Peter Odemwingie returns to form to see off Wolves in a one-sided midlands derby. West Brom’s strong away form continues, with James Morrison again impressing. Micah Richards is benched as Roberto Mancini opts for rotation, while City struggle for goals on the road once more, with Sergio Aguero and David Silva failing to produce away from the Etihad again:

Micah Richards
The right-back was a victim of rotation yesterday, as Pablo Zabaleta got the nod for City’s trip to Villa Park. Richards’ attacking prowess has seen him acquire 17% Fantasy owners but it appears that Roberto Mancini’s selection policy will continue to frustrate as City juggle domestic and Europa League duties. The Italian looks likely to alternate his full-backs, then, and, with Kolo Toure now heading back from the African Cup of Nations to challenge Joleon Lescott for a place in the heart of defence, Vincent Kompany is the only member of the City back-four seemingly safe from his manager’s tinkering.

Joleon Lescott
The centre-half grabbed the match-winner at Villa to take his recent tally to 2 goals in the last four gameweeks. Lescott’s eye for goal has seen him grab as many as 8 goals in a single season while at Everton and his attacking displays are proving crucial for the league leaders right now. Given that Sergio Aguero has scored 2 in his last eight, while Edin Dzeko has scored 2 in his last twelve, it’s fair to say that City are struggling for attacking returns. Factor in his clean sheet and Lescott has now overtaken Richards in the FPL standings, now sitting on 90 points, after picking up the maximum bonus.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva
The Argentine continues to frustrate his Fantasy owners on the road. While he managed plenty of efforts in the narrow 1-0 win over Villa, Aguero failed to score for the eighth away match in succession. Compare this to 6 goals in his last seven appearances at the Etihad and his inconsistency is glaringly obvious. For an 11.2 priced player, his inability to deliver away from home is infuriating, though with home clashes with Blackburn and Bolton up next, he looks a strong armband option over the next couple of gameweeks. Rumour abound that Mancini is willing to reconsider Carlos Tevez over the remainder of the season and, with Mario Balotelli now available after suspension, the league leaders have plenty of attacking options to consider over the last 13 gameweeks.

David Silva’s early-season form was strong both at home and on the road, but City’s lack of attacking away returns over the last couple of months have also affected their playmaker. Mancini’s side haven’t scored more than once on the road now since Gameweek 11; Silva has picked up just 2 assists in that subsequent seven-game run.

Peter Odemwingie
Finally, he’s beginning to deliver on the performances served up last season. Up until yesterday, the Nigerian had been a huge disappointment, with just 4 goals to his name in the first 24 gameweeks but bagged a hat-trick at Wolves to serve a reminder of his potential. A Fantasy sensation last time round, with 15 goals and 9 assists, Odemwingie has struggled for form and fitness this term and his displays have even been criticised by Roy Hodgson. West Brom have been resultantly toothless of late, with just 5 goals in the last seven gameweeks prior to yesterday’s win at Molineux but, with Sunderland, Chelsea and United up next, their immediate schedule looks tricky.

Baggies Away Form
It’s as if Roy Hodgson’s side just don’t like playing at the Hawthorns. The Baggies have stuttered and struggled, with 4 goals and a single point in their last six home games but, on the road, their form has been markedly different. West Brom have now won four and drawn two of their last seven away games, suggesting that, against conventional Fantasy thinking, their assets may be best utilised on the road. With trips to United, Everton, City and Liverpool in their next five away, that theory will be tested severely, though.

Liam Ridgewell and Keith Andrews
The new January acquisitions were handed their debuts for the Baggies yesterday. Ridgewell was fielded at left-back by Hodgson, with Nicky Shorey dropping out of the first-team, as Gareth McAuley kept his place at centre-half alongside Jonas Olsson. Andrews, on as a half-time sub for Paul Scharner, caught the eye with a devastating display. The former Blackburn man grabbed a goal and assist in the 5-1 rout and, with Hodgson opting for a five-man midfield, could force his way into his manager’s first-team plans over the next few gameweeks.

James Morrison
The Scot’s recent strong form continued at Wolves yesterday. A couple of assists means he has now produced attacking returns in three of his last four gameweeks- ironically, the only blank was in Gameweek 24, when he was selected for the Scout Picks. A goal and 4 assists since the start of Gameweek 22 is indicative of his form and, priced at 5.3, with a 0.6% ownership, has proven to be a decent mid-price differential over the last few matches.

Signing off with this until next week.

Minutes played by City defenders this season.

    Lescott..........1876
    Kompany.......1873
    Richards........1615
    Clichy............1497
    Zabaleta.........718
    Kolarov...........631
    Savic.............460
    Toure.............416

Most 60+ minute appearances: Lescott (21/25), Kompany (21/25), Richards (18/25)

Guess I'll have to stick with Richards for now and risk it, all in all I can't be sure if switching will work out any better.

Kompany has only missed 1 game for other reasons than suspension, he's still the best premium defensive option in the game imo. Not saying that he can't be suspended again, but it's hard to make that a factor.

Agree that he's most reliable to start of all the City defenders, went for Richards ultimately because I felt Kompany as the last defender could lose as many points to cards and suspensions as Richards might by not playing, plus Richards has very credible attacking potential. Admittedly this was influenced by having Komp for his sending off. We'll see how it goes. If Mancini rests Richards again in the next two games, I'll have to conclude he's even riskier than I thought and drop him.

