Continuing our series of Watchlist Wildcard articles, it’s time to turn our attentions to the engine room, to discuss the midfield targets who we feel have the potential to deliver on your investment over the next couple of months.

With Gareth Bale remaining a hugely popular target, in many cases there are just four spots up for grabs in our Fantasy squads. While United’s stuttering form and a demanding fixture list casts doubt over the wisdom of putting faith in the likes of Nani and Antonio Valencia, there is an abundance of targets across the price brackets that appear to have the form and fixtures to enjoy a step up to fill in the gaps around Tottenham’s Welsh flyer.

Clint Dempsey
We’ve earmarked Fulham’s raiding American as our top wildcard target amongst the midfielders. Fulham’s form, whilst inconsistent for much of this season, has shown signs of recovery of late – most notably in the 2-1 victory over Arsenal. Martin Jol appears to have settled on an attacking lineup, with Moussa Dembele and Bryan Ruiz providing plenty of creativity from midfield and wide areas. That will surely benefit Dempsey who, consistently presents the biggest goal threat within the Cottagers squad. With fixtures firmly in his favour over the next ten gameweeks, his 8.5 FPL price tag looks like money well spent.

David Silva
You might consider Silva as an obvious pick given that he’s currently the top-scoring midfielder in the FPL rankings. Even so, we’re seeing Silva’s name amongst the top ten transferred out statistics – indication perhaps that some have grown impatient with fairly modest returns that have seen just one double-figure score in 11 Gameweeks. Silva has suffered his first price drop of the season this week – indication again that some folk are choosing to shed the Spaniard. Looking forward, however, City’s fortunes look strong, with a fixture list that hands them just one serious test (Tottenham at home) in the next seven Gameweeks. The loss of Yaya Toure to the African Cup of Nations will come as a blow but will perhaps give Silva more responsibility to get forward and start fetching goals again, having scored just once in nine matches.

Stephane Sessegnon
His goal and assist return at Wigan this week will have brought him to the attention of many, not least several Premier League managers if the paper talk is to be believed. In Fantasy terms, Sessegnon has always had the potential to deliver. His performance statistics hinted at more goals and assists, but only once Martin O’Neill had instilled new belief has the Benin international begun to deliver. In truth, Sunderland’s fixtures are far from sparkling. They face some stern opponents over the next two months that will test the revitalising powers of O’Neill to the full. Sessegnon looks set to remain a key figure in the Black Cat’s ascendancy and, at 6.4 in the FPL, we’re seeing plenty of interest already – only Yakubu has seen more transfers in this week. With Swansea and Norwich next at the Stadium of Light, profit in the short-term, at least, looks likely.

Jon Walters
Another player who will need to fight against some tough fixtures, Walters is a mid-price “out of position” prospect who has consistently delivered at the Britannia. Deployed up alongside Peter Crouch, Walters has scored all five league goals in home matches, with just two assists to his name on his travels. This is a home banker if ever there was one. While the Potters face some testing away trips, home clashes with West Brom, Sunderland, Swansea and Norwich in the next seven Gameweeks would indicate that Walters has plenty of potential to go on offering profits from both open play and the penalty spot.

Yohan Cabaye
A superbly flighted free-kick against United brought Cabaye back to our attention as a midfield prospect in the mid-price bracket. In truth, the former Lille man has disappointed in terms of raw output. Just two goals and four assists is a modest return for a player who has featured in all but one of Newcastle’s matches and who has been a consistent performer throughout. Cabaye has perhaps been somewhat shackled by Alan Pardew, leaving it to Demba Ba to provide the goals as the Magpies climbed to heady heights. With the Senegal striker now departed for the African Cup of Nations, Cabaye may well be called upon to support the attack that little more. Hatem Ben Arfa looks set to come in to replace Ba – perhaps offering more fluidity between midfield and attack. The alternative view is that, with Cheik Tiote also absent, Cabaye could find himself anchored to a deep, defensive role in the engine room. If that transpires, his acquisition may be a gamble but, with QPR, Villa, Wolves and Sunderland next in line for visits to Tyneside, Newcastle could well remain prosperous, even without the talents of Tiote and Ba; their absence may just see Cabaye come to the fore.

