[sbu_large_image] Suspensions

The race to be the first player to climb onto the second suspension tightrope of the season is slowly starting to near conclusion, with the traditional bad boys queuing up to make the transition into balancing mode.

Readers of these pages will have seen regular mention of Blackburn’s Jason Lowe and the Chelsea captain John Terry as the recent front runners, both with eight yellow cards to their names from previous indiscretions. Last week they were joined by perennial offender and Sunderland leader Lee Cattermole and, not to be outdone – Joey Barton celebrated his return to the QPR side after suspension with his eighth yellow card in the win over bottom of the table Wigan. All four of those familiar names therefore now sit two yellow cards away from a two-match ban.

Hot on their heels with seven yellow cards though (and perhaps feeling the pressure) are Wigan’s Gary Caldwell, who despite conceding the second QPR penalty today for a foul on Heidar Helguson escaped further sanction, and Wolves’ enforcer Karl Henry, who certainly didn’t escape punishment for the back-heel he aimed at the prone Marc Albrighton’s midriff. Henry’s straight red card will see him miss the next 3 games for Wolves (LIV, qpr, WBA), and coupled with the injury to his midfield colleague Emmanuel Frimpong (on loan from Arsenal), could leave the black country club short of both of their first choice pair – the imminent return of Jamie O’Hara can’t come soon enough for Wolves. Everton’s robust Belgian, Marouane Fellaini is the final player with seven bookings, while a host of players complete the Tightrope widget with 6 yellow cards.

GAMEWEEK 23 BANS

  • Yakubu(BLA) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 3 matches)
  • Luis Suàrez (LIV) – FA charge (last of 8 matches)
  • Karl Henry (WOL) – 1 Red for serious foul play (first of 3 matches)

Using it now. If you're going to do for this GW do it now because you get 10 whole days to trade players. More importantly, a whole bunch of players you can trade are going up in price tonight so grab them while you can.

Presumably you get rid of the fallers get in all the risers tonight and wait until Tuesday evening to get in the ones you really want - no limit to transfers in WC week?

I have only 5 playing at home this week but included Sess and Demps but could have 10 playing at home next week with only RVP as my one away so waiting for 24 to Wildcard.

Hope to make up some real ground in my mini-league

No limit to transfers... yep remove all fallers, bring in all risers you can, keep those you want and sell the rest. Remember, never buy back a player you've already sold for profit...

Right you bunch of numbskulls - each and every one ranked higher than me - I may well keep Adebayor to the end of the Season.

Suarez - or any Liverpool player will not disgrace my team this Season.

Torres - I will not be party to this madness!

    If you must, get Bent - I know I may ... 😉

Hey guys. Just interested on different opinions on this mindset, With 4 of the big teams playing each other this week its been pretty difficult to choose a captain. I have Bale, Silva, Aguero, RVP and Rooney. I decided I would be captaining one of these players (ruled out Dempsey which was a mistake). I opted to go with Rooney as a Gunners fan. My thinking being that if Rooney fails then Arsenal are more likely to win the game. With the other side of the coin being Arsenal lose but I (hopefully) get a good return from Rooney.
So has anyone else had/have this mindset when unsure on what to do?

With 5 captain possibilities I did what I always do and went RVP. Someone earlier said they made a mistake in not making Dempsey C and I was kicking myself as well but there were plenty of other logical choices as well as the captains poll showed.

You can either gamble in this game and occasionally hit the jackpot or play it safe and occasionally hit the jackpot!!!

    Off topic...

Baby number 3 is due in 2 weeks and we can't decide on a name. We don't know if it's a boy or a girl.

She won't let me go with Kenny...but has promised that it can be the second name if it's a boy.

    C'mon...hit me

So: on top of Terry facing *criminal* charges for the AFerdinand 'allegations', I now read that fans are being investigated by the *police* for chanting/saying naughty things while on the train back from Norwich (re: AF) ...

Now, maybe it's the pie-eyed American in me ... but that's the craziest, authoritarian sh!t I've ever heard of. It's so weird, as a Yank, to realize how different 'freedom of speech' is between the two countries -- when the general impression is that we're basically the same re: civil liberties.

