[sbu_large_image] Champions League

What was once thirty-two teams has now, finally, been whittled down to eight remaining candidates for the Champions League crown. With seven different nations represented in the Quarter Finals stage, there’s plenty variety for our European Fantasy managers to choose from. Here’s how this week’s fixtures panned out…

Bayern Back With A Bang

A goal down from the first leg after a below-par performance in Switzerland, the Bundesliga giants crushed FC Basel to reach the Quarter Finals in emphatic style. For the second time in just under a week, Jupp Heynckes’ side scored seven goals in a home fixture, not just blowing off the cobwebs off recent poor form but sweeping them away in a hurricane of German efficiency.

Arjen Robben was arguably the strongest performer on the night. Constantly probing, threatening and tormenting his Swiss counterparts on the Munich right flank, the Dutch winger was often seen troubling not one, not two but three opponents, as Basel tried fruitlessly to keep him at bay. As previously predicted, Robben ran amok, picking up 16 UCL points from 2 goals and an assist.

Munich’s ‘second best player’ on the night, Mario Gomez, did fairly well for himself, too, grabbing four goals in the 7-0 rout. This was the German striker‘s second hat-trick within a week and eleventh in the last seventeen months, with an overall goalscoring record (72 goals in his last 72 games) on a par with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Elsewhere, Franck Ribery bagged himself three assists, Thomas Mueller a goal and, of course, a whole array of clean sheets for the Munich backline, with birthday boy Holger Badstuber also grabbing an assist for one of the four Gomez goals. Those European Fantasy managers backing Toni Kroos, a sublime young German talent, are undoubtedly left feeling hard done by, with just 4 points returned on the night.

Following on from their opponents weekend hammering of Hoffenheim, FC Basel coach Mike Vogel will no doubt be haunted by his retaliatory response to press questioning by saying…

“I have absolutely no fear that Bayern will score seven goals against us.”

Chelsea Pensioners Battle Through

Following on from their 1-3 defeat at the Stadio San Paolo three weeks ago, Chelsea knew they had an uphill task ahead of them last night.

120 minutes of action under caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo later and the boys in blue have come out swinging and landed a knock-out punch, ensuring England have a representative in the final eight for the sixteenth season in succession.

The visitors were actually the side to start the strongest, as they tested and probed the Chelsea backline, but a breakthrough goal from Didier Drogba, following a sublime cross from Ramires, got the ball rolling on a rip-roaring fixture down Stamford Bridge way. The “old guard”, as so charmingly referred to of late, continued to step up, as John Terry’s header from a Frank Lampard corner put the home side 2-0 up and leading the tie on away goals.

A twenty-yarder from Gokhan Inler swung the tie back in the visitors’ favour but Chelsea –showing a spirit mainly lacking under Andre Villas-Boas – were not to be denied. Lampard’s spot-kick took the tie to extra time before Drogba teed up Branislav Ivanovic to fire home the decisive goal with just five minutes of the game remaining.

Last Minute Drama at the San Siro

Despite winning 2-1 at home to Marseille on Tuesday night, Inter all but waved goodbye to the Champions League for at least another 16 months. The away goal in a 2-2 aggregate scoreline keeps the French side in Europe’s top competition and with Claudio Ranieri’s side currently eight points off the chase for third place in Serie A, their hopes of qualifying for next season’s competition look somewhat forlorn.

With just quarter of an hour left to salvage the 1-0 first leg reverse, Diego Milito was in the right place at the right time to prod home from inside the six yard box as Marseille failed to deal with an Inter corner. The game looked destined for extra-time but an injury time flourish sent the hosts spinning out.

A direct ball up the field from L’OM goalkeeper Steven Mandanda eluded Lucio and allowed substitute Brandao the time and space required to secure Didier Deschamps’ men a place in the final eight of the competition. The drama didn’t end there, however, as the Marseille stopper then felled Giampaolo Pazzini in the box, earning himself a red card and suspension for the first leg of the next round. The Italian duly converted from the spot to earn Inter a somewhat hollow victory; Marseille join the likes of FC APOEL in the cheaper categories for those European Fantasy managers looking to pick up a bargain.

