We complete our recent series of Watchlist articles focusing on potential Wildcard signings by turning our attention to the strikers. A position dominated by the relentless profits returned by Robin Van Persie, most Fantasy managers will be looking to fill just a couple of slots in their Fantasy Premier League squad…

While Van Persie’s returns have shown signs of wavering slightly and, with Thierry Henry increasing Arsene Wenger’s options, there will be a school of thought that will point towards shedding the Gunners skipper. However, Wayne Rooney’s form has never remained consistent enough to force a shift, similarly, City’s Sergio Aguero is yet to match the Dutchman’s output. It remains to be seen then, just how many will look to carry out a full refresh of their forward lines during the Wildcard window.

The value presented by Daniel Sturridge will also be a likely factor during January. Absent again for Chelsea’s FA Cup tie today – we have seen sales of Sturridge over the past week, although there will surely be plenty holding firm given his goals return and modest 7.4 price tag.

Those with both Van Persie and Sturridge installed, may look to change just a single slot in their forward line then. Looking at the candidates available, there are options across the various price brackets that appear warrant attention.

Sergio Aguero
You may have noticed from our articles on defenders and midfielders, we’re heavily backing City over the next ten gameweeks. The logic is pretty simple, City have the kindest run of opponents amongst the title contenders over the next two months and, without Champions League distractions, we feel that Robert Mancini’s side will make significant progress from Gameweeks 21-27. Aguero has been a consistent scorer, without delivering the kind of explosive returns we saw in his first month in England. The brace in Gameweek 17’s win over Stoke was his first two-goal fetch since Gameweek 5, but we feel that we could see progress in January and February. Currently commanding stronger FPL investment than Robin Van Persie, there appears to be a groundswell of support for the Argentinian. The prospects of a strong 2012 look good.

Yakubu
Already established as a top target having commanded more “transfers in” than any other player in the current Gameweek, the Blackburn striker has the form and fixtures to flourish further in 2012. Cemented in the Rovers lineup, on spot-kicks and with 12 goals to his name already, the current price tag of 6.0 remains strong value. Rovers have Fulham, Newcastle, QPR, Villa and Sunderland to come in their next five home matches and with a record that shows at least one Rovers goal in every away game, the Nigerian remains a healthy prospect if he can maintain his fitness.

Peter Odemwingie
West Brom have been faltering of late – a run of three matches without a goal and with playmaker Chris Brunt sidelined for eight to ten weeks, the omens don’t look good. Odemwingie will be undoubtedly be their key player if Roy Hodgson’s side are to recover and establish a mid-table foothold. At 7.2 in the FPL, his price tag remains fairly modest and with Brunt out of the picture, you’d back the Nigerian to take control of spot-kicks and even direct free-kicks, for the coming months. Norwich, Swansea and Sunderland are next to the Hawthorns, whilst Hodgson’s side have scored more goals on their travels than at home of late.

Gabby Agbonlahor
After a superb start to the campaign, Agbonlahor has suffered a barren spell of eight games without a goal, as Villa have struggled for attacking threat under Alex McLeish. Having dropped from 7.3 to 6.9 in recent Gameweeks, the Villa flyer offers stronger value at a time when fixtures are set to fall kindly. Home games with Everton, QPR, Fulham and Bolton in the next eight Gameweeks offers obvious potential, visits to Wolves, Blackburn and Wigan also appear to present opportunity to boost the “goals for” column. Should he remain at Villa Park, Darren Bent could yet come out of an indifferent season with a respectable tally but, with a difference of 2.7 in price, Agbonlahor’s Fantasy talents look more tempting for those willing to take a punt on Villa’s improved attacking output.

Bobby Zamora
With five strong home fixtures in the next ten Gameweeks, Martin Jol’s side have the opportunity to push up the table and begin scoring goals with a greater regularity. We’re pushing Clint Dempsey as the number one attacking target in their squad but, if you’ve filled your midfield slots, Zamora could provide a decent short-term punt over the next two months. His season has been far from routine, with plenty of speculation surrounding his relationship with Jol. There’s little doubt however that, when Zamora plays, Fulham are a more effective attacking unit. The recent last gasp winner against Arsenal will have boosted his confidence and, if Zamora can maintain a run in the side and Fulham can capatilise on their obliging fixtures, we’d expect him to enjoy a profitable second-half of the season.