Stiliyan Petrov
Much like Cabaye, the Villa skipper has earned the reputation as an all-round midfielder whose main duties involve protecting the back four. That’s changed rather markedly under the stewardship of Alex McLeish and, this season, we’ve seen the Bulgarian recapture some of the goalscoring form which made him so productive for Celtic in the Scottish top flight. The return of four goals is his best since he moved south of the border and, with Villa enjoying a kind passage over the next ten gameweeks, Petrov looks odds-on to boost his tally further. While Stephen Ireland and Charles N’Zogbia also offer options the Villa midfield, there could be a Fantasy renaissance in the offing; Petrov has been their most consistent force and looks the most likely to go on delivering into 2012.

Victor Moses
Having failed to live up to his pre-season billing, the knives were out for the Wigan winger by October. Shoots of progress in December, which saw Moses notch two goals and even earn bonus recognition, have reignited interest in a midfield prospect who can be acquired for just 4.8 in the FPL. At that price, it’s hard to find an asset who can rival his potential. We can talk all day about his performance statistics, his attempts on goal and blocked shots, the facts are however, that Moses, along with Hugo Rodallega, will hold the key to Wigan’s survival and, given his price, he remains a decent Fantasy prospect. In the same price bracket there is also the intriguing possibility of James McClean. The Sunderland winger has came to the fore of late under Martin O’Neill- he has started the Black Cats’ last two games and picked up bonus on each occasion, in addition to bagging a goal. One to consider for those Fantasy managers looking for a way into the Sunderland midfield and, at just 4.5, almost 2.0 cheaper than Stephan Sessegnon. It’s perhaps not a certainty he will remain in the first XI when O’Neill has a full squad to choose from but at that price, can be easily benched.

Joey Barton
The red card received against Norwich will take Barton out of action for the next two Gameweeks but Fantasy managers would be wise to keep the Rangers skipper on the radar. Barton will sit out the trip to former club Newcastle, in addition to the potentially profitable Loftus Road meeting with Wigan, but the kind run of fixtures continue to flow after that. Indeed, Neil Warnock’s side look to have the smoothest ride of any team up until Gameweek 30 and we’d expect to see a rise in profits from the Rangers squad, particularly if Warnock continues to add quality. Barton will surely be restored to the lineup once his ban is served and he will continue to offer the best value within a Rangers midfield – unless we suddenly see both Shaun Wright-Phillips or Adel Taarabt spark into life.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

True. I think outsiders seem to think Lee Clark is some kind if genius what with the unbeaten record and everything but within the club a lot of fans have issues with him. A better manager would have got us promoted by now, no question. Basically this season is his last chance.

The advantage we have this season is that we've played both sheffs, charlton and MK away already so we have them all to come at home so 2012 could be fun.

The selection of players is this article and the other Watchlist Wildcard articles are based around realistic budget. Power to anyone who can afford Nani, Bale, Silva and Dempsey but realistically, we thought it better to push Silva and Dempsey and mid-price/budget options as we just feel that Nani, given United's form and fixtures, will struggle to keep pace with Silva over the next 7-8 GW's.

You will notice however, that if you view the Watchlist rankings still have Nani well placed - he is, of course, a top top pick. But, as mentioned, the selections in these articles are aimed specifically at those constructing a defence, midfield or attack using the WC and therefore we didn't think it useful to supply info on Nani, Bale, Silva, Mata, Lampard - pointless - everybody knows their quality and nobody would really be able to construct a midfield from all those players.

Instead, we've stuck our neck out and named a selection of prospects that are affordable as a group and that we feel should enjoy profit in the next month or so.

Rooney is the big call here - looked awful last time out and he often goes on a run of bad form, but he could also bounce back knowing him. I would be looking at Aguero but you could always switch I guess

Yohan Cabaye – The Man, The Myth, The Legend

Lets face it, the man is a bloody hero. That peach of a freekick against the Mancs caused many a willysneeze, and the combination of him and Tiote completely ran the show. However how good is he from a fantasy football perspective?

The main factor with Cabaye is his midfield partner. The energy and tenacity of Tiote allows Cabaye to be more of an attacking threat, however with his imminent departure for the ACON it may have an impact on Cabaye’s FPL returns.

Handily enough we have a good comparison. Tiote was absent from GW10-15 (inclusive). Cabaye scored 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 5 during those six gameweeks. From watching Newcastle throughout this season it was obvious that when Cabaye partnered Guthrie or Gosling he had to curb his attacking instincts and work as a deep lying playmaker, and thus he had less potential for FPL points. The stats support this picture, during GW10-15 he had an ICT score of 41.05 and had 3 attempts on goal, whereas for the last six gameweeks he had an ICT score of 48.97 and had 8 attempts on goal.

