The giants are being cut down to size with alarming regularity. Bobby Zamora’s at the death volley, sweetly struck inside Wojciech Szczesny’s near post, was another blow applied to the Premier League’s big boys. This was just the latest in a line of recent upsets that have seen United, City and Chelsea lose to middle ground opponents as the New Year programme continued to provide Fantasy managers an unpredictable passage into 2012.

The Craven Cottage result also marked the end of another unremarkable day in Fantasy terms. Robin Van Persie again failed to deliver returns (it’s becoming a nasty habit now), ironically in a gameweek that will have seen thousands switch their attention, and their captain’s armbands, to double gameweek prospects in the Spurs and Everton ranks. With such slim pickings from Monday’s five games – the expectation on players form those two teams to produce is now weightier than ever.

Chelsea did at least make a recovery from the winding dished out by Villa at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. The Blues’ 2-1 win at Molineux today was a battle, a scrap that was missed by Didier Drogba and, more significantly, Daniel Sturridge.

We did at least get early warning of the striker’s potential absence and Chelsea have today confirmed that their leading scorer and Fantasy asset missed the midlands trip with a contusion to his hip – brusing in other words. His 16% ownership will be hoping that the timely break for FA Cup duty will be enough to see Sturridge make a return. Andre Villas-Boas has even indicated he could make the cup tie with Portsmouth. Regardless of his expected recovery time, with January wildcards fluttering, we’re already seeing an alarming decline in confidence.

Patience will be paper thin leading up to gameweek 21. With FPL managers handed the opportunity to refresh their squads, the dead wood will be shed. The trick of course, is to correctly identify those surplus to requirements – a Chelsea striker who has delivered well above his modest price tag and who is playing for a Euro 2012 spot, may not fall into this category. In ruthless times however, Sturridge has already become a casualty. Already he’s seen more sales in the gameweek than any other player.

Looking closer at the current FPL transfer trends – the likes of David Silva, Nani, Sergio Aguero, Ryan Taylor and even Jose Enrique are ranked at the very top of the transfers out right now. These players have been giants this season – consistent scorers who have served their Fantasy owners well. Let’s get this clear – these are transfers after the gameweek 20 deadline, they are not victims of the scramble for double gameweek assets but players cast aside, presumably as part of a wildcard shopping sprees inspired by another disappointing return.

The last few days have seen the Premier League elite humbled – clearly this has dented the confidence of some Fantasy managers. The thing about the Premier League’s best, however, is that once toppled, they do tend to get up again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

3rd hit of the season (if any of you are interested):

    GW8 Gabbidon ➡ Woodgate. -4 points overall.

Reason: Gabbidon was injured and I wanted Woodgate (FUL) to play instead of Brown (ars).

Stoke got a clean sheet at home and Brown got a yellow card and 0 points. But of course, Woodgate did not play and Brown came on anyway. Trying to eliminate the hindsight, I think it was silly to take in an injury prone defender. Had he played, I would only have gained 2-4 points, so statistically, if done several times, this kind of hit can not really gain you anything.

Lesson: Again, do not take a hit, trying to get a clean sheet. Just hold off a GW or two.

The maxim I apply when taking hits is only take hits on people with a chance of BPs. And those are players with assist or goalscoring chances. That includes attacking defenders, attacking midfielders and forwards. The BPs often pay off much of the hit.

i keep telling him that. He is way too rich when compared to anybody else here. Anyways give me your wc team. let's see if i can pick something out from there. btw i have dropped plans for aguero. i like adebayor, rvp and sturridge as a forward line. Also consider ireland in midfield. The guy was superb for city 2 yrs back.

I have a good feeling about Mr. Sergio Leonel Aguero, hoping for that 0.1 drop or Yakubu another rise to be able to afford the team I want, currently 0.1 off but surely I will get there 😕 Really confused about what to do with Nani/Valencia at the moment...

