Arsene Wenger is closing in on a loan deal for Thierry Henry. Chris Smalling is recovering from tonsillitis and is expected to be back next week, while Kenny Dalglish will continue to be cautious with the fitness of Steven Gerrard…

Sir Alex Ferguson has this morning dismissed reports suggesting Chris Smalling has glandular fever. The United boss confirmed in his press conference that the defender has tonsillitis and reckons Smalling “should” be ready for the game against Newcastle on 2nd January. Defensive concerns were the main topic for Ferguson, as he went on to admit:

We don’t have much change. Obviously injuries to the defenders are quite a concern now, with Jonny Evans taken off at half-time [on Monday]. We’re hoping Phil Jones will be fit, there’s possibly an outside chance that Rio Ferdinand will get on the bench. Other than that, we’re the same.

Arsene Wenger admitted this morning that Arsenal are closing in on a loan deal for Thierry Henry. While a sensational short-term return to the Emirates is on the cards for the Frenchman, Wenger revealed the deal is not year near completion:

Normally it should happen. You have to respect that there is paperwork to do and the agreement with the Red Bulls and the MLS, but for two months it is certain that it will happen. The agreement and the insurance [still needs to be done], I don’t take care of that, but that is not completed and we need to respect all the agreements we need with the MLS to finalise the deal. At the moment we cannot announce anything.

Wenger also confirmed Theo Walcott is “ok” after a stomach complaint forced him out of Tuesday’s draw with Wolves. Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs are both expected back by late January, while Jack Wilshere is progressing well and will return just after the full-backs. The Gunners boss also admitted that the fact that Robin Van Persie is chasing the Premier League goals record will have little influence on his team selection.

Gretar Steinsson and Sam Ricketts are both available for Bolton tomorrow as Owen Coyle’s side play host to Wolves. Joe Riley has also recovered from a hamstring problem, while the Trotters boss revealed that a fee has been agreed with Chelsea for the transfer of Gary Cahill. Darren Pratley has picked up a virus and has missed the last few days training.

Kenny Dalglish has insisted he will not rush Steven Gerrard back into the first-team fold as the Liverpool skipper continues his recovery from an ankle injury. Gerrard made his first appearance since gameweek 9 last time round, coming on as a late second half sub in the home draw against Blackburn and Dalglish will continue to be cautious with his captain’s fitness, saying:

He is back and looks even better than he did the last time he came back but we are not going to be irresponsible and throw him in and take a chance. We know he’s fit and we know he just needs game time; in the same way as we monitored him through the last time and we’ll do the same this time. He has been frustrated but I think he feels the bad luck may be behind him and he deserves a bit of good fortune.

Paul Lambert confirmed in his press conference this morning that Marc Tierney is still 50-50 for Norwich’s next two games. The left-back had been the Canaries only ever-present prior to last Tuesday’s clash with Spurs but a groin injury forced him out and has offered Adam Drury a chance to step up into the first XI. Lambert also revealed Ritchie De Laet suffered a recurrence of a back problem and is being assessed ahead of the home clash with Fulham.

With on-loan Steven Caulker unavailable to face parent club Spurs, Garry Monk will return to the Swansea first-team this gameweek. Brendan Rodgers revealed Neil Taylor is expected to return at left-back after recovering from a knee problem, while Angel Rangel faces a late fitness test on his ankle, after suffering a recurrence of his injury in the game against QPR.

Ooooh, not normally a fan of taking a hit for a defender, but in your case...

Can you afford to bring in a DGWer? At least that way you'll know you will make back the 4 points at least over the next couple of weeks.

Th only niggling bit of doubt I have about Rooney (c) is the dreaded midfield role. The annoying thing is seeing as the Utd game is 1245 tomorrow we'll probably know his position before the normal deadline tim of 1130; curse the stupid Liverpool game!

Have Wenger and SAF already given their pre-match press conferences?

The reality is we don't know if he will play or not, as is the case with many of the other players this Gameweek, look at Rooney vs Wigan last week? I had my hopes pinned on him and he was on the bench for most of the game.

Hello everyone, first time in a week I managed to get online, got a couple of minutes and would like to ask some quickes since I can't seem to access fiso, can anyone please inform the percentage of rising/falling of BAE, VDV and Osman?

