Amidst all the lunchtime controversy, it was, perhaps, easy to overlook Wayne Rooney’s display at Old Trafford. While the Suarez-Evra shows no sign of abating, Rooney’s brace lifted United back to the summit and brought him firmly back into Fantasy considerations, setting the tone for Emmanuel Adebayor’s performance this evening…

There’s no denying Rooney’s been wildly off-form. A couple of penalties at Stamford Bridge and “those” 2 assists against Bolton was all he had returned in the last seven gameweeks. Indeed, further analysis shows that, prior to last weekend, the United forward had scored in just three games since the end of Gameweek 5.

With winter wildcards affording us a chance to restructure, plenty Fantasy managers had turned their backs on Rooney. It was easy to see why. His indifferent form, in addition to a run of fixtures – (che, LIV, nor, tot) – had, aside from the trip Norwich, hardly looked appetising. With two strong home games for Man City and Newcastle just around the corner, Sergio Aguero and Demba Ba were drafted in by many, taking their places alongside man-for-all-seasons Robin Van Persie up front.

For as much as he can be a frustrating Fantasy pick, when Rooney hits a purple patch, his returns are rarely bettered. Back-to-back double points hauls make him hard to ignore right now but with Aguero hosting Blackburn and Bolton over Gameweeks 26 and 27, Ba welcoming Wolves and Sunderland, and Van Persie virtually undroppable, the United man may still struggle for our immediate attention.

Gameweek 28 looks the likely turning point. With United’s fixtures easing up, many will turn to Rooney as a replacement for Aguero. The champions face just one top eight team from there on in and the Argentine looks the obvious candidate for the chop; currently priced at 11.2 to Rooney’s 11.9, the move will require little budget-juggling, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side ready themselves for the final quarter of the campaign.

As this article was being written, Emmanuel Adebayor conveniently decided to barge his way into the equation, too. Similar to Rooney, his poor recent form – a goal and assist in the last ten gameweeks- has seen his Fantasy owners desert the Tottenham forward in their droves.

Close to 300,000 have sold Adebayor in the past four gameweeks but a goal and 4 assists in Spurs’ game with Newcastle have served a reminder of his own undoubted qualities. Tottenham face Arsenal and United next but then go head-to-head with just two of the top eight from Gameweek 28 onwards.

With 10 goals and 11 assists, Adebayor has now played a part in more Spurs goals than Gareth Bale, despite the Welshman’s superior overall consistency. He’s now climbed to fifth for forwards, with 130 points only 8 less than Demba Ba. Rooney is up to second top-scoring forward, now on 17 goals- only Van Persie has netted more. With their aforementioned strong schedules to come, there’s little doubt they’ll both plunder plenty more points before the season end.

In what has proved to be a hugely disappointing gameweek so far, those Fantasy managers who have one, or both, of the pair are likely to see a substantial boost up the rankings. Patience, and plenty of it, was all that seemed to be required.

    A)
Who to start: McClean or Sigurdsson?[=
I know fixtures point to McClean but despite his 2 point haul Siggy was involved in everything last night, very unlucky not to come away with more.

    B)
    Sorenson (Mignolet)
    BAE Senderos Santon (Caulker, Shotton)
    Sigurdsson/(McClean) Valencia Bale Dempsey
    RVP Aguero Dzeko

1FT - I'm looking at Dzeko OUT, Rooney IN

Have I got my team selection right? Rooney I feel is a good option with Norwich then his gameweek 28 onwards golden run.

Why not, Ryan? They're both in the top 3 for Form in mids. I really did think they both were a bargain under MON. It just makes for a difficult benching dilemma. But feels better to bench McClean rather than a Valencia.

Not sure Sunderland will be prolific enough in the games ahead. Doubling up on City attack is one thing but doubling up on Sunderland attack is another story. No doubt it could work and you could bench McClean and use him as a 5th mid. I guess I just prefer to spread the resources

    Dear Sir Alex Ferguson,
Your comment this this that "Suarez is a disgrace to Liverpool Football Club,"
has left me a little confused about your stance on disgraceful conduct, may I take you back to a certain incident on 25th January 1995 where one Eric Cantona launched a 'kung-fu' style kick into the fan in the crowd, for which he was banned for 8 months, yet you persuaded him to stay in Manchester.
Just something too remember before you shoot your mouth off next SIR.

Suarez is clearly a disgrace, a racist t**t, whereas Cantona attacked someone after he himself had been racially abused and attacked first by the fan who was throwing objects at him. If someone started slagging me off and throwing things at me I may well kung-fu kick him, however, I don't walk down the street shouting "ni***r at people and then refuse to apologise and shake their hand.

Fergie may well be playing mind games or he may be genuinely shocked that someone in his position ie Dalglish is sticking up for a player that hates people people because of their skin colour and then refuses to apologise. Hating someone is not wrong but hating someone because of their skin colour most definitely is.

Suarez had an opportunity to put his clubs previously good reputation above his own personal feelings/prejudices... if he'd just shaken hands instead of snubbing Evra it would have put this whole sorry saga to bed...

Must be remebered that Fergie/Utd banned Eric themselves for his actions. Also you have to remember that Cantona was reacting (wrongly) to being abused for being French by that moron in the crowd. So I'd say theres a big difference between these two respective situations.

I'd have preffered Fergie kept his mouth shut on the issue as a Man Utd fan (and wish Evra had reacted with more restraint at the end of the game too).

