Gareth Bale is delighted with his new central role for Spurs. Yaya Toure is looking to delay his departure to the African Cup of Nations, while Phil Jones is hopeful of a return against old club Blackburn on Saturday:

Granted a more central role by Harry Redknapp in Spurs’ 2-0 win over Norwich on Tuesday evening, Gareth Bale ran amok with the freedom afforded by the newly-implemented 4-2-3-1 system. Bale’s Fantasy season continues to go from strength to strength and as the transfers-in continue to snowball ahead of a trip to Swansea, the Welshman admitted Redknapp’s change of formation is allowing him to flourish further:

It’s exciting, definitely. I’ve never really thought about playing through the middle but since people have been double marking and triple marking me, it is something I have had to bring into my game. It is great to be in there and I am enjoying it. I am improving all the time, especially in the free role. For a little while I’ve been coming off the line and getting in spaces. It is important I mix my game up and try and help the team rather than be stood out on the wing marked out of the game sometimes.

Fantasy owners of Phil Jones were given cause for optimism today, with the news that he expects to be ready to face former club Blackburn this weekend. Jones missed out in the 5-0 win over Wigan due to illness but according to the club’s official website, he’s on course for a return at Old Trafford this New Year’s Eve.

Yaya Toure has admitted he is hoping to put back his departure date for the upcoming African Cup of Nations tournament for as long as possible. The Ivory Coast squad is due to meet up on the 11th January but with Man City facing a hectic fixture schedule, Toure is hoping he can stay here until the 17th, meaning he would still be available for the club’s next three league games, including the gameweek 21 clash with Wigan.

As Liverpool’s struggles to impress as an attacking force continue, with just 5 goals in their last six games, Kenny Dalglish has heaped praise on the recent displays of Maxi Rodriguez. While new boys Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson have a single goal and no assists between them all season, the Argentine has netted twice in four starts and has now featured in the Liverpool first XI in three of the last four gameweeks.

Darren Bent is in contention to be available for Aston Villa’s trip to Chelsea on New Year’s Eve. The forward has missed the last three games due to a thigh strain but returned to training today ahead of the Stamford Bridge clash. Villa confirmed via their twitter feed this afternoon that Emile Heskey has been ruled out with an Achilles problem.

Alan Pardew confirmed yesterday that Demba Ba had picked up a knee knock ahead of Friday’s trip to Liverpool, much to the consternation of the Newcastle forward’s Fantasy owners. Reports today, however, suggest Ba is now expected to be fit for the Anfield clash. Having netted against the likes of Man United and Spurs, in addition to picking up an assist at Man City, Ba will hold no fear going into the Merseyside showdown, with 6 goals in his last six games indicative of his current form.

The injuries continue to rack up for Blackburn ahead of their trip to Old Trafford. Steve Kean’s selection options seem to be lessening by the day, with the news that both David Dunn and Junior Hoilett are battling to overcome hamstring injuries for the New Year’s Eve encounter. Kean also admitted Martin Olsson has only an “outside chance“ of featuring- the Swede is also suffering from a hamstring injury. With the likes of Scott Dann, Gael Givet and Ryan Nelsen all unavailable and Paul Robinson a doubt, Rovers will be fearing a repeat of last season’s 7-0 drubbing all over again.

Wolves are anxiously awaiting scans on Ronald Zubar’s knee problem after the defender was subbed off just after half-time in Tuesday’s draw at Arsenal. Zubar has not long returned from a six-month lay off and featured for the first time this season in gameweek 13. Mick McCarthy is also expecting to find out if the club’s appeal for the FA to rescind Nenad Milijas’ red card, picked up in the same match, will be rescinded.

Marouane Fellaini remains a doubt for Everton ahead of this weekend’s trip to West Brom. The Belgian is struggling to overcome an abductor strain that ruled him out of the trip to Sunderland, though David Moyes played his cards close to his chest, admitting he didn’t think the problem was “too bad”.

Robert Huth, Peter Crouch and Glenn Whelan are all injury worries for Tony Pulis ahead of Stoke’s home game with Wigan. The latter pair have missed the Potters’ last two games but Huth has now added to Pulis’ problems, after picking up a knock in the goalless draw against Aston Villa earlier this week. The Stoke boss clearly won’t be taking any risks, as he admitted:

We will check on all three of them over the next couple of days to see whether they will make it in time for Saturday. They are all key figures, but if they are not quite right, then it is important not to rush them back with so many games coming up. That is what it is all about at this time of the year, using the strength and depth of the squad when the games come thick and fast.

I know it's not for some time yet, but who are you thinking of captaining for the DGW?

I think choosing the right captain could be the difference between getting a 4 point captain and a 50 point captain. Slight exaggeration, but you get what I'm saying.

    Probably Ade for me.

Anyone else think that comments on a thread is a poor way to build a proper web community - this site is crying out for a forum IMO. Seems odd that we bury discussion on quality posts, rather than having dedicated RMT, Captain and news threads... If it's been discussed before it's impossible to know, as the site can't search posts properly. I for one would much rather a forum than chat room / blog format for user comments.

