Nathan Dyer plays a pivotal part as Swansea come from behind to see off Arsenal. Gylfi Sigurdsson impresses on his debut, setting up Danny Graham to down the Gunners. Leon Best grabs the winner for Newcastle, while Tim Krul excels in goal to give Mark Hughes a QPR debut to forget.

Ryan Taylor
He certainly seems to have lost his position at left-back to Davide Santon but Taylor continued on the right flank for Newcastle yesterday in the 1-0 win over QPR. The second most popular defender in Fantasy Premier League, with 34% ownership, Taylor’s out of position role looks set to see him pick up more Fantasy suitors after his assist and clean sheet contribution against Mark Hughes’ side helped him to 3 bonus points. Newcastle face three away fixtures in the next four (ful, bla, AVL, tot) and while their clean sheet potential may drop, Taylor’s more attacking role, in addition to set-piece duties, could see him flourish further over the next few gameweeks.

Leon Best
While Hatem Ben Arfa once again started from the bench, Best was handed his fourth start in six games by Alan Pardew, lining up alongside Shola Ameobi. With Demba Ba unavailable due to international commitments, Best vindicated his manager’s faith by netting the game’s only goal, his first since gameweek 5 away to Aston Villa. He seems set to feature in the first XI while Ba is absent and, at 4.6, is a handy cut-price option, though the Magpies’ above-mentioned schedule may deter Fantasy managers from acquiring his services.

Hatem Ben Arfa
As mentioned, the Frenchman was named amongst the subs in spite of his FA Cup wonder goal last weekend. Clearly, many had expected him to start- an influx of over 11,000 transfers in prior to yesterday’s clash was the most he has attracted in any gameweek this season. An early first-half ankle injury to Yohan Cabaye afforded him a place in midfield but it’s becoming apparent Ben Arfa is far from a certain starter under Pardew, even in Demba Ba’s absence. Cabaye will undergo a scan in the next couple of days and with Cheik Tiote also away at the African Cup of Nations, Newcastle’s midfield will be severely diminished if he’s ruled out for any period of time.

Tim Krul
Mark Hughes will no doubt be cursing the Dutchman after a defiant display in the Newcastle goal prevented QPR from finding the net at the Sports Direct Arena. Krul helped his side to a fourth clean sheet in six matches but while his Fantasy owners will be delighted with the 6 saves that saw him return an 8 point haul, it’s noticeable that he has only made more saves in one of the previous 20 gameweeks- an indication of how less secure Newcastle are without Tiote and Cabaye in the centre of the park.

Robin Van Persie
The FPL top scoring player opened his 2012 goal account with the opener in yesterday’s 3-2 defeat at the Liberty Stadium. Having been rested for last Monday’s FA Cup win over Leeds, Van Persie took only five minutes to get back to goalscoring ways with a smartly taken effort against compatriot Michel Vorm. While many opted for Nani and Gareth Bale as captaincy options, Van Persie seemed a solid pick- he’d returned double figures four times on the road- but failed to add to his tally and faces a tough test at home to Man United next weekend.

Scott Sinclair
The winger’s spot-kick duties once again helped boost his Fantasy tally against Arsenal. All 6 of Sinclair’s goals have come in front of his own fans- he has returned 67 of his 89 points at the Liberty Stadium, an average of 6.1 per home game in comparison to 2 on the road. In spite of his woeful away form though, Sinclair, at 6.3, has now crept ahead of Juan Mata in the overall standings and is second only to Michel Vorm for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Nathan Dyer
A goal and assist from the winger continued his recent upturn in attacking output. Dyer, who also picked up the maximum bonus, has now netted in three back-to-back matches for the Welsh club- he scored in the gameweek 20 win away to Villa and also grabbed a goal in last weekend’s FA Cup win at Barnsley. Brendan Rodgers’ side seem to have picked up their attacking threat in recent weeks- that’s 5 goals in their last two league games from GW 20-21, compared to 6 goals in the nine games (GW 11-19) prior to that. They have only two home games (CHE, NOR) in the next six, but are clearly firing on all cylinders as the season starts to unfold and, at 4.7, Dyer certainly looks a more than decent cut-price proposition right now.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
The on-loan Icelandic international wasted little time in announcing himself to the Swansea faithful. On as a sub at half-time, Sigurdsson provided an assist for Danny Graham’s winner just over twenty minutes later and looked at home in Brendan Rodgers’ outfit. Having already played under Rodgers at Reading, he is clearly a player the manager has great faith in – he was immediately in charge of Swansea’s set-pieces and his delivery looking menacing throughout. At just 5.0, he looks set to become a pivotal part of the Swans midfield and looks an enticing Fantasy prospect already.

Danny Graham
The former Watford man is another who is stepping up in performance for Swansea of late. Graham’s winner against the Gunners took his recent returns to 2 goals and an assist in his last three league starts- factor in his FA Cup brace last weekend and it’s clear Graham is on something of a roll just now. With Swansea’s afore-mentioned increased goal threat and a price of only 4.7, Graham will no doubt have appeared on many Fantasy radars with the winter wildcard in full effect. He’s now grabbed 7 goals, all from open play- with 5 of those at the Liberty Stadium and a couple on the road, he’s able to vary his returns a little better than the likes of Sinclair.