Peter Crouch
With four goals and an assist in his last six league outings, Crouch has strong form as Stoke prepare to enter a run of four favourable home matches. Overall, the Stoke fixture list is daunting but it’s the Britannia fixtures with West Brom, Sunderland, Swansea and Norwich, that offer the potential. Priced at 6.8, Crouch would be a gamble and there’s little doubt that Jon Walters is a far stronger option, given that he’d fill a midfield slot for a similar price. For those set on their midfield selection however, Crouch is the clear alternative for those looking to back Stoke over those home games.

Heidar Helguson
The Icelandic striker has been accountable for more than half of QPR’s league goals thus far, presenting strong value in Fantasy terms with a 5.2 price tag. Neil Warnock’s side are about to embark on a very kind run of opponents which should bolster their goal tally and allow Helguson the opportunity to impress further. There is one potential caveat, with Frederico Macheda arriving on load, and perhaps further January window signings on the way, there could be some doubt at to whether Helguson will be given consistent starts in the months ahead. Warnock has already rested the striker on several occasions this season, clearly feeling that the 32-year old is unable to be flogged match-to-match. With further options arriving, there’s a real danger that this could continue.

Shola Ameobi
Newcastle’s loose cannon of a striker is a long-shot but, at just 5.0, he’s a very tempting alternative to the charms of Norwich City’s Steve Morison or Swansea’s Danny Graham in the same bracket. The key here is that, with Demba Ba absent at the African Cup of Nations until mid February, Ameobi has far more chance of starting in Alan Pardew’s side, he’s also likely to be on spot-kicks when on the field. With four home matches in the next seven, bringing QPR, Villa, Wolves and Sunderland to the Sports Direct Arena, the potential for profit looks decent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Bringing up the question again can one sacrifice nani for valencia.
Is Stephen Kelly nailed on at this stage
    Will Cahill ever transfer ha

    Team (A)
    Sorensen, Mignolet
Richards, Enrique, Cahill, Assou Eccoto, Shotton
    Silva, Nani, Bale, Sessegnon, Moses
    Van Persie, Aguero, Yakubu

    or
    Team (B)
    Sorensen, Mignolet
    Richards, Enrique, Cahill, Shotton, Kelly
    Silva, Valencia, Bale, Dempsey, Sessegnon,
    Van Persie, Aguero, Yakubu

Ive put a lot of thought into both and cant make a final decision.

      Nani, BAE & Moses
      OR
      Valencia, Kelly & Dempsey

I'd go with the latter, but Kelly is a long way from nailed-on. I like the Dempsey/Valencia combo, but you'd be best to downgrade one of your front 8 to a bench-warming cheapie and maybe upgrade or keep spare cash.

Santon has the most quality of all 3. I would drop williamson. At least with santon you have a chance for BP and assists. He used to play for Inter. Simpson sucks at crossing and williamson is in danger of being replaced by any person that Newcastle purchase at CB.

Like it but (like me) you'll have a prob deciding who to drop from your front 8.

One option you have is to downgrade either Sess or Walters (Moses? McClean?) and upgrade Yak to Studge. That will at least give you some Chelsea coverage and solve your 'who to drop' problem

walters rotates well with yak. out of the front 8 id be benching either walters, yak or sess.
Sturridge im not sold on. I'd rather play yak then him tbh. if i were to go mcclean/moses i would upgrade defense but i think the cheap def could pay off and it could be a downside bringing sess or walters out. Appreciate your advice gaff.

Ok just to ad more fuel to the fire wrt the Nani vs Valencia debate.

Here are the player rating comments from City vs United FA cup.

    Antonio Valencia - 8.5

One of United's best on the afternoon, and looking truly comfortable playing in midfield, Valencia carved open the City defence with regularity in the first half, heading straight for the touchline before whipping in excellent deliveries.

It was his pinpoint cross in the 10th minute that led to Rooney nodding United into the lead.

