Ledley King suffers a hamstring tear and is expected to be sidelined for several weeks. Alejandro Faurlin confirms he is ruled out for the rest of the season, Alan Pardew mulls over a switch to the flank for Hatem Ben Arfa and West Brom’s injury woes rack up:

Ledley King is looking at an extended time on the sidelines after tearing a hamstring. Reports suggest the centre-half could be out for up to eight weeks after suffering the injury in training last Friday and with William Gallas tearing a calf muscle against West Brom last week, Harry Redknapp’s options at the heart of defence are limited. Luckily for Redknapp, Michael Dawson returned to action in the weekend FA Cup win over Cheltenham and is available for selection, in addition to Younes Kaboul and Sebastian Bassong.

Arsene Wenger has dismissed the idea that Thierry Henry could stay on loan at Arsenal until the end of the season. Reports have suggested the New York Red Bulls man could perhaps remain at the Emirates till May, in a deal similar to the one that saw AC Milan retain the services of David Beckham a couple of years back, but it is not a scenario that Wenger has considered:

We have promised that we will send the player back so we have not spoken about that at all. Let’s hope we have the problem. If we have a problem then it means he has done well so I hope we have the problem. But at the moment I can just say no, it is not envisaged at all.

Alejandro Faurlin has confirmed he is ruled out for the rest of the season. The midfielder was stretchered off in QPR’s 1-1 FA Cup draw with MK Dons at the weekend and took to twitter to reveal he has a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

Alan Pardew has suggested he is tempted to play Hatem Ben Arfa on the wing after the Frenchman’s wonder goal at the weekend. Ben Arfa was initially fielded up front alongside Leon Best for the game against Blackburn but his impact on the game only flourished when he was moved to the flank after Gabriel Obertan was withdrawn. Although the player is desperate for a “number 10” type of role, Pardew feels Ben Arfa’s performance benefitted from the shift:

It did help him. Before I arrived, there were suggestions that he had played wide and didn’t want to play there. But Hatem has to understand that it’s about the team, and where we think he fits in best is where we are going to put him. But his talent was there for everybody to see today.

West Brom’s injury woes increased at the weekend after Gareth McAuley picked up a calf strain in the FA Cup win over Cardiff. The centre-half limped off before the end of the 4-2 win and with Jonas Olsson also currently sidelined with a calf problem, Roy Hodgson now has nine players on the treatment table ahead of next weekend’s clash with Norwich.

Seamus Coleman suffered a recurrence of a thigh injury in Everton’s win over Tamworth at the weekend. The Irishman has played only 30 minutes since gameweek 15 and was subbed off before the hour mark at Goodison on Saturday when the problem flared up yet again.

Steve Kean hopes to have Chris Samba, David Dunn and Junior Hoilett available for Blackburn’s home clash with Fulham on Saturday. The trio missed Rovers’ 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Newcastle last weekend, with Samba a last-minute call-off, due to ankle and hamstring issues. With Martin Olsson and Gael Givet also returning, Kean’s injury problems appear to be lessening as he looks to plunder a crucial three points against the Cottagers.

FPL have added the newest January acquisitions to the player list today. Thierry Henry comes in at 7.5, Gylfi Sigurdsson has been priced at 5.0 in the Swansea midfield, while Paul Scholes has returned to the Man United squad with a 5.5 price tag against his name.

Man City confirmed this afternoon they have lodged an appeal over Vincent Kompany’s sending off in yesterday’s FA Cup defeat by Man United. The Telegraph’s Mark Ogden has suggested the verdict should be known by 6pm tomorrow evening, with the case being fast-tracked due to City’s Carling Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool taking place on Wednesday.

BAE and Evans are both cheaper options at Spurs and Utd respectively. Evans won't play every week, but he will get plenty of games no doubt and will play more often than he doesn't I think.

site is acting up, but i wanted to make a point here, as i've seen some slagging off valencia to the tune of "he's more expensive than players scoring more points".

now, i'm no statistician (and the EXTREMELY rudimentary calculations below will prove as much!), but it doesn't take a brainiac to divide the total number of minutes by points scored and come up with a minutes/point rate for a player. here're some ranking lists for the top 10 overall points scorers for y'all, plus Valencia to make the point.

    first, overall points:

    1. Silva
    2. Nani
    3. Bale
    4. VDV
    5. Walters
    6. Dempsey
    7. Sess
    8. Lamps
    9. Yaya
    10. Mata

second, minutes/point so far this season:

    1. VDV: 12.7
    2. Silva: 13.1
    3. Nani: 13.5
    4. Bale: 14.2
    5. Lampard: 14.5
    6. Valencia: 15.5
    7. Mata: 16.0
    8. Sess: 18.8
    9. Dempsey: 19.3
    10. Walters: 19.4
    11. Yaya: 19.9

third, minutes/point/pound (the number itself isn't significant....it's the relationship with the other numbers that counts). obviously this is on current market price...this figure will be different if you've held the player, but the below numbers will be relevant for anyone looking at any of these players for a WC team.

