Peter Odemwingie returns to form to see off Wolves in a one-sided midlands derby. West Brom’s strong away form continues, with James Morrison again impressing. Micah Richards is benched as Roberto Mancini opts for rotation, while City struggle for goals on the road once more, with Sergio Aguero and David Silva failing to produce away from the Etihad again:

Micah Richards
The right-back was a victim of rotation yesterday, as Pablo Zabaleta got the nod for City’s trip to Villa Park. Richards’ attacking prowess has seen him acquire 17% Fantasy owners but it appears that Roberto Mancini’s selection policy will continue to frustrate as City juggle domestic and Europa League duties. The Italian looks likely to alternate his full-backs, then, and, with Kolo Toure now heading back from the African Cup of Nations to challenge Joleon Lescott for a place in the heart of defence, Vincent Kompany is the only member of the City back-four seemingly safe from his manager’s tinkering.

Joleon Lescott
The centre-half grabbed the match-winner at Villa to take his recent tally to 2 goals in the last four gameweeks. Lescott’s eye for goal has seen him grab as many as 8 goals in a single season while at Everton and his attacking displays are proving crucial for the league leaders right now. Given that Sergio Aguero has scored 2 in his last eight, while Edin Dzeko has scored 2 in his last twelve, it’s fair to say that City are struggling for attacking returns. Factor in his clean sheet and Lescott has now overtaken Richards in the FPL standings, now sitting on 90 points, after picking up the maximum bonus.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva
The Argentine continues to frustrate his Fantasy owners on the road. While he managed plenty of efforts in the narrow 1-0 win over Villa, Aguero failed to score for the eighth away match in succession. Compare this to 6 goals in his last seven appearances at the Etihad and his inconsistency is glaringly obvious. For an 11.2 priced player, his inability to deliver away from home is infuriating, though with home clashes with Blackburn and Bolton up next, he looks a strong armband option over the next couple of gameweeks. Rumour abound that Mancini is willing to reconsider Carlos Tevez over the remainder of the season and, with Mario Balotelli now available after suspension, the league leaders have plenty of attacking options to consider over the last 13 gameweeks.

David Silva’s early-season form was strong both at home and on the road, but City’s lack of attacking away returns over the last couple of months have also affected their playmaker. Mancini’s side haven’t scored more than once on the road now since Gameweek 11; Silva has picked up just 2 assists in that subsequent seven-game run.

Peter Odemwingie
Finally, he’s beginning to deliver on the performances served up last season. Up until yesterday, the Nigerian had been a huge disappointment, with just 4 goals to his name in the first 24 gameweeks but bagged a hat-trick at Wolves to serve a reminder of his potential. A Fantasy sensation last time round, with 15 goals and 9 assists, Odemwingie has struggled for form and fitness this term and his displays have even been criticised by Roy Hodgson. West Brom have been resultantly toothless of late, with just 5 goals in the last seven gameweeks prior to yesterday’s win at Molineux but, with Sunderland, Chelsea and United up next, their immediate schedule looks tricky.

Baggies Away Form
It’s as if Roy Hodgson’s side just don’t like playing at the Hawthorns. The Baggies have stuttered and struggled, with 4 goals and a single point in their last six home games but, on the road, their form has been markedly different. West Brom have now won four and drawn two of their last seven away games, suggesting that, against conventional Fantasy thinking, their assets may be best utilised on the road. With trips to United, Everton, City and Liverpool in their next five away, that theory will be tested severely, though.

Liam Ridgewell and Keith Andrews
The new January acquisitions were handed their debuts for the Baggies yesterday. Ridgewell was fielded at left-back by Hodgson, with Nicky Shorey dropping out of the first-team, as Gareth McAuley kept his place at centre-half alongside Jonas Olsson. Andrews, on as a half-time sub for Paul Scharner, caught the eye with a devastating display. The former Blackburn man grabbed a goal and assist in the 5-1 rout and, with Hodgson opting for a five-man midfield, could force his way into his manager’s first-team plans over the next few gameweeks.

James Morrison
The Scot’s recent strong form continued at Wolves yesterday. A couple of assists means he has now produced attacking returns in three of his last four gameweeks- ironically, the only blank was in Gameweek 24, when he was selected for the Scout Picks. A goal and 4 assists since the start of Gameweek 22 is indicative of his form and, priced at 5.3, with a 0.6% ownership, has proven to be a decent mid-price differential over the last few matches.

Should have gone with my initial (C) choice, Silva. Darn Kun was tempting me with his penos duties. Only if, AJ could have been tripped over a yard closer, only if.

    Ohhhh hindisight's great.

In fairness, the only ones I disagree with are the SUN-ARS and FUL-STO ones.
Ramsey 3? Shawcross 3? Really? None for McClean (don't have him), Riise or Dempsey?
Also none for Graham? (don't have him either).

I'd like bonus for Valencia but understand why Rooney, Giggs and Scholes got them.
Annoyed that 1st sub Moses got 1 as well...

EA Sports PPI Index – Not satisfactory at all.

    http://www.premierleague.com/e.....s-ppi.html

I find the explanation offered by EA Sports completely unsatisfactory…

    Just to use one example:
Graham scored 2 and was award no bonus points – we challenge this point only for Granville to state that pens do not offer higher score in the index compared to open play goals…. how are we supposed to know this???

New explanations for irregularities in bonus points awarded seem to crop up every week!
I feel EA Sports are really letting themselves down on this particular aspect. Because the information they provide is clearly of the minimal amount. It is not surprising why we are still asking a lot of questions of it!! They should provide a full explanation on the index construction. Every detail of the rules! Every calculation!