The Portuguese was fairly dangerous in the 60 minutes he was on the field, regularly looking to run at the City defence, although his touch was sloppy on several oocasions.

Was involved in the game's major talking point when a challenge on him by Kompany saw City's Belgian skipper get sent off, even though - for once - even Nani didn't seem to think it had been a foul, let alone a red card.

    Hence will keep Valencia.

    Alreet lads

I posted this last night, but most of you were probably tucked up in bed then so probably missed it. I think it might be pretty useful in helping to decide on keeper/ defensive rotations , so I've taken the liberty of posting it again.

My customized ticker, allocates values to the different colour gradings. eg v mcy = 1, v WIG = 18.

Here were the total values for the following rotations, in rank order:

    1) Ful/ Stk = 236
    2) Ful/ New = 226
    3) Ful/ Swa = 223
    4) Swa/ Mun = 220
    5) Stk/ Swa = 204
    6) New/ Sun = 202
    7) Swa/ New = 183
    8) Swa/ Sun = 183

Conclusion. The best rotation from GW22 - 38 is Ful/ Stk. The above are the only rotations that I tested, so I have might have missed some. Let me know if you have any other rotations that you would like me to test.

Let me know if this is useful

Ha. You noticed that? You might be right. The amount of time I have spent on fantasy football this season certainly doesn't show in my current rank! Still going to keep trying though, and things like getting a good rotation should give me a solid base from which to pick good players from. Thought some people on here might find it useful too. Any constructive criticism as to why my rank isn't so good? I realised last week that I have been playing fantasy football for more than 20 years (since the original game in 90 minutes magazine), and my best finish in this game is still only 40,000+ (last season). I can't seem to push on. Would appreciate your thoughts!

The name of the game is to have fun. If crunching some stats and checking different systems by which to play gives you Fantasy Footy joy, I'd say screw the obsession with rank. Much of it is overrated IMO.

Ha. That's an interesting take on it. I have to admit that I do like crunching some stats. Having a 10 hour round trip train journey to our factory every fortnight helps me find the time! However, at the end of the day, I only do the stats, to try and improve my game, and with it my rank. Not that bothered about my overall rank, but it would be nice to win our money league. Especially as the guy at the top seems to be a casual!

          Hello China mag,

I don't post on here much anymore due to the amount of idiots like that guy above but thanks a million for your excellent information.

when i saw that guys message to you i thought you deserved some thanks so here is dome outside observation on why your ranking might not be the best.

in short you are not picking the best players and as such not the best capt either. i'm not being smart here but you have taken a lot of puts with differentials etc. this game is all about the numbers so pick the best players regardless of who else owns them would be my advice.

also one last tip would be don't always let fixtures rule the heart if a top player is in form fixtures can be neglected imo just as if a top player is out of form e.g. Torres then don't pick them regardless of fixtures.

anyway apologies for the long post but thanks for the info

Thanks a lot for the support. You could be right about the differentials. But I don't take differentials just for the sake of it. Its more to TRY to be ahead of the curve. Case in point. I scouted Torres in the first game of the season against stoke, knowing that Chelsea had WBA and Norwich at home in the next two games. He showed enough to trick me into thinking he was back on form. So I brought him in, and captained him for the west brom game. To make matters worse, I stuck to my guns and captained him again for the Norwich game! What I should have done, is noticed the red hot form that Man Utd and Rooney were in, and brought him in against an Arsenal defence in disarray! More recently, I brought in Barfa for the Chelsea game, and watched him be benched since then, rather than wait until he had established himself in the team!

I saw a good quote on here, that i should follow more in the future. "Better to be one game late, than 10 games early"! I guess i should put my stevie gerrard punt on the back burner for a while then!

Lol defo put gerro on the backburner. these moves kill teams as for every one that comes off far more don't.

                worth watching Gerrard tho alright.

Exactly! Unless it's a punt, which we all need. I try and have no more than 1 or 2 in any GW.

The odd gamble is ok i made the Torres mistake too and had anotherdreadful holler with tevez also but the likes of the barfa move will kill you in this game. there is no need to be ahead of the curve just make sure you are on the curve.

ps stoke Fulham are my favoured combo for rest of season too. i just need to see if they are worth it value wise.

good luck with the rest of your season.