Madrid Power On Through

Jose Mourinho’s other team, the one he is actually currently in charge of, also happened to win their second leg by a 4-1 home scoreline. The result saw Real Madrid secure a second spot for Spanish sides, the only country with more than one representative, in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League.

Other than Zoran Tosic spoiling plenty of clean sheets for European Fantasy managers, there was plenty of profit on offer from secure horses like Cristiano Ronaldo, with the former United man bagging a brace. Those with a more ambitious and risky streak saw our gamble Kaka pick up an assist, while strikers Gonzalo Higuain (goal) and Karim Benzema (goal and assist) both returned the points in a stroll at the Bernabeu.

Already well on their way to a first La Liga title under their Portuguese maestro, perhaps even Barcelona will be keen to avoid Mourinho’s men in tomorrow’s Quarter Final draw.

I've got to choose 3 from Skrtel, Simpson, Kelly (Fulham), Siggy and McClean to start this week. I'm currently set on

    1. Skrtel (good chance of both defensive and attacking returns)
    2. Siggy (difficult fixture but he's got the potential to chip in with something)
    3. Kelly (based on statistics and form, he's more likely to get a clean sheet than Simpson

    4. Simpson 1st sub
    5. McClean 2nd sub

I really don't rate McClean or Sunderland to have much attacking threat at the moment and I think it's more likely that Simpson will get a clean sheet than McClean getting more than 2 points.

What do you guys think? Am I right or would you rank them differently?

I wouldn't worry about playing players who play eachother. You're just covering your bets. Makes less sense to pick someone who is less likely to score points.

Do you agree with my ranking? Lindy (Mignolet) in net.

A fit Raylor? Yes. Simpson? Maybe.... have to be pretty sure a Def will outscore a winger.

Tempted to get Ben Arfa in with my freebie and see what happens (I have Raylor as well so could play both and at least get the benefit of a sub). Pardew has been talking him up a lot yesterday.

Sorry for repost from last post.

Good day everyone. I understand the hype over bringing Drogba in over the next few weeks. (i am even contemplating it myself). However, CHE are chasing CL and FA Cup. Given that they SHOULD beat Leicester quarter finals, they will play at least 4 additional matches between now and seasons end. Is there not any fear he will or other CHE players (Mata, Cahill) be rotated?

So what are your current thoughts on Pogrebnyak?

At a first glance he looks a no brainer to own: 12.5 ppg at home, exceptional current value with his price at 6.4. But; before his game vs Villa I'd noticed that he's scored 5 goals from 5 shots.

Superb 100% success rate, but for those who, like me, look at those sorts of stats, know that just woudn't continue. And it didn'tm as he failed to find the back of the net vs Villa.

My thoughts are that whilst he's had an amazing start, I don't think it will continue at anywhere near that rate and unless Fulham provide more chances for him, he'll calm down to a more expected goals to shots ratio, which I think is 1 in 10 (could be wrong here).

I got in early on the bandwaggon and enjoyed the points from his hatrick and I think he will get as good a return as most other strikers below the 9mill.

I think he's a better option than Dempsey (if you want Fulham coverage) it's just that we can only have 3 strikers so with Rooney and RVP in most teams, it may be too much of a risk. You'd need him to perform in away games to make him worth having over a Suarez/Adebayor/Ba etc. Dempsey's away performances are getting on my nerves a little bit, especially as I have Senderos as well.

I brought him in after the deadline on the weekend he scored the hatrick (before he had scored it) at 6million.

I don't think there is any chance of him keeping up the current scoring rate.

That said, I've liked what I have seen and think he should score regulary for the rest of the season, could definitely get a few doubles in the home games, SWA, NOR, WIG.

have not decided on Clint. Essentially it's whether I get Ade or Odem or Drogba. I may well sell him for Theo though.