Do bear in mind that with both Tiote and Ba absent then logically it follows that Newcastle are going to have a harder time both defending and scoring goals, which again makes life difficult for Cabaye. However there are positives – his brilliantly taken freekick may mean he is given more opportunities from set pieces, especially as Santon has been impressive and could well take Ryan Taylor’s place. Short term though expect Raylor to continue as a right midfielder until the inconsistent Obertan fixes his gammy toe.

IF he plays yes, I've had him for a few weeks and I've been surprised that he hasnt featured more. When he has been on the pitch he's looked dangerous, I think he isn't training well or has pissed off Pardew. I wouldnt pick him for the moment, things dont seem right there.

thanks for the mini-article ATB. Hopefully FPL will be big enough one day where there are writers dedicated to covering one club, certainly you'd be a fine choice for Newcastle. Then there would be 20 jobs up for grabs!!!! With relegation battles!!!!! Anyway, wanted to WC in cabaye and was glad to catch this. Losing your partner in the build up and the closer, massive massive blow to the attack i would think. he will be heavily involved in the goals they score, but just not as many goals.

Your going to have headaches on who to bench from your front 7 every week. But to be honest I like that strategy as there always seems to be someone who gets dropped/rotated.picks up a knock. So you'll always have someone quality to step into their place. Also you can bench Walters everytime he's away from home and not be to worried about missing out on points

Oh and you could lose Simpson instead of Krul and gamble on Kelly from Fulham or get Caulker and make up the 0.3 that way

Agreed. As a Pool fan, he is absolutely crucial for us in Suarez absence, as someone needs to step up and be our 'spark'. He is also the sort of player Carroll need to play with. They'll both get lots of gametime and returns over the next few GWs IMO.

Question is, who do you drop? Nani seems obvious, but we all know what happens when you do that. He pops up with an explosive brace + bonus!

    I'm considering a w/c team as follows:
    Krul Mignolet
    Naylor Simpson Senderos Kompany Shawcross
    Silva Nani Dempsey Moses Bale
    Aguero RVP Yak

However this leaves me just 0.1 in the bank, and I would be looking to upgrade Yak back to Ba eventually (or maybe to Studge, as I have no Chelsea coverage). Should I get Shotton instead of Shawcross, and Caulker instead of Naylor? Would leave me 1.3 to cover such a move - hopefully that might be enough.

How nailed on are Shotton and Caulker? That's my worry.

    Thoughts?

That's similar to the team I've just wildcarded in - and I hav some of the same defensive concerns.

      Sorenson - Mignolet
      Caulker - Shotton - Kompany - Senderos - Simpson
      Silva - Valencia - Bale - Dempsey - Walters
      RVP - Aguero - Sturridge

Sturridge to Ba when he returns.

Both nice and relatively disappointing to find 90% of my team has been recommended by the Scouts.

Defensewise - Kompany to always play, and then pick the next best two for that week - if Caulker or Shotton or Senderos don't play, then one of the others will.

I see Bale in virtually every WC and Adebayor in hardly any. Granted Bale is on better form but I don't think there is as huge of a difference between them as people seem to think.
Ade is .1 dearer at the moment - but this of course depends on when you bought each player I was an early arrival on Ade and a late arrival with Bale so Bale is worth more if I were to cash in on him.
Ade has 10 points less - okay a negative but not a huge one.
Points per game - Bale is 6.3 and Ade is 6.1 - virtually identical.

Overall Bale is probably the better pick but I don't think its as clear cut as people make out. If Ade had scored vs. West Brom and Bale hadn't then those stats could be completely reversed. A player doesn't become rubbish and not worth consideration based on a couple of 2s.

I'm just getting rid of Adebayor instead of bale because I need to upgrade my forwards a bit. Those forward positions are more important since there's only 3 of them so it's tempting to get rid of ade who's out of form to fill the important forward spot with a more in form striker with better fixtures. Less so important to get bale out because there are plenty of midfield spots to fill.

For the defence will probably play J.Evans most games and then newc rotate well with sunderland and stoke with villa for the other 2 defensive spots.