Ha. Tevez at home V wigan when the other strikers all had international commitments or something like that? I had some of that (for my wife's team). Captained him too. I still think that was worth a punt. Especially as for me it was always just going to be for 1-2 weeks. Could have been beautiful. I seem to remember that he missed a penalty early one!!

I'm probably sticking with Vorm too. Hoping to rotate him with Fulham, but my last WC draft only gave me enough for Mignolet! Based on my rotation analysis, that's not a great shout, but i would probably play Vorm most games anyway.

"My wife's team", which she likes to experiment with is going all out. Shcwarzer (stockdale, Sorenson, Hangerland, Kelly, Huth, Shotton. Plus one big hitter who could play every game. probably big Verm. Sound good! Nothing like putting all of your eggs in two baskets! All or nothing i reckon!

If you are in china, you might appreciate this piece of information. Have you heard about ITV? The on demand chinese tv through the internet? It basically comes free with an updated internet connection (so about 30rmb a month more than your normal connection). It has ALL the premier league games!! Up to 6 at one time to choose from. Plus recordings of the main games. Its awesome. Chinese commentary though. We've had ITV at home for ages, but I only recently found out about the footy. I think my wife was keeping it quiet on purpose!!

As I say above: the game's about having a little fun. Nobody (hopefully) stands to lose a house payment, so 'F' it ... what good is Fantasy success if it comes with uncomfortable stress? Besides, even the best analyses get shot to hell once the whistle blows and the ball's kicked.

    Selection Dilemma..
So I'm leading my mini-league by about 30 points. Of the available choices 2nd place has Mata and Silva, so it may be wise to avoid a differential. I've got one attacker and one defending spot left to fill, can afford just about anyone.

I've shortlisted my options down to..

Midfield: Mata, Silva, Gerrard, Van der Vaart
    Striker: Rooney, Torres

Reminder, I can only get ONE of each here. Torres is guaranteed to start in Drogba's absence and picked up two assists last night so I am tempted..

Go with the best probability choices: Rooney & Silva.

You're ahead - minimize your risks/punts. Torres has flattered to deceive before and Rooney has Bolton before the schedule gets more difficult. You can always slide over to Nando if he seems to profit from Drogs being gone.

      Sorenson - Krul
      Richards - Clark
      Cahill - Shotton
      Kelly - Senderos

your team value must be 108ish? i like the looks of your team, with the obvious issue of non-rotating GK ... could you bring in Stockdale for Sorenson and then upgrade Kelly or Evans to a Stoke defender?

Kompa is undoubted fantasy gold but I've just had him at the wrong times - the barren CS run at the start, red card and penalty to lose an 86 minute CS v Wolves, ditched him after that but city defence improved... I do think as today shows he is more card prone as he's the last line of defence.

Counts as a gamble to go without Aguero given his fixtures. Santon is not nailed on - might not get 60 mins from him. Williamson and Simpson definitely are.

Easiest way to get it is to go to transfers page and data tab then transfer out your whole team (obviously don't press confirm)

Go to transfers and 'click' everyone out. It'll say top right what your selling value is.

Speaking of the Sturridge vs Yakubu debate for the 3rd striker spot:

Sturridge: SUN. nor. swa. MUN. eve. BOL. wba. STK.
Yakubu: FUL. eve. NEW. ars. QPR. mcy. AVL. wol.

Fixture-wise, dont you think Sturridge edges it? Hes got easier away games (As is obvious) ans barring MUN, his home games trump Yakubu's dont you think?

I agree, Yakubu is the player in form ATM.

    What say?

Sturridge by a mile. But where is he? Apparently he was due to return yesterday but no sign of him...

Even though Chelsea arent great this year, Studge still plays in a vastly better team than Yak which has to be taken into consideration as well.

I'll be sticking with Studge for better or worse. It's been a slow few weeks but the Studge train will be back on track starting from Sunderland at home 🙂

That's just the kind of positive, optimistic post I was looking for. Sturridge and Mr.Clean for me!

I agree. But the money makes me choose Yak. He's unpredictable, though-which could go both ways.