Made some blind transfers the last 2 gws and I can't afford to do more risky punts with the dgwcoming up so any info is much appreciated.

Happy new year to all of you in advanced 😀 wishing you all more and more green arrows and less rotation at United.

    OK - let's do this.
Captaincy: If Wenger starts RvP at home to QPR, it would be another case of poor man management.
He played Fabregas against Stoke away, in a FA Cup game in 2010 while we were gunning for all trophies.
Cesc played one more game and was pretty mch done for the season. Wenger has form.
But, I'm going to pretend that he'll do the right thing and save RvP for Fulham away- when he will be needed.

Nani- should start against Blackburn having only played an hour last time. Explosive returns are a possibility but so is another 3 pointer.
Bale - FORM. Swansea were not impressive at all last time around, I expect an easy Spuds win. Bale will start and contribute.

To summarise, I don't have a clue what to do but based on the above, Nani (c) with a safe Bale (vc) might be the best option....but you never know with Arsene..

    ok, so rate this move:
i do ba>sturridge for free before the deadline.
i let the deadline pass and do aguero and walters >ade and bale for the dgw, beating bale's price rise and therefore leaving me with 0.0 in the bank

of course i will carry the risk of one of them getting injured or suspended or any other member of my team getting red flagged. But if want sturridge, ade AND bale, ill have to take the risk.

Funny how people seem to think there's something wrong with Koscielny and Agger, when having Vermaelen and Enrique is perfectly fine, if not the norm.

Ramsey is a good FPL prospect, he's just been desperately unlucky so far. Ramires is a punt and Johnson is just bench fodder to allow me to afford Rooney, RVP, Nani etc..

I bought Silva for 9.5M and would lose 1M on him. And Silva seems to be a consistent performer... Any thoughts?

You don't lose 1m on him, you lose 0.5m and since he's likely to fall soon, probably a max of 0.4m.

Will someone please give me a reason NOT to choose ADE as (C) it is totally driving me crazy!

        Alternatives RVP/Nani/Sturridge/Mata/Silva/Jones

Looks like my opponent in CUP will captain RVP with Silva as (V). HE has not changed this combo for 6 GWs.

          I will.

Your opponent is likely to captain RVP so you should captain RVP as the damage may be huge if you don't.

            Thanks I.T.

Good point. I am just so afraid of that 20 min cameo appearance by RVP.

In that case who to (V). Nani is not 100% nailed on either. I would be sick if i had a week without a (C)

I'd play Simpson of those options. If BAE is in your plans anyway then getting him wouldn't be a bad idea.

I guess most people are in the same position with Evans this week...

Perhaps I am being unrealistic or overly optimistic but has Fergie said definitively that he is out? It doesn't come across that way from the comments in his press conference.

If I can't play him I may have to play one of Simpson or Brown... or take a hit 👿

I think this could be Fergie mind games. I reckon he was taken off as he had been yellow carded and United cant afford to have him get a red and be suspended.

He didn't say one way or the other in the presser. What was interesting however, is the official Man United Facebook page posted up a pic of Rooney and Evans in training yesterday.

        Potential wildcard team

        Krul; Sorenson

Shawcross; Taylor R; BAE; Shotton; Caulker

        Nani; Mata; Dempsey; Bale; Ferguson

        RVP; Adebayor; Sturridge

only dodgy choice is ferguson but iv seen people keep him all season and not require his services once

I have a second team with Ferguson in it which has had much less problems of squad depth than my main team. It's not ideal, especially with someone like Surman just 0.3 more, but it can work.

            Balanced response. Well done.

I like it Transferaddict but I'm not sure Mata is worth it. You already have Sturridge as Chelsea cover and I think if you want to double up you could get someone less extravagant like Ramires and invest that cash into making one of your defenders a big hitter.

Agree with Vilmorez...... Surman (Maybe moses too)

In above WC team why not do ShawX for Smalling (when healthy i recon nailed on). You still would have Stoke Def cover with Shotton. Could always bring in Wilko if Shotton sits. At same time getting MANU def cover.

This would free up cash for Surman or Moses instead of Fergie.