    1. Sess: 2.979
    2. Walters: 2.896
    3. Yaya: 2.618
    4. Dempsey: 2.271
    5. Valencia: 1.938
    6. Mata: 1.649
    7. Bale: 1.527
    8. Lamps: 1.306
    9. VDV: 1.296
    10. Nani: 1.286
    11. Silva: 1.259

obviously there are a lot of players who, if you use the stat-toggle on the FPL transfers page, will come up as better "value" than most of these players, but that's a function of price compared to output. the reason sess, walters and yaya top the 3rd list is because their cost is lower.

but the general point here is that valencia is AHEAD of mata, sess, demps, walters and yaya in minutes/point and mata, bale, lamps, VDV, nani and silva in value to date, for those looking to freshen up the squad during the WC. obviously fixtures play a role, but any argument AGAINST valencia on performance or cost is pretty shaky.

I hope you applied for the writers job. I believe in Valencia and he's in my wildcard team. His days at full back will be at an end with players coming back in and as long as Ashley Young is sidelined Valencia is in as far as I'm concerned. Can see him consistently racking up points.

        i did indeed!

just hoping they don't hold my residence in the far east against me!

regarding big tony v: though i haven't brought him in yet, he's defo in my WC squad. the big question is whether nani joins him....it's a marathon not a sprint, and nani looks like giving RVP and silva a race for highest scorer in this year's FPL....

Not basing this on any stats but from memory Nani is a player who tends to do well in spurts. What I mean by that is he hits a run of form that lasts 3, 5, 10 games, whatever.

Right now he's off form. Getting him in hoping he's just about to hit form is risky as he's more than capable of trotting out a run of two and three point scores. Way more sensible to wait till he hits some form then bring him in. If you follow the logic.

Check out Sigurdsson's career stats. And obviously the defence and goalkeepers are going to be poor if I've included Silva, RVP, Rooney and Aguero.

Actually, my defence would still include Liverpool, Fulham, Newcastle and Swansea cover: all teams who have racked up a few clean sheets.

Check out Sigurdsson's career stats.............and then check out the teams and what level of football they were at.

Your team isn't bad IMO, but downgrading one striker to say Sturridge, Yakubu, Adebayor or Ba (when he's back) would give you a bit more cash to improve a couple of the other players to the next level and benefit the overall strength of the squad.

        Sigurdsson is a potential gem.

Bal4tom, I'd choose between Rooney and Aguero (I'd go for Aguero, better fixtures) and use the cash to upgrade on Cabaye and your defence.

An improvement on Ruddy should also be a priority, he's pointless.

    Richards/Vermaelen/Jose Enrique/Simpson/SKelly

    Silva/NDyer/Bale/Valencia/Dempsey

    Aguero/Yakubu/Van Persie

generally like it, though my well-documented preference for glen johnson over enrique leads me to suggest you rethinking that one after a close look at player stats for the season so far.

i had verm until his injury, and he did well by me, but i think that might be an area where you squeeze out some cash to upgrade dyer.

the rest of the team looks golden.

Cheers. Dyer is usually my non-playing sub TBH, and for the price he does well. (on my bench with 10 this week). Enrique is likely to be the candidate to leave when I want to get Ba back. Either for Caulker or Shotton i.e. cheap def.

I like Verm, but arsenal are missing too many others to fully realise his value. I'd downgrade and save 1 mil, enabling you to get back Ba in a single transfer. Possibly HBA instead of dyer (that's a punt, there) - sigurrdsson is another.

Not sold on Skelly, p'raps better value cheapie?

Now's the time to make those extra ££ count...

It's Verm's attacking threat that gets him points, so a lack of C/S for a week or two may not hurt too much. My other option is Verm to BAE and Yak to Sturridge.

Yes, but he's compromised at LB. I'd love to have him in, but not until Sanga/Santos or at least Jenkinson returns.

Don't TOTT for the next 6 weeks - baaad fixtures say I.

personally I'd go as cheap as needs be to upgrade Dyer (High price defs are not having a good time this WC) this will cover fixture problems for Yak, Dempsey and Valencia - for longer term, Verm WILL be fantastic....