Think it was him that Portsmouth Bubblejet basically slated at the point he signed. I know this isn't particularly scientific but PB is usually pretty good with his player reviews so it's coloured my view of Pog a bit, concerned he's a flash in the pan and I'm staying clear personally.

I agree with this. As a Pogrebnyak owner...I was away 2 wks ago, got back 2 hrs before price changes on Mon and felt I had to jump on until Ade rather than lose cash on Ba. Kind of Ironic, as Ade was about the only potential transfer that required me to be prudent with cash.

Well, the -8 sort of worked, no thanks to Pog. I take some solace in Ba, Holt and Odemwinge (other contenders) also scoring badly. Ba's price only dropping by .2 is frustrating - was hoping for more from the masses.

Scoring rate is not sustainable, of course, but his form is still solid at that price and he only needs to do ok for 3/4 more weeks at most. Budget Mids are currently outperforming strikers, so either Ode / Ade come into some killer form, who else is there?

So, if Chelsea goes to semifinal of FA cup at weekend and be lucky at draw for CL at friday and also goes to semifinal there, GW34 on April 15th Chelsea-Newcastle will definitly be removed and we will have Double GW in36 or 37 GW...

Surely not Ba? Newcastle have drawn 2 (home to Wolves and Sunderland) and lost 1 of their last 3. Doesnt matter that they are home to Norwich imo. Play the form rather than the fixture. Plus, United away to Wolves is probably a better fixture than Newcastle home to Norwich!

Does this improve Morrison's prospects or weaken them? I may have to rethink my transfer plans.

help would be very much appreciated as i think i can finally take lead in my ML with some good decisions this week.

                        so my team is:

                        Krul
                        Enrique - McCauley - Caulker
                        Walcott - Bale - Dempsey - Siggy
                        Ba - RVP - Rooney

Vorm --- McClean - Kelly (ful) - Shotton

                        1.6 in the bank

think shotton >>> j.evans then maybe j.evans play and caulker on the bench?

but any ideas are VERY welcome! 😀

anyone thinking of getting Martin Kelly in? - the pool have great fixtures and he seems to find himself right in front of goal more often than not (missing sitters). in other words (look away now) 'he's due a goal'

Only played as GJ was injured, not nailed on enough IMO. If he was he's a bargain at 5.2

So I have Kelly (Fulham), Cahill and Raylor in my defence. What chances of one of them starting this game week, or do I need to get in the transfer market quick sharp?

                        Any thoughts welcome....

Not much, thinking Jevens but only if all three are unlikely not to play. What about Kelly, is he still first choice. Don't hold out much hope for Cahill or Raylor playing for a while now...

For people considering Chelsea after their 4-1 win, here's a guess at the formations they played before and after subs:

                        ......................Drogba
                        ......Mata.......Lampard......Sturridge
                        ................Essien Ramires
                        Cole.........Luiz......Terry........Ivanovic

                        ......................Drogba
                        ...Malouda.......Lampard......Torres
                        ................Essien Ramires
                        Cole.........Luiz......Ivanovic.....Bosingwa

                        Points of note...
Drogba stayed on at CF and doesn't seem threatened (as if any striker is) by Torres, who went RW (and did a decent job IMO). Di Matteo seems to show some faith with Lampard playing him both in the league match and this match. Also seems like his first team involves both Mata and Lampard (Mata came off very late). It was hard to pin down exactly where Lampard and Ramires were playing, both got forward a lot and Ramires seemed to be everywhere.

All in all, I would say prospects have improved for Lampard and Drogba - but age is no friend.

Yeah no place for Cahill. Terry came off with something late on, though I doubt that will let him back in.

                            He's got them down as

                            ………………….Drogba
                            ……Ramires……Mata……Sturridge
                            …………….Lampard Essien
                            Cole………Luiz……Terry……..Ivanovic

                            Interesting...