Richards sounds so good on paper, but has probably been one of my worst transfers of the season

Got him GW10, and have got 1 goal, 2 assists and only 3 CS since then. Its not bad, but its way to little for the money.

Trouble is, he just seems like too good a player to sell! So annoying though - he's only got CS points for three of City's last seven shut outs.....

He is one of those players. Right there we can see his attacking threat is real, but for whatever reason he's not there often enough when City get their CS. And I don't think there's much suggestion he's at fault for losing City CS, quite the opposite if anything.

Next 2/3 games will be crucial.

Anyone see the ACON final? Two great moments:

    - the keepers shaking hands when one scored against the other in the shoot out
    - the Zambia coach carrying an injured player to the team celebrations on the other side of the pitch.

A very refreshing change from the nonsense at the weekend, and well done Zambia, great stuff....

Really doubt that. Where he's playing now is his best position, where he can get on the ball alot and have the freedom to run the game in the attacking third. If anything, it will be one of Bendtner/Campbell infront of Sess most games. No way is O'neil going to drop McClean to then put Sess in a position that isn't his best. He's their best player by a mile and should be where he plays right now.

Adebayor & Sess (currently have) vs. Aguero & McLean for the next few weeks?

My dilemma is that I have a pretty solid front 8 and have to keep benching one of them. For example, this week I benched Adebayor over Sess! 🙁 tragic

          Valencia, Dempsey, Silva, Sess, Bale
          RVP, Adebayor, Ba

With Tottenham's tougher fixtures....surely Aguero (and Mclean) is the pair to go with so that I can bench McLean?

Getting rid of Ba when he's about to play 2 home games and get in Rooney who's facing 2 away games? I don't think so.
Also, why get Caulker when Kelly(Ful) is cheaper and has easier fixtures over the next 4 games?
Silva for Toure is worth it if Toure is going to play an more attacking role but with Tevez and Ballotelli on the way back that mightn't be the case

He won't go back to South America, he's one of the best players in the world. Clubs will be queuing up to sign him, probably from the PL as well. Worst comes to worst he can just come back to Ajax, unfortunately I can't see that happening!

of course not, but there is no reason why Man City or Chelsea wouldn't come in for him. It'll be academic anyway, Liverpool won't sell him. It'll all blow over soon anyway

It always amuses me with this fpl craic how week on week someone else is essential/differential or better still an essential differential.
Surely the more sensible tactic is a solid team based on fixtures?

I know it's hard to keep justifying it as just another anomaly, but i do think we shouldn't read much into that result. Going to White hart Lane, playing 4-4-2 against the most in form midfield in England right now, with Perch and Guthrie in the opposing teams central midfield was always going to be suicidal.

Good news is that Cabaye and Tiote are more or less back now, and Newcastle's fixtures are still good. At that price, i wouldnt want to sell their defenders.

Why remove Santon? It isn't as if they're failing at home. They're better than most defences at the moment, at home.

            Keeping him anyway for now.

At the minute I might be needing Santon for a couple of away games given the uncertainty over Richards (and Evans potentially with Jones and Smalling). And it's hard to maintain the home and away separation in goals conceded when the away performances have been so catastrophic...

Yeah Krul is a penalty saving beast.

I can see what you mean by no better options in defence - cheap CS are so appalling right now. Before this weekend's round of fixtures I speculated it might be the death knell for the cheapie home CS strategy - and duly Fulham and Swansea let me down again.

I may well have to upgrade Kelly or Caulker to someone just below 6 to get some bloody CS points.

We've been really unlucky with injuries, suspensions, etc this year. We could cope with losing one guy in each position, but losing both tiote and cabeye at the same time is a bit much. As was Saylor and Colo for Norwich (and part of chelsea), and ba and cisse for fulham.Saying that, only man u, city, and spurs could really deal with that.

Yep. Arsenal sure as hell have flopped every time their fullbacks got injured this season (ie. most of it).

Squad depth really does tell and while I think the Toon and Arsenal first XIs are a match for anyone in the league, they will never play.

Looking at the strength in depth that spurs have (never mind man utd and city) compared with us makes me want to cry!! But saying that, i was reasonably happy with our squad at the start of the season, because i didn't have my sites above 7th spot. Its a whole different ball game trying to challenge for 4th, and the likes of Perch, Williamson, Obertan and Ameobi just won't cut it!

Yep, you guys are punching way way way above everyone's expectations, most of all Toon fans lol! All four won't cut it. Find Leon Best distinctly average to be honest. As for Lovenkrands, Nile Ranger (awesome name) and Sammy Ameobi... what's the plan with them?

Lovenkrands is out of contract at the end of the season. He won't be missed. We are trying desperately to get rid of nile ranger, but someone stupidly gave him a 5 year contract a while back! Sammy Ameobi has a fair bit of potential. He only really seemed to get a run out in really tough games. I'd like to see him getting some minutes against the lesser teams next season. I think he is out for the rest of this season. That makes 4 players out for the season. Saylor, and marveaux (1st team) and ameobi and best. Not ideal when our squad was pretty small to start with!!

can anyone remember back to this time last year, and what happened with the latter stages of the FA cup interfering with premier league fixtures?

i ask because as i see it, up to 7 out of 10 matches in GW 29 could be cancelled if the weekend's FA cup fixtures go to plan. could the premier league games just be nudged into mid-week and played in the same GW, or will they need to give fans more notice to make travel plans etc?

it could be an absolute nightmare if the only teams playing are WOL, MUN, WIG, WBA, FUL, SWA....
