Expectations were high. We’ve had out fill of Christmas spirit, it was now left to Fantasy football to cheer us – to gift wrap a bountiful gameweek of goals and clean sheets. We anticipated a feast of football, we were fed warmed-up leftovers.

Lacklustre performances, rotating team-sheets and early substitutions conspired to produce what, so far, has been the most ordinary gameweek imaginable.

Cheslea’s tepid showing in the 1-1 draw with Fulham started proceedings, offering an early warning; Sir Alex Ferguson’s teamsheet then added to the frustration. Phil Jones’ absence was signposted, while the United boss understandably preserved his punch drunk starlet, the decision to rest Wayne Rooney to the bench took us all by surprise. While we will go into gameweek 19 anticipating heavy tinkering, Rooney was fully expected to be in the lineup and well placed for heavy profits when Wigan arrived at Old Trafford.

Another 5-0 scoreline, with a hat-trick for the forgotten Dimitar Berbatov, rubbed salt into this particular wound. The Bulgarian claiming his third goal from the spot, with Rooney on the pitch. There were further twists from United’s rout – with Jones absent, Jonny Evans was also denied a clean sheet, removed at half-time following a first half booking, nursing a calf injury. With a Nani blank, only those who had the foresight to acquire the slow-burning Antonio Valencia will come out of United’s canter with profit.

Elsewhere, we were left with scraps. City’s stalemate at the Hawthorns delivered another blank for Sergio Aguero, Liverpool once again struggled to notch goals – this time against basement club Blackburn, who also spoiled the anticipated clean sheet.

Only those who kept faith Newcastle’s assets following their recent slump, can really muster any satisfaction. Ryan Taylor marked his return to the starting lineup with an assist to accompany the Reebok cleanie, while Demba Ba again demonstrated his deadly consistency – his goal, a fourteenth of the season, sealed the three points and gave the Senegal striker six strikes in six games.

Even so, with just Stoke and Villa left to play, Boxing Day passed with whimper. Boozed-up and bloated, this was a soporific day which saw our Fantasy lineups do little but go through the motions. The holiday is over – get ‘em in early for training in the morning.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I say this humbly, after being scorched by Evans last year and a month ago........ the phrase, "well he's better than nothing"..... at least in this game, he's not. So I took my yearly beating last month and I was finished with him... he does try.

Haha...I'm not sure you knew that Rooney was going to be benched anymore than anyone else lol. 😉

...ah well...at least I got the 5-0 bit right 😛

TOT defenders? They've got 4 or 5 fixtures that are screaming cleenies at me.

I'd do it for GW20 as Liverpool have a great chance of a cleanie next week.

Typical Arsene, can be read a number of different ways. It would be cruel to bench RVP for this game. Makes more sense the next

so when i notice the deadline for the next gw and see 19.30 I thought we might get to see early rotatees. no such luck unless you're interested in Newcastle v Liverpool.....

    hi everyone,

i've been planning for the jan wc, and this is what i have so far. any feedback would be much appreciated.

    so currently, my team is:

    vorm, krul
kompany, evans, BAE, N taylor, caulker
    nani, silva, bale, drenthe, osman
    rvp, ade, stur

i have two different teams I have come up with:
    1)
    vorm, sorenson (krul>sorenson)
jones, enrique, evans, N taylor, caulker (kompany and BAE>jones and enrique)
nani, silva, bale, larsson, moses (drenthe and osman>larsson and moses)
rvp, ade, stur (no changes here)
    2)
    vorm, lindegaard (krul>lindegaard)
mcauley, kompany, evans, N taylor, caulker (BAE>mcauley)
nani, silva, bale, mata, surman (drenthe and osman>mata and surman)
rvp, ade, stur (no changes here)

so in the jan wc, would you a) keep my current team (but make a few other changes other osman after dgw) b) get team 1 c) get team 2

    thanks!

I like the look of team 1. Your team is pretty decent. I would ship Evans ASAP though. I think he is a liability. And I'm a utd fan.

I wouldn't analyse too much though. There could be injuries over nxt few weeks

Went Jones to Evans after reading Knee Jerk. Just came back here to see: "BBC have reported that Alex Ferguson has confirmed a calf injury for Jonny Evans with a two-week absence on the cards." Gutted.

Argh. Im in danger of getting knocked out of the cup by someone with a ranking in the 2,000,000s. To be fair, theyre only there they took a massive points hit early on, but still, the shame. RVP (c), my future in the cup may rest on your shoulders

Plan for the next 2 gameweeks:

    Aguero > Adebayor
    Walters > Bale
    Given > Sorenson

Will not involve any hits and have 0.1m spare to do these. If I do Given > Sorenson and Aguero > Adebayor this week, Bale can go up 0.1 before the next deadline and I will still be OK to get him in the week after this one.

    Any obvious problems?

    Thanks

Apparently the poll stayed open for about 8 hours longer than it was meant to, in which time Nani overtook him.But the scousers kicked up a big conspiracy fuss about it so Suarez will be winning after all.

Errr Van Persie anyone?! Gimp polls

Only because those moronic scousers hijacked the vote, much like the Raul Meireles award of signing of the season on ESPN, so there God won.

          Cute.

Glad that I went for Valencia instead of Nani. Hope that he can snatch the 2 bonus points!
