The giants are being cut down to size with alarming regularity. Bobby Zamora’s at the death volley, sweetly struck inside Wojciech Szczesny’s near post, was another blow applied to the Premier League’s big boys. This was just the latest in a line of recent upsets that have seen United, City and Chelsea lose to middle ground opponents as the New Year programme continued to provide Fantasy managers an unpredictable passage into 2012.

The Craven Cottage result also marked the end of another unremarkable day in Fantasy terms. Robin Van Persie again failed to deliver returns (it’s becoming a nasty habit now), ironically in a gameweek that will have seen thousands switch their attention, and their captain’s armbands, to double gameweek prospects in the Spurs and Everton ranks. With such slim pickings from Monday’s five games – the expectation on players form those two teams to produce is now weightier than ever.

Chelsea did at least make a recovery from the winding dished out by Villa at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. The Blues’ 2-1 win at Molineux today was a battle, a scrap that was missed by Didier Drogba and, more significantly, Daniel Sturridge.

We did at least get early warning of the striker’s potential absence and Chelsea have today confirmed that their leading scorer and Fantasy asset missed the midlands trip with a contusion to his hip – brusing in other words. His 16% ownership will be hoping that the timely break for FA Cup duty will be enough to see Sturridge make a return. Andre Villas-Boas has even indicated he could make the cup tie with Portsmouth. Regardless of his expected recovery time, with January wildcards fluttering, we’re already seeing an alarming decline in confidence.

Patience will be paper thin leading up to gameweek 21. With FPL managers handed the opportunity to refresh their squads, the dead wood will be shed. The trick of course, is to correctly identify those surplus to requirements – a Chelsea striker who has delivered well above his modest price tag and who is playing for a Euro 2012 spot, may not fall into this category. In ruthless times however, Sturridge has already become a casualty. Already he’s seen more sales in the gameweek than any other player.

Looking closer at the current FPL transfer trends – the likes of David Silva, Nani, Sergio Aguero, Ryan Taylor and even Jose Enrique are ranked at the very top of the transfers out right now. These players have been giants this season – consistent scorers who have served their Fantasy owners well. Let’s get this clear – these are transfers after the gameweek 20 deadline, they are not victims of the scramble for double gameweek assets but players cast aside, presumably as part of a wildcard shopping sprees inspired by another disappointing return.

The last few days have seen the Premier League elite humbled – clearly this has dented the confidence of some Fantasy managers. The thing about the Premier League’s best, however, is that once toppled, they do tend to get up again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Three WC teams to choose from, focusing on defence, midfield, and strikers. Which one would you pick?

    A) BIG DEFS
    Vorm Sorenson
    Baines Richards Enrique Evans Rangel
    Sinclair Bale Nani Dempsey Moses
    RVP Sturridge Ade

    B) BIG MIDS
    Vorm Sorenson
    Caulker Kelly Enrique Evans Rangel
    Gerrard Bale Nani Mata Pilkington
    RVP Sturridge Ade

    C) BIG FWDS
    Vorm Sorenson
    Caulker Kelly Enrique Evans Rangel
    Walters Bale Nani Larsson Moses
    RVP Rooney Aguero

Take A. Lose Baines for another defender who will give you some attacking jollies and try to get Aguero instead of Ade.

Walker and Aguero instead of Baines and Ade...? Neatly compensates for losing Spurs attacking coverage.

Trying to resist the urge to wildcard (still have both). Any ideas for how best to use my freebie this week (likely to wildcard during GW23 for the GW24 games, so it's a 3 week play....) Thanks!

Define your WC objective & take it from there.

For me its to utilize the turnaround in fixtures. Hence, Gw22.

I'd say the fixtures turnaround in GW24, ie. MCY fixtures get great and MAN, TOT, LIV and ARS's get tough. I'll then likely use my 2nd wildcard for GW28, when this reverses...

City's fixtures are great from gw21 itself. Home vs TOT isn't too hard a fixture for them. Tot's & Utd's fixtures stiffens from gw22 itself. Not even considering Liv. Ars has BLA in gw24 - so not sure what you meant.

You can make a case for both GW22 and GW24 being a turning point. It probably also depends on what your squad is.

For e.g. if you wildcard in GW22, you'll likely unload TOT and MUN players, but then in GW23 they have easy fixtures. As for MCY, (TOT and eve) aren't exactly prime fixtures either. I'd likely still have RVP (and maybe Ramsey) for the BLA game, and then Ramsey would become someone else (one of the other good mid 6m mids).

True that. Depends on the team.

Also, need to get Silly back ASAP - feel real nervous about not owning him. Having the 2nd WC motivates me to use this one earlier. But if you can stick by till gw24, you could wait to hear on all the latest signings.

First thought is: Lindegaard instead of Sorenson

Transfer point hit soul search, Episode 5/7.

    GW14 -8 points: Shawcross/VDV/Drenthe ➡ Baines/Bale/Ben Arfa

Reason: Wanted Bale and Baines, which also meant downgrading Drenthe to get the funds. The thought was to have Baines until GW23.

All in all, this deal did not go all bad. Over the next 4 weeks it went in 0, and with the two "teams" missing 3 vs 4 matches each. So I did not gain points. Did I gain anything else? Well as it turns out, Baines and Bale suddenly burst into points for GW18 and 19. So then my plan had actually succeeded. Cool! No?

