There was plenty logic behind the move to draft in Yakubu this week. Having been rested for the FA Cup defeat at Newcastle, the Nigerian looked primed to play a significant part in the gameweek as Blackburn went looking for a win that would take them off the bottom of the table.

The first week of the winter wildcard bore fruit to that idea. Yakubu rose by 0.3, up to 6.1 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) pricings, as over 220,000 Fantasy managers clambered to get a piece of the action ahead of the Fulham showdown.

It seemed a sensible acquisition. Yakubu had been instrumental in Rovers’ 3 wins so far this season, grabbing braces against Arsenal and Man United, in addition to a 4 goal haul at home to Swansea. If Steve Kean’s side were to grab all three points, you’d have thought he would surely play a part.

A red card within twenty-two minutes quickly put an end to those best-laid plans. Dismissed for a reckless, studs-up challenge on Danny Murphy, Yakubu ended the gameweek on the princely score of -2 and is now set for an enforced leave of absence. He begins a three-match that puts him out of the picture until the gameweek 25 home clash with QPR and leaves Kean facing (eve, NEW, ars) with a strike force that have scored 6 goals between them all season.

With Demba Ba off on international duties and Emmanuel Adebayor unavailable for Spurs’ game against his parent club Man City, Fantasy forward lines look set for a significant shake-up over the upcoming couple of gameweeks. The irony here is that Yakubu was the main beneficiary from Ba’s trip to the African Cup of Nations- with Nigeria having failed to qualify, he offered an in-form cut-price option as a replacement for the Newcastle man.

This afternoon’s moment of folly, though, means the chance afforded was no more than a fleeting one, as schedules are once again scanned and budgets readjusted to accommodate further alternatives.

Some people say gw24.. but this is a bit misleading. Better to think of it in terms of dates.

'The January Wildcard can only be used after Gameweek 20 starts (2 Jan 11:30) until Gameweek 23 ends (4 Feb 11:30)'

This means you can activate it and make unlimited transfers, only up until Feb 4th 11.30am, in time for gw24. You cannot activate it during gw24 i.e. after this time.

When people say gw24.. they mean in time for your new transfers to play gw24.

      Make sense?

About to wildcard and I've a couple of questions if anyone has an opinion:

    a) Skrtel and Richards seem about to rise tonight, any thoughts as to whether they may go up twice this week
    b) Was planning Valencia to Dempsey but after today thinking I might stick with Valencia - yay or nay

    cheers

      a) get both for the long term IMO. Both their respective defences look tight. Pool have 3 dodgy fixtures between 24-28 but ride them out.
      b) I like both, similar to the Walters/Sess debate. If I was to get one, it would be Dempsey even if that means no Utd cover.

Alerady have Enrique but wondered whether to bring Skrtel in in case he rises twice.

I like both, maybe I'll try and wangle them in and drop the Rooney idea for Aguero

I have the same problem, this could be offset by Raylor's price rise, but Jones is also falling, so would need Schwarzer to fall, or else lose Verm for Kos.

Do you really want to keep Ade in your WC team?

Is Gerrard worth the outlay? Bit worried about Sturridge - why wasn't he brought on today when it was still 1-0? I suppose Essien on for Lampard was just to tighten it up, but it was a chancey move from AVB.

Shotton's gametime is hit and miss too. I'm heading for a cheapie third striker - Fletcher is top of that list at present.

That's the best front-line at the current moment in time for a WC.

Do you really want Fat Frank in there? Valencia over Nani seems the right move at present.

Not sure about Shotton. I'd be looking at Huth. I'm still of the opinion that a v. cheap 5th midfielder is the way to go and go 3-4-3 most weeks. You can''t do that with your midfield.

After watching Rooney's assists again, i honestly think both will be removed.
1st one def comes off Welbeck, No question imo.
The 2nd one while not as clear actually comes off two Bolton players before falling to Welbeck w/o Rooney touching it.
