The giants are being cut down to size with alarming regularity. Bobby Zamora’s at the death volley, sweetly struck inside Wojciech Szczesny’s near post, was another blow applied to the Premier League’s big boys. This was just the latest in a line of recent upsets that have seen United, City and Chelsea lose to middle ground opponents as the New Year programme continued to provide Fantasy managers an unpredictable passage into 2012.

The Craven Cottage result also marked the end of another unremarkable day in Fantasy terms. Robin Van Persie again failed to deliver returns (it’s becoming a nasty habit now), ironically in a gameweek that will have seen thousands switch their attention, and their captain’s armbands, to double gameweek prospects in the Spurs and Everton ranks. With such slim pickings from Monday’s five games – the expectation on players form those two teams to produce is now weightier than ever.

Chelsea did at least make a recovery from the winding dished out by Villa at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. The Blues’ 2-1 win at Molineux today was a battle, a scrap that was missed by Didier Drogba and, more significantly, Daniel Sturridge.

We did at least get early warning of the striker’s potential absence and Chelsea have today confirmed that their leading scorer and Fantasy asset missed the midlands trip with a contusion to his hip – brusing in other words. His 16% ownership will be hoping that the timely break for FA Cup duty will be enough to see Sturridge make a return. Andre Villas-Boas has even indicated he could make the cup tie with Portsmouth. Regardless of his expected recovery time, with January wildcards fluttering, we’re already seeing an alarming decline in confidence.

Patience will be paper thin leading up to gameweek 21. With FPL managers handed the opportunity to refresh their squads, the dead wood will be shed. The trick of course, is to correctly identify those surplus to requirements – a Chelsea striker who has delivered well above his modest price tag and who is playing for a Euro 2012 spot, may not fall into this category. In ruthless times however, Sturridge has already become a casualty. Already he’s seen more sales in the gameweek than any other player.

Looking closer at the current FPL transfer trends – the likes of David Silva, Nani, Sergio Aguero, Ryan Taylor and even Jose Enrique are ranked at the very top of the transfers out right now. These players have been giants this season – consistent scorers who have served their Fantasy owners well. Let’s get this clear – these are transfers after the gameweek 20 deadline, they are not victims of the scramble for double gameweek assets but players cast aside, presumably as part of a wildcard shopping sprees inspired by another disappointing return.

The last few days have seen the Premier League elite humbled – clearly this has dented the confidence of some Fantasy managers. The thing about the Premier League’s best, however, is that once toppled, they do tend to get up again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The order of my subs is showing up differently on the totalfpl feed than it is on my official team sheet. The last time this happened, my third sub on the team sheet (which also showed up as my first sub on totalfpl) was the one used.

    Anyone else have this experience?

Have Sturridge now, but thinking of selling him for the YAK. Planning on getting Ba back in after he’s back.

    Therefore,
Will Yakubu(FUL,everton,NEW,arsenal,QPR) will outscore sturridge(SUN,nor, swan, MANU,everton) over the next 3-5 games?

    Thanks!

Was watching the Joey Barton incident footage, very poor decision by the officials that probably cost QPR the match. Barton's reputation got him sent off I reckon, karma for his carry on with Gervinho too.

Don't like keepers- Vorm (bad fixtures), Ruddy (sh*t defence)
Defence is OK, I'd get Richards or Kompany for their good fixtures.
Midfield is quality although I'd hold back on Gerrard for now until he is proven
I can't fault the strikers although I prefer Helguson over Yakubu.

Thinking Jevans - but not until he's back. Unsure really. Not nailed on either. Not WC yet - keeping an eye on FISO tho. Hopefully the rookies won't be too trigger happy!

Just tinkering with my team, not going to wildcard yet.

    Thoughts on:
    Sorensen, Stockdale
Richards, Enrique, Senderos, Rangel, A Ferdinand
    Bale, Nani, Dempsey, Walters, Moses
    RVP, Aguero, Helguson

I'll ask you both the same question: why not Silva? Has scored similarly to Aguero, presumably cheaper, and doesn't take up a valuable striker spot.

Frankly, my subs bench is a disgrace. It reads taylor 6 pts, enrique and wee dyer 8 pts.

I am going to get diddly out of that 'cause Drenthe is going to come back next Wednesday from his spot of dyke building and get 1 point...

The injustice of Fantasy Football is there for all to see...

How can itbe bad management? Any 'good' manager in the world would play drenthe ahead of those three subs. Feel for the guy, although it happens to all of us to have top unlikely performers on the bench (last three, i had moses 13, simpson 8 and moses 8)

I'm almost exactly the same (and it's all my own fault of course), got Caulker, Enrique and Dyer in that order.

Verm and Stur have given me the first two but now hoping Drenthe's no-show continues for another two games to give me Dyers 9+bps (very faint hope).

Phew worked out well so far as three of my sacrificial lambs have failed to come back and bite me (Walters, Shawcross, RVP (c)). Just need Rooney to have a quiet one Wed night and Spurs to absolutely go mental to justify my four point hit lol

    Would u rather have 5 x £9m+ mids or 3 x £10m att?

    Like a:
    Gerard, VDV, Bale, Silva, Nani
    Or
    RVP, Rooney, Aguero

Defence would prob look like Shotton, Caulker, De Laet, Kelly, McAuley.

Neither IMO, go for RVP, Aguero, Sturridge in attack and downgrade one of your mids to Moses then upgrade defence.

Another reason to wildcard this week is FA cup, that will no doubt throw up some injuries and you will have missed out on the price rises if you suddenly are in bad shape folllowing these fixtures. I personally am selling Sturridge for Yak in the hope that Yak goes up twice and Sturridge down but ultimately Sturridge is the best way into Chelseas team

Isn't the FA cup round when most big teams are resting their players? Apart from City/United but it's not much of a reason to wc now

I've got a plan for the next four gameweeks that doesn't involve any points hits and sets up my team well so don't see the point in waiting to use the wildcard and losing out on any value. Tried to take less hits this year which has been fairly successful but know pounds at the end of season can be very useful

According to FPL's transfers section, 10,000 gamers have already sold Sturridge for GW 21. I think that could be a mistake as he will be their main striker after Drogba jets off to the African Nations...

With respect, Torres is hardly a striker of note for Chelsea, especially with his abysmal scoring record. AVB will surely stick with a fully fit Sturridge over a misfiring Torres.
