Shotton will get replaced with Pennant soon) so Etherington is guaranteed starts.

Worth noting though that the last few seasons he was on pens which gave him 3-4 goals (plus bonus) but Walters has pinched these so he isn't as much of a bargain as before.

And he does get injured - alot. I'd get Walters if I have the cash (which i will after getting rid of jones :))

I would say so, i'd wait on Jones news though.

Get's rid of two people who probably won't play and if anyone is worth a 4 point hit it's Nani with his next 2.

If we get Hernandez news then Jones > Evans and Dzeko > Hernandez might help avoid a hit.

Yeh I wouldnt go more than 2 Everton players to be honest. Remember they are hardly scoring many or keeping many cleanies, plus one of their games that week is against an on form Spurs side.

I will be getting the full Spurs compliment though

It's saying on Sky Sports News that Defoe will be left out of Spurs team because of the death of his cousin.

Good news for VDV owners (not meaning to be disrespectful to Defoe or his poor cousin by the way) as he'll maybe be handed the supporting striker role and hopefully he'll start looking back to his best

    think im there

    aguero, gower, drenthe out
    sturridge, nani, surman in

    4pt hit

can get drenthe back in for the double easily enough if he continues to start

I swear I am not Chris Brunt, despite the fact that I seem to mention him quite a bit! However, he must be one of the the most underrated player in the game. He's now scored 6 assists this season, one goal, 10 bps (possibly more after last night) and, with Odemwingie back in form, he'll probably get a lot more assists. He has good fixtures, is on all set pieces and is only 5.8m.

Despite this, the only time I ever hear him mentioned is in posts saying 'Brunt out for X'? Nobody's ever looking to bring him in! He's definitely a 'phase' player, but this is acceptable in others who are described as 'explosive' - Is he really that unfashionable a player?

    Morning All,

Finally a good week moved up 100k. Worse season ever so far.

    Vorn Westwood
    Kompany Jones Enrique Simpson Wilkinson
    Drenthe Silva Nani Bale Gower
    Adebayor Baa RVP

    2FT 0.5 in bank
Gonna do Jones to Evans once we know news, but Im tempted with the cash it frees up to do Drenthe>Valencia for the next two weeks, worth it? Or stick and save transfer. Thanks

I wouldnt. A consequence of Jones' injury could be that Valencia goes RB and Smalling goes into the middle like last night.

    Currently have
    Vorm
    JEnrique/Baines/

and left with Naylor (injured), MaCauley(mcy), Ward (ars)

Is it worth a 4 pointer to get in a defender for Ward? Will have 4.9 mil

Generally not a good idea to do a 4ph for a defender, but at least Swansea are at home to QPR. If anything, I'd do Ward > Caulker... but playing Ward and just hoping for the best might do.

lads right now I can afford Baines Dyer to Evans Valencia, but I have to do it before price drop/rise. My other option would be to ship Bale out and get Vermaleen instead of Evans and bring in Etherington>Drenthe along with Valencia for a 4 pt hit...

Thing is I want Bale, should I try to wait it out for Bale and do first move or just ship him and do second?

    Thanks!

    Morning all.

    Krul, Vorm
    Jones, Kompany, Evans, Simpson, NTaylor
    Silva, Nani, Bale, Walters, Dyer
    RVP, Sturridge, Ba

    1 FT, 0.7 in bank

Injuries are starting to mount up for me: Jones, Bale, Dyer, NTaylor.

What should I do with my free transfer to make sure I’m covered over Christmas period? I’d like to get Dyer out, but thinking maybe I need to make sure I’ve got enough defenders?

    Thanks!