Everything is half baked. Not to mention the inconsistency in the manner in which they choose to publish the bonus points… sometimes they are well on time, other times, they keep us waiting for ages! How can they work like this???

    Unacceptable. Frankly Poor.

The algorithm used to calculate the EA Index is an invention - as far as I understand, the creator has the right to keep the exact formula to himself. Speaking to other statisticians, this is pretty standard. If you've created a statistical model, the exact calculations involved are yours to keep and often statisticians like to keep them under wraps.

This week's bonus seems pretty predictable to me - Shawcross is a defender who scored a goal and contributed a string of defensive stats - blocks in particular - while he lost then, those defensive blocks and a goal as a defender was enough to see him gain the maximum. While Graham was on the losing side and, in PPI terms was up against Holt who scored twice, Pilkington who scored as a midfielder and won, and Ward who assisted as a defender and won. We predicted a single bonus point for Graham but I'm not surprised he got nothing - if anything this is consistent with previous outcomes in the Index.

Having said all this - we will push for more clarity and try to put some theories together on the PPI. Sadly, however, I doubt we'll ever have the total transparancy you talk of - the creator of the Index has every right to guard it.

i understand that the software people have a right to maintain their software rights.

what i dont agree with is that we are playing a game whereby we are trying to maximise the points our player selection achieves, if we dont know what the parameters are then we are how are we supposed to assess their bonus point achieveability, eg we know that we will get 3pts for an assist and points scored for a goal because its in the rules, we cannot do the same with the ppi as it stands, and we wouldnt have a clue for example if a holding midfielder has an ability to gain ppi

Playing Sess ahead of young Victor Moses is a little frustrating. Only myself to blame as I gave in to the peer pressure.

The holy one has earned a start for Aston Villa at home next gameweek but as usual he'll do bugger all at the DW. Now I have to bench one of the following:
    Sess(wba)
    Dempsey(qpr)
    Bale(ars)

I might get rid of 1 of the above just so I don't have a seemingly unbenchable front 7 every gameweek.

It is as simple. Shots on target with none off target in a win appear to be weighted quite heavily - if the player is a midfielder, even more so. Completed passes are also a factor - I'm not sure how Silva ranks for this in the match but I imagine he did pretty well. In the absence of other strong bonus candidates, this saw him collect some points.

It is. The main thing affecting negatively to PPI is shots off target. And after goals & assists, shots on target are the main thing affecting positively. Silva had 2 shots on target, none off.

That's why earlier this season VDV got 3 bp with one goal vs. Bale 2 bp with 2 goals.

Shots on target from a midfielder in a win, with no other attacking player ranking highly. Completed passes probably played a part too. You have to remember that performances are relative to others in the match - Silva might have had an average game by his standards but, if no other attacking player stood out, he would be more likely to earn bonus.

Capello won't stay in England. The FA have seen to that, whatever happened to freedom of speech?! Stripping someone of captaincy when they haven't been charged with anything is out of order. Of course the manager wasn't happy. It undermines our "innocent until proven guilty" justice system.

Afternoon all, probably like most of you I've a real dilemma as to who to bench this week...

    PICK ONE:

Bale (ars), Valencia (nor), Sess (wba), Dempsey (qpr), Silva (BLA)
Ba (WOL), Aguero (BLA), RVP (SPURS)

(I'm currently on Bale, but that just seems so wrong)

    Cheers!

Just to make you feel slightly better...I had started Adebayor over Sess the whole week until an hour before deadline when I decided that "Ade hasn't looked like scoring in over a month" and swapped in Sess.

Problem being that a lot of people are bringing in Rooney now and if he scored 2 against Liverpool, how many could he get against Norwich? I am wrestling with this myself. Can't drop Aguero or Ba with their next two fixtures.

Gunna do it. The way i see it. Rooney is a big game player and if he can score 2 against Pool and Chelsea, than im sure he will do well in the weeks to come.

I hope he can keep it up once Cisse gets back in the side, he'll presumably be back on the right rather than doing what he wants, I'm hoping for a big haul this weekend - QPR are so hopeless at the back they've pretty much got no choice but to go all out attack.

The only game he'll have in my team with Cisse will be Bolton(A)

He'll still be threatening on the left, having someone like Cisse upfront can only add to his assist potential. Hoping for big things from the next 3 weeks, well, maybe not from the Everton fixture, they are looking solid.

Like someone says, it could potentially be not a bad BP system - at least it is objective rather than the old totally subjective system.

They just need to twaek the weightings to make them more sensible - which they could do now, don't even need to wait for next season. Could FFS lobby FPL to do this?

E.g. reduce how much goals scored are worth, reduce (or eliminate) negative impact of shots on target - I think a player getting shots on goal, even off target, generally indicate they are influential (obviously shots on target are even better.

Maybe shots off target from outside the area could be penalised (but not as much as present)

Shots in the area off target: no + or - impact

Shots that hit the woodwork: small + impact

Shots off target in the area should be penalised more than shots off target outside the area! Sign of bad finishing, imo.

Ouch. If Adebayor was playing away then possibly I could understand your reasoning but prior to the Spurs game, Newcastle had allowed the most shots off any team in the past 6 matches.

Still, this game does that to you. Just got to take it on the chin, remember it's a game, and look forward to the next game week.

I tend to always prefer my third striker over my fifth midfielder - despite that tactic not working hugely, recently!
