There was plenty logic behind the move to draft in Yakubu this week. Having been rested for the FA Cup defeat at Newcastle, the Nigerian looked primed to play a significant part in the gameweek as Blackburn went looking for a win that would take them off the bottom of the table.

The first week of the winter wildcard bore fruit to that idea. Yakubu rose by 0.3, up to 6.1 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) pricings, as over 220,000 Fantasy managers clambered to get a piece of the action ahead of the Fulham showdown.

It seemed a sensible acquisition. Yakubu had been instrumental in Rovers’ 3 wins so far this season, grabbing braces against Arsenal and Man United, in addition to a 4 goal haul at home to Swansea. If Steve Kean’s side were to grab all three points, you’d have thought he would surely play a part.

A red card within twenty-two minutes quickly put an end to those best-laid plans. Dismissed for a reckless, studs-up challenge on Danny Murphy, Yakubu ended the gameweek on the princely score of -2 and is now set for an enforced leave of absence. He begins a three-match that puts him out of the picture until the gameweek 25 home clash with QPR and leaves Kean facing (eve, NEW, ars) with a strike force that have scored 6 goals between them all season.

With Demba Ba off on international duties and Emmanuel Adebayor unavailable for Spurs’ game against his parent club Man City, Fantasy forward lines look set for a significant shake-up over the upcoming couple of gameweeks. The irony here is that Yakubu was the main beneficiary from Ba’s trip to the African Cup of Nations- with Nigeria having failed to qualify, he offered an in-form cut-price option as a replacement for the Newcastle man.

This afternoon’s moment of folly, though, means the chance afforded was no more than a fleeting one, as schedules are once again scanned and budgets readjusted to accommodate further alternatives.

With Yakubu suspended for 3 games I'm thinking it might be time to begin a bandwagon for the player that became the enduring image of the old FPL site after the end of last season. Yes, I am talking about Steven Fletcher.

Currently at 5.9m and with 2.3% ownership, his last 4 scores have been 8,8,4 and 6 (pre baps) against Arsenal away, Bolton away, Chelsea at home and Spurs away. Next 4 games are AVL, LIV, qpr, WBA which takes us nicely up to around the time that Ba should be back. He has scored 9 goals in 1192 minutes this season. To put it another way, that’s a goal every 132 minutes. The only issue I can see is that his injury record isn't great, hence why he's only played 1192 minutes but from GW13 he has started all but one game.

Finally, he is certain to go up at least .1 in price this week and a double rise would not be a surprise. With Yakubu set to join Ba in getting massive transfers out many managers will be bringing in similarly priced strikers. With the exception of Morison, no other forward in the price range has the recent form to match Fletcher’s.

To summarise: form, fixtures, cheap, differential and profit to be made.

Excellent point. I was looking at Helguson of QPR as an alternative. New manager and nice fixtures could spur him on. Although, I guess Fletcher is more nailed on for 90 minute runs.

If you were to pick one defender and one midfielder that you believe will score the most points next gameweek, who would it be? I’m thinking of doing Nani and Jones out for another midfielder and defender, and then WC in two weeks.

Dempsey/Gerrard/Larsson/Lampard and Fulham/Stoke/Liverpool/Chelseadefender/Baines are the options I’ve been considering. What are peoples views? The chosen midfielder will be in my starting line-up both of the upcoming two weeks. The defender will most likely only feature in the first.

I have two free transfers, team is linked, will WC before GW 24.

At the moment, I'm feeling more or less set on Dempsey. But which defender do people think will score the most points?

So, got a feeling there may be no useful double risers this week (not that i care that much)

Sessegnon will but want to keep him anyway, Bellamy could, Im sure Scholes will too, so hes probably the only .1 to be made

Cant wait to get rid of Nani though, so im sure he will do well in the next fixtures

Decent-ish week for a change. No doubt they will strip Rooney of all points such is the cruel and fickle nature of FPL.
By the way, Rooney becomes my second or third captain to miss a penalty for me this season. Granville may moan about never getting penalty saves but I am regularly on the other side of that particular horror show.
Anyway 41 points so far, not looking great for bonus but judging from my minileague rivals it's been an ok day. Oh and Danny Murphy getting me 5 points was nice. 🙂

How are they right? Its not like the people who didnt WC have done any better. Everyone did poorly. I doubt WC teams in GW23 will be much different to the people who wild carded this week plus theyll pick up the price rises as a result, theyll benefit from having the better players (in terms of fixtures) and they have the added bonus of 2 transfers to tweak a side theyll keep for the season rather than 2 very short term transfers.

    Hi all

Would I be right in saying you can use the wildcard to build up a bit of value in your team (if the opportunity presents itself). Ie if I were to use my wc today, I could put Sess in, leave him there until Saturday, and if he rises twice I'd have an extra £0.1m for my team (if I took him out for someone else)?

Ah but to gain £0.1m he would have to rise by £0.2m. Remember you only ever get half of the rise when you sell.

anyone looking at Welbeck for United coverage?

I know people say he;s a rotation risk but Fergie clearly rates him (and rightly so) and does seem to prefer him

Also today witnessed a defensive masterclass from one J. Evans, I kid you not.

With only 3 slots up front and a lot of potential options to fill them, I would want someone guaranteed more game time than Welbeck, even though I agree he is a good player.

re Evans - shame about ManU's fixtures over the next few weeks. I transferred him in for this game week only and will be getting rid as part of my wild card.

      Yep.

Was hanging on for GW23 but was always marginal with Ade not playing next week and needing to raise funds for Aguero.

The Yak's discretion and Nani doing another Drenthe-esque performance tipped the scales for me