So other players have to help him bomb forward? What? Football is more than just stats of 2 assists, his general all round play is superior to Franks, thus why hes favoured over him and you generally play better when Lampard doesnt play.

Well am a big admirer of Ramires and i am not suggesting to replace him with Frank ... all am saying is that someone from behind will have to play decisive passes to the forward runs of Cole/Ramires/Torress/Mata/Sturr and these is no better than Frank in doing that

certainly is controversial, but would be the kind of bet that would make you a fair few quid if it came through.

sturridge and ruiz both play on the wing, but dempsey plays behind the striker (or as a striker) whereas mata's a left-sided middie.

i'd say that tips the scales in S/D's favor. not to say you won't be right, keith, just feel the bookie's money will be on S/D.

spaces in the front 3 are precious...the most precious of the squad, in fact.

the way i see it, is it nailed on that rooney outscores nani/valencia/hernandez in the upcoming fixtures?

then ask yourself what the odds of, say, aguero being the leading scorer for city over their run.

if you're like me, the result of answering those two questions is drafting in aguero and leaving rooney to the rest.

He should outscore them BUT(!) he is playing behind the front 2 strikers when playing 3 forwards, and holds back and comes in from deep with 2 up.

Like he did against Man City - did you see he came from well outside the penalty area to score the first goal...

Sorry - ROONEY is a disaster pick in the making... SAF is messing his season up.... and also Berbatov (while I am at it!)

I would rather get some attacking City cover instead of doubling up defensively. Can see them run riot at Wigan. Think doubling up on United is a bit too much with their upcoming fixtures in mind, maybe upgrade Valencia to Silva and downgrade Hart to someone like Mignolet or Sorensen? Im not sold on Cabaye either, would rather get Sess or Walters, though it would probably require further downgrades?

I'm just a couple of nudges of encouragement away from playing my wildcard earlier than I'd planned to.

    My team:
    Krul - Good
    Vorm - Good
    Heitinga - So-so
    Vermaelen - Injured
    Wilkinson - Doubtful, rotation risk
De Laet - Doubtful, rotation risk
    Warnock - So-so
    Bale - Good
    VDV - So-so
    Nani - So-so/Good
    M Petrov - Poor
    Osman - Injured
Sturridge - Possible doubt, rotation risk depending on signings.
    RVP - good
    Adebayor - So-so

    So Wildcard or not?

    I have 1FT.

        have to agree.

you'd be lucky to get keeper's points +1 per GW with that defensive lot.

        and osman/petrov....hoo boy!

        hit it!

Anybody thinking gerrard and ameobi are cheeky punts over the next few weeks?

gerrard has just come back from injury i know but i think he will start and with favourable fixtures ahead he could become a force. especially as hes the freekick/penalty/corner taker!

also with ameobi as demba ba is out, he could find a place in the team! i think pardew favours him over best and again easy fixtures ahead!

Who do people consider to be the best Osman replacement for GW21? With Kompany out (unless rescinded) Studge, Simpson and Jones also doubts I am looking at a 4pt hit for Osman this GW in preference to playing my WC. Obvious options are:

Sess > away to Chelski (not the best fixture)
Walters > Away to Liverpool (see above)
HBA > Good home fixture but high risk
Cabaye > Tiote factor a negative

    Any other suggestions appreciated

Sessegnon - Chelsea away is no longer a terrible fixture, and the next two games after the visit at the Bridge should bring you the goods!

Have you thought about Stephen Ireland?

He's going to be inconsistent but over the short to medium term he should produce probably over 3-4pts a game imho

No thanks. I'm a Villa fan and I'm keeping well clear of our players for now (altough Clarke is on my radar for the wc). Ireland needs to show some consistency before I go anywehere near him. To high risk and definatly not worth a 4 pt hit imo. Thanks for the advice though, appreciated.

Well, I like it. However, you are one light in midfield, and could do a bit to your defence.

      Dempsey to Etherington?
      Moses to Cabaye?

        I know...
I want dempsey because I'm loving his fixtures, and he is FPL proven material (at least last seasons)... as for moses, is there to replace Dyer, he will have a nice run of fixtures and i think he might score some... do you think I should keep Dyer? not feeling newcaste love right now...

Look at their fixtures. I am retaining Krul, and will have Cabaye myself:

          Krul, Lindegaard
          Assou-Ekotto, Koscielny, Senderos/McAuley(Caulker)/Shotton
          Bale, Etherington(Ramires), Dempsey, McClean/Cabaye