MOST importantly Opta have given him one only. This is FACT

Same happened with RVP's one earlier in the season
Opta gave it to Gervinho, and thats where it ended up

first one is like ade assist a while back where he couldn't control it and it bounced of his foot through to defoe i think, wasn't right that he got it as he wasnt in control, so think same should apply for welbeck touch

      As a Rooney(c) owner:

I couldn't really tell whether Welbeck touched the first one...it seemed to bobble a tiny bit, so I was all ready to lose that one. The second seems to come off Wheater, whether it nips Rooney on the way back in I don't know but I was resigned to losing that one as well.

The fact both of these have stayed (for the time being), shows once again how stupid this system is. An assist should be the person who provided the assist, not whomever got a slight deflection off the ball last.

Yeah agree the first should be rooney's regardless, but if you watch second one again, rooney's stumbling and wheater clearly knocks it on into wellbeck's path. If Opta have only given one assist as well, I'd be suprised if it wasn't this one that they've dropped. Guess all rooney owners and (c) will have to sweat it until GW has ended. As someone who (C) RVP earlier in season when his was removed, I know how it feels!

your argument doesn't make sense. you say the system is stupid for the assists staying with rooney, but then say the assists shouldnt go to someone else (welbeck) for a slight deflection.
I think rooney should keep the first assist and that is coming from a welbeck owner.

Not really, a lot of people have doubled and i suspect trebled up on defences in their Wildcard teams, i contemplated trebling up on Newcastle but was advised it may be unwise due to Tiote being out and i agree maybe its not wise long term. Also, I don't have my overall WC left, so less games to plan for.

If Torres fails again this week - and Lord I am prepared for it - I will start to believe has been hexed.

In-ter-rest-ting - Sunderland are attacking so well atm and Swansea seem to be going all out to score, not defend. That said their away defending has been much improved and they've grabbed several surprise CS.

Will mull over this but the Arsenal attack hasn't looked the same since Gervinho left. Ironically, I know.

Would love some more opinions on this slightly different WC strategy:

Looking at getting the big 3 up front:

    Vorm Sorensen
    Enrique Evans Cahill Simpson Kelly
    Silva Bale Sess Moses Dyer
    RVP Rooney Aguero

Means playing Sess every week and rotating Dyer and Moses (which I’m ok with, they rotate well). I think I’d rather rotate 2 cheapies in midfield than bench a Moses/Dyer/Surman every week.

I might look closer at the defence too as Cahill/Kelly can be any 9.5 combo.

    Thoughts?

That's showing a lot of faith in Sess, the next two look good but you'd need him to keep firing over some pretty tough games after that. Perhaps if you did McClean instead you could rotate him with Moses and upgrade Dyer to (without working out the cost) Walters or even someone left-field with solid fix like Barton.

Hmm, but that would mean playing 2 of McClean, Moses and Walters every week, so chances are most weeks I'd have at least one of those with a bad fixture.

How about getting Valencia instead of Sess and downgrading Cahill to a 4.2? Could play Enrique and Evans every week and rotate Simpson/Kelly/4.2. Then rotate McClean and Moses?

I would prefer to stick a few more eggs in good fixture baskets at this point, but if you're happy with the form of those guys then maybe you're right.

That could work, I'm actually not that sold on Tony V despite his excellent form, with the exception of Fulham away all of his points have come in very easy games, and there aren't many easy games on the horizon. I prefer the balance with Cahill at the back, but like you say Walters isn't great ever week, I would be comfortable playing Moses quite often after GW22 though.

So it basically comes down to:

            Walters/Moses/McClean or
            Sess/Moses/Dyer

playing 2 from 3 every week?

You could even go Barton/Moses/McClean, Barton's more risky than Sess obviously but he and Moses both have good fixtures pretty much every week until March

Yeah it means ditching Walters, but he's had 3 shots on target in the last 4 games and scored 2, so I think things could start to dry up for him, especially with Europa League as you say.

Yep I'm keeping an eye on Sorensen but will keep hold of him until they start conceeding again.

can anyone remember which game the gervinho/rvp assist was. Was it Stoke at home or WBA ? I think RVP got loads of points that day despite the assist being taken off. That assist was then discussed in the podcast and how late it was removed. By looking at the date and the last game that week we can discern when we can expect to 'know' about Rooney. got nothing better to do.

after a lot of campaigning it appears FPL have factored in their 09/10 best hair formula into bps. carroll and coloccini picking up the mantle from where chris eagles left off.

a second and serious point, this whole rooney owner v non-owner thing is depressing, how does owning or not owning rooney have any impact on what happened? we all have the same replays of the same incident. then a knowledge of the rules and an awareness of precedents this season then formulates a view on it.

Because it's a grey issue and as such cognitive biases take over and people are unable to be fully objective (are we ever?) and people come down very hard on whatever side they support.

The first one in particular I can see a) that the ball moves straight after it passes Welbeck b) Welbeck is pulling his foot away from the ball at that time so both interpretations are possible.