No. Because in GW18 I decided to take another -8 points, to get in Nani (for Moses, will you forgive me Holy One?) and Evans for Baines (damage control, I called it). So not only did I topple my grand plan which was succeeding, but I also weakened my side doing it. Double loss. How bad wasnt that? More on that in the next episode.

Btw, my GW14 "INs" are currently leading with 20 points (hit included).

    Lesson: Stick with the plan.

I find this too. I also sometimes find that sticking with the original plan would have been better. Why oh why did I desperately get Rooney in for gw19, for example, when it had never been in my plans at all? It was just fear of what he might do after a rest. Argh.

crappy wind has me up since 5am, when best time to wild card? i dont know weather to get on it early and try and catch some price rises or hold out and see what happens in the transfer window? im leaning towards the later because my squad value is 110mil, is this above average? wish you could still see everyones like the old site!

    dumped sturridge for yakubu.

another dumb decision. not that the move may not be a good one, but i chased prices rising/falling rather than wait closer to the deadline. So now 12 days for any gw20 i have left to get injured, or injury in training or FA Cup, or whatever. way too much time for a more pressing move to present itself. Naughty Fuzzy.

Kelly has impressed Jol through Europa. Though Baird is a decent option for him as well.

Hughes looks to be out of favour this season & highly injury-prone. Makes Senderos more nailed-on than Kelly. Threat from set-pieces as well.

So Gylfi Sigurdsson is on loan to Swansea for the rest of the season. To steal 'Arry's analogy he is a "top top player", better than anyone Swans have right now and worth 4.5m (?) Of anyone's money if fit.

If I get the stats correctly, Sturridge was 4 transfers short of price drop - nice!
Maybe he won't fall more than 0,2 this gw after all.

I was very close of doing stur => yak, because of injury & price fall & price rise, but decided to stay calm. Hopefully this is rewarded and sturridge plays against sunderland!

Too early for Cahill imo. Not sure he will go straight into the starting lineup and dramatically change things. Best to take a wait and see approach with him for at least 1 or 2 starts. Gabby looks like a shrewd option but I think Albrighton is too much, he won't be a regular starter. Warnock too is a bit of a risk, as are your keepers.

Transfer point hits soul search episode 6/7:

    GW18 -8 points: Baines/Moses/Aguero ➡ Evans/Nani/Sturridge

Reason: Restructuring the squad when taking out Baines again after a bad spell in my team.

After two GWs I am on minus 29 points. This hit has so far turned out to be disastrous. And being so close to the January WC, it will be very hard to make up for. Having already transferred out Evans, it is up to Nani and Sturridge to regain that lead, but I fear Aguero, Baines and Moses will score heaps.

To add to the misery, I transferred Baines out, just as my previous -8 point hit form GW14 was starting to pay off.

Many lessons to be learned from this, but the main one must be to just lay off the this close to the wild cards.

My policy at the start of the season was to be more generous with point hits. The last 6 posts has tried to analyse that strategy.

So to summarize (totals are circa numbers and does not take subs into account):

-6 points total to gain 0.3 in real team value
-4 points total to transfer in Vorm away to Arsenal
-8 points total and -0.3 team value for Gabbidon ➡ Woodgate
+7 points total and +0.5 team value for getting Walters, VDV and Shawcross
0 points total for restructuring the team to get in Baines (could have been a healthy 20+)
-29 and counting for doing Baines/Moses/Aguero ➡ Evans/Nani/Sturridge. Getting rid of Moses for the second time obviously instilled the Wrath of God on my squad.

Looking back it is fair to say that I wont be taking more hits to get in defenders. I have said that this is a myth. But I must now eat those words. Maybe the only exception is Baines, which when in form is exceptional FPL-wise.

The only time a point hit which really worked so far this season, was geting rid of Bosingwa, Arteta and Nani. Another one that would have worked, was the "Getting in Baines 2011" campaign, which I foolishly ended before I had gone through with it.

Have learnt some things from going through this, but I wont conclude anything at this point. Except maybe that I will take less point hits for the 2nd half of the season.

    Thanks for reading.

Now off to take a hit for Drenthe ➡ Moses

    Vorm l Lindegaard
    Kompany l Shotton l Caulker l Simpson l BAE(or Cahill CHE)
    Valencia l Nani l Silva l Bale l Moses
    RVP l Yakubu l Adebayor

Worth having both Valencia and Nani? Do I need chelsea coverage?

If Lindegaard becomes no.1, it's nice rotation.

    Should I keep Sturridge?

Next game of Chelsea v Sunderland looks good but Chelsea form and Sunderland improvement by MON, who just shut down Man City, make me doubt.. Also, I just got him so afraid to lose my precious value during this 2-week Gwk.. 😕

Would there be any short-term alternatives that could outscore him?

    A: Sturridge … SUN , nor
    B: Bellamy … STO , bol
    C: Odemwingie … NOR , sto
    D: Balotelli/Dzeko … wig , TOT
    E: Zamora … bla , NEW

Too bad that City rotation is too headache. Is Bellamy or Odemwingie ok?

yes, he is good value and worth hanging onto. May even play in the central role once Drogba shoots off and Chelsea buy a new winger

I see your point, Ryan. Even I want to sell him, I still can't find reason why I should sell.. 😕