I agree that both the blog an comments part of the site are good, but the conversation is scrappy a best because of the amount of noise and lack of focus.

This is the thing though. Most of the RMT's are pretty similar anyway and the advice normally the same, maybe with a few minor differences, so people who were going to post a RMT, can take a look at someone elses and get the same advice they would have got anyway.

The only thing I'd really agree with here is the RMT section. It's a pain in the jacksies coming on here an hour or two before deadline to 1000 RMT's. I think the captains poll does a good enough job of showing who should be captained.

Are you a frequent user of forums? I've been using them for years and feel they are an excellent resource if administrated well.

The large part of the community missing here is user generated content. At the moment we can only comment on topics created by the admin staff. We cannot start new posts, that might help folk out.

It also presents an opportunity for the admin staff to review the content added by others - which might better inform them, and then us in turn.

Well I'm definitely with you on the RMT area. Captaincy I still feel is covered quite well by the captaincy poll but couldn't complain about more discussion either. Team news we already have a section for that 😛 Experts, very hard to say who's an expert in FF terms since everyone tends to get it wrong 😀 I'd like to say a general discussion page like this and then an RMT/Captaincy page available too.

I do use forums a lot. I think, given that the effort the guys put into keeping the site going as it is forums would become too demanding. I'd be more in favour of sub sections. Have a specific blog area of the site for RMTs. Maybe one for Captains. A lot of the other info on this site is more chat based stuff so I've never found that my experience was hampered without having forums. I think if people were more willing to stay on a page to continue a conversation instead of constantly flicking to the newest page the conversation would flow better than with forums.

"I think if people were more willing to stay on a page to continue a conversation instead of constantly flicking to the newest page the conversation would flow better than with forums."

Which isn;t really possible in the current format - I can't imagine many folks are even looking at this page of comments now. Forums, or a forum like area, would add a time-independant set of content that would flow a hell of a lot better.

I agree about the effort - this would of course mean that some of the long term members would need to be modded, and current admins look after them.

Anyway - it was just a thought - and I can see this page dropping off now, now so I think it's a valid point.

Lastly. I'd be happy to skin up a WP forum theme in this comment post style - to help push this.

Keeper dilemna, have Vorm in goal but expect the floodgates to open when Spurs arrive in Cardiff so contemplating playing Krul instead. With Suarez missing i'm wondering if we will see a low scoring game, if any goals at all.

    Anyone else contemplating benching Vorm?

Silva and RvP going to get 90 each? I doubt Silva will play full 90 and then play again in 3 days time. Mancini has said previously that Silva struggles to play back to back games! RvP will probably come on if they don't score or are losing, either way, I don't expect these 2 to play a significant role this week.

Man City are prioritising the Premiership big time, especially now they are out of the Champs. League. They would like the FA Cup, and don't want to lose to Man United, but it's 'been there, done that'....if Silva can only play one full game, it will be the prem.

    posted on wrong article

    RVP

after these 2 games they only have leeds in the cup where he wont feature before they face swansea. their fixtures are

    31 QPR
    2 fulham
    9 LEEDS
    15 swansea
    22 MUTD
    28 FA CUP

so he could be pushed through these 2 games in the knowledge that he’ll only play 3 maybe 4 games the following month (depending who they get in the 4th round of the cup)

Asked a few sensible Arsenal fans on twitter, and they all think that RVP will get a rest against QPR.

While they obviously aren't a 'one man team', the way their team is set up is based all around RVP, so him getting injured would be catastrophic for their season. Given RVP's history of injuries and inability to play many games in a short period of time, you'd have thought he'd get some rest over the Christmas period, and the QPR game is the only realistic option left.

Anyway, Arsenal *should* have enough to beat QPR, even without RVP.

If we had beaten Wolves then i would have said he'll definitely be rested, now, i'm not soo sure. plus there is this record he's going for. I think he'll start but there is enough doubt for me to captain someone else.

Booh. Was this close to convincing myself he would play, but might have to go with Nani now anyway

I think he'll start, and the annoying thing is, you know everyone else in your mini league will captain him, tricky decision.

nothing matters, the record, the wolves result, it's all irrelevant. all that matters in arsenal play fulham 2 days after QPR

I actually do think the record matters a lot to RVP.

If we assume it does he might put Wenger in a situation where he faces either falling out with his best player or taking a risk with the idea of resting him against Fulham instead. My gut feeling is that RVP will start.

+1, it matters, you could see that buy the way he played against Wolves, always looked to shoot first which he doesn't usually do. Plus, Wenger isn't like Ferguson, he's not as ruthless with his players.

            Good post.

And then there's always the pretty decent chance that what happened last time he was benched against Stoke happens again.

When did Arsenal last cruise past a team in the PL without him?

no way jose, i'd be more worried if rvp was the 20 year old that arrived from feyenoord but wenger is the boss and i hope he's sick of this record talk, no one will give a toss about the record in may