Now, I know the US is no 'city on the hill' ... and I slagged Suarez right good for his naughtiness - but that was the *FA* punishing him - a private entity sanctioning its employees. So, in England (a country I truly admire *just* behind the US), you can be arrested by Mr. Man for saying racist comments?

Well, we may be f*cked over here ... but that's just so fascistly wacky.

And, yes, I know fascistly is not a word. Should be, though.

I simply believe that freedom of expression is the highest of all freedoms. Even if that expression is odious and abhorrent.

Suppressing unpopular speech doesn't eliminate it. And Mr. Man locking people in a box for saying naughty things -- where does it end?

We have a saying here: 'If we didn't have freedom of speech, how would we know who the a**holes are?'

And again: I find racist speech completely abhorrent, to be clear.

Can a rapper be arrested for use of the n-word in England?

Well, what we have here is plain and simple racism. It is not an offence against Suarez' Liberty to suggest that his freedom of speech be curtailed. Liberty - or any system that is based upon it, must be indivisible. Otherwise, what is freedom to the Pike will be death to the Minnow, as a wise British Philosopher once put it.

So, in order to protect the community from undesirable utterances, it is a reasonable curtailment of freedom to prohibit speech?

Society will punish speech on its own: your neighbors, your boss, customers, etc. But what purpose is served by squelching unpopular thought? And who decides?

Clearly, your laws haven't outlawed racism itself. I guess 'our' outlook is freedom is more valuable than politeness/correctness.

Not all speech. Some speech. In my opinion, there is precious little Liberty in the US. And it is not the community that needs protection, but the citizens within it.

Hey, Donkey ... read my post. I stipulated that the US was f*cked.

I'm more liberal, I'd warrant, than most of you here. I'm very well aware and disgusted by the failings of my country, especially post-9/11.

But if we're talking freedom of expression, we are miles, and miles, and miles beyond you, Europe, or anywhere else for that matter. Check libel, slander, expression re: racism, Nazism, etc., the ability of minorities to express themselves (Muslims, etc.), and on, and on.

It was a friendly question and I expressed my respect for England.

It's honestly not my attempt to stir the pot ... I really find criminal charges for expression of beliefs - not threats, not lies to defame/injure, etc. - totally foreign to punish.

I was just asking for some philosophical/political context so I could see how the English system views it.

Too much, I guess. And so the 'liberal' hordes drown out any dissenting voices ...

It's just two very different systems of thought. America had a founding document that guarantees individual freedoms, so it started off from quite a classically liberal - nowadays "rightwing" or "libertarian" - position. Britain, especially after the experience with the class system and poverty throughout the working classes, shifted towards the left after World War 2. By this I mean being willing to sacrifice individual freedoms for the benefit of society as a whole. While some of this has eroded over time, the legacy remains.

No probs. Arguments about freedom, liberty, inalienable rights etc can descend into pretty incomprehensible philosophizing in my opinion. As I see it, giving everyone a bunch of rights logically has to lead to contradictions. It's the responsibility of a good judicial system to decide which rights are most important in which context, and courts make regular rulings on this in this country and throughout the EU. For me there is no perfect theoretical solution that will please everybody, just the best compromise which causes the least hurt. In my view there are some ways to express yourself that should be forbidden, but the principle should be to allow as much as may be tolerated.

Ok I'm going to say it. Yes. I do think that if somebody says a racist comment or worse, chants a racist chant in public, then should be punished, with a fine or something similar.
You will say that that would infringe freedom of speech, but I am of the view that racism is one of the most abhorrent and lowest things, and must be stamped out

What you have, you see, is a clash between one Liberty - that of speech - with another - that of humanity.

In this case, we believe that the the Liberty to be a dignified human overrides the Liberty of unfettered speech ... very good.

ughr. i saw that this afternoon after fearing just where and what i'd posted.
long story short, not a "random uni chick" but a masters student i'd met once before a couple for months ago. she's classier than that. now the funny/tragic part is i fluked/charmed my way to hers by pretending to be french during a game of wine-pong and offering to draw her a picture on paint.
then realising she'd be about an hour getting ready and armed with nothing but her laptop i checked who the hell my fpl captain was (standard), waited some more then went back to join my team-mate in the french wine-pong team.
would like to apologise to merrymichael for abusing wine
