A breathless day. City’s late salvo may have saved face but the 3-3 Etihad draw with Sunderland loosens their grip further, priming United to take advantage in Monday night’s Ewood encounter.

Fantasy managers will have a keen interest. For the second Gameweek running, Wayne Rooney will take to the field sporting the captaincy for some, needing just a single goal to outscore Robin Van Persie. Just like City’s faltering title aspirations, the Fantasy manager’s unshakable faith in the Arsenal skipper is beginning to waver.

Van Persie came away from a bitterly disappointing 2-1 defeat to relegation threatened QPR with just an assist. The Dutchman has now gone three league matches without a goal for the first time this season. By his standards, that’s a drought.

Clint Dempsey’s goal and assist return, with the woodwork denying him a further haul, acts as an immediate comparison from today’s action. Should Rooney fetch significant returns on Monday night, we could see a significant shift in favour away from Van Persie for the Gameweek 32 captaincy.

The scene was already set for such a move. Arsenal take on City at the Emirates – Rooney will face QPR at Old Trafford. On paper, that strongly favours the United man, although given today’s results, it’s clear that the formbook can almost be shredded at this stage of the season.

The Rooney vs Van Persie battle rumbles on against a backdrop of unpredictable results; it will likely run until Gameweek 38, breaking only for the double fixtures in Gameweek 36.

A ready-made differential with some potential for those chasing a mini-league deficit, we’ve yet to see Rooney capitalise on Van Persie’s recent slips. In his last four starts, Rooney has outscored Van Persie by a total of just four points – Gameweek 28 saw Rooney fetch 13 points to the Arsenal man’s 8 – the biggest swing since the captaincy battle kicked in. Monday night is a great opportunity for a bigger gap to open; for those who transferred their allegiances early to reap the rewards for such a risk.

After Monday’s modest showing against Fulham, another tepid display from Rooney will make things interesting going into next weekend. While Rooney will likely be favoured based on fixtures, it’s hard to imagine that Van Persie’s blip will be extended to four matches. Our confidence may have slipped further after today, but the call to take the armband from the imperious Dutchman is still one that demands nerves of steel.

Those protecting a lead would seem more likely to cling to the comfort that Van Persie brings – those chasing will surely look to Rooney to help them take advantage. It’s a delicious little scenario that keeps the Fantasy game interesting, even if City seem intent on making the Premier League title race a formality.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just in. Tell me, please tell me that this week we're not going to be subjected to ANOTHER Torres bandwagon; another false dawn; another single swallow.

    PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THIS...

Fernando Torres cannot (usually) score in a barrel load of fannies!!

Will Mancini even be there next season?

Wouldn't be surprised to see City sell Tevez & Dzeko and buy a £30M striker or two.

Villa squad is so young. So many great youngsters but missing Bent and now Petrov is going to end badly.

low on experience, low on goals, low on quality. with their tough run in, i think they're very likely to go down. hate to say it. 🙁

I wouldn't say 'very likely' tbh, teams somehow picking up points in games that they shouldn't do on paper, just need Villa to do it in the run they have. Bolton and Sunderland in GW35 at home are key.

We've been unable to rely on our experienced players, and have had no choice but to push through the youngsters. They'd win the Championship, but it would be terrible for Villa if they went down, we have enough rebuilding to do as it is.

I'm playing Jelavic so you are safe there. I'd also bench Verm.

          to the FPL Open spreadsheet

Torres looking like a decent option for DGW if he can nail down a spot.

Not sure he's worth losing RvP or Rooney for yet though.

This MLS fantasy is easy. Just captain Henry every week.

Henry captain last week: 2 goals 1 assist
Henry captain this week: 2 goals 1 assist with 20 minutes left.

Does anyone know much about acute leukemia regarding the treatment and recovery?

From what I hear he will need chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. If all goes well will he be able to lead a normal life?

By his own admission his football career is over. Is there no way people can recover from leukemia and continue playing sports?

Just thinking about Lance Armstrong and how he battle cancer so many times and continued competing.

think they said that retirement announcement was premature. people do recover from some types of leukemia.

i wouldn't cite lance armstrong as a good example

I know he is a one off case but it's strenuous exercise and competition after serious health issues which you would normally assume would have to be given up.

Just wondered what was possible in terms of recovery and returning to competitive sport.

yeah in all likelihood, his career is over, he has much much greater things to worry about i suppose. good luck to him.

I can only tell you what I've googled in wake of the news about Petrov. 5+ years survival rates vary quite alot depending on age of the patient and stage of detection, anything from 15-70%. And theres always a chance of relapse beyond that.

In terms of playing sport, in theory its not impossible. But given his relative old age as a footballer, its unlikely given the long treatment/recovery time for chemo.

In the bigger scheme of things, his health is of course most important. It made me sad when it dawned on me that we probably won't see him on a pitch again, but realised quickly how irrelevant that is when I saw him with his kids today.

Thanks for that. Sad when you read the statistics like that. When you take his age and the stage of his career into consideration it doesn't look likely at all.

Yeah exactly. Such a young family and him being around for years to come is all that matters. You could see today though how much it hurt knowing he won't be out on the pitch anymore. Such a shame for the guy. Used to watch him at Celtic Park and he was always such a talented player who gave his all.

Its pretty sobering reading. On the bright side, from what I've read, adult patients of acute leukemia usually only get detected at 50+ years, so it seems its been detected early?

He's obviously in prime physical condition, and he'll have access to the best healthcare possible. He'll have a better chance than the vast majority of similar sufferers. We can only keep our fingers crossed for him.