I will tell you again. Think real hard about ireland. He is a fantastic player in terms of fpl.
As for nani/valencia, after 12 days united injuries are bound to disappear to some extent in the defense and midfield. This will mean valencia sharing game time with nani/parks/giggs. I think valencia's run is over. If he was classed as a defender, he would be a must-buy. But i don't think any longer as a midfielder.

Please share your defense line with your two gk's atleast.

Ireland just isn't getting the game time at the moment.
With Valencia, he has been on fire at right back and midfield, meaning he is probably more likely to start with his versatility.
My defence + 2 GK's is the part I don't really like haha, there is no shock picks anywhere.
All that is changed is I have Shotton/Caulker/Kelly in there for Simpson/Walker/N.Taylor now.

im similar to you,,,im sticking until last week of WC or else the 2nd last week.
Last week means Jan window will be closed so you will have a clearer picture of whats what.
However the 2nd last week has midweek evening fixtures for Man Utd, Chelsea , Lpool, Ars and Spurs so you will have starting 11 available just before deadline altho REAL window will still be open for a few hours after that so one or two things could change but at least you will have guaranteed starters gw 23.

          haha!!!
Your comment reaches me a little late as i just confirmed my wild card, so if i didn't know it wouldn't have helped.
But one of the main reasons i played my jan wc early was to patch up my defence and also since i have the other wc left.
So if needs be who know maybe i will join you and play my 2nd wild card on feb 4th.

at the moment, I am keeping Mata, as fixtures is on there side and he is getting close to good points every week. If Chelsea don't improve after buying a few in January I'll probably go Mata > Dempsey.

Keeping, his recent low scores are more to do with fixture congestion and City's rotation than any great failing on his part. Made a visible difference when he came on against Sunderland. Unusually vital to such a big team, their play goes through him. It's only a few GWs ago when he scored the winner against Arsenal...

I can't see any better options for straight switches right now. I have 0 in the bank its all tied up in my team so I won't be able to do major upgrading elsewhere. Fixture-wise,

GW22 (ditch Utd, Spurs & invest in City/Che/Ars/Ful/Qpr) & GW30 (invest in Tot/Liv) seems to be the turn-around in fixtures.

United are pointless for investment in easy fixtures, bar Nani. As the past 2-3 GWs have shown, you have a certain SAF who rules OT.

My opinion may change in the jan transfer window. But IMO Utd/Chelsea/Ars are form-based teams, depend on a few individual performances that drive them. Whereas Tot/MC/Liv are more predictable since they have several key players driving their team.

I hope cahill is a confirmed signing for chelsea in the next few days. He will be ideal for my budget. But then i guess everyone will get him too as he is so cheap compared to the other chelsea defenders.

The only other dedicated CBs are Terry and Luiz... Ivanovic can fill in when required. Still, Terry and Luiz will both be difficult to dislodge. Starts could be hard to come by and starts are vital to get the 60 minute CS.

Well, always understood Valencia was brought in to be a winger and Fab/Raf as fullbacks - Valencia playing RB is just an OOP compromise to cover for their absence. SAF would probably play a defender instead of an OOP winger.

All right. Episode 4/7 in the point hit soul search is here (better tang?):

    GW10 -4 points: Bosingwa/Arteta/Nani ➡ Shawcross/Walters/VDV

Reason: Had 2 FT, but thought all three transfers looked good, and did not want to compromise. 7 points + over the next 4 GWs (swapped VDV and Shawcross out again for GW14). I also wanted to cash in on Bosingwa before he started to fall, and not let VDV and Walters rise any further.

This is my only successful point hit this season. A good defender for one that was performing appallingly. VDV who hit some form and Nani which was out of it. And OOP Walters for CDM Arteta. Also I got the ride the bandwagon of value on two of the players.

Isolated Arteta-Walters was the "worst" transfer point wise, as they only broke even. But that gave me a difference of 0.5-0.6 in team value, and it is still paying off pointwise.

If there is a lesson here (mostly for myself, mind) its that it seems easier to make up for hits for in form and/or constant performers be they offensive players.