People are daft if they come down vehemently on one side - it's just not that clear.

which is why only clear assists should be given. I.e. corner, cross, headed goal = clear assist

not scuffs, bobbles, rebounds, breaks from tackes and last player to touch it!

Only creates a further problem - what is a clear assist? One mans clear assist is another mans fluff? How about clear but unintentional assists like Ade's off his ass vs. Newcastle? Or Torres spectacular but unintentional?

The whole point of the "last attacking player to touch (read entirely literally) ball" rule is to eliminate subjectivity completely. Which is the only way to get consistency.

          See:
          man, last
          tackle, bad
          play, not interfering with
          intent, clear

It clearly flicked off Welbeck's boot. I don't see what there is to discuss. There is no other explanation for why the ball's flight is altered mid-air.

Lads, I'm having a 'Mare! I've played my WC - kept Ade in for 1 more week cause I thought he'd go nuts on Wolves (ha!). Was gonna sub him out for Aguero, but now Yakubu is on a 3 match ban I'm more pressed to be rid of him before his value plummets, which means down to 2 strikers for next week, or I can bring Aguero in and keep the Yak a week, or take a hit and bring in???? Hmmm. 3rd time I've had Dyer on the bench with 10= points as well!
Who do we reckon I could get in as a reserve striker?

    Krul/Vorm

    Richards/BAE/Jose Enrique/Simpson/SKelly

    Silva/NDyer/Bale/Valencia/Dempsey

    Aguero(currently Adeba-whore) /Yakubu/Van Persie

£4.2M in bank, some of which needed for BAE -> Vermaelen later on.

dont see any point in keeping Ade unless you think he will return to scoring against wigan, but after that games get harder. you should look at stoke or sunderland coverage, potential point scoring matches there. Crouch wouldnt be a bad diff.

Ade has Wigan next week, so Yak is a bigger issue
Also Yak to Fletcher is simple, and will probably make you .1/2 in the process

Anyone else not feeling the wildcard buzz this time around? I think this is the first time in four seasons of playing FPL where I haven't been like a kid in a sweetshop, not knowing where to start with all the great transfer options... I think my Jan wildcard will be more of a small adjustment to rotation/bench players rather than wholesale change. Although Mata is on borrowed time, Dempsey & Stevie G are chomping at the bit wanting his place in midfield!

For the record my team is below:

    Vorm (Hennessey)
Enrique - Evans - Simpson (NTaylor - Wilkinson)
Mata - Nani - Bale - Silva (Moses)
    RVP - Ade - Studge

Yeah I timed my first one perfectly but not sure about this one. Probably gonna bust it out this week though with Yak, Ade out, Nani & Mata dissapointing. Not sure about the replacements though. See below for my team.

re: your team. not sure about wilko, i think shottons got more gametime and plays in midfield. mata and studge overkill but i couldnt pick between the two. good team tho. i'd tempted to just get wait and see studge gametime goes.

Cahill officially a Chelsea player. When are you guys thinking of putting him in? In a few weeks once you see how he settles in or if he will be starting games or now before a potential price rise?

Players hitting the post with a shot...

Do you see it as an 'off target shot' or do you see it as 'nearly a goal'?

You probably wouldn't say that if a player had an open goal and then went ahead to hit the post. 😀

I guess it's a case of glass half full vs half empty.

Oh fair enough it's a bona fide question, I thought it was a pop at the PPI system 😀

People always get shocked when people hit the post but in my view it's not unexpected at all, it's the result of a compromise between hitting the keeper and shooting wide. Slap bang in the middle. Plus most Prem strikers actually can shoot (except for Darren Bent and seemingly Suarez lol) so they can put the ball close to where they want.

I would say for that reason that hitting the post quite a lot is ironically a sign of a pretty good shot.

The goal as a whole constitutes the target to my mind, the woodwork is still hitting the goal if you like, but obviously doesnt count for anything. But its hard off target. Missing the goal altogether is off target.

Anyway regardless of what consitutes the target i dont think missing it should have a negative impact in any sense, thats ridiculous.

Agree that it shouldn't have a negative impact, but hitting the woodwork is undeniably off target. The definition is that it's on target if it's going in if the keeper isn't there.

Thing is that hitting the woodwork 3 times for example is possibly a lot closer to 3 good goals than 3 shots directly at the keeper (in which the player should have done better). But then this just serves to highlight even further why the system is weak.

I accept the definition of on and off target in absolute terms, but even if they dont get rid of -ppi for off target, hitting the woodwork should really be a 3rd category that neither adds or takes from ppi. (not that i see that happening!)

sorensen 2 bps, cech 3bps and krul 0 bps
doesn't really tell the full story. sorensen got 12 PPi and cech and krul both got 22 PPi. sorensen and cech where in the right match at the right time, krul wasn't. i don't think there's an obvious flaw in the system at all, sundeland fire in a load of crosses so cech will have had plenty of fodder to make up the extra 3 saves krul made

7 November the RVP was removed. The Arsenal game was on the saturday (5th Nov), they didnt remove it on the Sunday and waited until the Monday when the gameweek was finished. (there was no Monday night game). I think this is a strong indicator for a c10am tomorrow verdict on Rooney assist.