But whatever Utd said or did, theres no hiding that Suarez and LFC have handled this situation disgracefully and the cubs once good name will be tarnished in many neutrals eyes

I figure this is a good time to ask the deadzone.

    Valencia > Surman
    Dzeko > Rooney

The logic is that with Nani back Valencia may shift to RB. With Belotelli back Dzeko becomes a rotation risk. I have to sell Valencia in order to get Rooney because I don't want to sell Evans or Linde.
    Sound logic?

Pilkington, Johnson, Surman, Bennett, Fox, Crofts have all had a decent run in the first team and then gone missing for weeks.

It could be the way to go JOA. Perhaps it isn't such a bad idea to use 2 extra transfers and downgrade elsewhere in two weeks time.

If you can do it for 2 free's (a little hard to tell a few weeks from now though) then I would say it is worth it, but Rooney is a big game player, I'd fancy him against Spurs moreso than Norwich to be honest.

Rooney has a tendency to go on good runs and I have a feeling this is the start of hit. This is why I am so keen to get him now.

Yeah Aguero is the other option. For a two week punt I'm not sure its worth it. Plus with rises it means I won't be able to afford Rooney unless I downgrade elsewhere. Thats an extra 2 transfers. I also think Rooney will clean up against Norwich although and the Spurs game will be tough he has the potential to score then too.

I don't see why it would be an extra 2 transfers? It would be an extra one, and with WC just gone you shouldn't have many pressing transfers to be made.

Because I will be left with $0 with my current proposal. If I choose Aguero I won't have enough to do a straight swap for Rooney in 2 weeks. Get it

I honestly would be keen on Aguero if I could easilly switch to Rooney in two weeks. Except I can't because I won't be able to afford it. Its more that I don't have a choice in the matter rather than what my preference is

I'm an optimistic Utd fan but I'm not so sure we'll hammer Norwich. They're a tough side to beat. I can see a close game and hopefully we'll scrape a victory (much like the game at OT earlier in the season).

Aguero will tear B'burn and Bolton apart I'm afraid.

I'd leave Rooney until GW28 if I were you. I'm in a similar situation financially (got 0.1 to spare on a Aggers>Roon trannie) and I'm definitely holding Aguero for the next 2GWs

Can't see past Aguero for the armband either next week. Which is something you should consider.

I think he is perhaps the 'must have player' for the next two weeks

The armband in two gameweeks time is the clincher. I have no problem giving the armband to Rooney against Norwich. But Silva or Dempsey for the following week is a little sketchy to say the least. Again I will keep an eye on Aguero tonight and if he looks as if he's in good form I may well go for him

Okay I'll get my loyalties out the way first. I support Partick Thistle and am therefore well used to disappointment and failure. For this reason I feel authorised to express 'my' opinion regards the Evra/Suarez affair, thereby also reaching my own personal closure.

Having watched the various video evidence (without audio or commentary), it does seem Evra did alter his hand position prior to Suarez arrival. However he did it in such a subtle way as to give the affect that it was still there for the shaking. Whether Suarez intended to shake Evras had or not, we cannot tell, but the retracted position of Evras hand, might have influenced his final decision.

In the end it appears that Suarez snubbed Evra rather than the other way around. This might be the case. Evra going straight the camera in protest however, does possibly suggest something pre-meditated. This might not be the case.

In summary, I personally reckon Evra 'might' have actually ‘subtly managed’ to make Suaraz look like the perpetrator (intentionally or unintentionally) without portraying himself as a villain (which he might or might not be). Therefore Evra in a sense possibly played the event more cunningly (if that was his intention) and Suarez was massively caught out. Unless Suarez had no intention of shaking his hand in the first place, in which case, that's a different matter.

As I said, very disappointed by the failure of both players, and as punishment, they should both be now forced to play for Partick Thistle.

    C'mon the Jags!!

I just don't believe we can be categorical in our conclusions. I'm only suggesting this is what might have happened in 'shake-gate' but at the same time completely concurring with you that Suarez might have intentionally snubbed Evra.

I fully respect all opinions, but perhaps it's better to be less categorical, one way or other, without knowing the truth.

For your information I dislike Suarez far more than Evra. Not so much because of recent events (although they are very much to be disliked) but because of the way he conducts himself on the pitch. Suarez has an odious character and spends way too much time arguing, complaining, being aggressive and generally dislikeable. However sadly Evra has, I believe, in recent seasons started to show signs of drifting into similar traits.

If they both just played football, they would be great. Give me Paul Scholes or Scotty Parker any day - odd school football.

Think people are forgetting here that Suarez was found guilty of using rascist language toward Evra during a game. It's not the 60's/70's anymore. This cannot be tolerated in any way.

So for someone to then refuse to shake the hand of someone they racially abused is absolutely disgraceful.

I know it's easy for me to say but I genuinely believe if the boot were on the other foot and it was a Utd player and Fergie defending the indefensable I'd totally condemn their stance and I'd feel ashamed to be a Utd supporter.

Liverpool need to hire a better PR firm in the future. Only the most die hard Pool fans still back their actions

Gaffer, I couldn't agree more, however I am not a Liverpool fan, far from it and I do not condone racism (I reject any sort of 'hate' behaviour).

I am also in no way trying to justify anything that has happened in the past. I'm just suggesting that Suarez might have been 'owned' by a very clever Evra over this latest spat.

We cannot be 100% sure Suarez 'refused to shake [Evras] hand'. If he did he should suffer the strongest possibly penalty, whatever that might be. I personally would prefer to see football without Suarez as I believe his 'antics' now far outweigh his 'ability'
